Is your plan for a career path nothing more than a list of vague aspirations? What if you could create a concrete plan and gain the skills that will help you achieve the career success you're hoping for? Mark Herschberg joins Mary Ann Faremouth in this episode of Career Can Do and shares his insights on how to navigate the new work world. Mark is an instructor at MIT and the author of the book "The Career Toolkit: Essential Skills for Success No One Taught You." They discuss a common mistake in creating a career plan, how to adapt to the changing landscape of AI, and the importance of the ‘firm skills' no one taught you. Mark emphasizes the need for individuals to have a career plan rather than simply hoping for promotions or advancements. "So many people, when they ask themselves about their careers or others ask, they might say, well, I'd like to be a VP, and I'm a director of whatever, or a senior… And that's the plan. Their entire plan is, “I hope one day to get this promotion or get to that level.” That's not a plan." Mark also suggests discussing the plan with one's company and being open to the idea that the plan may lead to transitioning to a different job in the future. Mark discusses the concerns surrounding AI and its potential to automate tasks and replace jobs. He offers a different perspective on how you can stay relevant in your career. “You want to be very strategic… understand how those tasks will evolve, what will go away, what will stay, and what new tasks will come in.” Mark advises people to evaluate which tasks are high-value and hard to automate, as well as low-value tasks that can be automated. By focusing on high-value tasks and understanding the evolving nature of your role, you can adapt and position yourself for long-term career success. Your career development plan shouldn't be created in a vacuum. Mark emphasizes the importance of discussing career plans with employers and managers. He believes employers should work together with employees to find mutually beneficial solutions. As an employer, he shares some of the discussions he's had with employees who want to transition to different roles or even different companies. By fostering open communication and understanding, employers can create a supportive environment that encourages growth and development. Like most of us, I have wished many things were taught to me at school that were not on the curriculum. While so much of what we need to learn can only be taught through experience, many skills that could be taught in school aren't. Please know I am not faulting teachers or even the education system. There is so much to be taught and the laundry list of items could be endless! Yet, what are some of the things that we needed to learn but didn't? My new friend, Mark Herschberg answers that question in his excellent book, The Career Toolkit. Mark developed the material from 20 years of teaching MIT students all the things they'll need to know to succeed but weren't taught even at a top-tier institution. I wish I had this book when I started my career but I'm so glad it is available to my children and I'm also grateful it's available to me even at this stage of life. Mark is a graduate of MIT for both his undergraduate and master's degree, a seasoned startup expert, a successful CTO at various companies, and he has done all kinds of other cool things in his life ranging from fighting cybercrime and becoming an award-winning ballroom dancer. So, listen in as mark and I talk about interview skills, negotiation skills, and of course, the skills that we will need as AI becomes more and more relevant. With the calendar turning to fall, conference season is heating up. People are making arrangements and gearing up to attend academic, industry, and professional conferences. Some “volun-told” by their employers, but others, assuming someone like yourself that would listen to a podcast like this, are attending because they're wanting to level up their career.I love attending conferences. I typically plan to attend at least 3 a year. In the spring, I attended a podcast conference called Podcast Movement and this coming fall I'll be at a personal finance creator conference called FinCon along with 2 other conferences on behalf of my 9 to 5.I attend these conferences to learn from the speakers and stay on the pulse of industry changes but the biggest benefit of them all is networking. In such a condensed, short period of time, I meet a lot of amazing people along with seeing some friends from attending similar conferences in years past. I always come home with many collaborations and follow-up conversations that I know will help me with my business and career. After attending a few conferences, I've learned a few things that have really helped me maximize how to meet other people at conferences. I'm not a seasoned vet though but my friend Mark Herschberg is.If that name sounds familiar, that may be because you've heard Mark on the podcast before.
