In May of 1895, on the old San Francisco waterfront, four sailors signed onto the four-masted barkentine Arago for a voyage to Valparaiso, Chile (“and thence to such other foreign ports as the master might direct, and thence to return to the United States”) via Astoria. By the time they got to Astoria, the four of them had had enough of conditions on the Arago. They stepped off the ship and essentially told the skipper, “We quit.” In doing so, they changed history — and the legal status of sailors would never be the same. The crew is back and covering everything from government shutdown rumors to backlash about the bump serum. Damo gives his two-week review of Charles Johnson's “The Bump Serum,” and the team unveils their “Don't Come to the All Hands” lists. The hosts catch up on life since the last episode and recognize Veterans Day before diving into the latest news on USS Nimitz and the questions surrounding extended deployments—including whether Sailors should get liberty back after standing holiday duty. They discuss the sudden retirement of another 3-Star General, the rumor that 168 commissaries may be closing, and Damo introduces a new segment: “Win for the Week.” The guys also react to the passing of former Vice President Dick Cheney, debate whether MCPON Honea received his due flowers, and unpack retired FLTCM Paul Kingsbury's launch of the National Chief Petty Officer Association. Other topics include counseling Sailors over social media conduct, Damon's Hero of the Week—Staff Sergeant Jared C. Monti, Aaron's perspective on Warrior Ethos, and celebrating five years of Permission to Speak Freely. Damo shows love for Damon and Aaron's picks in the No Limit vs. Cash Money Verzuz, reflects on a couple of movies he watched, and reacts to someone asking whether he uses ChatGPT. In Round 96 of the Tactical Transition Tips on the Transition Drill Podcast, transitioning out of the military or leaving a career in law enforcement, firefighting, or EMS is not just a career change, it is a full identity shift. The uniform eventually comes off, the radio stops, the structure quiets, and suddenly your success depends not only on your experience, but on who is willing to speak your name when you are not in the room. In this episode go beyond mentorship and reveal a critical truth for every military veteran and first responder preparing for life after service: you do not rise in the civilian world on experience alone, you rise when someone with influence advocates for you. This episode focuses on the strategic move from collecting mentors to creating advocates, people who put their reputation on the line to open doors for your next chapter. Military veterans, police officers, firefighters, and EMS professionals already understand leadership, discipline, and responsibility. What often gets missed during transition is learning how to build relationships with decision-makers who can champion your potential in the civilian arena. That is the skill we train today. We break down this mission across all three transition timelines:Close Range Group (transition within a year): Turn one mentor into a formal advocate, and one sentence explanation: You will prepare for civilian hiring by directly asking a key contact to serve as a formal reference and equipping them with your resume and target job description so they can speak confidently on your behalf.Medium Range Group (transition in roughly five years): Define three sponsor actions, and one sentence explanation: You will identify three specific ways a future advocate can assist you such as introductions, developmental opportunities, or executive visibility so support becomes actionable not vague.Long Range Group (transition in a decade or more): Build early relationships with leaders who have real influence, and one sentence explanation: You will invest in authentic long-term relationships with proven decision-makers who may later become advocates once they have seen your consistency, character, and performance over time.Whether you are a Soldier, Marine, Sailor, Airmen, police officer, firefighter, paramedic, or anyone preparing for a military transition or first responder transition, this episode strengthens your approach to building meaningful professional relationships that secure real opportunity in your next mission. The best podcast for military veterans, police officers, firefighters, and first responders preparing for veteran transition and life after service. As I was prepping these episode notes, I got a call about a matter concerning my Sailors that I needed to address. With that said, enjoy these ChatGPT-generated notes and enjoy this episode. You'll see very early in the episode that we put our hearts into it. - Damo   Episode Description:   This episode kicks off with weather talk and Halloween banter before shifting into reflection as Damo asks, “When's the last time you were let down?” The conversation evolves into leadership mode as he introduces The Vibe Check—a new way to bridge influencers and skeptics across the command. From there, Damo and Damon explore what it means to “zero out at the pursuit of excellence,” setting the tone for an unfiltered discussion on accountability and consistency. The guys dive deep into the RSCA evaluation system and question whether it rewards authenticity or compliance. Damon reminds listeners that leadership happens at your pace, not at the world's. The conversation then pivots to Sailor 360, execution mistakes, and how leaders can avoid burnout by doing the basics well. In this week's Do Better segment, the focus is on poor meetings and the people who just “know they wrong.” Damo and Damon also unpack the viral DoorDash story and tie it to accountability in and out of uniform. The episode closes with a look at the Barracks Task Force, why leaders are afraid to lead in the IG era, and how to professionally address both seniors and subordinates when they make mistakes. Damon and Damo break down the latest NAVADMIN, and Damo closes with his Pick of the Week—Tim Grover's Relentless—a book that ties every message together: discipline, mentality, and excellence. Deep in an Australian rainforest, surrounded