Be smaller. Be lighter. For our entire lives those messages have been drilled into us from every angle, including very often from those in our sports. We hear we need to be at “race weight.” We're shown “idealized” images of what female athletes “should” look like. It's all incredibly damaging, especially as we hit menopause and midlife and our bodies start to change. It's also based on BS. Women with cellulite and extra body fat win races. Women who are well-fueled outperform those who are not. There is no one magic number on the scale or body fat percentage that makes us a success. All the destructive messages that make us hate our bodies feed the diet culture machine. This week we sat down with coach and sports dietitian Marni Sumbal to dismantle that machine and help us find body peace, so we don't spend the next chapters of our lives in an endless war with ourselves. Jason Williams is the Senior Sports Scientist in the Human Performance division at Specialized and a bike fitter at Retul, a Specialized brand that's focused on delivering technically advanced bike fitting and product matching technology. Pat Casey is a USA Triathlon Level 2 Coach, CSCS, Team USA Age Group Coach, and Retul certified bike fit expert. His background as an elite road cyclist stemmed into his consulting and coaching career, which allows him to combine his love of cycling and triathlon with his devotion to helping people improve their quality of life, and realize their athletic potential through endurance sports. Pat grew up in St. Louis, Missouri where he spent the months he wasn't playing ice hockey riding his mountain bike. He was introduced to cross country racing and joined the St. Louis-based cycling team when he was 15. At this time, Pat also got a job as an aspiring bike mechanic, and to this day, still wears his “mechanic hat” after 13 years in bike shops. During summer of 2012, Pat rode his bike from San Francisco, CA to Boston, MA in support of Partners in Health, a Global Health organization that had largely inspired his move to Alabama after graduation. Getting back to racing in Alabama, Pat found himself on the podium and moved up in Category quickly with help from his coach at the time, Heather. Instead of continuing on his path towards graduate school, Pat wanted to see where his dream of professional bike racing would take him. In 2014, Pat and Heather loaded up and moved their lives to Park City, Utah and Pat joined the Canyon Bicycles-Shimano Domestic Elite Cycling Team. He spent the following spring and summer months (2015 and 2016) traveling the US on the domestic PRT (Professional Road Tour) Circuit, followed by a year with the New Orleans-based team, Palmer Cycling who would help get him to a myriad of PRT events in the role of Rider and Director for the small squad. In this role, Pat found himself more useful as a team leader and coach than as a rider. In 2018, racing has become an outlet for competition, but Pat's passion for coaching and devotion to his athletes has outdistanced his desire to spend as much time on the road. TIMONIUM, Md. — Five years ago, Becca Meyers was on the floor of her room in the Olympic Village at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympics, balled up and sobbing, frustrated and terrified. She had stopped eating because she couldn't find the athletes' dining area. Even after her parents rescued her and pumped her full of calories and confidence in time for her to win three gold medals and a silver for Team USA, she made a promise to herself: She would never put herself through such a nightmare again. On Sunday evening, roughly five weeks before the start of the Tokyo Paralympics, Meyers, a deaf-blind swimmer with a chance to medal in four events, pulled the plug on her Olympic dream — most likely forever. With a click, she sent an email informing U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee officials of her decision to withdraw from Team USA. Gwen Jorgensen is Leaving Bowerman Track Club After four years at the Nike-sponsored club coached by Jerry Schumacher, Gwen Jorgensen announced today that she's leaving Bowerman Track Club to be coached by Bobby McGee, who she has worked with in the past. In a video uploaded to her YouTube channel, Jorgensen explained that a mix of career and family goals led to this decision. “I've had two marathons that just haven't proven I can do it,” she said. “I want to just have a marathon, that's like, OK, I can run this.” She and her husband, Patrick Lemieux, are also looking for a new place to live and are considering having more children. Jorgensen won the Olympic gold at the Rio Games in 2016 in triathlon, and announced a year later she would shift to running, with a focus on medaling in the marathon. Due to extended recovery after heel surgery to repair Haglund's deformity in May 2019, she didn't end up competing in the Olympic marathon trials last year—in early 2020, she decided to focus on