- First off, for folks now familiar with your background, can you tell us a bit about yourself?- You made the leap from working for a firm to founding your own talent and recruiting company. Can you tell us about that decisions and experience?- Before we dive into specific topics, what are some of the biggest workforce trends you are seeing in cyber currently? I have seen you talk about the pendulum shift from workers to employers on aspects like remote roles, and so on. What is the current dynamic across the cyber landscape broadly at the moment?- The cyber workforce is often discussed painfully, with talks of struggles to attract and retain technical talent, but I feel like it isn't just a headcount problem. We also often see absolutely awful PD's and processes that impact organizations hiring abilities. What are your thoughts here?- You're often seeking out some of the best talent for leading organizations. What sort of experiences, qualities and characteristics do you find yourself looking for in candidates that make them stand out from the broader workforce?- Conversely, what are some things you see organizations doing the best that really set them apart from others when it comes to building amazing security teams?- What can folks be doing to try and best position themselves for their dream role? What are key things to keep in mind and emphasize from an expertise, personal branding, resume and other factors perspectives?

On this week's show, I'm excited to be joined for the third time by DSP (David Spencer-Percival!).The founder of Life Science People, a global life science people provider based in the UK with offices in the US and soon to be opening in Europe. They are just under three years old with 100 staff. The first time David was on the show, they were on their way to a hundred people - they were flying. The second time, earlier this year, David talked about how they'd lost a lot of money in the downturn at the end of last year - £800,000 in three months. The market just wasn't great. Now, he's back on the show to share that they've just secured £4 million in investment funding by Silchester Partners. This discreet, private hedge fund now owns 20% of his business and the £4 million is going to fuel their growth for the next 10 years to help them get to 1000 people. In this 30 minute episode, we cover:
Starting a cybersecurity recruitment business during a tech market downturn can be exceptionally challenging for several reasons: reduced demand, intense competition, financial constraints, and talent availability. Despite these challenges, it's not impossible to succeed in launching a cybersecurity recruitment business during a downturn, as proven by my special guest, Stuart Mitchell. Stu founded Hampton North in 2022 with the goal of building the most trusted cybersecurity search firm in the united states. Despite the downturn in the tech market, they're on pace to bill $1.5-2M in their first year. In this episode, Stu shared his insights into key topics that help him succeed: finding the right people to surround you, attracting and retaining the best people, and how to build a personal brand, and becoming a recognized industry leader. With over a decade of experience, Stu has been a successful billing manager, having personally billed over a million dollars while building a multi-million dollar team who achieved an EBITA of $1m. He's placed some of the most well-known cyber security executives into Financial Services Companies, Retail Brands, and Tech Giants alike. He has built cyber security programs from 0-20+ on multiple occasions, including one of these scale-ups in less than 8 weeks. Episode Outline and Highlights [03:30] How Stu got into recruiting leading to him starting his recruitment firm. [11:30] From good to great - finding the right people to surround you. [16:18] How Stu began to build his brand by sharing a case study on LinkedIn. [20:48] Stu shared how he launched Hampton North and what makes them thrive despite the downturn in the tech industry. [29:52] Attracting, hiring, and retaining the best people as a startup. [39:21] Breakdown of how Stu became a recognized industry leader. [50:00] The importance of consistency in creating value-adding content - hear Stuart's content strategies. [1:03:30] Stu shares what is next for Hampton North. Overcoming a Tech Market Downturn - Launching Hampton North and Billing 7 Digits on Their First Year A remarkable achievement that I wanted to discuss with Stu is how he launched his cybersecurity recruitment business, Hampton North in 2022. What makes it amazing is that despite the downturn in the tech market, they are on pace to bill $2M in their