Airing date: 01/15/2019 Lie Detecting Eye Scanner - Huawei And China First Strike Military Craig Peterson: 0:00 Hey, good morning, Craig Peterson here. Got my little robot running in the background, cleaning the floors. These things are great if you don't have one of these. I have a Roomba. One of their newer models that I got on sale. It was a beta winners and alpha testing, actually. So I love these things. Anyhow, this morning, I was on with Jim Polito, and we talked about a couple of different things. We talked about Huawei and their impact. We also talked about this Blade Runner style I scanning a lie detector. Is that something that's coming our way? Should we be worried about it. And we've been doing a lot of work here on the DIY security for business. So keep your eye out for those videos. And those courses. We're going to be doing some coaching and consulting and everything. This is going to be something out, never done this before. So you're going to get a great deal on that is as well as the free training that comes as part of that live. So anyways, here we go with Mr. Polito Have a great day. Everybody Unknown 1:03 sees everybody's favorite genius. And he's here now our good friend and Tech Talk guru. Craig Peterson. Good morning, sir. Unknown 1:13 Good morning. I'm not sure I like being back from Naples, Florida. You're a little cool. Oh. Amy. Unknown 1:21 Danny Do I still have Here it is. Unknown 1:25 Everybody for Craig Peterson is back from Naples, Florida. Oh, how he's. We suffered. Craig, come on. Canadian. Canadian. You're supposed to be able to Unknown 1:44 forget it. I don't even want to get into it. Unknown 1:47 The weather? Yeah, it won't. It was 89 when I laughed driving because we went and visited a couple of people work for me down there. My daughter at nine next morning. Got up. It was 69 next morning. We get up it was 49 as we continue to go further north and then and then it was 29 and now Yo, single digit Yeah. Talk to the Chamber of Commerce and get this taken care of. Unknown 2:14 Yeah, this weather What did we get right outside here? Well, we got 23 now but you're up you're up farther north. So anyway, Craig's again I'll Unknown 2:28 I'll keep playing and if you do it oh keep doing my cousin's down in Naples right now for the season so really like to be in Naples all right here and if you know what if you want to be able to tell if I'm telling the truth about I want to be in Naples right now you could I think it's fair to say yeah, Jim's telling the truth about that now what if you thought I was lying about that there's a new type of technology available that will scan my eyes hey I was a big fan of the movie Blade Runner which was a great Harrison Ford movie I never saw the remake but the original Blade Runner you telling me that they're soon going to have the technology to be able to tell if I'm lying just by my eyes Unknown 3:25 well it looks that way are it is on its way. You know we've had a number of technologies over the years to try and get people telling lies you've probably seen in the back of magazines I remember this as a kid you know right next to the X ray glasses Unknown 3:44 little miss a little thing that you could use to listen to people's voices and felt they were lying to you and that technology's been around for a while so you can take a voice sample and do some serious analysis on it and often Cal someone's got the stress markers right that's what they're looking for typically is a stress markers and everybody knows what a polygraph is. We've seen them all over TV and the movies for years right and the whole idea in fact Penn and Teller did wonders their famous TV shows about polygraphs and how inaccurate they were and all it's doing is just measuring your heartbeat and your and your skin conductivity. Right Unknown 4:32 It's ga stanza said it's only a lie. If you believe it's a lie. Unknown 4:39 He is right from Unknown 4:42 if you're a very good liar, you can beat the poly Unknown 4:46 well how often do you think people do that? How frequently do you think professional polygraph die or Unknown 4:54 get it right Unknown 4:55 now that i don't know i don't know so mean I do know that it is still inadmissible in court which means that judges have said okay that's fine but we're not going you can use that as an investigative tool law enforcement but we're not going to use it as evidence so I can't be that high Unknown 5:19 yeah human operators of course are interpreting what they see based on the questions that are being asked and and which up 62 maybe as much as 75% accurate at the absolute past the polygraph so this is new technology kind of like absolutely what what they were using and in Blade Runner and I did see the second movie and I did like it It wasn't the same It was