the track. “My goals in the marathon aren't changing. Mike Greer, who dedicated his life to triathlon and the multisport community, passed away at 82 on July 21. His service to the sport spanned nearly four decades and encompassed every facet of the industry. The Funeral service is planned for Monday, July 26 at 1 p.m. CT in Lubbock, Texas at the Sanders Funeral Home. Mike competed in over 400 triathlons across every distance and continued to excel as an age-group athlete into his 80s, created and served as the race director of Buffalo Springs Lake 70.3 at Lubbock, Texas, for the past 30-plus years, held the position of both Interim Executive Director and President of the Board of Directors of USA Triathlon, and created the swim-bike discipline of aquabike, among other accomplishments and contributions. TIMONIUM, Md. — Five years ago, Becca Meyers was on the floor of her room in the Olympic Village at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympics, balled up and sobbing, frustrated and terrified. She had stopped eating because she couldn't find the athletes' dining area. Even after her parents rescued her and pumped her full of calories and confidence in time for her to win three gold medals and a silver for Team USA, she made a promise to herself: She would never put herself through such a nightmare again. On Sunday evening, roughly five weeks before the start of the Tokyo Paralympics, Meyers, a deaf-blind swimmer with a chance to medal in four events, pulled the plug on her Olympic dream — most likely forever. With a click, she sent an email informing U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee officials of her decision to withdraw from Team USA. Gwen Jorgensen is Leaving Bowerman Track Club After four years at the Nike-sponsored club coached by Jerry Schumacher, Gwen Jorgensen announced today that she's leaving Bowerman Track Club to be coached by Bobby McGee, who she has worked with in the past. In a video uploaded to her YouTube channel, Jorgensen explained that a mix of career and family goals led to this decision. “I've had two marathons that just haven't proven I can do it,” she said. “I want to just have a marathon, that's like, OK, I can run this.” She and her husband, Patrick Lemieux, are also looking for a new place to live and are considering having more children. Jorgensen won the Olympic gold at the Rio Games in 2016 in triathlon, and announced a year later she would shift to running, with a focus on medaling in the marathon. Due to extended recovery after heel surgery to repair Haglund's deformity in May 2019, she didn't end up competing in the Olympic marathon trials last year—in early 2020, she decided to focus on the track. “My goals in the marathon aren't changing. I have a couple few friends in my neighborhood who I have been training and racing with for more than a decade. Two in particular, Todd Stockford and Tom Beal. I never have to remind myself to look up the All American rankings, because the moment that the All American list is announced, I get a group text with my neighbor's standings and scores. When my friends and I carpool to races, we talk about the scores and which races someone qualified for Nationals. We'll talk about where Nationals or Worlds is going to be this year or the next. It gives our racing context and purpose. But there have been things that have been a bit of a mystery to me. Things like how did USAT come up with the decimal score they assigned me during a race? I've generally understood that the people that show up to a race can influence the score that I get, but how? I have an athlete, Amy Miller, who has qualified for Nationals and is very much in capable of achieving All American and Team USA, and I wanted to get the facts for her. Topics: USAT Ranking System Converting a race time into decimal format: From Nick - we change participants’ times into minutes using a mathematical formula Example 1: a time of 00:49:30.0 would change to 49.5) Example 2: a time of 02:11:08.0 would change to 131.133 – 2x60(hours into minutes) + 11 minutes + 8/60(seconds into minutes) Any time over one hour will take the number of hours and turn that into minutes. Two hours equates to 120 and three hours will equate to 180. This is why the above example has a decimal time of 131.133. 