There are plenty of milestone anniversaries in Pearl Jam history that we have to celebrate in 2025 - the 25th anniversary of the Binaural tour and the 20th anniversary of the 2005 Canadian leg come to mind, but one of the big anniversaries that we'll be digging into this year is the 30th anniversary of the legendary 1995 Vitalogy tour. This was a year of classic shows and moments from places like Red Rocks and Soldier Field, and in this episode we'll cover the show that kicks off a big year of touring - a Vote For Choice show in Washington DC. There are so many storylines that we have to cover in this one because of all the events that were happening in Pearl Jam's world at the time. There's the scarcity of tickets for this show where you had to send in a postcard to the Ten Club just to enter a lottery, Self Pollution Radio was broadcast a few days prior to this show happening that gave the audience a sneak peak as to how those Vitalogy songs that were all played on the Vs. tour were gonna sound polished up. This is considered to be the first show where Jack Irons is an official band member, and perhaps the biggest storyline is Neil Young's involvement and this stretch of shows ultimately leading to the recording of the Mirrorball record. This show will end with Neil joining the stage to play their first ever version of Act Of Love days after Neil played it with Crazy Horse at the Rock 'N' Roll Hall Of Fame induction. We'll talk about how important that record was for the band and how Neil's influence has stuck with the group ever since. In today's episode we're joined by Brian Horwitz from the Hallucinogenic Recipe podcast, and we'll get to talking about the circulation of this bootleg and some of the other popular 1995 bootlegs, and we'll discuss what boots were must owns once everything digitized in the 2000s. This episode is a very spiritual affair that will have us look deep into the depths of Pearl Jam as a "religion" of sorts. We're discussing Columbus 2010, and during one of Ed's speeches he talks about it being national prayer day and considering turning the band into a religion in order to be tax exempt, and have Stone as their Jesus! So the episode is somewhat molded around the theme of the fanbase celebrating the band as if it were a religion, and how our experiences with the music also creates a common bond with others throughout our community. They even tie performances into this theme such as Faithfull, Marker In The Sand, and of course Alive. While we read from the old testament of Pearl Jam, we are visited by a holy spirit in this show in the form of Mike McCready. During the pre-set, Mike came out and played a two-song solo set, something that he almost never does. Digging into a Stones cover of Dead Flowers and an original song written for his son, we'll talk about his efforts and why a solo record could work really well for him. Another big topic from this show stems from an unsolved mystery of a fan local to the Columbus area. Brian Shaffer disappeared while out with friends in April of 2006, and 18 years later this has remained a cold case. Ed raises awareness to the situation, and it's something that has remained a pinned thread on the Ten Club forum to this day. The band plays a haunting version of Come Back in his honor that makes for one of the most powerful moments at this show. In this episode, Randy and John go where this podcast has (almost) never gone before... to the 2007 tour! While we covered Vic Theater in this podcast's infancy, we've never done the full dive into what's sort of a forgotten year in Pearl Jam history. Outside of the Vic and the Lollapalooza Chicago show, there were only 12 shows played on a European run that included mostly festival dates. The show we cover here happened in London, and was the first arena show there since 2000. Thank you to friend and Patreon, Simon Pountney, for requesting this! This show took place in the aftermath of a massive tour supporting the Self Titled record, featuring many songs from the album that don't get heard often today. Pearl Jam has such a rich history in the city of Boston and it's surrounding parts. Between there, plus Mansfield and Worcester, they've played the area a total of 24 times in their 32 year history. From the famous Ten Club show at The Orpheum in 1994, to the three night stay where they made the attempt to play every song in their catalog at Mansfield in 2003, to more recently when Fenway Park has become the crown jewel venue for them to play, there are a lot of absolute classics to take away from this region. In this episode, we won't be talking about a show that was considered a classic. If there was consideration for one, it would probably be the follow up night 2 show in 2006. But as a night 1 show that didn't have a set topping moment like Leash did the next night, it's easy to misplace it within that massive group previously mentioned. After a memorable show in Krakow on the 2022 European tour, we're set to go back to Poland to cover the Heineken Open'er Festival show from 2010. The show was a day after the Berlin show from that year, which had a touching tribute to the Roskilde victims being the 10th anniversary of the tragedy. That theme was on their minds at this show as Ed has to deal with some early crowd rambunctiousness that he had nearly no patience for. This was in the middle of touring for Backspacer, so we'll be able to catch up on songs from that album for the first time in about 6 months. This is including The Fixer, where we try to make sense of the recent infatuation that blew us away after it was crossed off a setlist earlier in this tour. A night full of broken barricades and pepper spray, one of the glanced over shows from the No Code tour happened in Hartford, Connecticut only days following the massive Randall's Island shows. As wild as some of the mid-90's shows such as Miami 1994 