Some people have the impression that all chiropractors believe in outdated ideas about "vertebral subluxations", but the truth is that most chiropractors have moved past this, and are very similar to physical therapists, in that they are primary care doctors for sports injuries, musculoskeletal pain, low back pain and many other conditions, but they happen to have a strong emphasis on joint health and biomechanics. . The Tour de France began as a marketing gimmick by Henri Desgrange who was editor of a sports newspaper called L'Auto which was targeted to French auto racing enthusiasts. He started to cover cycling and in 1902 an employee suggested a stage bicycle race around France. The first tour was 2400 kilometers to be covered in six stages. It was less intended as an athletic contest as it was an experiment in human endurance limits. Desgrenge promised the steepest mountains, the darkest nights, the most violent winds, the most difficult routes. In that inaugural year, 60 riders started the Tour and 21 finished. Origin of the name Haute Route, (or the High Route or Mountaineers' Route) is the name given to a route (with several variations) undertaken on foot or by ski touring between Chamonix in France and Zermatt in Switzerland. The Haute Route’s objective is to deliver an unparalleled 'professional' experience for amateur cyclists. This means not only delivering first class hospitality and event management, but all the key ingredients that make up the culture and experience of professional road racing. Hundreds of riders every year from all over the world take part in the Haute Route events, and take on the most mythical passes and roads in all of cycling. The attraction of these legendary cols, such as the Ventoux, Alpe d’Huez, Galibier, Tourmalet, Stelvio and Independence Pass cannot be underestimated, but beyond the sporting challenge is another story, a human story that for many is life changing. What is the Haute Route exactly? The basic facts can be easily stated – the Haute Route cycling events are the world’s most prestigious multi-day cycling events for amateur riders, run over seven or three days, timed and ranked, across the most iconic mountain passes and valleys. We are fortunate to have the Chairman of Haute Route NA, Alain Lambert join us this week. Let's get into the interview right now. Welcome back. This week we have Olympian, Ironman and Advocate, Sarah True as our guest this week.  We got a chance to talk to her in Kona where she rocked up and sealed a 4th place to Daniella Ryf, Lucy Charles and Ann Hauge.  We are going to get to inside scoop on how that race went down plus much, much more. Today's show is supported by iKOR Labs.  iKOR is a clean, natural source of recovery enhancing CBD hemp extract that protects your body from the stresses of training, improves recovery from intense efforts and helps you maintain a positive mental state. Our interview is sponsored by Riplaces.  Riplaces are the no tie laces with custom tension for the perfect fit.  Pro triathlete proven and endorsed, most durable elastic bungee lace system available and they come in the  MHE logo package.  The regular price for the custom set is $19.98.  For a limited time, through the end of the year Riplaces is going to offer a 25% discount. Just use the code MHE25 to get that 25% discount. These are a great Christmas stocking idea for your loved endurance athlete.  Go to  https://www.riplaces.com/collections/mile-high-endurance for more information. We met Sarah in Kona and enjoyed her energy and spirit.  We saw her come out of the swim with the first group of female pros.  Later we saw her come into T2 with the first few riders.  Later still we saw her run her way up to 3rd place going into the energy lab. We were stoked thinking we were going to have an American on the podium this year.  All due respect to Switzerland, UK, and Germany - love you guys - USA is due.  On the media stand we got the news that Ann Haug had pulled into 3rd place.  Sarah held onto 4th.  We had all sorts of questions.  Did she go out on the run too fast?  How was her nutrition?  How was the heat affecting her? About two weeks ago, an article came out from USAT about Sarah "Breaking the Stigma about Mental Health".   We read the article, but we had a ton of questions.  What is her experience in her own words?  How common is depression and anxiety?  How do athlete's experience it?  What are it's causes?  How do women and men deal with it?  What are Sarah's recommendations for those dealing with depression?  We want to ask all of these things of our guest. Finally, we teased a video mid-week of Sarah at the 2012 London Olympics.  