Since the basic cable debut of The Disney Channel in April 1983, the House of Mouse has used its family-oriented network to feature its best movie ideas that weren't quite ready for the silver screen. At first the films were released under the name “Disney Channel Premiere Films,” but since 1997, they have been released under the banner Disney Channel Original Movie – or DCOM – up until 2022, when Disney+ took up the mantle. Regardless of the term you use to describe these feature-length gems, they bring to the fore a feeling of intense nostalgia. Generations are defined by the DCOM movies of someone's particular childhood! As always, this led the Great Pop Culture Debate team to wonder...what is the Best Disney Channel Original Movie? Movies discussed: High School Musical, The Thirteenth Year, Twitches, Smart House, Zenon: Girl of the Future, Tru Confessions, Quints, Descendants, Cadet Kelly, Brink!, Teen Beach Movie, Halloweentown, The Cheetah Girls, Get a Clue, Zombies, Camp Rock. Join host Eric Rezsnyak and GPCD panelists Amma Marfo, Bob Erlenback, Joelle Boedecker, and Trey Radu-Blackburn as they discuss 16 of the most-popular Disney Channel Original Movies. YOU DON'T NEED TO GO TO AMITY ISLAND FOR A SHARK MASSACRE!! IN FACT, YOU DON'T EVEN NEED A SHARK!! It's easy to recognize a Jaws knock-off when it revolves around a shark eating people, but what about all of those movies without sharks that lift scenes and ideas from Steven Spielberg's film and Peter Benchley's novel? Well, around here we call those movies “Jaws, Minus the Shark” movies and they make up a surprisingly versatile and eclectic little subgenre, one full of Brodys, Quints, and inordinately sexy Hoopers. Join Gabe and Ann-Marie Taylor – returning to Genre Grinder for the first time since 2020's Bad Shark Movies episode – as we explore what defines a Jaws, Minus the Shark movie and look at four such films: Michael Anderson's Orca (aka: Orca: The Killer Whale, 1977), Lewis Teague's Alligator (1980), Dick Maas' The Lift (Dutch: De Lift, 1983), and Christophe Gans' Brotherhood of the Wolf (French: Le Pacte des loups, 2001). Note: There's something going on with my mic during this recording that makes me sound a little weird. Unfortunately, I didn't notice until I was editing. Apologies. 00:00 – Intro 10:48 – Orca (and the unfortunate truth of killer whales in captivity) 50:08 – Alligator 1:10:32 – The Lift 1:33:50 – Brotherhood of the Wolf 2:02:42 – Outro If you are in a position to make the world a better place, please consider the following fundraisers: Justice for Sonya Massey: https://www.gofundme.com/f/justice-for-sonya-massey Palestine Children's Relief Fund: https://pcrf1.app.neoncrm.com/forms/gaza-relief Anera Gaza Aid: https://www.anera.org/where-we-work/palestine/gaza/ Donations 4 Abortions (state by state abortion funds): https://donations4abortion.com/

We're finally back to whiskey, I promise! This is a classic episode - a distillery making single malt in the corn capital of the US. Don't worry, they make a damn good bourbon, too, but my first taste of Cedar Ridge was a single barrel of their single malt picked by Lost Lantern. I'm joined by head distiller and Scotch-lover Murphy Quint, who has led the distillery's operations except for a stint at Stranahan's. We chatted about adding a distillery onto a winery, making their whiskey stand out, and most importantly what the Quints want their legacy to be. _________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: The first WRP barrel pick is coming! Imagine being an only child when suddenly, your parents have quints, and your previously peaceful home life is shattered by five wild and wacky babies! That certainly sounds like a premise rich in comic potential, doesn't it? Well too bad, this is a DCOM, so instead we get Quints (2000), a movie that barely features the quints of the title, but instead focuses on their older sister Jamie Grover (Kimberly J. Brown), who is neither wacky, nor a baby. How will Jamie cope with no longer being the centre of her parents' world? Is getting into George Washington Science Magnet School truly where her heart lies? Can we actually see the quints, though, please? The answers to these questions, and more, await! Hello, Playdate Community! This week, Nick and Don take the week off to dig deep inside themselves emotionally, while Ryan is joined by Discord Leaderboard Hotshot, Nick F! SO MANY NICKS. They discuss protips and techniques for getting highscores on a variety of playdate hit games. SEASON ONE SPOILERS ABOUND. Feel free to chime in on the socials with your own protips! Thanks for listening. Join us here (most other weeks) as we examine all of the Season Pass games, as well as discussing news and indie finds from the Playdate community. NickF's *boopity-boop-boop* Tips and Techniques Notes WHITEWATER WIPEOUT (8:19) - Holding up immediately before leaving the wave lets you jump - You will see him shift closer to the back of the board - Holding left or right allow you to spin faster - Combos are created by landing at least the same amount of spins as the previous jump - However, can be