first year! I am excited to share in this episode Stu's insights on the things that contributed to this success. We zoomed in on three key factors: The importance of hard work. Developing key account relationships. The quality of people that you hire. The third topic resonated well with me as I feel the impact of having the right team members to support my business. For many recruitment business owners, especially those who are just starting, hiring someone can be like a roll of the dice. Stu shared how he was able to get the top talents and retain them. It can probably be summarized with a question that serves as his guiding principle when hiring: “Who are the best people that I know, and why aren't they already working here?” Becoming a Recognized Industry Leader and Consistent in Sharing Relevant Content Stu also did a phenomenal job in establishing a reputation in the cybersecurity space as a recognized thought and industry leader. With more than 40,000 LinkedIn followers, he is consistent in posting industry-relevant content. I also enjoy the posts that he shares, so I wanted to get his thought process on how he is consistently coming up with ideas. We discussed the following subjects: The impact of sharing case studies. Creating a brand of familiarity less the intention of wanting to be liked. Avoiding “forced content” by sharing free-flowing ideas. Strategies in creating 2-3 posts a day consistently. Stu described his thought process this way, “I think I kind of see this as t kind of the writer's strike in Hollywood, right? The more you force it and try and make things rigid and structured like it's really hard to force great ideas. Great ideas are free-flowing.” Surrounding Yourself with the Right People Before becoming a recruitment business owner, Stu has always been a consistently successful billing manager. He billed over a million dollars while building a multi-million dollar team that achieved an EBITA of $1m. He revealed what can turn a good recruiter into a great recruiter: “I think it goes back, there's a saying of yours, your collective sum of the five closest people around you.” Stu mentioned great recruiters where he learned to shift his perspectives in terms of what is possible. Surrounding yourself with the right people can shift your whole belief system to drive you to reach your potential. I'm super excited to be joined by Alexander Antoniou, the founder of AL Solutions, a Life Sciences specialist recruiter headquartered in London, just over five years old, with 25 staff. Now, the reason I wanted to interview Alexander is because he's not only grown AL Solutions, but he's also built a portfolio of five other businesses that he does the back office support for. They share infrastructure, and he's basically set other people up.Alexander is only 25 years old!He got into recruitment at 18. Having said to his parents, who wanted him to become a lawyer, that he was going to have a gap year and just work in sales to save some money for university. He then became the top performer at a local life science recruitment firm, and two and a half years later, at the age of 20 years old, he went out and set up AL Solutions, which stands for Antoniou Life Science.Alexander is an incredible guy with incredible energy. He's so young and has achieved so much.He looks at the business with energy, passion, and a level of simplicity. I believe we could all learn from the way he runs his business. You're going to enjoy this episode if you are a recruiter looking to start your own business in the future or if you're looking to grow and you want to think a bit clearly and a little bit more simply about the whole solution. __________________________________________HoxoAre you spending hours on LinkedIn and cold outreach and want more business coming to you over your competition? Well, if you're the founder or leader of a recruitment agency, here's what we can do for you at Hoxo. We'll give you the training, support, and resources to help you stand out from the competition and reach over 25,000 relevant people and drive daily inbound leads on Linkedin in 6 weeks - and if you don't perform, you don't pay. Now, how can we make such a bold, results-driven promise like this? 2 reasons:1. Whilst I've been building the RAG podcast, we've actually done what we say will do for our clients in less than two years. We actually built a business generating from zero to over 1 million views per month on LinkedIn leading to multimillion pound revenues with a sales team of me plus two people without making a single outbound call.2. Second is our track record. Not only have we done it ourselves, but we've helped over 350 agencies