Note that she had not yet married Ben True at this point, so she was racing under her maiden name Sarah Groff.  If you watched the video, you know she came out of T2 in 7th place and battled her way up to running shoulder to shoulder with the other race leaders.  It was an epic and gutsy performance.  If you haven't seen it, make sure you  either find the post on our social media handles or it will be here in the show notes.  What was going on in Sarah's head during the race?  How deep was she going to catch the group?  Was she speeding up or were they slowing down? Here to answer all of these questions and more is our new show friend, Sarah True! Welcome back.  Our post interview discussion is sponsored by Halo Neuroscience.  The Halo Sport from Halo Neuroscience will help you learn the technique and form to get faster.  20 minutes of neural priming with the Halo Headset gives you an hour of neural plasticity to work and lock in the muscle movement that leads to strength, power and endurance.  If you are looking for a premium gift for your endurance athlete for the holidays, this is that item.  Use code MHE150 to save $150. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, in any given year, an estimated 16.2 million adults in the U.S. experience a major depressive episode. And an estimated 40 million adults live with anxiety disorders. Sarah True’s tips for dealing with depression as an athlete Seek professional help: People who love you, they want to help, but they don’t have the skills to do so. That is too much pressure on my husband (professional runner Ben True). Talk to a therapist. Back off the training: If you’re physically exhausted from overtraining, your capacity to absorb stressors is limited. Adjust your race and training schedule. But, staying active is important: Because of the hormonal and chemical response to enhance your mood. Find that balance. Communicate with your coach: A good coach will never judge you or use your mental health against you. Reach out for help: I let people close to me know how bad my depression was. Our interview this week is with ultrarunner and author Brian Burk.  Brian is joining us to talk about his latest book 26.2 Tips to run your best Marathon.  If you've been listening to the podcast for a while, you may recall Brian joining us in February of 2017 to talk about his fiction book, Running To Leadville.  If you are curious to hear that interview you can find episode #61.  You can listen to all of the MHE episodes by going to the MHE website and clicking on the "Interviews" menu.  All of the shows for the years 2016, 17 and 18 are listed in date order. Today's show is supported by iKOR Labs.  iKOR is a clean, natural source of recovery enhancing CBD that protects your body from the stresses of training, improves recovery from intense efforts and helps you maintain a positive mental state. The most bio-available CBD product on the market, iKOR is a highly protective anti-oxidant and effective anti-inflammatory.  WADA and USADA legal.  Used by world class professional athletes.  Save 20% by using the code "endurance" at checkout. Thanks to last week's guest, Coach Jim Vance on how he uses Today'sPlan and data to build athlete performance and confidence.  Author of Triathlete Science, Triathlon 2.0 and Running with Power.  Coach of athletes such as Ben Kanute with great success.  If you haven't heard the interview, go back and listen to episode #145.   Listener question: Janyne Kizer wrote in: What would be really cool is if the software imported the weather for the time/location of our workout. That way both athlete and coach could see that it was 1000% humidity and that's why the heart rate was so high, etc.   In the interview Jim had explained that you can enable the calendar view to display the weather for the day on the calendar where the athlete trains.  It actually uses the lat/long of the gps files that are being uploaded.  On the calendar it shows the day's high, low and humidity I confirmed with Jayne that she was asking for the temperature and humidity at the time of the workout.  We took that question to Benji Marshall of Today'sPlan and he wrote back: We show the temperature at the time of the activity in the bottom left when you open the activity. You can also add the avg, min and max temp in various areas of the platform that you can configure. This is the temperature that is recorded by the head unit at the time of the activity so is prone to being a little off as the head units can record some erroneous data in this regards but generally is quite good. See some screenshots below.  