got, this one had a moment that ended in the arrest of 13 fans. During Blood, a massive surge from the lawn crowd broke down the barricade, forcing riot police to invoke pepper spray, which in return caused fans in the seats to leave their section and rush towards the stage. The situation was handled better by Ed than by the police, but after a show that kicked off it's main set with a ton of momentum, the band couldn't let the situation potentially end the night sooner than anticipated. In this episode, we'll touch up on that entire ordeal as well as a great moment during Not For You where Ed gives a speech similar to the infamous Porch speech at Randall's Island. After a 12 year absence, Pearl Jam returned to Sweden in 2012 for the first time since the Binaural tour. Today's episode will focus on that show and how a fanbase that had been deprived of their band came through and surprised a lot of people, basically forcing their hand to return in two years. This is a Patreon request from Michael Jonsson who was ecstatic to see them in his home country for the first time and we'll share his story here. This set defines a pretty typical Pearl Jam move whenever they play a play they haven't visited in a while and that's to hit the crowd with the Ten record. Eight songs off of Ten were played, but possibly considered the rarity of the bunch, Garden is a highlight in a set that was looking for a standout moment. We also get the second and last performance of Kinks cover Better Things that was released as a Ten Club single in 2011, but we'll debate over whether or not their rendition is the best take on the song. This episode takes us to Cleveland for a show on the massive 2006 tour supporting their self-titled record. The big story at the time was coming off of a huge show in Grand Rapids where a slight shake up led to an inspired performance filled with rarities and a different set-up. This show has a few things shaken up itself with the two most notable being Better Man in as the opener and no appearance of Even Flow. The latter of which at the time was turning into a song that long-time Ten Club members rebelled against because of it's frequency. How do they fill in that gap? Well, immediately you lose a big McCready moment, so we have Immortality to help with that, but you also lose a big crowd participation song, which in this case Daughter steps in for. We also get to see a few requests taken in encore 2 that led to some songs you almost never see, including one in which a certain Gossard sings. Along with Cleveland we'll also talk about what's going on with the presumed 2022 tour and get you a little prepared for the upcoming Ed and The Earthlings shows. What happens when a venue dedicated to corporate sponsorship doles out tickets to non-Ten Club fans in the first ten rows of the building? The band gets to play an extra night allowing cheap lawn seats to fan club members, that's what. In an act of defiance in Clarkston (or Detroit, depending on who you are) Pearl Jam took the stage on the second of two nights and decided to experiment instead of busting out some of the standard favorites. This experiment lead to a whopping seven songs off of Vitalogy that were played and four from No Code, with the No Code tracks in particular standing out the most. This was in a time where In My Tree was barely played, so when it was brought back in rare instances, the band would perform an alternate version stretching out the song's soaring elements. This is a version we don't get to chat about often, so get ready for us to take a few minutes on it. Rarities would be strategically placed throughout this main set as the pace and energy maintained consistent. Songs like Sleight of Hand, Down and Leatherman that don't usually get the call were played, with the latter of those beginning the Man Trilogy. A great show, a great bootleg. We take a trip to Grand Rapids, Michigan for this episode, but if you were to listen to this bootleg, you'd be surprised it wasn't in a major city. After a two night trip in Chicago supporting their self titled, or Avocado album, the band noticed that newer tracks weren't being well received by the Ten Club members that would continuously get the best seats due to their ranking in the lottery. Because they weren't feeding off their energy, if you believe the rumors the band decided to shake things up and give some new faces a chance to get to the front. With new faces comes new energy. This show was driven by the energetic enthusiasm the crowd put in with every song, new and old, and the band fed off that momentum the entire night. Additionally, they decided to do a little experiment with the encore playing 6 slower songs in a row, similar as to how they tend to begin encore sets in this current era. One of the new faces that got a chance to see the band up close is one of our Patreon donors, Bradley Piasecki, who joins us this episode to talk about his experience at this show. We'll talk with him about how the band's placement of certain new songs in the set could've turned off the touring, front row followers as well as what the "experimental" encore has meant for the band moving forward. En cuestión de horas, su amigo Chris Cornell, aquel que le recibió con los brazos abiertos a principios de los 90 en Seattle, había desaparecido para siempre. Eddie no hizo declaraciones, tampoco asistió al entierro en Los Angeles... al día siguiente su gira arrancaba muy lejos de allí... Tim Bierman has worked with Pearl Jam for nearly 20 years, managing their highly successful direct-to-fan platform Ten Club. Years before the music business realized how important direct-to-fan was, Pearl Jam was cultivating a unique relationship with their fans and with their label, Epic Records. Tim and I chat about the band's unique live gigs & the community and creativity that have made them a modern day Grateful Dead.