and over 4,700 consultants do it as well, all in the last three years. For Stuart, this meant he could spend more time with his daughter. He now is on a mission to create the best cybersecurity recruiting team in the industry, with the support of Recruit Hub, The world's most powerful recruitment start-up solution. His only regret once joining Recruit Hub? On this week's show, I was joined by Stuart Mitchell, the founder of Hampton North, a specialist cybersecurity search firm, headquartered in the US with 3 staff. He's based in Connecticut, just between Boston and New York.He launched the business in September 2022, so we're only nine months into his journey.I wanted to interview Stuart because he's built an incredible personal brand. I have never worked with Stuart, so I can't take any credit, but the way he works is exactly how I believe the modern recruiter should. It's what I teach thousands of people to do all over the world. He started investing in his personal brand in 2017 and by 2019 he was at Stott & May on the west coast of America. He was bringing in business all over the world for his teammates and he started to realise the power of personal branding and inbound on LinkedIn. He then teamed up with RecruitHub and launched his own agency. After nine months, he has billed over $ 1 million which is incredible! He's now at three people and he wants to build a company that is fit for the modern era - a remote first business. Heywood Banks - Musician - Poet - Comedian - Cult Icon - just as it says on his web site. A performing musician (under his birth name Stuart Mitchell) since the 70's. A comedian since the 80's and a cult icon since he added a toaster to his act, Heywood has been making us laugh with good, clean comedy songs for a long time.A staple on the syndicated Bob & Tom radio show and a regular on morning shows (especially in the Metro Detroit area), it is my pleasure to welcome Heywood to the Grove Studios podcast studio to talk about his newest collection of songs "New Holiday Standards." If you are worried about hearing the same Christmas songs you've heard thousands of times, there is nothing to worry about here. These aren't those songs. If you need a good laugh while learning the back story of a comedian who has been covered on American Idol (seriously) and had one of his Christmas songs recorded by a Billboard Magazine topping Christian artist (again, seriously), this is the podcast for you.All songs written by Heywood Banks (https://heywoodbanks.com/)Cash Cash CashScandinavian BabyMy Birthday SuitTurkey BirdRecorded on Dec 10, 2022 at Grove Studios (https://grovestudios.space/)

It's International weekend for the Scotland Women's National Team and John B is joined by commentator Stuart Mitchell, freelance reporter David Smith and returning guest Alan, aka Air Force Wan to preview Friday's World Cup qualifier against Hungary at Hampden. Alan was late on as he was busy washing his hair in anticipation of his competition prize from Supernova Terracewear. We review the opening two qualifiers, which saw a 2-0 away win against Friday's opponents and a resounding 7-1 win against the Faroe Islands on a historic evening at the Girls new home of Hampden Park. Even after just two games and in his first meeting with the girls, the impact of Pedro Martinez Losa hasn't gone unnoticed. With bigger challenges lying in waiting against Ukraine and Spain next month, the importance of victory on Friday is there for all to see, but the quality of the squad suggests there is lots to be positive about this Scotland team. The chat then moves onto review the SWPL 1 and 2 seasons so far, with both leagues proving to be competitive at either end of the table. This is great to see from a neutral point of view to entice more people to womens football in this country and bodes well for the National Team boasting ten domestic based players in the squad. We round off with our predictions for Friday's game, all confident of another win and a clean sheet. Remember, entry is just £10 for adults and £5 children, and FREE for Scotland Supporters Club members, so those who can head along to Hampden on Friday to give the girls that much deserved support. There was a last minute change in host as regular guest special host John B had to call in sick. With none of the regular Podcast team available, Leading The Line Podcast host Chris Marshall kindly stepped into the hosts chair and was joined by regular SWPL commentator Stuart Mitchell. The guys discuss the excitement and anticipation of the Scotland Women's National Team's upcoming World Cup Qualifying matches against Hungary on Friday and Faroe Islands at Hampden on Tuesday. It