by birds older than any cathedral, We unpack one of the greatest mysteries in human history, how the first people to sail across open seas, 60,000 years ago, became a civilisation that forgot how to sail. The Aboriginal Australians, the oldest continuous culture on Earth, arrived when Europe was still under ice. They built languages older than Latin, mapped deserts the size of continents, and thrived for 99.7% of Australia's human history before a single European set foot here. Then, in just decades, 90% of them were gone, wiped out not by conquest, but by microbes. From this collision of worlds, we explore what makes societies innovate, why isolation freezes progress while connection multiplies it. Drawing on Harvard anthropologist Joseph Henrich's idea of the collective brain, they trace how collaboration fuels invention, from the first tools to AI. The episode arcs from the Aboriginal sailors who crossed 100 miles of open water before anyone else, to the Nobel Prize winners studying the alchemy of innovation, and ends with Ireland's own late awakening from creative isolation. Some stories rise from the sea and never quite settle again. The Charles Haskell was a New England schooner, built to survive the brutal waters of the North Atlantic. But after a terrible storm on George's Bank in 1869, she gained a reputation no ship would ever want.Sailors claimed that in the years that followed, the dead returned — climbing from the sea to finish the work they'd started in life. More than a century later, her story is still told along our coastlines — from Massachusetts to Nova Scotia, and right here in Newfoundland. It's been told as a legend, a ghost story, and even a folk song. But the line between fact and folklore remains as foggy as the Banks themselves. So pour a cup of tea, turn down the lights, and listen close as we climb aboard the Charles Haskell — the schooner that couldn't quite leave her ghosts behind.Episode page: The Ghostly Fishermen

This episode starts with the epitome of locker room talk, as Damo questions whether his latest decision at the gym means he's getting old. Damon recaps his experience listening to Episode 163, and the guys catch up on their weeks. Admiral Alvin Holsey recently announced his retirement in a story that swept across military social media circles. A recent dispute between Marc Lamont Hill and Queenzflip of the Joe Budden Podcast leads to a conversation about who “should” and “shouldn't” be in certain spaces. Damo responds to a comment regarding understanding our roles as leaders, which morphs into a discussion about emotional intelligence and old-school terms that are now considered offensive. The guys say their last goodbyes to R&B pioneer and legend D'Angelo. Aaron highlights Sergeant Major Janina Simmons as our Hero of the Week, and Damon reviews the movie One Battle After Another. The furlough is still underway—when will it end, and how is it affecting the working-class citizen? Charles Johnson, creator of The Bump Serum, stops by to talk about pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB), how smarter grooming solutions can keep Sailors in regs without wrecking their skin, and why his product may be the solution we've been missing. Later in the episode, the guys discuss how to decompress when you're at a demanding command. No Limit vs. Cash Money Records in a Verzuz—who you got? Damon and Aaron exchange their Picks of the Week, and the guys share their Do Better topics for the week, with Damon remembering Kyren Lacy. About Our Guest — Courtney A. Barber   Courtney A. Barber is a retired U.S. Navy Master Chief Petty Officer, motivational speaker, three-time published author, and certified life purpose coach with over 25 years of military leadership experience. A Fayetteville, North Carolina native, Courtney is the founder of Sapphire Veteran HR, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping women veterans in Hampton Roads transition from service to civilian life with confidence and community. After a decorated Navy career, Courtney transformed her journey of adversity, faith, and resilience into a personal mission to empower others through her brand, Unapologetically Favored—a movement and mindset that encourages people to walk boldly in their truth. She has authored multiple books including Unapologetically Favored, Wake Up. Turn Up. Bless Up., and Never Be Afraid to Eat Alone, each blending leadership, spirituality, and personal growth. In December 2023, she served as part of the MyNavy Coaching Team, leading a five-day Coaching Master Course in San Diego to develop the next generation of Navy leaders. Today, Courtney continues to mentor, teach, and inspire through her speaking engagements, coaching programs, and advocacy for authenticity, representation, and emotional intelligence in leadership. Learn more about her work at UnapologeticallyFavored.net or follow her on social media at @unapologeticallyfavored.   About This Episode:   In this episode, Damo and Aaron sit down with retired Master Chief and author Courtney Barber—North Carolina native and writer of Unapologetically Favored—for a raw, funny, and deeply human conversation about faith, identity, leadership, and redemption inside the U.S. Navy. The guys open with barbershop energy, debating Dave Chappelle vs. Eddie Murphy, fresh off Damo catching Chappelle live, before pivoting into Courtney's early life in the South, her family dynamics, and how her upbringing shaped the way she learned to love, trust, and lead. She opens up about her father figures, teenage pregnancy, abortion, and the boundaries she had to build to protect her peace. Courtney reflects on her early Navy journey—boot camp, A-school, and those unforgettable early days in uniform—sharing stories of laughter, adversity, and lessons learned. Aaron delivers a hilarious breakdown of “honch monsters,” and the crew swaps memories of Great Lakes and the RDC grind. Courtney discusses the mentors who taught her the value of training your reliefs, the importance of accountability, and what ultimately inspired her to write Unapologetically Favored after a viral post questioning empty “thank-you for