This polyvocal podcast tells the story so far of Inquilab / Ink-Lab; an alternative reading group based at University of the Arts London. Outraged by the brutal murder of George Floyd many individuals within higher education (HE) were incensed, leading to a collective realisation of the imperative for transformative action. In response, Dr. Gurnam Singh, Jheni Arboine, and a small cohort of UAL staff and students made a decisive commitment to establish a distinctive reading group—Inquilab. This group distinguishes itself by embracing an unapologetically radical approach, with its foundation rooted in the principles of decolonisation, anti-racism, and flattened hierarchies. Inquilab's primary objective is to foster an authentic space where UAL staff and students can converge, encouraging the exploration and contemplation of radical pedagogy and practices within a supportive, open, and organic space. In this podcast we hear from Inquilab's founders about the context, values and ideas that were behind its beginnings and how it has since developed into its 3rd year. Participants and contributors tell us what brings them back and how the unique qualities and approaches that Inquilab embraces makes it a very different kind of discursive space. We hear about what it means to be able to bring your true self to a studio setting and how that fundamentally reconfigures hierarchies to create a greater sense of belonging and community for both staff and students. A bubbling geothermal pool in the middle of a sagebrush desert surrounded by crickets. The gentle bubbling sound is very relaxing, the crickets are a classic evening sound, everything is still and peaceful and no one else around to interrupt. Distant thunder punctuates the moment. "How does one create a sound to help others to sleep and not make it tedious? I enjoyed the "bubbling, hot pool" of Tim Kahn's field recording and tried to create something that takes someone on an exploration but can also possibly induce a feeling of calm and serenity."

Where do we find the intersections between translation practices and frameworks of language justice? How can the metaphors we use to talk about translation move toward language justice? Only a fraction of works published in translation are plays, and only a fraction of plays produced are translations, but theater is a wonderful genre that comes with its own unique set of translation challenges. Moving from late 19th- and early 20th-century American Yiddish theater to contemporary Japanese theater, Claire Breger-Belsky talks to Nahma Sandrow, Yiddish theater translator and historian, and Aya Ogawa, a playwright, director, performer, and translator from the Japanese, about translating drama. People commonly picture translators, like writers, working alone with their texts. Presenting a different view, this episode explores community and the ways translators support each other and work together. Claire Breger-Belsky gets an inside look from American Literary Translators Association (ALTA) program manager and Spanish/Swedish translator Kelsi Vanada, and Julia Conrad catches up with Italian/German translator, publishing consultant, and member of multiple translation collectives Alta Price. This week on the podcast, Mark Mirchandani and Gabi Ferrara talk with Nimesh Bhagat about Cloud SQL Insights. This powerful tool enables developers to diagnose database issues for faster, smoother performance. Nimesh tells us the inspiration for Cloud SQL Insight’s development and describes its biggest benefits. One of the important aspects of Insights is the ability for developers to gain an application-centric view by allowing them to tag database queries with SQL comments. These tags are aggregated in Insights and give developers a visual of the database queries. Here, developers can see load patterns and use that information to improve database efficiency. Cloud SQL Insights offers managed database analysis that helps developers understand the past and predict the future. Simplifying the journey of database debugging, Nimesh explains, was the goal of creating Cloud SQL Insights. He takes us through the process of using the software, pointing out the improvements Insights makes over the old way. Cloud SQL Insights only launched in January, but it’s already helping numerous clients with their projects. Nimesh describes these real-world uses, including Major League Baseball experience as part of Insights Early Access Program. Nimesh Bhagat Nimesh is a product manager at Google Cloud, he leads Cloud SQL Insights. He has worked across engineering and product roles, building highly available and high performance enterprise infrastructure used by Fortune 500 companies. Vienna lockdown sound reimagined by Tim Kahn. "I first used maps and street views to look and see what this place was like before the lockdown. It looked busy and noisy. I was given this recording randomly, I like the constraint of working with something that I did not choose as well as it felt appropriate for this as none of us have chosen to be so constrained in this way. "With one exception all the sounds in my work come directly from the original recording. The one that did not originate from the recording is the "melodic" part which was added last as my touch of a mix of sadness, calmness, beauty, and hope. "A few sounds are entirely from the original recording, such as the ticking at the end and some traffic. Most of the other parts were derived from the original recording using Izotope RX to select various frequencies. My overall aim was to create a bit of tension and uncertainty, some destruction, but also find some awe and wonder and beauty in the stillness. I hope that comes across." Today’s