is Pedro Martinez Losa's first matches since taking over from Shelley Kerr in the summer and he's had to deal with a series of call offs, most notably to Caroline Weir, Kirsty Smith, Lucy Graham and Lisa Evans. The impact of those withdrawals are discussed but there is still a positive feeling that the squad we have is still capable enough of getting six points. With top seeds Spain still to come, these points are vital. As mentioned, the Women's side are now playing their qualifying matches at Hampden, and with tickets at just £10 per adult, £5 for kids and FREE entry for Scotland Supporters Club members, it is hoped that the stature of playing at the National Stadium will bring in better crowds over time. On this week’s episode Why is everybody talking about this now Kris Rides of Tiro Security asks, "When writing a job description in cybersecurity, what's your process?" What in the job description is most important that you want potential candidates to know? And do you have any universal requirements of all candidates? Is this a cyber security disinformation campaign? Stuart Mitchell of Stott and May posted an article from FoxNews on cybersecurity myths, such as I don't have anything worth protecting, I will know when something bad happens. From this list, or possibly another myth, which one do you think is the most damaging? What's Worse?! Public or government interference? There’s got to be a better way to handle this Why are InfoSec professionals still struggling to secure their cloud environments? According to a study by Dimension Research, sponsored by Tripwire, 76 percent admit to having trouble. And only 21 percent they're assessing their overall cloud security posture in real time or near real time. What are the quarter of security professionals doing who are not struggling with securing the cloud? Close your eyes and visualize the perfect engagement Do we need more cybersecurity professionals, or do we just need our general workforce to be more cybersecurity minded? Phil Venables, Board Director - Goldman Sachs Bank, makes a good argument for the latter. Mike has mentioned that when he can make cybersecurity personal, like offering employees a password manager, they start to see the value. Assuming making security personal is the best tactic, what is the ripple effect of that? How do they approach security at your business and how do the efforts of the security team change?
The English Women’s Super League season kicks off this afternoon, and no less than 19 Scottish players are in the league. Sheplays.com.au are running an WSL fantasy football game, and Anyone’s Game was determined to enter a team with as many Scottish players as possible. Given a set budget we had to pick 15 players, but with two of those needing to be goalkeepers and there being no Scottish keepers down south, we could only pick 13 of our 19. It was hard, but listen to how Andrew Southwick and Stuart Mitchell agonised over their decision before picking their team.

On this week's episode Why is everybody talking about this now Why hasn't COVID spurned more disaster recovery and business continuity planning roles? This is what Stuart Mitchell, a recruiter at Stott and May, noticed. Obviously, he's not getting that much demand. The community says it's assumed already into many roles. I have to think BCP and DR are everyone's responsibility. If that's the case, has BCP and DR planning increased during this time? Why or why not? How to become CISO Are two CISOs better than one? Our guest mentioned that her company has split the CISO role. One, the head of tech, reports to the CTO and the other, our guest's role, CISO and head of cyber risk reports to the chief risk officer. How exactly does this work? And what does our guest believe are the pros and cons of splitting the CISO role this way? What's Worse?! This time, no matter what the answer, everyone's going to get in trouble. And now for a little security philosophy Chad Loder, Habitu8, said, "Us InfoSec experts spend too much time asking 'How do we get users to care more about security?' and not enough time asking 'How do we get security to care more about users?'" So I asked my host and guest that question, and more importantly, how has that learning about users improved their security team and overall security? First 90 days of a CISO William Birchett, CIO of Required Team Gear, asked, "When you start, how much do you know of what security posture you've inherited?" We've talked about this before, but I want you to answer in reflection. What were the biggest surprises (positive or negative) between what you knew starting out and what you discovered after 90 days on the job?

