1994 was a notable year for Pearl Jam as they spent March and April touring the midwest and the northeast in support of their Vs. record. During this time they were arguably considered to be the biggest band in America, which meant that tickets for their shows were in high demand, but it was mainly due to their decision to play smaller venues. As it was tougher for fans to get their hands on tickets, scalpers were starting to become an issue. This show we're covering comes from Purdue University where the big story is centered around scalpers and a situation that led to a bomb threat being called in prior to the show's start. While the bomb threat was certainly a scare in the moment, all it did was motivate the band. Once it was safe to go back in and start the show, they brought their a-game to the stage. These performances define the intensity of the era as nearly every song features Ed's screeching vocals piercing through the speakers, Stone's hypnotic groove finding it's sweet spot, and Mike's superior talent on display. We'll discuss some of the best of the era such as Go, Animal, Daughter, Black, Garden and Porch. We'll also get a taste of Vitalogy with very early performances of Tremor Christ and Not For You. We're two weeks away from our first show of 2025, so we'll kick off the episode with some of our thoughts about what's happening in Pearl Jam world at this current time, and we'll talk about a man who goes by the name Frank X who may or may not be a lizard king faking his death! We've come to the end of Pearl Jam's 2024 Dark Matter tour, and our final destination of the year is Sydney, Australia. We go back to a show from 1995 in this episode to get you hyped up for the last shows. This was on the band's first ever tour of Australia, so they are familiarizing themselves with this crowd and territory. Not to mention, this was at a time when the band went on hiatus from TicketMaster, and there was a ticket situation surrounding scalpers from this show that we'll get into detail on. We know the drill. It's the Vitalogy tour. The performances are explosive, gritty and loud. While Ed was dealing with a sore throat at this show, it didn't hinder versions of fan favorites such as Go, Spin The Black Circle, Corduroy, Not For You and Porch. This show also took place on Jeff's birthday, so we get a big cake celebration and an appearance from a Chili Pepper to cause chaos. Flea joins the band on stage to play a very unique rendition of Needle And The Damage Done on bass with no accompanyment from Pearl Jam. After next week, we'll be busy covering the best shows of 2024! Don't forget to vote via our social media pages for which shows you'd like to hear us talk about in December! The tag line of the Norseman Triathlon is “This Race is Not For You.” The Norseman is a full distance triathlon in Norway comprised of a freezing cold 2.4 mile swim, over 10,000 feet of climbing in 112 miles, and a marathon with a hill called “Zombie Hill.” Over 5000 people apply each year for only 250 slots. So what motivated Frankie Forzoni, as a newbie triathlete, to enter the lottery and claim her spot? Her story is incredible. She was hit by a car in 2020 and had serious injuries, began swimming in her rehab, and decided to jump into triathlon. The Norseman was her FIRST long course triathlon and not only that, she trained for this race in hot and flat Singapore. But once you hear Frankie talk in this podcast, you will realize why and how she succeeded in one the hardest triathlons in the world. This is a great race recap, from her build to equipment, to race day. Have a listen!