As for humidity I have put in a ticket to have this included as a field in the field select areas of the platform so it too can be added to the view by the user. Thanks Jim for the interview.  Thank  you Jayne for the question.  Thanks Benji for the response.  Our interview is sponsored by Riplaces.  Riplaces are the no tie laces with custom tension for the perfect fit.  Pro triathlete proven and endorsed, most durable elastic bungee lace system available and they come in the super cool MHE logo package for $19.98  https://www.riplaces.com/collections/mile-high-endurance Brian Burk grew up in Erie, PA.  He and wife (Michele), two wonderful children (Jessica and Anthony) and their dog (Hanna) now live in Virginia Beach.  He served in the US Air Force for 20 years.  Over the last 14 years he's logged over 12,000 miles in a good number of states, and overseas locations like Crete, Iraq, Sicily, Greenland, United Kingdom, and Qatar. The concept of 80% of training being easy and 20% being moderate to hard is not new.  This book packages what professional endurance athletes and their coaches have been practicing for years.  In addition to laying out good evidence and science, it also provides a lot of practical tools for determining your training  zones and how to put together a training plan that is based on these principles.  If you haven't heard the interview, go back and listen to episode #144. Our interview is sponsored by Riplaces.  Riplaces are the no tie laces with custom tension for the perfect fit.  Pro triathlete proven and endorsed, most durable elastic bungee lace system available and they come in the super cool MHE logo package for $19.98  https://www.riplaces.com/collections/mile-high-endurance Jim Vance is an elite endurance sports coach, author, and sport technology and training consultant based in San Diego, California. There are few individuals in the world with the teaching background, elite athlete experience, and coaching experience with elites, amateurs and juniors, as well as knowledge of training, like Jim Vance. Use code MHE150 to save $150. Jim Vance Debrief: One of the Today'sPlan features that Jim Vance described are the RPE of the workout and Subjective Wellness ratings the athlete can provide on a daily basis.  As a coach we can look at all the power files, paces and heart rate levels in a workout and not have insight into how the athlete experienced their workout, their day, and what might be going on that contributed to the power, heart rate and pace.  At a glance, looking at the workout in the calendar I can see the RPE.   With one click, I can see the Session Rating recorded by the athlete, the duration rating by the athlete and the intensity.  This is a great way for a coach to know the athletes perception and perspective of the session objective, duration and intensity as it relates to the athlete's goals.  If there's a mis-communication about how the sessions are designed to help the athlete achieve their goals, this is a great way to make that mis-communication visible and get the conversation started if it hasn't happened already.   The other insights that can be collected are wellness attributes that can be customized by the coach in terms of what the athlete sees and responds to.  The athlete can complete include: Diet Mood Stress Muscle soreness Sleep quality Fatigue (waking) Fatigue (before) Fatigue (activity) Satisfaction Performance The coach can also select to make the wellness ratings on the day in the calendar view.  With that feature enabled to be visible, a small yellow star appears and by simply hovering over the star, the coach can see the athlete's perspective on all of those attributes on a daily basis. When I have my weekly Skype call with my athletes, I ask them about subjective wellness items including stress, fatigue, injury or niggles.  I ask how the workouts are going from their perspective, do they make sense given the goals, etc.  But just like Jim Vance pointed out, athletes tend to forget what they felt like 6 days prior.  Having it recorded daily gives the athlete and the coach data, recorded on the day, of the athlete's subjective sense of what they are experiencing. http://303triathlon.com/kona-must-dos-by-khem/ Video of the week: Family affair at Ironman Augusta 70.3 Double win In the News is sponsored by Rudy Project.  Rudy Project has the helmets, glasses and gear to help you ride safe and look great.  Use code MHE30 to get 30% off your full price items. Our interview this week is with Coach Matt Fitzgerald is co-author of 80/20 Triathlon with David Warden. This book packages what professional endurance athletes and their coaches have been practicing for years.  