Wednesday, February 24, 2021 Hoover Institution In this special episode of Battlegrounds in honor of Black History Month, H.R. McMaster and Lieutenant Colonel Bruce Robinson, US Army (Retired), son of General Roscoe Robinson Jr., the first African American four-star general in the U.S. Army, discuss his father's determination and dedication to serve his country even as he confronted racial inequities in the U.S. military and how all Americans can learn from his leadership and legacy. General Roscoe Robinson, Jr. was the first Black four-star general in the United States Army. A St. Louis native, Robinson entered West Point in 1947 and led forces in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was promoted to four-star general in 1982 and served as U.S. Representative to NATO's Military Committee in Brussels, Belgium. General Robinson received the Bronze Star and the Silver Star for his heroic service and valor and retired from the Army in 1985 after 34 years of military service. He also held a Master's in International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh. In 1993, General Robinson was recognized by West Point as a Distinguished Graduate. He passed away that year and is survived by his children, Bruce and Carol. ABOUT THE SPEAKERS Bruce Robinson is a retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel and the son of General Roscoe Robinson Jr. After retirement from the United States Army in 2006, Lieutenant Colonel Robinson worked as a Homeland Security consultant for a software company in California. He holds a B.S. in General Engineering from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and an M.S. in Telecommunications Management from the University of Colorado at Boulder. H. R. McMaster is the Fouad and Michelle Ajami Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. He is also the Bernard and Susan Liautaud Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute and lecturer at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. He was the 26th assistant to the president for National Security Affairs. Upon graduation from the United States Military Academy in 1984, McMaster served as a commissioned officer in the United States Army for thirty-four years before retiring as a Lieutenant General in June 2018.

Connecting Alaskans, by Heather Hudson, tells the unique history of extending communication services including telephony, radio, television and the Internet throughout rural Alaska. The book includes an analysis of successful policies and strategies to serve Alaska’s remote regions, as well as how Alaskans’ innovation, advocacy and persistence helped to connect more than 200 isolated villages. The purpose of this study is to identify several areas of forensic interest within the Yahoo! Messenger application, which are of forensic significance. This study focuses on new areas of interest within the file structure of Windows Vista and Windows 7. One of the main issues with this topic is that little research has been previously conducted on the new Windows platforms. Previously conducted research indicates the evidence found on older file structures, such as Windows XP, as well as outdated versions of Yahoo! Messenger. Several differences were found within the Yahoo Messenger's registry keys and directory structure on Windows Vista and Windows 7 as compared to Windows XP. About the speaker: Final year PhD student in Cyber Forensics in College of Technology. Completed my under graduate studies in India in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering. Completed my Masters from Oklahoma State University in Telecommunications Management. Got interested in the filed of Digital Forensics in my last semester at Oklahoma State University after taking a course in Digital Forensics. Area of interest is social networking in teens, forensic investigation.
This seminar will provide an overview of how Information Security (AKA Cyber Security, AKA INFOSEC) engineering, requirements analysis and security policies and other activities fit into the overall life cycle of an IT system. We will define an INFOSEC systems engineering methodology using industry best practices and we will define the major steps or key activities in that systems engineering methodology. We will also discuss what the role of Information Systems Security Engineering and the Systems Security Engineers should be in the Life Cycle processes. About the speaker: Mr. Dill has been working in information security for 35 years, primarily in IT and communications systems architecture & design and operations & maintenance. Currently he is the CyberSecurity Solution Family Chief Architect, responsible for the coordination and execution of Cyber Security Research and Development within IS&GS and managing contracted R&D with other businesses and at universities. He has been with Lockheed Martin since 1991. In the past Mr. Dill led R&D projects in cross-domain information sharing, multilevel security, Information Assurance management systems, data provenance, identity management and intrusion detection and atmospheric sounding. Other work experiences include IT over satellite comms systems architecture and program management, IA training and career development, C2 program management for the White House Communications Agency, Communications-Electronics Repair Activity Management, DSCS Satellite Terminal Station Chief, and Avionics and Armament Repair Management. Mr. Dill holds a BS in Biology/Botany from Bucknell University, a MS in Telecommunications Management from the University of Maryland and received his initial training in Information Security courtesy of the US Army.