2 hours into minutes - 120 + the 11 additional minutes. and then changing seconds into minutes as well. How are Race Scores Calculated? Our ranking system uses pacesetters to determine a par time for each race. Every race has a unique par time, depending on who has competed. It is important to understand the basic concept behind the ranking scores: scores are calculated as a comparison between an athlete’s race time and the projected time of the best age group athlete in the country (par time). For example, if the par time of a sprint race is 60 minutes, someone who completed the race in 72 minutes would be 20% slower than the best age group athlete, calculated as 1.2 times the par time. However, we do not know who the best age group athlete in the country is – so we estimate his/her performance by creating a Par Time. It would have been possible to give out ranking scores based on these numbers, where the lowest score is best; a score of 1.0 being the best score and all other scores going up from there. This way, it would be easy to see how each athlete’s times compare to the times of others. However, in most sports the higher scores reflect a better performance. It was decided to take the inverse of this number (1/1.2 for this example giving .833333) to achieve this goal. Fractions of “1” are not sufficient, so this number is multiplied by 100 (giving our example athlete a score of 83.3333). There are six steps used to determine race scores: Find all possible pacesetters: Determine which participants received an overall score in the previous year. These participants are considered “pacesetters” in this event. (Note: pacesetters are not athletes who competed in the race the previous year as well as this year. Pacesetters are any athlete who received an overall score based on any three on-road triathlons (2 or more races of any other sport) from the previous year. An overall score tells us what type of performances the athlete generally puts in. Convert minutes into decimal format: We change participants’ times into minutes so they can work in the mathematical formula (example: a time of 00:49:30.0 would change to 49.5) (example: a time of 02:11:08.0 would change to 131.133 – 2x60(hours into minutes) + 11 minutes + 8/60(seconds into minutes) Find each pacesetter’s calculated time: This is done by multiplying each participant’s time in minutes by their pacesetter score (final score from previous year) then dividing that by 100 (this removes a certain percentage of their time). This tells us how quickly an athlete that is ranked at a 100 could have completed the course. Remove top and bottom 20% of calculated times: Drop the top 20% & bottom 20% of calculated times. This removes any extraordinarily great performances (a pacesetter significantly outperforms their previous year pacesetter ranking) and extraordinarily poor performances (causes could be a flat tire or dehydration for example). Determine Par Time: Average the remaining 60% of calculated times to come up with the “par time.” We are interested in the “par time” as this is what all of the participants’ times will be compared to when calculating their individual rankings. Competitors are actually racing against the “par time” as far as scoring is concerned. Determine each participant’s race score: Divide each participant’s (decimal) finish time by the par time, invert and multiply by 100. (For example: assume a participant had a finish time of 49.5 and Par Time was set at 45 minutes Original Score: 49.5/45 = 1.1 Inverted Score: 1/1.1 = .909090 Race Score: .909090*100 = 90.9090 Races with 2, 3, and 4 pacesetters, do not have any pacesetters removed from the par time calculation. It is not until you reach 5 pacesetters that we will begin to remove the top and bottom 20%. We do not want to remove pacesetters when there are too few and we can't get a grasp on their performances by removing them. 8.For women, they then get a gender graded adjustment of 10%. Cliff Simms was a medical device engineer who had come up with a prototype of the 3-D bike fit system and Todd Carver was a bike racer and bike fit expert who knew how to apply the technology to help cyclists get the most out of their body and bike performance. Franko Vatterott was the third partner who was selling high altitude tents at the time, but knew how to market and sell the ground breaking 3-D fit technology. Their business plan intended to bring the system to market, make it the most in-demand and respected bike fitting system, and then eventually sell it to a major bicycle company. A Case for Zone 1 - by Laura Marcoux https://d3multisport.com/d3-university/article/a-case-for-zone-1 Based on article in the International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance Purpose: To describe training loads during an Ironman training program based on intensity zones and observe training–performance relationships. Methods: Nine triathletes completed a program with the same periodization model aiming at participation in the same Ironman event. Before and during the study, subjects performed ramp-protocol tests, running, and cycling to determine aerobic (AeT) and anaerobic thresholds (AnT) through gas-exchange analysis. For swimming, subjects performed a graded lactate test to determine AeT and AnT. Training was subsequently controlled by heart rate (HR) during each training session over 18 wk. Training and the competition were both quantified based on the cumulative time spent in 3 intensity zones: zone 1 (low intensity; AnT). Results: Most of training time was spent in zone 1 (68% ± 14%), whereas the Ironman