We're picking up where we left off last week as this episode focuses on night two of the two show run from Pearl Jam's shows in Atlantic City in 2005. High octane performances, an intimate crowd and a Bruce Springsteen cover happen in night one, but what could possibly top that? A song debut from an unreleased album, Stone Gossard grabbing the mic and an appearance from a spaceman? Those three things could help the cause. The band kicked off this show with a dynamite version of Present Tense and from there it just kept getting better and better. Immortality impacts the crowd with an intense ending, Not For You has a fun new section improved, they let Stone sing even though the crowd wanted to drop the Leash and we get the live debut of Avocado track Gone seven months before the album came out. We will spend a lengthy amount of time on the debut due to it's uniqueness in the catalog. The song was written that weekend in Ed's hotel room and featured no other band member's accompanyment. So how was it able to be as impactful as it was considering the elements? You'll find out in the show! Also, we see a rock legend join up with the band for Rockin' In The Free World here, and since we have finished up the North American run of our tour, we'll spend some time discussing some of the OTOTOs played at Ohana Festival. While we give Whale Song some love here, the episode was recorded before the band broke out Gremmie Out Of Control on night two. So perhaps you'll hear a voice talk about it real quick at a very opportune time! It's a big week here on the podcast with lots to celebrate! It's Dark Matter week! Coming off the heels of the film experience, we'll share our instant reaction to listening to the album in that environment including what songs we've gravitated towards, and what we're excited to hear live. Keep in mind that the Live On 4 Legs listening party will happen on Thursday night when the record drops everywhere, if you want to be a part of that round table, please reach out! Although the brand new record is the lead, we don't want to bury the purpose of the episode because it's extremely vital to the history of Pearl Jam. The Paramount Theater show to close out the 1994 tour in the gallows of Madison Square Garden was one of a few fan club shows from this year. It comes a day after their legendary Saturday Night Live performance, a little over the week since the death of Kurt Cobain, and it is the final show involving drummer Dave Abbruzzese. While the fan club crowd was red hot and participated in every song from the hits to the b-sides, this was a night where Ed had a lot on his mind as he was unsure about the future of this band. We share excerpts from an article written in Melody Maker where a frustrated Vedder expresses his anger over Kurt's death and even questions his own mortality. Directly following this show, Pearl Jam would cancel their plans for a summer tour and part with Dave A shortly afterwards. Big storylines aside, this is an electric show with some absolute barnburner performances. Rearviewmirror, Daughter and Not For You all came off the heels of the SNL performance the night prior and proved to be just as powerful as they were on TV, other Vitalogy songs such as Whipping and Satan's Bed are notable moments, Ten b-sides Alone and Footsteps were huge crowd moments and Garden and Blood were huge standouts as well. We'll have a plethora of guests here as Javier's Gear Guru segments will focus in on Dave A's contributions to the band, and we invite Patrick and Brian from our sister podcast, Hallucinogenic Recipe, to come in and discuss the bootleg distribution for this show back in the mid-90's. This episode is about uncovering unsolved mysteries within Pearl Jam lore. We're back to celebrating the 30th anniversary of the memorable 1994 tour, and we find ourselves covering a Memphis show that does not get the acclaim that other shows from this run do. But perhaps this show is more significant than we think? We invite on Patron Mike Cribier to share his stories from this night that had been held back for quite some time. After sharing his recollection of this show to Pearl Jam fan run sites, his information could not be verified, and his story was never told. We're going to rectify that in this episode! As video from the early 90s tends to be a crapshoot for some Pearl Jam shows, this is indeed a show that does not have any visual aid. So how is it possible to tell if or when things are happening just by listening to bootleg audio? The stories that get revealed feature a fan getting heavily involved in Leash, Mike crowd surfing while wearing a Nosferatu mask and potentially the most important, Ed smashing his mic stand into the ground to create a massive hole. This is something that was famously done in Boston only weeks after, but could this have been the first ocassion? We'll get into talking about those storylines, as well as some excellent performances with the highlights being Deep, Not For You, Porch and Blood. We'll also talk about a pre-Vitalogy version of Last Exit... that a fan in the crowd knows the lyrics to? In 2005, Pearl Jam dedicated the month of September to tour across an area they've never touched from coast to coast - the great plains and prairies of Canada. 