definitely a little different universe so yeah I don't know you missed a lot there but that Blade Runner saying where they hook it up and they look in your eyes This is called IV patch This is a new company it was bark back I should say by Mark Cuban and they've been around now for four or five years so quite a while this wasn't Unknown 6:11 this wasn't on Shark Tank was it Unknown 6:13 No I don't think you'll realize I think this is one of his independence of fun that he did oh Unknown 6:20 I'm just joking Unknown 6:23 I want to 25% of the company $400,000 Unknown 6:27 Yeah exactly. Well he might have done that anyways I don't know maybe he gives us on Shark Tank be super watching you never know right yeah um. But it is a next generation lie detector but bottom line justice to scams as said yeah this is really the same old polygraph now. Unknown 6:48 She's so please who are saying that it is better. They're claiming an accuracy rate of 86%. Okay. That give or take 10 to 20% better than the Polycom graph Unknown 7:02 is a while back. Yes. And kill if you don't think you're lying. Not really ever show anything. So it's, it's basically Unknown 7:09 looking for the same markers, right? It's looking to see Unknown 7:17 it's looking to see if it's if it's really, really working. I mean, if you really, really stressed out Unknown 7:25 yeah, if you think you're lying, because your eyes going to construct or dilate based on whether you think you're lying. Whether you are feeling uncomfortable. Now they're claiming they've got 500 customers and 40 countries, there are people who are deploying it. And I got this great quote from University Minnesota Professor professor there, no science and psychology saying, it's astounding to me that they're paying customers deploying this technology and actually screening people with that. So expect it to be in the test. They like that we Unknown 8:03 have a problem with it. If you are an as an investigative tool for police. And if and if a suspect wants to submit to it. Like if I if I had a loved one missing and they wanted to make sure I didn't have anything to do with it. I'd say give me the poly Give me the whatever the test is, so that you'll stop looking at me and you'll start looking for my loved one. But I wouldn't I certainly wouldn't submit to it for other reasons. And yeah, I in court, I wouldn't want that. So okay. Literally a little simpler deployment of the technology. But the same idea looking for stress. Now speaking of stress, and we're talking with Craig Peterson. And in the short time we have left, we got another important topic, but I want to remind you at the end of the segment, we're going to give you an 800 number. He text My name to it, Jim and Craig will send you the information we discuss today. Plus a whole bunch of other stuff. And he'll keep you abreast of everything important that's going on in technology. Who Wait, am I pronouncing the name of the Chinese company properly? Huawei? Wow. Wow. is a company a massive telecom company in China. And they are I'm concerned about them, because I'm afraid that because there is no line between Corporation in the state in China that if I'm using Say it again. Well, why why why? Why always technology the state is China is going to be listening in. Unknown 9:50 Yeah, you got some real good concerns there. And one of the problems we have in the US is, guess what our phones are using much of our backbone for our telephony networks. And even some of our data network is provided by Huawei. So we have some evidence that Huawei has been breaking sanctions with Iran and hence the arrest in Canada of their CFO when she was changing planes over in Vancouver. I understand that was just yet another arrest of Huawei executive. I think he was in South Korea, I'm trying to remember but but they China's largest telecom company is really because of the technology they happen to us. They can monitor the electronic communications of anyone using one way technology and apparently some people have found that happening Yeah, and one way is now illegal to use for illegal the rules have been changed cannot be sold on in the military bases turn up to us by our government, at least not directly. Unknown 11:06 Yeah, see, this is I get it. We were just talking about company in Western Mass, that's Chinese. And it's great. They're they're bringing great jobs to the region. They build rail cars and these cars are going to be used I believe on the orange line in Boston on the T great jobs manufacturing Chinese company but people are sounding the alarm and say, wait a minute, these just aren't rail cars they have electronic technology within them what is our guarantee that there's not some backdoor in there that somebody in China can throw a switch but click a mouse