maintained by switching between quads and trips. - It is worth losing the combo to land the jump cleanly - Forcing that extra rotation will either cause you to wipe out, or leave you with too little speed to continue the combo on the next jump anyways - Work to land triple 360s consistently before going for quads or quintuples - Muscle memory can be developed for number of crank rotations - Quints likely best used at the end of a run as waves run out (due to need for extreme lead-up and recovery). SNAK (24:24) - Faster game modes result in faster score buildup (for those with differing attention spans) - The game's framerate may slow down if too many apples are on screen (particularly when climbing up the snake's body) - The game's framerate WILL slow down when the snake's body gets too long - Helpful in faster levels! …But be mindful of adjusting your own (internal/perceived) rhythm of the game! - There is a split second before crashing/dying where the player still has a chance to turn the snake (a la PacMan Championship DX) - Playing with the volume on will help, as the audio will also pause - The jump mechanic has a distance of two rows/columns - The snake can turn when doubling back on itself - The snake does not need to retrace its exact path (can cross lanes) - The apples cannot climb on a section of the snake that has doubled back on itself (discussed in week 10 by Ryan) - Good way to stall them in place and pick them off - The 5-button thumb/circle/A motion is much easier to execute in Mirror HYPER METEOR (42:54) - Sometimes you can “spawn camp” an enemy to be in the white space before it begins to move - Mostly recommended for the larger meteors - Take advantages of invincibility frames after a death to clear an overlapping cluster of enemies - Increasing your combo is the primary method of increasing score - Prioritizing destroying all the meteors on screen will also leave behind a greater number of smaller chunks to maintain combo between enemy spawns - Leveling up is based on the playtime of the run, rather than amount of enemy kills or overall score - Practice hitting enemies head-on/point-first. Gives more control over hitbox, as entire ship is a hitbox - Take advantage of 180/360 degree turns to control momentum - Circle enemies in the direction opposite their rotation to line up their weak spot - Do not chase enemies, let them come to you INVENTORY HERO (01:01:32) - Against the Crowllector, use bombs as soon as possible - Subsequent rounds will require assembling more and more pieces of scrolls (halves, thirds, etc) - The Crowllector will destroy equipped gear almost immediately - Hold a full suit of armor on and - The spinning columns in the matching game stop one past the slot in which A is pressed - Discard all rabbits as soon as they are obtained - There is a slight delay before multiplication - Mushrooms will multiply in your inventory as well, albeit at a slower rate - Eat ones that restore health, discard ones that lose health - Armor typically disintegrates before weapons - Repair scrolls restore all equipped gear - Do not hoard healing potions; they will be forcibly replaced by newly obtained items NECROCRISIS (01:11:57) - Mirror helps to see screen more easily during frantic cranking - The enemy patterns are for the most part fixed (learn locations/spawns) - Take the chance to reload after a screen before the next begins - Enemies don't always aim/shoot in the order which they appear on screen - Place the cursor at a common height so you only need to move left and right - Tweak the sensitivity to your liking (I use 12) - PERSONAL PREFERENCE: using on Mirror gives you a bigger screen and eliminates the issue of screen shake Intro/Outro Music - Made with Boogie Loops on Playdate Contact: Hello Playdate on Discord Hello Playdate on Instagram Hello Playdate on Twitter Playdatepodcast.com Indie Game of the Week Collection on itch.io Helloplaydatepodcast (at) gmail dot com Voice Mail - 1-(724)-BINGOS-1 (1-724-246-4671) Our Previous Podcast, Gaming On Ten For Amusement Only Podcast, Nick's EM Bingo and Pinball Podcast Game and Cast, Ryan's Handheld Gaming Podcast Series Tags: video games, gaming, handheld, handhelds, panic, playdate, play, date, yellow, crank, gameboy, ds, pocket, videogames, nintendo, sega, xbox, playstation, sony, vita, psp, ngage, itch.io, Keita Takahashi, katamari

Taapsee has the tough task of playing someone who isn't very expressive. Mithali keeps to herself, she speaks softly with her face registering very little of what she actually feels. It's her eyes that do most of the talking and Taapsee Pannu nails it brilliantly never slipping out of character. But post interval, the film appears to have disowned its own characters, and for that matter, the audience. Why have voiceovers stating the obvious when you have an actor of the calibre of Taapsee who can convey so much with just a look? This sudden shift in the narrative tone is both inexplicable and unforgivable and Shabaash Mithu is poorer for it. It's a pity because Mithali's inspiring story and Taapsee's solid performance deserved better. Rating: 2.5 Quints out of 5.