17 shows over 24 days led to some absolute classics from this band that may get forgotten over time, but that's part of why we're here is to keep the discussion alive! This show in Winnipeg that we're covering in this episode is a great example of a Canadian small town that never hosted Pearl Jam before this tour attempt, and the crowd ended up delivering big time. At the newly built arena that would later become the home of the reformed Winnipeg Jets, Pearl Jam happened to draw the largest capacity audience for the one year since it had been built. From the bootleg, you can tell that there isn't a single seat empty in the building. That led the band to pull out some surprises that you almost never get to see at normal shows, such as Better Man opening the night, Blood closing encore 1 after Alive, and Indifference opening the second encore. With plenty of Neil Young references and a wonderful moment where a fan got her request for Smile granted, nearly every song has their moment in the sun at this show. Lest we forget, a little flip phone call during Daughter that leads to a fun moment. Not only will we dig into the strength of the crowd here, but we'll have the Gear Guru step in and do a little breakdown on Stone during Not For You and Do The Evolution, and he'll also breakdown why Mike's modem was running at the end of Blood. For the second week in a row, we're diving back into 2022 to discuss one of Randy's favorite shows he's ever been to that happened in Camden. Originally slated for Baltimore during what was going to be the 2020 run, the band making a return to the Philadelphia area meant that there were no punches going to be pulled, this was destined to be a monster set. Seeing that the city has had rich and historical significance within the 32 years of this band, there were many callbacks to other Philly shows, including the legendary JC Dobbs show in 1991. Nine of the ten songs from that show were played that night as the earliest eras of Pearl Jam dominated this set. A lot of this episode will focus around Randy's personal stories and why this was an important show to him. There were songs played on this night that were very high up on his wishlist. Ones that he'd seen before, but not in over a decade, and a few that he'd been chasing for just as long. We'll highlight the memories created from hearing songs like Hard To Imagine, Untitled/MFC and Inside Job that were incredibly powerful, experience making moments. We'll also go in depth on an explosive version of Retrograde as well as an excellent Not For You. A big story from this show was that Ed and the band invited All-In contest winners, Richie and Dermot Berg to the stage, after a full day of experiencing the preparation of what goes in to putting together a Pearl Jam show. Back last September, we invited the Berg's onto the podcast to tell their story. We'll relive a clip from that, but give the full episode that's available in our archives a listen because there's no lack of awesome information shared there. We'll read your answers for question of the week where we asked whether you preferred shows in an amphitheater or arena setting, and our Gear Guru segment this week will focus on Do The Evolution playing off of the song's original pace and Quick Escape's overall sound from the Gigaton tour. We're heading across the pond to London for a show that had the honorable distinction of being dubbed an "ape/man" bootleg back on the Binaural tour. It was a two night stint at the Wembley Arena, and as the norm within the history of this band, night two shows are usually can't miss. But this night two kind of planted an early seedling for what future shows of this nature would look like, playing an entirely different set than the previous night and adding in some rarities for the fans attending both nights to feel like they got two very distinct shows. With only four brand new Binaural songs performed on this night compared to night one's eight, and a limited amount of Ten songs, the band went into every corner of their catalog to impress this crowd. We'll spend some time talking about a the more uncommon songs such as a monster performance of Habit, the second instance where Untitled/MFC were played consecutively, In Hiding being played for the first time in two years and a tremendous Off He Goes. But the story here will be found in Not For You. Played at a slower tempo perhaps similar to a Neil Young song, this version would end in utter chaos in which a certain front man would receive a nice battle wound to the skull. Our question of the week that you answered is have you ever been to a two night stay in one