and shut down that train and and it's that's why I wanted to bring this up that you were talking about about this you know, that's a small example how about a massive telecom company whose technology is in just about everything over here? Yeah, Unknown 12:00 yeah, exactly. And while we set to overtake apple and the iPhone and the smartphone market here in the US and worldwide it's a real concern it's a very big concern we got to remember just as you said this the People's Liberation Army Communist China you know, it's you're talking about PC politically correct earlier today. And believe me, they are communists, this is Red China read used to mean communist, right? Yeah. And then they change the terminology on us and they are not our friends. China's current philosophy is to use technology as a first strike attack. It's true their enemies. Unknown 12:41 That's true, Unknown 12:43 Craig, we're up against the clock here. So folks, if you have a text My name to this number 855-385-5553, that's 855-385-5553 Unknown 13:00 Standard data and text rates apply. Our interview this week is with ultrarunner and author Brian Burk.  Brian is joining us to talk about his latest book 26.2 Tips to run your best Marathon.  If you've been listening to the podcast for a while, you may recall Brian joining us in February of 2017 to talk about his fiction book, Running To Leadville.  If you are curious to hear that interview you can find episode #61.  You can listen to all of the MHE episodes by going to the MHE website and clicking on the "Interviews" menu.  All of the shows for the years 2016, 17 and 18 are listed in date order. Today's show is supported by iKOR Labs.  iKOR is a clean, natural source of recovery enhancing CBD that protects your body from the stresses of training, improves recovery from intense efforts and helps you maintain a positive mental state. The most bio-available CBD product on the market, iKOR is a highly protective anti-oxidant and effective anti-inflammatory.  WADA and USADA legal.  Used by world class professional athletes.  Save 20% by using the code "endurance" at checkout. Go to www.ikorlabs.com for more details.  There is also a great video of Tim Don on their website that you'll want to check out.  Speaking of Kona and Tim, you will see Tim Don wearing the iKOR logo on his kit in Kona this year. Thanks to last week's guest, Coach Jim Vance on how he uses Today'sPlan and data to build athlete performance and confidence.  Author of Triathlete Science, Triathlon 2.0 and Running with Power.  Coach of athletes such as Ben Kanute with great success.  If you haven't heard the interview, go back and listen to episode #145.   Listener question: Janyne Kizer wrote in: What would be really cool is if the software imported the weather for the time/location of our workout. That way both athlete and coach could see that it was 1000% humidity and that's why the heart rate was so high, etc.   In the interview Jim had explained that you can enable the calendar view to display the weather for the day on the calendar where the athlete trains.  It actually uses the lat/long of the gps files that are being uploaded.  On the calendar it shows the day's high, low and humidity I confirmed with Jayne that she was asking for the temperature and humidity at the time of the workout.  We took that question to Benji Marshall of Today'sPlan and he wrote back: We show the temperature at the time of the activity in the bottom left when you open the activity. You can also add the avg, min and max temp in various areas of the platform that you can configure. This is the temperature that is recorded by the head unit at the time of the activity so is prone to being a little off as the head units can record some erroneous data in this regards but generally is quite good. See some screenshots below.  As for humidity I have put in a ticket to have this included as a field in the field select areas of the platform so it too can be added to the view by the user. Thanks Jim for the interview.  Thank  you Jayne for the question.  Thanks Benji for the response.  Our interview is sponsored by Riplaces.  Riplaces are the no tie laces with custom tension for the perfect fit.  Pro triathlete proven and endorsed, most durable elastic bungee lace system available and they come in the super cool MHE logo package for $19.98  https://www.riplaces.com/collections/mile-high-endurance Brian Burk grew up in Erie, PA.  He and wife (Michele), two wonderful children (Jessica and Anthony) and their dog (Hanna) now live in Virginia Beach.  He served in the US Air Force for 20 years.  Over the last 14 years he's logged over 12,000 miles in a good number of states, and overseas locations like Crete, Iraq, Sicily, Greenland, United Kingdom, and Qatar. Do you tag people in pictures on Facebook?  