You've heard this concept in dozens of interviews on this podcast starting as far back as former Olympic Nordic Skier Jim Galanes, Dr. Inigo San Milan, and many more. Welcome to Episode #144 of the Mile High Endurance podcast.  Mile High Endurance is your weekly connection to coaches, experts and pro athletes to help you reach your endurance and triathlon goals. We're your hosts coaches Rich Soares and Khem Suthiwan and 303 Chief Bill Plock.  Thanks for joining us for another week of endurance interviews and discussion. Go to www.ikorlabs.com for more details.  Thanks to last week's guest, pro triathlete Andrew Talansky.  Andrew gave us the rare perspective of top pro cyclist who has a top 10 GC finish in the Tour de France and now competing as a professional triathlete at the 70.3 and 140.6 distance.  Andrew has a ton of respect for the pros he competes against and he is slowly earning respect as he has been climbing up the result ladder.  He will be competing at Ironman Louisville in a few short weeks and we are eager to see how he performs there and in 2019.  We hope to see him at the Ironman World Championship in 2019.  If you haven't heard the interview, go back and listen to episode #143. Speaking of previous guests.  We want to put out a "heal fast" wish to Benji Marshall from Today's Plan. Benji had a fall on his bike earlier this week and broke his collar bone.  His boss, Ben Bowley sent me an email.  Ben really appreciate the follow up and hope Benji heals up quick. Our interview is sponsored by Riplaces.  Riplaces are the no tie laces with custom tension for the perfect fit.  Pro triathlete proven and endorsed, most durable elastic bungee lace system available and they come in the super cool MHE logo package for $19.98  https://www.riplaces.com/collections/mile-high-endurance Cutting-edge research has proven that triathletes and other endurance athletes experience their greatest performance when they do 80 percent of their training at low intensity and the remaining 20 percent at moderate to high intensity. But the vast majority of recreational triathletes are caught in the so-called “moderate-intensity rut,” spending almost half of their time training too hard–harder than the pros. Training harder isn’t smarter; it actually results in low-grade chronic fatigue that prevents recreational athletes from getting the best results.  In 80/20 Triathlon, Matt Fitzgerald and David Warden lay out the real-world and scientific evidence, offering concrete tips and strategies, along with complete training plans for every distance–Sprint, Olympic, Half-Ironman, and Ironman–to help athletes implement the 80/20 rule of intensity balance. Benefits include reduced fatigue and injury risk, improved fitness, increased motivation, and better race results. Welcome back.  Our post interview discussion is sponsored by Halo Sport.  The Halo Sport from Halo Neuroscience will help you learn the technique and form to get faster.  20 minutes of neural priming with the Halo Headset gives you an hour of neural plasticity to work and lock in the muscle movement that leads to strength, power and endurance.  Use code MHE150 to save $150. We're your hosts coaches Rich Soares and Khem Suthiwan and 303 Chief Bill Plock.  Thanks for joining us for another week of endurance interviews and discussion. Thanks to last week's guest, Beth James of Team Liza.  We remarked on this incredible story in recent weeks and figured the timing is perfect to share it with you this week.  This Sunday is Ironman Wisconsin - Beth James and her daughter Liza will be racing as a team. Beth James and her daughter Liza are on a journey together to compete at Ironman Wisconsin September 9th.  Liza suffered from a traumatic brain injury in a car accident fourteen years ago.  Taking inspiration from Rick and Dick Hoyt, Beth and Liza found joy through riding and running outdoors. This is an inspiring interview and story of adversity, love and discovery. Talansky competed in cross-country running at high school in Florida before taking up competitive cycling at age 17. After success in local amateur races, he moved to Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, North Carolina, winning the collegiate national championship race in his freshman year. He left college after one year to join the Amore & Vita team in Italy in 2009, but found the conditions unsatisfactory and returned to the US that spring.[4] He raced in the US in 2009 without team support. After a strong ride at the Tour of the Gila race, he joined Garmin for the 2010 season, moving up to the professional team for 2011, where he made the top ten at the 2011 Tour de Romandie.   