location, and what show did you think was the better of the two? Plus, our Gear Guru Javier returns to discuss some of Mike's effect pedals that created the era specific sound for songs like Grievance and Nothing As It Seems. I've been to hell I spell it... spell it DMV. We head down to the mid-Atlantic for this episode to cover a show from the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland that took place in the heart of the No Code era in 1996. It's the perfect year for those great stories that revolve around ordering tickets from non-Ticketmaster venues and the budding collectables scene in the Pearl Jam community now featuring nightly posters. To bring us back to that point in time, we invite our Patron Brian Tuchalski on to the episode to retrace his memory of his first show and some of his favorite moments from that day. 1996 isn't widely known as an era where Ed connects with the crowd often, but this show has a moment that may set it apart from others. During the bridge of Not For You, Ed stops to address the crowd to apologize if he's missed any lyrics, and informs them that although the song may be called Not For You, it isn't them that the song isn't about. This kickstarted a great night for the crowd as they took over on songs such as Jeremy, Better Man, Blood and Yellow Ledbetter. Tune in to check out everything, including the question of the week - what Pearl Jam era would you travel back to if you had a time machine? Plus, we invite our Gear Guru Javier back on to talk about Jeff's cello sounding bassline on Who You Are. The night after playing a notable show in Berlin that was broadcast on FM stations all over the world, the band played a show in Hamburg and made allusions to it being better than the night before. The crowd of 7,000, who had been dying to see them ever since they last played in 1992, brought their a-game to the Sportshalle. Nearly every song had a major crowd response, clapping sections in spots where we usually don't hear them, especially for new songs that only had very few plays under their belt. It allowed the band to elevate their game and gave them a nice little spark of motivation that made the songs soar and excel. This episode is very important to all of our German listeners out there, but it's also important to us as a podcast. We were able to make a few different setlist discoveries that some of the other fansites may have missed. Listen to check out what we found! We'll also hear from some of our European fans on Twitter about how Pearl Jam's popularity in 1996 mirrored what was happening to them in the United States. Performances to look out for in this show: Last Exit, Who You Are, Corduroy, Whipping, Sometimes, Rearviewmirror, Not For You, Daughter and State Of Love And Trust. Thanks to a request from our Patron Joe Kolbenschlag, we get to focus on a show from 1995 that occurred during a small window of shows in that September. This one is Las Cruces, New Mexico, which may not be one of the many jaw dropping shows from 1995, but is still damn good in it's own right. We get to talk about lots from the Vitalogy era - a random rare appearance from Satan's Bed, a fully explosive I Got Shit (ok, noticed how bad that was two seconds after typing it. It's staying in.) and a killer Immortality that reigned king of the era with it's incredible, jammy outro. We'll also get to see a rare tag off of Daughter, The Who's "I'm One", a 10 minute Porch that ranges from bluesy to jammy all inclusive, and stunning versions of Corduroy, Not For You, Rearviewmirror and Blood. Also in this episode we'll talk about some end of the tour topics featuring a few things we can't wait to hear on bootleg, and some of our favorite moments from our travels. We'll also hear a story from Erin Mackay who had the version of Other Side that was played in Quebec City dedicated to her for her brother. Caution: story has themes of mental illness and suicide involved. If you wish not to listen to that part, skip over it at 9 minutes in and jump to 13 minutes in. The final show of the 2022 (unless additional shows are added later) will emanate from Denver, CO, the same place where they closed out a tour the last time they were there in 2014. This episode will focus on being in Denver at the beginning of a tour, and that happened by in 1994. The third show of a three night stint in 1993 playing CU Boulder was canceled due to security issues. So vowing to never play the university again and wanting to make it up to those kids who missed out, the band played two shows in Denver to kick off the 1994 run. Both nights were filled with surprises, mostly involving never before heard Vitalogy songs. As night one featured the Spin The Black Circle live debut, we're going to talk about the debut of Not For You that took place on night 2. This was the beginning of a relationship with the song that would define a lot of what they were going through in 1994 and 1995. We'll discuss it's origin