On to the podcast and on this milestone episode we're joined by Duncan Rock, a graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama who has an active career as an operatic Baritone performing roles at many of the world's leading opera houses. He is a nutritionist working with the likes of Vocal Health Education and The Voice Care Centre and is currently training to be a physiotherapist. KEY TAKEAWAYS Singers have a ritual of avoiding eating chocolate before singing because they think as it naturally contains caffeine, it will dry you out and constrict the muscles around your vocal cords. It's also an acid reflux trigger, creates more phlegm, and it coats the back of the throat giving you a flatter sounding voice. Duncan believes this is just a performative act people give as there is very little evidence that it will actually have any effect. Liquids that are emulsive, whether dairy or not, can create the feeling of thickness and can feel like they leave a sticky residue in your throat. This goes away with time and you can even just wash it off with a glass of water. Sugar has long term effects on our health that happens over time with large consumption. It will not have any short term effects on your voice. We do need to watch our sugar intake, but this is just a long term health risk rather than a vocal one. In Duncan's opinion, trying to manage chronic inflammation and digestive health seems to have the best overall net result for any vocal health issues around mucus and reflux. Chronic inflammation is becoming more of an issue due to stress and the amount of processed food we eat. It's a myth that Duncan has heard at every single level of his career in classical music that if you are fit and exercise then you can't sing opera. Pavarotti was an amazing singer despite his weight, not because of it. BEST MOMENTS ‘Dairy does not create mucus, this is a myth' ‘You're just as likely to experience the same thing with a soy based drink as with dairy' ‘These lists of best food for singers you find online are rarely based on anything substantial' EPISODE RESOURCES Guest Website: www.basttraining.com Social Media: duncanrocknutrition.com Social Media: Instagram: @duncanrock_nutrition Relevant Links & Mentions: Vocal Health Education: vocalhealtlh.co.uk Pubmed: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/ Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep. 60 The Best Nutritional Do's and Don'ts for Singers with Stephanie Moore: https://linktr.ee/basttraining?utm_source ABOUT THE GUEST Duncan is a graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (London) and West Australian Academy of Performing Arts. As a baritone soloist, he has recorded and performed with the London Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Symphony orchestra. Concurrently with his performing career, Duncan works as a Nutritionist and Nutritional Science Writer. He holds a Masters of Science in Nutritional Science and an advanced diploma in nutrition and weight management. His speciality is combining his parallel fields of study and providing nutritional information for performing artists. He is cognisant, from both an academic and personal standpoint, of the heavy demands of a busy performing schedule that often includes the demands of rigorous travel. He has been using his knowledge of diet and nutrition to propel his own career as well as help other performers attain optimal vocal and physical health. Stephanie is a self-employed natural health therapist, clinical nutritionist, author and health coach. With degrees in Performing Arts and nutritional medicine, and a Masters degree in counselling and psychotherapy, plus a long history as a multi-disciplinary physical therapist, she combines all 3 skill sets to help people with many kinds of health issues, both physical and psychological. Stephanie joins Alexa this week to discuss the do's and don'ts for singers. KEY TAKEAWAYS Nutritional needs are not black and white, we all need different things in different amounts. It's not an absolute science that will be 100% effective for everyone. We need to find what works for us. Stephanie believes in fats. There are healing fats that are essential for healthy bodies, but the highly processed fats and oils will often lead to inflammation. It's better to use more natural fats to cook with like butter or good quality olive oil. We'd expect to find around 1000 different microbes in a healthy person, and those microbes feed on fibre. Digestion is a process that takes time, so if you're performing you need to time your meals to optimise your body for when you need to output energy. Apple cider vinegar is a good anti-inflammatory digestive aid. BEST MOMENTS ‘Muscles, aches and pains, it's all affected by nutrition' ‘We think about the brain being a separate bit of the body, but they do connect' ‘There are good fats and there are bad fats' ‘Microbes are the programmers of our health, they feed on fibre' EPISODE RESOURCES BAST Training Guest Website: www.health-in-hand.co.uk Social Media: @healthinhanduk Relevant Links & Mentions: Focus On The Body & The Singer Event: https://www.basttraining.com/event/focus-on-the-body-and-the-singer/ Singing Teacher's Talk Podcast; Episode 32 - The Bio-Psycho-Social Model with Stephen King: https://open.spotify.com/episode/4R13bvilWjwQnd9WOfTiVc?si=960e26bf568a4db1 BAST Membership: https://www.basttraining.com/membership-levels/ The Laryngeal Nerves Blog (for the Vagus Nerve): https://www.basttraining.com/the-laryngeal-nerves/ Why Eating Less & Exercising More Makes You Fat! by Stephanie Moore Contact Stephanie Moore directly: stephanie@healthinhand.co.uk ABOUT THE GUEST Stephanie is a self-employed natural health therapist, clinical nutritionist, author and health coach. This week I get to chat with actress Stephanie Moore who played the sneaky businesswoman Rachel in "A Tail of Love'. We get to talk about her character's conniving traits, working with Brittany Bristow and Chris McNally and an almost car accident that happened on set. Lol This was a fun interview. This week, I reviewed the newest Hallmark Channel film titled "A Tail of Love" starring Brittany Bristow and Chris McNally. I loved this movie. It was a simple plot with simple storylines with a great villain. And sometimes that's all you need (dogs help also lol.) Brittany and Chris