competition was primarily performed in zone 2 (59% ± 22%). Significant inverse correlations were found between both total training time and training time in zone 1 vs performance time in competition (r = –.69 and –.92, respectively). In contrast, there was a moderate positive correlation between total training time in zone 2 and performance time in competition (r = .53) and a strong positive correlation between percentage of total training time in zone 2 and performance time in competition (r = .94). Conclusions: While athletes perform with HR mainly in zone 2, better performances are associated with more training time spent in zone 1. A high amount of cycling training in zone 2 may contribute to poorer overall performance. The Tour de France began as a marketing gimmick by Henri Desgrange who was editor of a sports newspaper called L'Auto which was targeted to French auto racing enthusiasts. He started to cover cycling and in 1902 an employee suggested a stage bicycle race around France. The first tour was 2400 kilometers to be covered in six stages. It was less intended as an athletic contest as it was an experiment in human endurance limits. Desgrenge promised the steepest mountains, the darkest nights, the most violent winds, the most difficult routes. In that inaugural year, 60 riders started the Tour and 21 finished. Origin of the name Haute Route, (or the High Route or Mountaineers' Route) is the name given to a route (with several variations) undertaken on foot or by ski touring between Chamonix in France and Zermatt in Switzerland. The Haute Route’s objective is to deliver an unparalleled 'professional' experience for amateur cyclists. This means not only delivering first class hospitality and event management, but all the key ingredients that make up the culture and experience of professional road racing. Hundreds of riders every year from all over the world take part in the Haute Route events, and take on the most mythical passes and roads in all of cycling. The attraction of these legendary cols, such as the Ventoux, Alpe d’Huez, Galibier, Tourmalet, Stelvio and Independence Pass cannot be underestimated, but beyond the sporting challenge is another story, a human story that for many is life changing. We met Sarah in Kona and enjoyed her energy and spirit. We saw her come out of the swim with the first group of female pros. Later we saw her come into T2 with the first few riders. Later still we saw her run her way up to 3rd place going into the energy lab. We were stoked thinking we were going to have an American on the podium this year. All due respect to Switzerland, UK, and Germany - love you guys - USA is due. On the media stand we got the news that Ann Haug had pulled into 3rd place. Sarah held onto 4th. We had all sorts of questions. Did she go out on the run too fast? How was her nutrition? How was the heat affecting her? About two weeks ago, an article came out from USAT about Sarah "Breaking the Stigma about Mental Health". We read the article, but we had a ton of questions. What is her experience in her own words? How common is depression and anxiety? How do athlete's experience it? What are it's causes? How do women and men deal with it? What are Sarah's recommendations for those dealing with depression? We want to ask all of these things of our guest. Finally, we teased a video mid-week of Sarah at the 2012 London Olympics. Note that she had not yet married Ben True at this point, so she was racing under her maiden name Sarah Groff. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, in any given year, an estimated 16.2 million adults in the U.S. experience a major depressive episode. And an estimated 40 million adults live with anxiety disorders. Sarah True’s tips for dealing with depression as an athlete Seek professional help: People who love you, they want to help, but they don’t have the skills to do so. That is too much pressure on my husband (professional runner Ben True). Talk to a therapist. Back off the training: If you’re physically exhausted from overtraining, your capacity to absorb stressors is limited. Adjust your race and training schedule. But, staying active is important: Because of the hormonal and chemical response to enhance your mood. Find that balance. Communicate with your coach: A good coach will never judge you or use your mental health against you. Reach out for help: I let people close to me know how bad my depression was. This was incredibly hard to verbalize, but once I did, talking about it started to help. Give yourself time: I knew because I’d been through periods in the past, that it was just a matter of time. Listener question: Janyne Kizer wrote in: What would be really cool is if the software imported the weather for the time/location of our workout. That way both athlete and coach could see that it was 1000% humidity and that's why the heart rate was so high, etc. In the interview Jim had explained that you can enable the