show is a guided meditation to help you drift off into sleep when you feel like you have just too much on your mind to rest. Because even when it's hard to hit the pause button, or you feel unworthy of taking a break, YOU ACTUALLY DESERVE REST. This guided meditation was actually inspired by my own anxious thoughts…and the things I try to remember when I am coaxing my body and brain to stop frantically thinking and moving...and just rest. Because it’s so helpful for me, I thought it could be helpful to share with you. Did you know your entire vibration resets in your sleep? Did you know that anytime you feel out of alignment or anxious, taking a nap can help you feel better and you will wake up in a higher, more positive state of being IF you make it your intention to fall asleep in peace. So if you find your thoughts running away, breathe and tell yourself, “It’s good for me to rest and reset.” Breathe. Take deep breaths. I’m so glad you’re taking this time for self-care. You deserve to feel better. You deserve peace and rest. You deserve to give your mind a break, your body a break, to be here right now — in the present moment with your body and your mind at ease. It's good for your soul. Between my intended pauses, take the time to soak into the silence. To feel your breath. To hear your breath. To be here now. To rest here now. To relax here now. To flow with the ocean. Be present now. Only think of my voice and your breathe, and let the ocean and whimsical harp music pull you away into the horizon…fall deeply into this moment of rest now. Let's journey to the ocean shall we. I'll take my harp. You can rest in the sand. There's nothing to do here, but drift away... I hope you’ve enjoyed the show today. I am thinking that I will throw in a guided meditation or affirmation every other month, between interviews. I love writing these meditations and creating soothing sounds with my harp. Also, I want to say a special thank you to Tim Kahn for recording the “Atlantic Ocean Waves” audio that I borrowed from this source: https://freesound.org/people/tim.kahn/sounds/197714/ I create these for you, and I create these for me…because we all can use a little rest. Especially when life gets so sticky and rushed, we have to be intentional to carve out self-care time and prioritize our self-love rituals…After all, if we don’t love ourselves well, we can’t love others well.

The podcast today is all about conversational AI and Dialogflow with our Google guest, Priyanka Vergadia. Priyanka explains to Mark Mirchandani and Brian Dorsey that conversational AI includes anything with a conversational component, such as chatbots, in anything from apps, to websites, to messenger programs. If it uses natural language understanding and processing to help humans and machines communicate, it can be classified as conversational AI. These programs work as translators so humans and computers can chat seamlessly. We discuss how people interact with conversational AI, maybe without even realizing it. From asking Google Home to set your alarm to getting customer service support at your favorite online store, AI is probably working behind the scenes to help. Priyanka also tells us all about Google’s natural language understanding and processing program, Dialogflow. Designed to simplify the process, Dialogflow allows you to input a simple idea like asking for coffee, and watch as the program automatically includes many of the different ways people would naturally ask for coffee. Coffee would be great right now! Listen in to find out the best (and worst) use cases and practices for this powerful tool! Priyanka Vergadia Priyanka Vergadia is a Developer Advocate at Google. She worked directly with customers for 1.5 years prior to recently joining Google Cloud Developer Relations team. She loves architecting cloud solutions and enjoys building conversational experiences. Her interest in Conversational AI led to the Deconstructing Chatbots YouTube series. Priyanka is currently starring in a new show called “Get Cooking in Cloud” where she will be sharing recipes to cook various business solutions on Google Cloud. White sands and ruined ships as far as the eye can see, with a treacherous drop to the Trench below, the Kvadrata is the marketplace of choice for anyone brave enough to call themselves a truescrapper. Lola has sent Caine and Vic to fetch some coordinates from there, which might be…difficult to say the least. Featuring cassette tapes, friendly friends, and a possibly broken nose. We’ve reached the finale of Make This Movie, Season 1. Thank you so much for coming along on the ride to making Counterintelligence. Many lessons were learned throughout the process, most of which were covered throughout the season’s 12 episodes. To highlight the ones that were and insert a few that weren’t, in this episode Chris will go down the list of 12 lessons learned while making this movie—one lesson for each episode. You’ll hear a few statements to back up these lessons from a couple familiar voices, David Pennington, Andréa Tolbert, Michael Hall, Mike Elliott, and Tim Kahn. And you’ll be brought back to Chris’ audio diary. You’ll even hear Chris’ personal theory on the two types of people in the world: Spielberg people, and Scorsese people. Counterintelligence is nearly complete now, and due out in the fall of 2018. Not all lessons have been learned or even digested yet, but we hope the ones that have been mean something to you and your filmmaking. We’ll see you next year for Season 2 of Make This Movie. Thanks for making Season 1 a joy! For exclusive access to documents, guides, and detailed breakdowns, expanding on this and other episodes, sign up and ShoHawk.com/makethismovie!