had great chemistry, the dogs were cute, grandma had her own romance brewing, but the person who stole the show for me was Rachel, the villain. I loved her. She's my favorite character in the movie. And seems to be the topic of many conversations after the airing of the movie. (The interview with Stephanie Moore will be out on Thursday) That's the end of Spring Into Love Movies, tell me which one was your favorite and why. Kelly Turner's daughter, Olivia Gant was the literal poster child for Colorado Children's hospital. She appeared in dozens of their promotional videos and fundraising materials. Kelly, the mother of 3 children, two with significant health issues was a tireless advocate for her ill children. After the tragic death of seven year old Olivia, Kelly was able to devote more time to her other daughter. Would that devotion and advocacy have similarly tragic results? Episode Summary1. There is a significant relationship between Information Technology, Computer Science, and Cybersecurity. They are intertwined together and yet they are talked about separately. 2. Stephanie is definitely one to watch in this space.3. She is a woman of color in STEM that has leveraged her experience to help other women get into the tech space. 4. She is a proud HBCU alum.5. PLEASE protect yourself online. There is so much information out there that you need to know to protect yourself online. Stephanie Moore BioStephanie is a Senior Lead Engineer at Booz Allen Hamilton in the Washington (DC) Metropolitan Area (WMA). In her 16-year tenure with the firm, she has supported the intelligence community's cybersecurity initiatives. In addition to her client work, she plays a significant role in developing firm programs to support diversity, equity, and inclusion. She is the recipient of industry awards such as Women of Color in STEM and BEYA Modern Day Technology Leader. Stephanie began her STEM journey as early as 7 years old when she demonstrated her curiosity of how the inner workings of things worked by taking them apart and re-engineering them back together. Stephanie grew up in rural Spartanburg County, South Carolina, and was reared in the home by her teen mother and grandmother. In high school, Stephanie took her first programming class. At that time, there were only two females in her class and she was the only person of color. Although she did not see people that looked like her taking computer science classes, she persisted. She journeyed off to Virginia to study Computer Science and Norfolk State University (NSU). After one year, she changed her major to Business with an emphasis in Management Computer Information Systems. The change was a welcomed one. It provided her with the right IT acumen coupled with business. A 1996 graduate, she has held various roles in the system development lifecycle and worked at companies such as Harris Publishing Company, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and IBM. Her client base spans state, local and federal government. Her most proud client engagement was with the Department of Justice's Victim's Compensation Fund, established for relatives of deceased victims and personal injury claimants. This opportunity footed her the means to indirectly support the war on terrorism and would eventually allow her to support client work in the intelligence community.Given her experience growing up without women mentors that look like her, Stephanie has worked diligently to remain active in her STEM advocacy pursuits for girls and young women; especially those that are disadvantaged or otherwise would not have access to STEM education. Her volunteer efforts include Delta Academy, Black Girls Code, BlackGirlsHack, Girls,Inc., FIRST Robotics and NSU's Information Assurance Research Education and Development Institute (IA-REDI). IA-REDI is her latest endeavor in which she was appointed to a board committed to developing corporate partnerships to offer students cybersecurity opportunities and mentorship. Stephanie graduated from The Ohio State University with a Masters in Global Engineering Leadership, emphasis Enterprise Services and Architecture. She made history as the first woman of color to complete her program discipline. LinkedIn: Stephanie (Collins) MooreFacebook: Stephanie Michelle Moore Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! By the early 1930’s, Nell Donnelly had it all. Women everywhere loved Nell Donnelly’s stylish, well-made, and inexpensive dresses. But she didn’t just make great dresses. She made a great work environment, too. Unlike a lot of factory owners at the time, Nell paid well. She offered her employees medical care and a pension plan. She even paid for them to go to school. Nell’s hard work paid off. Fortune Magazine called her possibly the most successful businesswoman in America. She was rich, stylish and classy. But she was also a target. On December 16, 1931, Nell and her chauffeur, George, were kidnapped and driven to a nasty old cabin. The eventual trials of Nell’s kidnappers captured the nation’s attention and involved some of Kansas City’s most prominent citizens. Then Brandi frustrates the hell out of us with the story of Lisa Techel’s murder. When Lisa was discovered shot to death in her Iowa home, everyone knew exactly who’d done it — her neighbor. The man had a bad history with Lisa and her husband Seth. Police were sure they had their guy. But when they went to question him, he wasn’t quite the cold-blooded murderer they expected him to be. Hold on tight, folks. This one has so many twists and turns that it could be a two-hour episode of Dateline. Oh, wait. It is. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: The book, “James A. Reed: Legendary Lawyer; Marplot in the United States Senate,” by Michael Cronan The book, “Called to Courage: Four Women in Missouri History,” by Heather Roberson and Margot McMillen The book, “The Devil’s Tickets: A Vengeful Wife, a Fatal Hand, and a New American Age,” by Gary M. Pomerantz “Strange bedfellows,” KChistory.org “Nell Donnelly Reed, 102, Pioneer In Manufacture of Women’s Attire,” New York Times In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “Before Dawn” Dateline ep. “Techel Trial: Opening Arguments Heard” by Stephanie Moore, whotv.com “Court upholds man’s conviction in slaying of pregnant wife” by Ryan J. Foley, Associated Press