GitGuardian offers a threat intelligence solution focused on detecting secrets leaked on public GitHub and an automated secrets detection solution which tightly integrates with your DevOps pipeline. On this week's episode Why is everybody talking about this now? On TechRepublic, Scott Matteson wrote an article about cybersecurity pros working harder than ever during the pandemic. Stuart Mitchell of Stott and May posted the article to LinkedIn and asked if anyone has taken a day off since COVID-19 started, and the general consensus is no. I see a multitude of factors affecting this: increased surface area to protect, compliance is more difficult, I also have to deal with my family, and where the heck is anyone going to go for vacation? I guess I'll just work. Close your eyes and visualize the perfect engagement On LinkedIn, our guest Chris Zell asked others to be more welcoming when you see someone post "aspiring cybersecurity professional." We discussed the approach and what the community could teach us. What's Worse?! Three options of how to talk to the board. There’s got to be a better way to handle this On CSO Online, Mary Pratt has a guide for CISOs on securely laying people off. What are critical technical considerations during layoff time, and as a manager how do you manage security for those people who are still there. Have either of you made a massive security mistake during a layoff that was a great learning experience for you? What Is It and Why Do I Care? We played this game before and like the "What's Worse?!" game, the title pretty much explains it. I have three pitches from three different vendors who are all in the same category of governance, risk and compliance or GRC. I have asked the reps to first, in 25 words or less, just explain their category. That’s the “What Is It?” and then for the “Why Do I Care?” I asked them to explain what differentiates their product or makes them unique also in 25 words or less. It is up to Mike and Chris to pick their favorite of each and explain why. I only reveal the winning contestants and their companies. Ready to play?

On this week’s episode Why is everybody talking about this now? Tip of the hat to Eduardo Ortiz for forwarding this discussion Stuart Mitchell of Stott and May initiated on LinkedIn asking if there should be a "golden bullet" clause in a CISO's contract. He was referring to the CISO of Capital One who had to step down and take on a consulting role after the breach. What are arguments for and against? Ask a CISO Nir Rothenberg, CISO, Rapyd asks, "If you were given control of company IT, what would be the first things you would do?" What's Worse?! Should a CISO be closing sales or securing the company? Hey, you're a CISO, what's your take on this? According to Nominet's Cyber Confidence Report, 71 percent of CISOs say their organization uses the company's security posture as a selling point, even though only 17% of CISOs are confident about their security posture. There are probably many factors that contribute to this disparity. Is it a gap that will ever close, or is this just the nature of security people vs. sales? Bluetooth is a convenient and easy method of sharing data between devices, which, of course, qualifies it as a prime target for exploitation. A trio of researchers has discovered a vulnerability that has the potential of attacking billions of Bluetooth-enabled devices, including phones, laptops, IoT and IIoT technologies. In short, this Key Negotiation of Bluetooth vulnerability, which has been given the acronym KNOB, exploits the pairing encryption protocol within the Bluetooth Classic wireless technology standard, which supports encryption keys with entropy between 1 and 16 bytes/octets. It inserts between the pairing devices forcing both to agree to encryption with 1 byte or 8 bits of entropy, after which it simply brute-forces the encryption keys. More on CISO Series. In this episode, I talk to Stuart Mitchell, one of the directors of Mitchell Potatoes based in Rugby. It is not every day that you get to talk to someone who’s family has been involved with farming and potatoes since the 1880s. We discuss how his ancestors packed up all their belongings, family and animals and moved from Bathgate near Edinburgh and moved to Rugby. Mitchells are probably one of the most significant potato merchants in the UK now. However, the family still pushes along, trying to build better relationships with farmers and sourcing a wider variety of quality chipping potatoes. In this episode we speak to Stuart Mitchell about security in IoT. Stuart Mitchell is the CEO of the IoT start-up mokanix, which is a Tata Communications business incubated in the company's ‘Shape the Future' programme. The inspiration for mokanix came from wondering why mobile operators didn't allow access to some of their core control functionality via easy-to-use APIs. The venture has been established to see what us software developers could make given greater control and security on their mobile data connections. Stuart is an industry veteran and innovator. His career in wireless telecommunications spans over 20 years during which time he has worked in a variety of cutting-edge vendors: both large corporates and start-ups. His experience is as diverse as radio paging and internet security solutions and Stuart worked at the forefront of both VOIP and photo messaging: both of which we take for granted today. Stuart started his career as a broadcast engineer and still has a passion for playing and listening to music and podcasts. He is usually found in airport lounges or speaking to customers while walking his over-enthusiastic dog in the fields near where he lives.