calendar view to display the weather for the day on the calendar where the athlete trains. It actually uses the lat/long of the gps files that are being uploaded. On the calendar it shows the day's high, low and humidity I confirmed with Jayne that she was asking for the temperature and humidity at the time of the workout. We took that question to Benji Marshall of Today'sPlan and he wrote back: We show the temperature at the time of the activity in the bottom left when you open the activity. You can also add the avg, min and max temp in various areas of the platform that you can configure. This is the temperature that is recorded by the head unit at the time of the activity so is prone to being a little off as the head units can record some erroneous data in this regards but generally is quite good. See some screenshots below. As for humidity I have put in a ticket to have this included as a field in the field select areas of the platform so it too can be added to the view by the user. Jim Vance Debrief: One of the Today'sPlan features that Jim Vance described are the RPE of the workout and Subjective Wellness ratings the athlete can provide on a daily basis. As a coach we can look at all the power files, paces and heart rate levels in a workout and not have insight into how the athlete experienced their workout, their day, and what might be going on that contributed to the power, heart rate and pace. At a glance, looking at the workout in the calendar I can see the RPE. With one click, I can see the Session Rating recorded by the athlete, the duration rating by the athlete and the intensity. This is a great way for a coach to know the athletes perception and perspective of the session objective, duration and intensity as it relates to the athlete's goals. If there's a mis-communication about how the sessions are designed to help the athlete achieve their goals, this is a great way to make that mis-communication visible and get the conversation started if it hasn't happened already. The other insights that can be collected are wellness attributes that can be customized by the coach in terms of what the athlete sees and responds to. The athlete can complete include: Diet Mood Stress Muscle soreness Sleep quality Fatigue (waking) Fatigue (before) Fatigue (activity) Satisfaction Performance The coach can also select to make the wellness ratings on the day in the calendar view. With that feature enabled to be visible, a small yellow star appears and by simply hovering over the star, the coach can see the athlete's perspective on all of those attributes on a daily basis. When I have my weekly Skype call with my athletes, I ask them about subjective wellness items including stress, fatigue, injury or niggles. I ask how the workouts are going from their perspective, do they make sense given the goals, etc. But just like Jim Vance pointed out, athletes tend to forget what they felt like 6 days prior. You need to be a little careful with swim speed zones. If you have drastically different speeds without pull buoy, with pull buoy and with paddles, you may throw off your training pace classifications when you use those devices. Set your Speed Zones TrainingPeaks - go into your Account Settings/Zones/Speed-Pace. Scroll to Swim Speed/Pace and skip the Auto Calculation. Go to Add Zone and keep adding your Zones 1, 2, X, 3, Y, 4, and 5 Today's Plan - go to your Account Settings/Thresholds/Zones. This Sunday is Ironman Wisconsin - Beth James and her daughter Liza will be racing as a team. Beth James and her daughter Liza are on a journey together to compete at Ironman Wisconsin September 9th. Liza suffered from a traumatic brain injury in a car accident fourteen years ago. Taking inspiration from Rick and Dick Hoyt, Beth and Liza found joy through riding and running outdoors. This is an inspiring interview and story of adversity, love and discovery. Talansky competed in cross-country running at high school in Florida before taking up competitive cycling at age 17. After success in local amateur races, he moved to Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, North Carolina, winning the collegiate national championship race in his freshman year. He left college after one year to join the Amore & Vita team in Italy in 2009, but found the conditions unsatisfactory and returned to the US that spring.