and inspiration for writing it. We'll also cover the live debut of Street Fighting Man, a W.M.A. tag off of Porch, a Rats tag off of Daughter, and not one, but TWO band members losing their pants! Let's focus on more September show locations for this episode! In this one, we're gonna discuss a St. Louis show that happened on the 2014 US tour leg thanks to a Patreon requested episode from David Ruthman. This show's story centers around a few themes. This night happened to be the same night that the playoffs started for the Cardinals that year, so we receive many scoreboard updates and references. We also get to see a lot of dedications and mentions of fans who made it out to see them, some against all odds. That will bring us into a good conversation about how the band's propensity to acknowledge fans who are going through a rough patch draws this community closer together. It being a Lightning Bolt tour show, we'll get a few songs from the record, some heavily played and others rarely. It's mostly a greatest hits set with a few nice surprises including the live debut of Imagine, great versions of Not For You, Footsteps, Given To Fly, Better Man and a chilling version of Daughter performed in the wake of Michael Brown's death in Ferguson, MO. These songs are all awesome, but to enjoy them in a physical format you need a way to play cassettes, because they are only available on cassette (well mostly, a couple of them were pressed to vinyl but they are sold out). Everything here is from a newish band that has limited releases under their belt, so now is a great episode to discover new music. Lots of stellar hardcore adjacent, melodic hardcore and straight edge HC in this one. Tracks played:1. Field of Flames - "Burn Your World"2. Squint - "Dealer Wins"3. Cape Fade - "Lose My Head"4. Candy Apple - "Bloodsong"5. Anklebiter - "Not For You"6. Thirdface - "Chosen"7. Domain - "Life's Cold Grasp"8. Dull Mourning - "Demigod"

i’m realizing that while i mentioned indiepop and hardcore (again, i know hardcore is an apex genre with lots of nuance that i don’t know much about) last week as feeling siloed in some ways, i think it’s so interesting that they both specifically overlap quite a bit. maybe more than other seemingly siloed genres within diy? like, in oxnard some years ago there was crossover between yay records pop and local hardcore (nardcore). maybe it was just the folks that i was around, but there was totally overlap. and then up north in san jose there seemed to be a lot of crossover in spaces like think and die thinking, which was a pretty mixed fest. this is california centric cause that’s where i am but i imagine this happens elsewhere? i have friends that crossover in the pacific northwest too so i assume it does. also, was it like that in the 90s as well? is it like that internationally?the first radio show i did in 2005 was with my friend cole and it was called “cuddle and core” and it was basically a hardcore/twee combo show. and it worked pretty well. people appreciate a dichotomy. they compliment each other. makes sense.DOWNLOAD RECORDINGsubscribe to the podcast here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/5432fun00:00 (intro by omar)00:20 R.M.F.C. “The Clue” Hive Vol. 202:00 Frankie Rose “Play For Today” Seventeen Seconds05:38 Gomme “Floss” Absent Healing09:00 CORNERS “Damages” The Floor12:35 Not For You “It Can’t See” Drown15:28 Lily & Horn Horse “Tree” 4 partners road16:50 Banny Grove “So Happy So Good” 4 partners road20:44 Verdigrls “Women In Fiction” Small Moves EP25:58 Village Of Spaces “Wood Workers Litany” Shaped By Place28:41 tender perennial “appetency” short songs about longing31:09 Zula “Going Into Work” Stepping EP34:16 Dumb “Submission” Club Nites36:41 VIRVON VARVON “ALLERGIES” MIND CANCER39:31 Sweet Lil “Dust” Slow Moving44:14 Judy and the Jerks “Butter” Music for Donuts45:58 Fred Beans “Leo” The Peanut Butter & Jelly Dogs48:07 Coughy “V” Ocean Hug48:59 Good Morning “People Say” The Option50:47 Martha “Wrestlmania VIII” Love Keeps Kicking52:33 Frank Hurricane and Hurricanes of Love “Life is Spiritual” Life is Spiritual
For the entire month of June, we are digging in to a collection of shows that may have gotten lost throughout the shuffle over the years. Why? Because it is the only time that Pearl Jam had ever played in the states we're covering. First up is Casper, Wyoming. Not at all a hot bed for music fans. But Pearl Jam on their quest to reject Ticketmaster venues had a limited amount of options to turn to. With the original show being set up in Boise, Idaho, another OTOTO state, Wyoming ended up being the home to the kick off of an incredibly memorable 1995 tour. We'll have some fun with this one. On the YouTube video for this show, there is a section where a guy named James Lane is seen in a van and explains that after the show they're going to be broadcasting a show on pirate radio. This of course is Monkeywrench Radio, something that Ed