The remake of Sailesh Kolanu‘s 2020 Telugu film by the same name, Hit: The First Case ends with the promise of a second film. But given the bewildering proceedings in this, one is already apprehensive about the next installment. For one, the dialogues by Girish Kohli lend the film an artificial hue. It's like two people speaking outlines rather than having a conversation that appears genuine. The dialogue and their delivery seem disjointed and never quite fit in. Plus, the editing is so patchy that it feels like a sledgehammer is at work to break up the scenes into bits. The intention might have been to use it as a stylistic device to add pace and urgency to the narrative, but it only manages to make it disjointed and confusing. A character is allowed just half a line or expression, and we cut to another frame without giving us any time to process. What do you think of Quint's versus Aerials without pumps and tanks? In many cities now, aerials with pumps, tanks and hose beds, instead of aerials without pumps, tanks and hose beds. Popularized by Quint Concepts and the city of St. Louis Mo., the ET guys will discuss this on the Tailboard. Apologies in advance for the audio on this recording, Paul was a bit far from the microphone his voice is rather quiet, which is rare for him. Enjoy and give us your thoughts about Quints!

It's not 1, it's not 2, it's not 3…. it's 5 babies! And no, it's not a horror movie, it's the DCOM classic Quints! A shorter episode this week as we talked about Quints, the DCOM about a family that has five babies. Definitely not about Robert Shaw's character from Jaws... as much as we might want it to be.

Lottie Davies was born in Guildford, UK, in 1971. She grew up in Surrey and was educated in Alton and Godalming. After a degree in philosophy at St Andrews University in Scotland, she moved back to England to pursue a career in photography. She is currently based in Cornwall in the south west of England.Lotties' unique style has been employed in a variety of contexts, including newspapers, glossy magazines, books and advertising. In recent years she has developed her practice to employ moving image, audio, text and interactive installation. This mixed media approach is crystallised in her long-term project Quinn (2014-2020). Her work has garnered international acclaim with the image Quints, which won First Prize at the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Awards 2008 at the National Portrait Gallery in London, with Viola As Twins, which won the Photographic Art Award, Arte Laguna Prize in Venice in 2011, and her collaboration on Dreams of Your Life with Hide & Seek/Film 4.0 which was BAFTA-nominated in 2012.Lottie's work is concerned with stories and personal histories, the tales and myths we use to structure our lives. She takes inspiration from classical and modern painting, cinema and theatre as well as the imaginary worlds of literature. She employs a deliberate reworking of our visual vocabulary, playing on our notions of nostalgia and visual conventions with the intention of evoking a sense of recognition and narrative. Sandy Nairne, former director of the National Portrait Gallery in London, described Davies' work as “brilliantly imaginative”.On episode 156, Lottie discusses, among other things:Her relocation from London to Cornwallcurrent project, QuinnWhy she sets her work in the pastThe benefits of using an actor to represent her character, QuinnHow to acquire a baby for a shootWhy her mother was born in a bucketOn photographers not being considered artistsHer column for Professional Photographer‘Photobook Fails'The six phases of the creative processThe Empathy Museum portraitsMemories and NightmaresReferenced:Laura NobleSamuel J WeirForest School CampsMatt HarrisGordon MacDonaldCraig EastonDean PavittPaul SamsonGary Rhodes Website | Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | Mutton Row Books“‘It's not painting is it? Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello! In many ways, this episode is quite different from what I’m sure anyone could have expected. Not only is it not about the movie we originally announced for this month, but we found ourselves doing a far more in-depth analysis of a movie’s emotion and themes than we usually do for a DCOM. To our credit, however, this is seemingly simple story about a bunch of babies changing peoples lives has more to it than you would think. It’s about things like art, family, and passion…but definitely still has plenty of jokes about babies pooping and peeing a lot so don’t worry yourself.Lucas doesn’t understand babies and gets possessed. Emma changes her mind about meatloaf and hates unreliable narration.Austin dives deep into the each layer the film hides.Talking Points: KJB Kills It Every Time, A Litany of Weird Bits, The Time of Octomom, Don Knotts in the Mix, The Dark Realities of These Parents, The World According to Jamie, Big Meme Energy, What’s Going On With Brad?, Lying For No Reason, MR. As if discussing the typical Disney Channel movie wasn't twisted enough, we're talking about the movie Quints from 2000. Before we get to discussing this trip of a movie, we discuss some Disney+ News, which we have quite a lot of, actually. We discuss two shows eventually arriving to the platform, a new exclusive movie, and also an exclusive Marvel documentary. Then, when we actually start discussing Quints, we bring up some of the movies interesting decisions, the moments that made us frustrated, and come up with many alternate solutions on how to solve this film's issues (though most of them are not delivered seriously). Blake advertises Mountain Dew's new flavor (#notsponsored #wouldbesponsored), Hayden's struggling with AT&T, and Wiese's hyped about one of the show's coming to Disney+. Click here to look at our ENTIRE Disney+ Catalog Ranking List, and figure out what we think (based on our rating averages) is the best item we've reviewed so far, and the worst!
Hey Dialers! (Are we making that a thing now? Sure.) This week, Kellie and Katharine talk about Quints! It’s a movie about a pathological liar whose parents have five babies, or something. Basically it’s the non-Christmas version of last year’s Ultimate Christmas Present episode, which means they avoid talking about the actual movie AT ALL COSTS. Plus, Kellie’s silent husband makes his first ever on-air sound because he’s a real person and definitely not a figment of her imagination, OKAY?X