[4] He raced in the US in 2009 without team support. After a strong ride at the Tour of the Gila race, he joined Garmin for the 2010 season, moving up to the professional team for 2011, where he made the top ten at the 2011 Tour de Romandie. In 2012, Talansky scored his first professional victory in Europe at the Tour de l'Ain, and was named Garmin's lead rider for the 2012 Vuelta a España,[5] finishing seventh on the general classification. In 2013, he came second in Paris-Nice, having led the race for two days, and was selected for the Tour de France for the first time, again making the top ten overall. He won the 2014 Critérium du Dauphiné, joining a high quality breakaway group on the final stage to overcome a 39-second deficit to overnight race leader Alberto Contador. He retired from the 2014 Tour de France after a very uncomfortable day on his bike, due to multiple crashes. The broom wagon was following him at the end of the stage. In September 2017 Talansky announced his retirement from competition via an Instagram post. Coaching Philosophy: Mission: To partner with goal oriented athletes to help them accomplish their goals by setting a realistic training plan that integrates with their life vs. dominating it. Philosophical Statements: Coaching is a co-active relationship between coach and the athlete, we know more together. Matt will work with the athlete to develop a race schedule and training plan that fits with their lifestyle and progresses with their ability level. Matt sees his role is to show an athlete they can do more than they think they can. I will provide support and motivation to get them to stretch their limits, yet set realistic goals and benchmarks in the process. Matt will strive to keep an athlete injury free. Plans are built with proper rest and recovery included. I listen to how athletes are feeling physically and mentally and adapt accordingly. Direct communication is key. Matt will always respond to athletes in an honest, consistent, timely manner. Multisport is a lifestyle. Matt models a healthy lifestyle and encourage athletes to think about training as a life long endeavor vs. a short term goal. The sport should be hard work, but fun at the same time. One is Race Radio, which is the Race Director communication to the Team Directors. Race Radio is the first car behind the peloton and they communicate rider calls for water bottles, mechanicals and crashes. The other radio is the Team Radio set to a different frequency. All the riders and both cars have radios set to that frequency. This is for the Team Director primarily to communicate to the riders. If there's a split in the group, both cars talk to the riders in the group that they are covering. The riders can also call to the cars. Here's a quick 30 second sound bite. The first thing you'll here is Race Radio talking about the upcoming Feed Zone. This episode continues our coverage of some of the most epic races on the planet. This week we have repeat top 10 Norseman Xtreme Triathlon finisher Richard Rozok. Badwater 135 Ultra-marathon is billed as the "toughest foot race on the planet". With air temperatures reaching a high of 127 degrees and pavement temperatures in the 150s, it's no wonder that only 68 of the 99 racers this year finished. What was not well known until this year's race was Don Reichelt's name. He started in the event industry with as a field marketer and events manager for a major shoe company, before moving on as a one man show directing 11 different races including road running, trail running, biking, and triathlons. When I first discovered iKOR, it was 2017 under the pre 2018 WADA and USADA rules and I honestly decided to not pursue this as a topic for the podcast. I researched the WADA and USADA sites. I researched the USAT position and at that time there was not a clear distinction between THC and CBD. In January of 2018, CBD was removed from the WADA and USADA banned substance list. I got reconnected with Mark Fleming and Craig Sweeney at the Sansego camp here in Boulder. As we talked more and I tried it for myself, I have noticed an incredible difference in my recovery and reduced inflammation most of all. Our interview this week is with Tim O'Donnell. Interview: Timothy O’Donnell is one of the world’s most successful and experienced American long-course triathletes. As a professional, he has earned 50+ podium finishes including over 22 wins at major events throughout the world. Among the wins are nine Ironman 70.3 victories, three 140.6 wins, and six Armed Forces National Championships. At the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, Timothy finished 6th in 2016, 3rd in 2015, and 5th in 2013, finishing as top American in 2013 & 2015. In 2013, he tied the existing American IRONMAN record with an 8:01:32 victory at IRONMAN Brazil. In 2015 at IRONMAN Brazil, he completed his fastest IRONMAN to date at 7:55:56. He was the IRONMAN 70.3 US Pro Champion in 2012 and the IRONMAN US Pro Champion in 2011. O’Donnell’s sporting career began when he joined his first swim team at the age of five in Roseville, CA. He began to shine in the pool during his high school years while attending Wyoming Seminary Prep (SEM) in Kingston, Pennsylvania. At SEM O’Donnell was captain of the varsity swim team, set multiple school records and earned repeated district championships and all-state honors. O’Donnell then attended the United States Naval Academy (BS Naval Architecture, 2003) where he swam on the Varsity team for two seasons before fully committing to the sport of triathlon. As