broadcasted for the entirety of the 1995 tour on the road. We'll talk about that era and why this caused a divide within the band. We'll also get into some of the performances including the live debut of Long Road, Corduroy, Why Go, Not For You, Immortality and Blood. A night full of broken barricades and pepper spray, one of the glanced over shows from the No Code tour happened in Hartford, Connecticut only days following the massive Randall's Island shows. As wild as some of the mid-90's shows such as Miami 1994 got, this one had a moment that ended in the arrest of 13 fans. During Blood, a massive surge from the lawn crowd broke down the barricade, forcing riot police to invoke pepper spray, which in return caused fans in the seats to leave their section and rush towards the stage. The situation was handled better by Ed than by the police, but after a show that kicked off it's main set with a ton of momentum, the band couldn't let the situation potentially end the night sooner than anticipated. In this episode, we'll touch up on that entire ordeal as well as a great moment during Not For You where Ed gives a speech similar to the infamous Porch speech at Randall's Island. Also in this episode, we'll touch up on ticket updates after the Ten Club lottery dropped, and we celebrate the life of Foo Fighters drummer, Taylor Hawkins. Am I the only person in the world who has had a “Wolf In Sheep's Clothing” experience? I think Not! Where you were deceived into wholeheartedly believing that someone was truly for you, only yo discover over time that this was the furthest thing from the truth? Believe me, I could probably write an entire book on this subject write here! However, in the meantime, I have opted to share my perspective on this subject in hopes that it will help Someone not fall in the same deceptive trap. People who are operating as sheep knowing they are wolves, intend to destroy you. Whether it be your Brand, Your Reputation, Your Trust, Your Perception of Them, Your Perception of Yourself, the list goes on. Most times, you do not even recognize the wolf is not a sheep until the damage has already been done. This is a sad reality for a lot of people. And although everyone is not as naive as I once was, to Believe what people said rather than watch their actions, I have learned the expensive way that ‘wolves in sheep's clothing' is not a figment of my imagination. These types of people DO exist. They intentionally Prey on you, rather that Pray a fervent and righteous prayer For You. Bottom line… Wolves in Sheep's Clothing are against you! Not For You!!! I hope this Episode encourages Someone. Be encouraged. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Now let me see you 1-2..3,4,5...? Sarah, what the hell are you doing? This week we're joined by talented filmmaker Ifeanyi Awachie to discuss 2001's problematic fave, Save the Last Dance. A staple of the MTV generation, Save the Last Dance has a lot of things going on. Reluctant white savior? Check. Pick Me Black love interest? Check. Stereotypical supporting cast? Check. Every trash can in Chicago on fire? Triple check. We break down whatever the hell Sarah thought she was doing at the end (I mean she got into Julliard but...), the troublesome nature of Sarah and Derrick's relationship, and the fact that somehow the same choreographer that did this movie also did three of the best Aaliyah videos. You absolutely need to follow Ifeanyi on all the social medias (@ifeanyiawachie). She has so much cool stuff going on, like the debut of her new film This Thing is Not For You. Welcome everyone to 2022... another fantastic year of guest mixes awaits us, and we kick off in style with London based duo, Jive Talk. Since forming, the two friends (Jonny & Sam) have played an impressive array of the UK's best parties and festivals, as well as hosting their own ‘Jive Talk & Friends' stage takeovers at the much loved Noisily and Gottwood Festivals, the latter for which they're now official residents. Over the last 3 years they've released a fine array of wax on the likes of Gottwax, Tropical Disco Records, Semi Delicious, Midnight People, and Saint Wax, to name a few... as well as their own imprint, Not For You. Their releases mirror their eclectic DJ style – covering a range of sounds and influences. Expect to see much more from this fruity twosome over the coming year with plenty of exciting gigs and releases on the horizon. Artist: @jivetalkdjs

A basic truth of business: this isn't for everyone. Entrepreneurship isn't a better way of making a living, just a different one. And only certain kinds of people are suited for it. If you don't like hearing about periods, this episode is NOT FOR YOU! With that time of the month being what seems like every week of the month, we figured we would just tell you way too much about ourselves this week by opening up about how our time of the month is. But mostly we end up on tangents like always. What is new?