your service” gestures. Listener questions about leadership spark a powerful exchange on the role of First Class Petty Officers and why leaders must trust their people enough to let them lead, fail, and grow. From being married against her nature and struggling with instinct to finally embracing her truth and telling her mom, Courtney walks listeners through the courage it took to live authentically under Don't Ask, Don't Tell. She shares the impact of good mentorship, the value of grace after mistakes, and how faith and resilience helped her rise through adversity. Damo introduces the idea of giving Sailors “scarlet letters” for their failures, which leads to a discussion about forgiveness, perception, and leadership growth. Courtney also reflects on what she learned from a failed BCA. It's three hours of honesty, humor, and hard-earned wisdom—laughter, confession, mentorship, and faith woven into one conversation. From barbershop debates to leadership lessons to spiritual redemption, this episode captures everything Permission to Speak Freely stands for: real people, real leadership, and real conversations that matter.       Do you have a “Do Better” that you want us to review on a future episode? Navigating around Christopher Columbus: The Nine Lives of the Genoese Sailor Who Became History's Greatest Saint and Sinner

Next Monday is Columbus Day. Or should it be Indigenous People's Day? According to the historian Matthew Restall we should be celebrating both Columbus and Indigenous People on Monday. The author of the timely The Nine Lives of Christopher Columbus, Restall places Genoa's most famous sailor as a prisoner of history - endlessly protean to reflect each era's changing values. The many lives of Columbus, then, is a mirror of how we have thought differently about him over the last 500 years. As history's greatest saint and sinner, Christopher Columbus might be the ultimate Rorschach test. Tell me what you'll be celebrating next Monday and I'll tell you who you are. Happy hols!1. Columbus Was a “Manic Narcissist” Who Believed He Was God's Agent Restall discovered Columbus wasn't likable—he descended into believing he was divinely chosen and could even be found in the Old Testament. This grandiosity was partly his undoing as a colonial administrator.2. Columbus Failed as a Colonizer and Administrator Unlike the conquistadors who came after him, Columbus lacked political and diplomatic skills. He was “just a sailor”—son of a weaver, grandson of a cheesemaker—and Spanish authorities quickly sidelined him. He died in 1506, only 13 years after his first voyage, with a declining reputation.3. The Columbus Day Debate Is About Different Columbuses Italian-Americans defend a 19th/20th century “Italian-American Columbus”—a symbol of immigrant achievement—while Indigenous Peoples' Day supporters condemn the “historic Columbus” who began a colonization process that killed 70-90% of indigenous populations within a century. These groups are talking past each other about entirely different figures.4. Conquistadors Were “Armed Entrepreneurs” Running Investment Companies Spanish conquistadors functioned like venture capital firms—assembling ships, soldiers, and supplies as investments, seeking returns through plunder and enslaved people, then winning authority positions to generate more profit while paying a 20% tax to the crown.5. Columbus's One Success: Founding a Noble Dynasty That Still Exists Despite his failures, Columbus achieved his main ambition—establishing an aristocratic dynasty. The title “Admiral of the Ocean Sea” granted in 1493 is still held today by the 20th admiral, a Spanish naval officer and businessman named Don Cristóbal Colón.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. I feel like I see more acutely than ever into the backing track of human experience. There is the "outside" of how our lives are going within givens and events, but then there is the "backing track" -- the enabling part, the staying part, the... well, the (kind of) Eternal Part. The two parts, the outside and the backing track, are separate. "Phosphorus" is a word one sometimes uses for this, but listening to an old Beach Boys song from 1973 brought it home so beautifully. You hear a number of "stanzas", and then (at least twice, maybe three times) a keyboard-driven bridge -- a melody that puts you right through the roof emotionally. It summons almost automatically the mood you'd want to have surrounding you when you are dying. Moreover, the voiced imperative at the end, "Sail on, sail on, sailor", is exactly what I need. I don't need someone to help me find 'new purpose', something to plant me in the now again, when my spirits are low. I need, as Meister Eckhart wrote in 1312, to experience the following: "If you are looking for God, go back to where you lost Him." To put that in slightly more horizontal terms -- tho' even its horizontal transcription is really Vertical -- "If you are looking for who you are meant to be, go back to where you really were yourself". Incidentally, that was probably not in connection with your career or your cause. It was more likely in connection with a certain someone. People sometimes think I'm overdoing it when I underline the centrality of romantic connection in life. I don't believe I am. The main reason one underlines that dimension is, well, ... popular music. It's not news to anyone reading this, that 97.5% of all rock songs, from the very beginning (i.e., Elvis and Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry and Link Wray and Joe Meek), concern romantic love. Not 65% or even 85%, but 97.5%. Think about that. I mean, really, let that sink in. Anyway, if you want to find God (i.e., your way forward, as opposed to your way backward -- to inertia, bitterness, and cascading negativity as the years go on), go back to... the song you remember from that time you first came out of yourself. Whether the person you were with when you first heard that song is alive or dead, present or out there (Moody Blues, 1988), that moment is eternal. It is still present. It is still your empirical guide to... the New You. Podcast 406 is dedicated to Sam Everette.
