Every summer, Catalonia hosts a wide range of music festivals, from large international events in Barcelona to smaller coastal concerts. On this week's podcast, we offer a guide to what's on and discuss Sonar+D, a technology festival at the forefront of musical innovation. Head of Catalan News Gerard Escaich Folch visits Primavera Sound to pick up some festival vibes, meet fans from around the world and find out what's so special about Catalonia's biggest summer music event. Reporter and festival fiend Cillian Shields sits down with host Beth Cohen to talk through the headline acts at festivals such as Sónar, Cruïlla and Vida, as well as highlighting the best of this summer's concert program. Plus we take a deep dive into Sónar+D and meet the festival's director as well as some of the researchers, musicians and performers who are exhibiting their work. Albert Barqueduran, otherwise known as albert.data, discusses his new project Synapticon and explains how new neurotechnologies could signify an end to mental privacy. This week, our Catalan phrase is “Fer ballar el cap” - “To make someone's head dance”, which means to get on someone's nerves or annoy them, rather like the English expression “To make someone's head spin”.

Summer festival season is in full swing, and if you're a touring artist or singer feeling the strain on your voice, you're not alone. Whether it's the stress of being on tour, the impact of wildfire smoke, or just the sheer demand of back-to-back performances, your voice might be feeling tired, stressed, or even strained. This video offers a gentle vocal health and rehab program designed specifically to help you manage vocal inflammation and support your voice when it's most needed. In this video, we'll cover: Essential voice coaching tips for singers on tour Strategies to protect your vocal health during stressful times Gentle vocal rehab exercises for tired or strained voices How to manage vocal damage and inflammation The importance of being mindful and not pushing through vocal pain Remember, this is not about expanding your vocal range or increasing power—it's about gently preparing your voice for continued use without causing further strain. Always consult your doctor or ENT if you're experiencing long-term issues, pain, or anything unusual with your voice. Your vocal health is crucial, and pushing through pain can lead to long-term or even permanent damage. Stay safe, be gentle with your voice, and let's keep those performances going strong!

The subject of where to get the best pie in Minnesota is controversial. There's a squabble between those who love Betty's Pies on the north shore and the pies made by The Rustic Inn. The Aroma Pie Shop in Whalen along the Root River Trail has a lot of fans. But perhaps the city of Braham has everyone beat. Back in 1990, former Minnesota Governor Rudy Perpich weighed in when he named the town of Braham, an hour north of St. Paul, the Homemade Pie Capital of Minnesota. Braham Pie Day began that year and it's the latest in our series highlighting summer festivals around the state. This Friday, volunteers will serve somewhere around 700 pies in Freedom Park along Main Street. There are other events planned too — a car show, a quilt show, and a performance by the Pie-Alluia chorus — to name a few. Pie Day entertainment coordinator Marie Grundberg joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer with more on how you can celebrate.

Minnesota Now is continuing our summer festival spotlight series by heading south of the Twin Cities to the town of Montgomery in Le Sueur County. This week marks the 90th anniversary of the town's weeklong festival, Kolacky Days. Montgomery has a strong Czech background and Kolackys are a Czech pastry that is served at the festival. Looking at the list of events, it seems like they have combined five festivals into one. Organizer Maureen Frankek joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer to explain.
