The program, designed for 10th-grade students, aims to develop leadership qualities and foster a sense of community engagement. Participants will explore the impact of teamwork on their peers, schools, and Cherokee County. Applicants must be residents or attend school in Cherokee County, exhibit leadership potential, and demonstrate a commitment to effecting positive change in their community. The program, limited to 20 participants, has been active since 2001, with applications available on the chamber's website under the Programs tab. STORY 2: Blankets and Socks Sought for Seniors This Holiday Season Cherokee Recreation and Parks is asking for donations to give to seniors for the holidays. “Hugs in a Blanket” is collecting unisex slipper socks, warm blankets and caring cards for seniors in nursing homes in Cherokee County. Donations will be accepted through Dec. 13. Drop-off locations are: ♦ The WREC, 7545 Main St. Building 200, Woodstock ♦ Aquatic Center, 1200 Wellstar Way, Canton ♦ The Buzz, 7345 Cumming Highway, Canton For more information, call 770-924-7768. STORY 3: Cherokee Thanksgiving Feeds Over 2,500 Hundreds of families in Cherokee and Pickens counties received Thanksgiving meals Thursday thanks to a local nonprofit. With support from Williamson Brothers BBQ in Canton, Cherokee Thanksgiving served 2,551 meals that were either delivered or picked up at the restaurant, event coordinator Cheryl Mosley said. Every year, Cherokee Thanksgiving prepares meals for people who aren't able to make or buy a Thanksgiving dinner, and for first responders who have to work on the holiday. Each family received a smoked chicken breast, mashed potatoes, green beans, dressing and gravy, a roll and a dessert. The judge ruled that the existing maps, drawn by the Republican majority in 2021, overlooked significant population growth among minorities since 2010. Democrats are likely to gain ground, with the mandate to add one Black majority congressional district, two Georgia Senate districts, and five state House seats. Although Republicans lost seats in the 2022 elections, they retained solid majorities in both chambers, making immediate Democratic control unlikely. The special session for redistricting is expected to be brief. STORY 5: Cherokee County Juvenile Court Receives Over $740,000 in Grant Funding Cherokee County Juvenile Court has been awarded $741,504 in federal grants to establish a Family Treatment Court and enhance the Juvenile Drug Treatment Court. A $363,847 three-year grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention will help establish the Family Treatment Court, focusing on families facing dependency allegations due to parental substance abuse. The court aims to provide evidence-based substance abuse treatment, parenting services, and expedited support for families. Is it their technical knowledge, their accounting abilities, or anything else they might learn in school? While these qualifications  are important, there are other skills which are just as essential to personal and professional success: things like teamwork, negotiating, and planning! Without these abilities, your teen could be the greatest math whiz of all time…but find themselves unable to communicate or collaborate enough to bring their innovations into the world.If kids aren't learning skills like this in school, how can we teach them to be strategic and savvy adults? Mabry Allen and I had a GREAT time talking about teaching!  We covered it all – everything from growing up in “small town Texas” to his experience as a 1st year teacher to the amazing work he’s currently doing with his PALs and Teen Leadership classes at Cy-Springs High School in Cypress, Texas.  Mabry even shares some insight into how he creates a loving and supportive family in his classroom. I love hanging out and chatting with educators that are still so FIRED-UP about teaching kids!!

The Military Spouse Show Our guest, Dan Blanchard, is an two-time Junior Olympian Wrestler, and two-time Junior Olympian Wrestling Coach who grew up as a student-athlete. Dan admits that as a youth he was more of an athlete than a student. Since then, Dan has successfully completed twelve years of college and has earned seven degrees. He teaches Social Studies in Connecticut's largest inner-city high school. In addition, Dan is a consultant for the University of Connecticut's Connecticut Writing Project and had worked with the American Federation of Teachers. Dan has authored of several teen leadership books, Feeling Lucky?, Feeling Good, and has just added another book to the Granddaddy's Secrets series, Feeling Strong! As an educator, author, and speaker Dan feels that it is his duty to positively influence our youth every chance that he gets! He lives with his wife, Jennifer, their five children, and family dog, Daisy and has taken some time out to share his wisdom with our military spouse audience. Join us!