Listen in as Craig talks with Jim Polito about Privacy, Facebook and Facial Recognition. Did you hear about Imran Awan and the DNC Hack?  Craig discusses with Jim some of the ties that these IT workers had with the Russian Hack.   Find out more on CraigPeterson.com --- Related Articles: Facebook Is Still Abusing Your Privacy --- Transcript: Below is a rush transcript of this segment, it might contain errors. Airing date: 07/17/2018 Facebook Abusing Your Privacy Again, Facial Recognition, Russian Hacking Craig Peterson: [00:00:00] Hi everybody. Today, we talked about Apple just a little bit but mostly about Facebook. We talked about Imran Awan, you remember the I.T. staffer there was working for the Democrats and with a tie in to the Russians. Wow, it gets kind of crazy but it's all about privacy today with Jim Polito, so here we go. [00:00:26] If he was running Amazon they wouldn't have crashed yesterday.  [00:00:30] I'm talking about our tech guru and good friend Craig Peterson, Good morning, sir. [00:00:36] Hey good morning. I noticed that too. I was on, and yeah I was getting all kinds of errors trying to do the one day deal that they had. I don't know if I can extend it or not. But, yeah they had problems.  [00:00:49] Well they didn't have Craig Peterson on their side. No they don't.  [00:00:54] I built some of the biggest Web sites in the world with the biggest databases. Long before Jeff Bezos got involved with the whole Amazon thing, and yeah there's something I've done for decades, now. It's scary to think back. I said the other day to someone yeah you know I've been doing professionally computer networking since 1975 and all of a sudden I did the math and felt old. That would be worse.  [00:01:25] Is that a young person said and not that you're not young. In relative terms said they had computers in 75  [00:01:35] Weird, eh?  [00:01:38] Tell me about Facebook still abusing my privacy. Are you telling me that Mark Zuckerberg wasn't completely honest with me. [00:01:50] Did you notice the Zuck said in an answer to a lot of the questions said Hey, I'll get back to you on that, and fact he did. Oh he did. He did. He sent them a document that was hundreds of pages long as I recall, and it got no press because of course by then the news cycle was over and people move on. [00:02:16] Yeah they move on then and they he said Yeah well we kind of do keep everything and everyone possibly that we possibly can, and that reminds me of Debbie Wasserman Schultz who is I.T. guy to you has just made it into the news have you guys talked about this one.  [00:02:35] I've talked about him but in family and everyone else but he seems like the mainstream media doesn't want to talk about him. [00:02:46] He just came out I guess this week that you know they were supposed to turn over a server for the FBI to finally examine as near as I can tell. They're saying the Russians hacked right the Russians hacked the DNC. If you look at the charges that are just brought against the Russians there's no mention of the fact that the Russians were trying to hijack the Republicans as well. Did you know that. Yes. It was completely left out of the indictment. Well it turns out now apparently this server that they were supposed to turn over, they were starting to look at it and then they checked the serial number. The server that was turned over for investigation was not the server because they gave them something else.  [00:03:32] Isn't that interesting. And didn't we learn that somebody. Took a whole bunch of information, off of that DNC server in question. And that the forensic folks figured out that the speed with which all of the data was downloaded indicated that it would have been impossible to do it remotely that somebody who had access to the DNC server put in a Zip drive and downloaded stuff. Now that says to me you well wait a minute. I don't think that was a Russian.  [00:04:19] Oh he goes it goes on and on. Anyway, that story is going to continue to give us all kinds of entertainment because this whole thing is just completely nuts. What happened what they let happen to do is back to Zuck. Yeah. So he did three months ago sit in front of Congress. He came up and said yeah we're going to have we're going to make it so everything's transparent. And you know maybe when you were thinking about transparent maybe he was thinking of it like looking through a window or maybe a camera lens. Because as it turned out the Zuck is using specialized facial recognition technology.  [00:05:01] That people just aren't aware of when you are on Facebook. Now. You know if you post a picture you can Tag someone in a way that you tagged me before I've tag you in pictures, of course.  [00:05:14] So, it was that's kind of cool and it brings pictures and things to peoples attention and you can find the people were when you were tagging people in those pictures did you realize that Facebook was using that to say oh let me see complete within this picture. [00:05:32] And simply those in that picture simply those in the other picture. Let's see which one do we think is Jim Polito via a process of elimination Facebook has apparently been very busy building facial recognition software to the point right now where if you post something and you go to tag someone some people have noticed that over on the site. Now Facebook or just people to say oh yeah well it tells you who it is. [00:06:06] It says even when they don't know I put up a picture and it says Do you want a tag Cathy Polito in this picture and I haven't tagged my wife in the picture.  [00:06:18] Well he is same as last time. Well. The poor thing for probably the best reason. [00:06:24] But it says Do you want to put up other people. And it says Do you want to tag them. And I'm thinking I didn't tell you who that is. Well Facebook Knows.  [00:06:36] Well the New York Times reported last week that more than a dozen different privacy and consumer groups and some government officials are arguing that the company's use of the facial recognition is once again now violating people's privacy because they did not remain appropriate user consent. So, it's scanning photos anything uploaded to their social network. Now what would think about this for a minute. It's kind of cool that you want to take Cathy this picture it makes life a little easier. But you take this to the next level. And now Facebook has the ability to identify you.  [00:07:16] Now, I don't know why this is but man, Minority Report we keep calling a great movie and enemy of the state. [00:07:24] Despite Tom Cruise it was a great movie. It really was.  [00:07:28] And you remember when he had somebody else's eyeballs and he walked by like by a sign and the sign now changed and offered him a special deal on what he had bought at the store before, right. Right. Guess what Facebook could do with this data  [00:07:45] Yeah they just walk into the place and it says that's Jim Polito. You know what Jim Polito likes such and such bourbon why don't we tell him it's on special.  [00:07:58] Yeah, Well and he likes that friends of burbon. So let's go ahead and let's get the competitor bourbon to advertise and pay us to promote to Jim Polito. [00:08:08] Yeah exactly. Exactly. You can live with some of that. Right.  [00:08:16] But, it might be good right because it knows you're trying to buy a car when you want to see the car.  [00:08:22] You can put some of that but there's a part of me that always makes the extra little leap and I always say to myself hey I'm never doing anything wrong. I'm never sure I shouldn't be I'm never doing things I shouldn't be doing I really I lead a nearly monastic life. So, I'm not worried about it. But, I always think to myself. But, do I really want people to know that much about where I am now worried about I'm worried about when a hacker gets that information or somebody else. Exactly right, because I think what can happen here.  [00:08:59] If Facebook sells this data or the nation's stolen or even as simple as doing Facebook's search for Jim Polito pictures and now we've got Apple next year all of their phones are going to have the facial recognition software right now. You can get it you can go to a local U.P.S. store and use their 3-D printer. So now I can make a 3D version of Jim's head. I know to unlock any door. OK. [00:09:27] You're going to need the extra large printer to do that one the one with the double double triple chin option that one Yeah exactly. Its scary the state is being collected in a lot of people don't know about it.  [00:09:43] Pay attention. Craig. This is great stuff and I could go on and on. Craig Peterson is a great guy who will provide this information to you. Plus other great information about the iPhone about Wal-Mart eavesdropping on workers. All of that you can get that information for free. He will not pester you. He will not try to sell you things. Here is what you do. Craig thanks so much, buddy. That was very informative always a pleasure. Thanks Jim. Take care. You too. Craig Peterson, everybody. Yeah I don't mind being recognized here and there. I just don't want it. [00:10:58] You know what I really don't care if Facebook has it at a certain point I just don't want a hacker to get it and then do something else with it. Go to any of the ubiquitous tech themed meet ups around town and you will most likely find Jim spreading the word.2017 was a year of growth and with growth comes many challenges. As Jim settles into his role as CEO of the OTA he has a lot on his plate. Tech has infiltrated every corner of our society