In 2012, Talansky scored his first professional victory in Europe at the Tour de l'Ain, and was named Garmin's lead rider for the 2012 Vuelta a España,[5] finishing seventh on the general classification. In 2013, he came second in Paris-Nice, having led the race for two days, and was selected for the Tour de France for the first time, again making the top ten overall.   He won the 2014 Critérium du Dauphiné, joining a high quality breakaway group on the final stage to overcome a 39-second deficit to overnight race leader Alberto Contador.   He retired from the 2014 Tour de France after a very uncomfortable day on his bike, due to multiple crashes. The broom wagon was following him at the end of the stage.   In September 2017 Talansky announced his retirement from competition via an Instagram post. However, the following month he indicated that he was now "un-retired" and would take up competing in triathlon   Teasers for topics: 303Merge - Bill Donkey Run Practice - Khem TO and losing the pink helmet AG World Champs in Gold Coast; Stacia and Kevie - https://goldcoast.triathlon.org/2018_itu_world_triathlon_grand_final/ Use of anti-biotics and training or racing - https://runnersconnect.net/antibiotics-and-running-performance/ Ironman Title Sponsor Amazon - http://www.ironman.com/triathlon/events/americas/ironman/world-championship.aspx#/axzz5QwfJtuZ5 Video of the week: Tim and Rinny Show I lost the Pink helmet bet Make a donation at their Ironman Foundation site of $20 and be entered in a draw Talks about how the ride up to Hawi last year surprised him with 330 watts and he's preparing for that effort in his training Keep watching and there's a video of Tim getting out of his high altitude tent   Upcoming Interviews: Coach Matt Fitzgerald - author of The Endurance Diet, 80/20 Running and now 80/20 Triathlon with David Warden Jim Vance - will join us soon to take the discussion of Today's Plan to the practical application as a coach or athlete and talk in greater detail about how it can make you more effective and efficient as a coach Todd Carver, Cliff Simms and Franko Vaterott- co-founder of Retul and now working with Specialized. Heads 'N Tales Podcast - Talking Sports Injury Rehab, Prevention, Perseverance, Concussions & Athlete Transition

In Episode 68 of the Heads 'N Tales podcast I interview Parabolic Performance & Rehab Performance Director, Angelo Todaro, CSCS, FMS, USAW.  Rather than talking about persevering after injury, illness or another obstacle, Angelo and I discuss how to prevent injuries from happening in the first place.  Obviously, it is impossible to quantify injuries prevented, but we discuss what goes into building a body of resilience.  We use the elements involved in building a house as an analogy, which includes the foundation, support beams, electrical panel and the esthetic exterior. Angelo is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist by the NSCA Certification Commission and a certified Sports Performance Coach through USA Weightlifting.   Before joining Parabolic Performance and Rehab, Angelo owned and operated a very successful private training business in Bergen county New Jersey. He has held the position of strength and conditioning coach with the San Diego Padres in their minor league system and with a United States Tennis Association regional training center. He has also completed coaching internships with the University of Connecticut Strength and Conditioning department in Storrs, Connecticut, and at the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s Human Performance Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Building a Body of Resilience Foundation:  The foundation is the most important part of building a body of resilience, but it is also the least sexy.  The foundation is comprised of general health markers that include, blood profile, organs, hormones, and immune system.  Angelo recommends going to see your doctor to getting blood work and a general physical to find out if there are any glaring issues.  In addition, having solid general movement patterns is a key principle to the athlete's foundation.  Angelo and his team at Parabolic use the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) to assess their athletes in this domain.  The FMS tests 7 movement patterns which include a deep squat, in-line lunge, hurdle step, pushup stability, shoulder stability, leg raise and rotary stability. The key to the test is that all movements can be performed without pain. Click the link above to learn more about the FMS.  The team at Parabolic also utilize methods from the Postural Restoration Institute to address foundational issues.  I have been doing some of these postural restoration exercises with Parabolic Physical Therapist, Dr. Danielle Clarke and have been seeing great results in my knee rehab.  Some of the exercises involve inflating a balloon, which sounds bizarre, but I must say, I now feel the best I have felt since before my surgery. Overall, the foundation of a resilient body includes having good general h