a triathlete, O’Donnell led the Naval Academy Men’s Team to two US National Triathlon Championship titles. He attended UC Berkeley (MSEng Ocean Engineering, 2005) as a Navy Ensign during which time he won the 2003 U.S. Under-23 National Championships and his first of six consecutive Armed Forces Triathlon Championships. In 2007 O’Donnell was assigned to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Victor Plata, a 2004 triathlon Olympian for the United States, is the guest in the first half of this episode. Victor retired in 2011 and we look back at his career, catch up with his post-triathlon life, and he provides wisdom for all triathletes. Todd Carver of Retul and Scott Holtz of Specialized are the guests for the second half of the show. Todd, also the guest on episode 10, is an expert bike fitter and founder of the bike fitting company Retul. Scott is a former bike fitter and works for Specialized as the head of the Specialized Bicycle Component University and Dealer Education. Specialized has been operating their own wind tunnel for a year, and we discuss some of the bike fit lessons that Scott and Todd have learned both in the tunnel and from many years of expertise in the field.

Boulder based coach Mat Steinmetz has worked with several top athletes as a coach, consultant, and/or bike fitter. Those athletes include Ironman Hawaii winner Craig Alexander and Liz Blatchford. This year he performed the bike fits for the top 3 women at Ironman Hawaii. Mat got his masters degree in exercise physiology from Ball State, and in 2009 he began working for bike fit company Retul in Boulder. He no longer works for Retul but he continues to perform bike fits and coach athletes. Subscribe via iTunes In this episode Todd Carver of Retul discusses common bike fit issues and trends in bike fits and equipment. I also discuss cramping and VO2 Max cycling intervals VO2 Max Bike Intervals A good workout for 8-10 weeks before your goal race done 2-3 times. Long warmup, then 6-10X1 mile fast, 3-4 minute recovery. Do this on flat ground on a course you can repeat - the recovery is a ride back to the start, so you’ll be doing the same course every time. If your time drops by more than 6% (11 seconds at 3:00 pace, and 7 seconds at 2:00 pace), quit the workout. It takes some pacing practice, but the main goal is to just go hard. Stick with the lower range of intervals unless you are experienced with a large base. This is a stressful workout and a good recovery (nutrition and sleep) is imperative. Cramping The cause of cramping is difficult to pinpoint and often misunderstood in general literature. Long and intense efforts are a common cause. Retul offers bike fits using their 3D motion capture software at their headquarters in Boulder, Colorado. They also manufacture and sell bike fitting hardware and software, plus offer educational services, to nearly 500 bike fit shops across the world. Retul has done bike fits for top teams including Garmin & Team Sky, while several other pro teams are fit via Retul equipment. When To Get a Bike Fit The biggest reason to get fit would be a problem such as knee pain or other pain/injury, but many athletes come in to make sure they are optimized for the best bike fit. Most Common Bike Fit Changes Raising the saddle and lowering the bars. Crank Length A shorter crank length among triathletes is a trend that started sometime around 2010. While stating that there is no solid evidence a shorter crank will be a significant benefit, Todd recommends triathletes, especially long course triathletes, use a crank length of 165mm-170mm. There is conclusive evidence that shortening the crank length doesn’t negatively affect power, but a shorter crank can positively impact aerodynamics and comfort. It can reduce drag because a shorter crank allows a more open hip angle at the top of the pedal stroke. This allows a lower back position compared to a larger crank, which reduces wind resistance. Anecdotal evidence from cyclists suggest that a closed hip angle (as compared to a standard road position without aerobars) results in lower output. Shorter cranks help alleviate this feeling. Top cycling time trialists are sticking with longer cranks. Bike Saddles Aftermarket saddles designed for triathlon are better than most OEM saddles. For aggressive positions use an anatomical saddle that lets you roll forward such as a Bontrager Hilo or ISM Adamo. For less aggressive positions in which you are weighting the back of the saddle it’s important to get good sitbone support. The Specialized Body Geometry saddle meets this need. Some cyclists break down one side of the saddle over the other which could lead to injury. Replace a broken down saddle. Make sure your saddle is straight (obvious, but not everyone has their saddle pointed straight forward). Bike Cleats High volume cyclist they should change them once per month. Most serious triathletes should change cleats 2-3 times per year.