and Orlando is being positioned as a major hub on a national scale. We continue to see growth in Gaming, Enterprise, Military and Medical Simulations and Jim has been tasked with finding a way to unite, promote and evangelize on behalf of all Central Florida Tech, AR, VR and Interactive Media. Herding cats is more like it. We caught up with Jim Mid January to find out what's in store for 2018 but more importantly what can we do to support the cause. There are many questions and even more opinions but as a wise man once said, "if you are not a part of the solution you are a part of the problem". You can start by getting involved. The OTA meets monthly and a schedule is posted on their Meetup page here. Thanks Jim for taking the time to meet with us and share your wisdom. On behalf of our community thanks for all of your hard work and dedication to helping make Orlando a top tier tech hub and something we can ll be really proud of. Today's Quote is from Jim Herbert Click Below to Listen to Today's Show "Remember, It's the 18th Hole." ~~ Jim Herbert I was reading one of the Best Advice I've Ever Received blogs on our internal Social Intranet that I became the Community Manager of in September. We ask our executive management team to share the best advice they've ever received with our internal community. I saw the one from our CEO, Jim Herbert, and I thought the quote was great, but the story, better. I asked Jim permission to share this on the show and he said yes, so I, of course am now sharing with you. Best advice I've ever received - Jim Herbert, CEO of First Republic Bank When I was young, I used to caddy at a nearby golf course.  One day I had the opportunity to caddy for an expert golfer who had a very big bag of clubs that seemed larger than my kid-sized frame. As we came to the 18th hole, I was very tired from carrying my golfer’s heavy bag of clubs. I was carrying out my duty as a caddy by holding the flag while my golfer took his final putt.  But at that moment, my exhaustion took over and I moved – the one thing a caddy must never do, especially on the final hole. Clearly distracted, the golfer stood up, looked at me and motioned to stand still. After he made his putt, he put his arm around me as we started walking back to the club house and said, “Kid, that was a big mistake.” As I began to apologize for moving, he let me know that I had not only made one big mistake, I made two. I looked back at him perplexed. I could only remember moving the flag. He begins to explain what happened, “First you moved the flag. Second you moved the flag on the 18th hole – that’s when I’m deciding how much to tip you!” I’ve never forgotten that moment and it still rings true to everything that I do today. The lesson that I never forget is to always see things through to the very end. When I’m thinking about how to act in the final minutes of whatever it is I'm working on, I always remind myself, “It’s the 18th hole.” Thanks Jim. That's a great quote to remember. It's amazing how much golf can teach you about life, business and goals. When things are almost done, when you have delivered your final product, your service, your attitude, "remember It's the 18th Hole". When your tip depends on it, how will you finish? What great advice and a great quote to hang on your wall. "Remember, It's the 18th Hole." Go Out Today, Play Hard, Work Hard, Remember At The End, "It's the 18th Hole!" ~~~~ I'd love to hear your thoughts on this. My entire first day of the Weekend with WOOD conference was spent with Jim Heavey in the finishing room. I learned so much about finishing I COULD KISS JIM!!! Jim taught 3 classes that day - the first was "Spray Finishing Made Simple", the second was "Choose and Use the Best Topcoat for Your Project" and the third was "Finishing Your Finish". Today's footage is all from the "Spray Finishing Made Simple" class. This was one that was very important to me as spray finishing is very intimidating. But after watching Jim and realizing it was far more simple than I ever thought I feel confident I can easily handle it. Thanks Jim!!! #5. Jim Carrier is a contributing editor for Cruising World magazine, and a fellow Allied Seabreeze owner! His boat, a yawl like Arcturus, is called Ranger. Jim sailed it across the Atlantic with ARC Europe several years back, and his experience with the boat on that long ocean passage convinced Andy & Mia to buy their Seabreeze. Andy and Jim discuss sailing the Seabreeze and Jim's career as a writer. He's done far more than just sailing journalism, writing newspaper columns, advocating for Civil Rights in Alabama and writing about Hurricane Katrina. Check him out on byliner.com - he's among an A-list of writers, including Jon Kraukauer, famous for 'Into the Wild' and 'Into Thin Air.' Thanks Jim!