Overall, the foundation of a resilient body includes having good general health, good general movement and a good attitude. Support Beams: The support beams include stability/mobility. These two requirements for both of these domains will vary by sport and position. During this portion of our conversation Angelo and have a sports specialization discussion.  He mentions Urban Meyer's tastes for multi-sport athletes in his recruiting classes.  Angelo also mentions the importance of prioritization when playing multiple sports and just playing for fun sometimes.  This is something that I feel athletes get out of touch with as they get older.  Angleo with some of his NFL guys. Electrical Panel: Angelo gives us a brief lesson on the role of nervous system adaptations. Furnace: The furnace element of the resilient athlete is right in Angelo's wheelhouse and he dropped some serious knowledge bombs in this area.  In this part of our conversation we discuss nutrition, recovery and supplements.   In regard to nutrition, Angelo teaches us about why food quality is most important, portion size and the roles proteins, fats and carbs play in fueling the body during workouts and recovery. Angelo and the team at Parabolic structure the nutrition program for their NFL combine athletes and use a company called Eat Clean Bro to ensure they are getting the highest quality of nutrition.   Food as fuel is obviously a major contributor to an athlete's recovery, but sleep quality is just as important.  Angelo mentioned how important sleep is on multiple occasions throughout the interview.  Specifically, he says athletes should aim to get at least 9-10 hours of sleep to properly recover.  This is because you don't get stronger in the gym, you actually get weaker.  You get stronger while you sleep because your body is recovering.  Technology like Bioforce can provide insight into recovery based on an athletes heart rate variations.  Angelo is also very knowledgeable about supplements and goes in depth on powder protein, creatine,  fish oil and its benefits in brain function, hormonal function and inflammation reduction.  He highlights the importance of trying to find these supplements in their purest forms.  One way to do this is by looking for the NSF Certification on the labels, which proves what is listed in the ingredients on the label actually correlates to contents of the container.   Esthetics: Looks can sometimes be deceiving.  Just like a termite-ridden house, an athlete with a sinking foundation, deteriorating support beams and a smoking furnace is doomed.  Angelo said that youth is wasted on the young because they never think anything will ever happen to them.  To some degree, athletes need this mentality to perform without fear, but those who take a proactive approach to make the necessary repairs will reap the benefits of an extended athletic career.  Injury is sometimes unavoidable so we end this topic of discussion with one on returning to training after an injury. We finish the episode by listing the characteristics of Angelo's most successful athletes. Angelo notes their willingness to sacrifice a social life/"career" and their good relationships with failure as the two most notable traits. During his free time, Angelo enjoys training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, going rock climbing, and participating in many other combat based and outdoor sports. He is also an avid fan of Mixed Martial Arts and rarely misses the opportunity to watch any MMA event in the area, professional and amateur alike. "Chef Ange" has recently started filming some of his recipes. His first two episodes can be seen below.  Angelo and I plan on doing a nutrition specific episode to go more in depth on a complicated topic in the near future. Chef Ange walks you through how to make a super simple and delicious dish. Oven roasted crispy chicken thighs with roasted asparagus, fingerling potatoes and a honey mustard sauce. Asian Short Rib Tacos Green Cabbage Leaf Wrap / Miso Quinoa / Cucumber Salad / Kimchi / Sriracha Yogurt Sauce ASIAN SHORT RIB 2 lb Beef Short Ribs 1 TSP Chinese 5 Spice Powder 1 TSP Brown Sugar 1 TSP Kosher Salt 2 In Chuck Ginger (Grated) 7-10 Garlic Cloves (Chopped) 1 Onion (Chopped) 1 Shallot (Chopped) 5-6 Scallions (Whites Only Chopped).
