My guest on this episode is John Lorinc. John is a journalist and editor who writes regularly for places like the Globe and Mail, the Toronto Star, The Walrus, and Spacing Magazine, where he is a senior editor. His previous books include The New City and Dream States: Smart Cities, Technology, and the Pursuit of Urban Utopias. The most recent book for which he is the sole author is the memoir No Jews Live Here, published in 2024 by Coach House. The Literary Review of Canada called the book “a poignant exploration of survival and identity that will resonate deeply with readers interested in Holocaust history.”John and I talk about his enduring interest in cities, about writing a Holocaust-themed memoir after working for so long in the realm of urbanism, and about his long relationship with Coach House BooksThis podcast is produced and hosted by Nathan Whitlock, in partnership with The Walrus.Music: "simple-hearted thing" by Alex Lukashevsky. Episode 172 is a book club book! This month we're talking about Gen's pick, Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler. The novel follows Lauren through her journal entries as she is forced from her home and navigates a hostile world ravaged by climate change and social inequality.Show NotesGen has been putting off this book for a long time because it takes place largely in the mid-late 2020s and that felt a little too close to home.Parable of the Sower is the first book in a planned series that Octavia Butler unfortunately didn't have the chance to finish, as she died of a stroke in 2006. The second book is Parable of the Talents, which was published in 1998. The planned third book was to be called Parable of the Trickster. As you can probably guess, a lot of what happens in this book was distressingly familiar.Did Suzanne Collins read Parable of the Sower? Inquiring minds would like to know. There are definitely some common themes with The Hunger Games series. Our next book club selection is Jette's pick, Scorched Grace by Margot Douaihy. It's about a tattooed, queer nun who solves mysteries! What more could you ask for? This is the first book of the Sister Holiday mysteries and we'll be talking about it in July.Next episode is a(nother) spring hangout episode. We'll be talking about everything else we've been reading, which is always a fun time.Keep an eye out for our annual Coach House episode. We'll be reading their forthcoming publication, Born by Heather Birrell.Other Books MentionedKindred by Octavia ButlerThe Handmaid's Tale by Margaret AtwoodOryx and Crake by Margaret AtwoodThe Hunger Games Series by Suzanne Collins

Tune into this fabulous interview with a player who was gone too soon from Season 22.You can find Zubair on instagram: @zubairmohajirOriginally from Chennai, India, Chef Zubair Mohajir was a former financial analyst and began his career in the culinary field after getting laid off during the 2008 financial crisis. Starting as a prep cook and working his way up to sous chef in Chicago at Jean-Georges Vongerichten's the Pump Room, Zubair studied French techniques and Southeast Asian flavors before joiningThomas Keller's Bouchon as chef de partie in Napa. While there, he contacted the renowned Gaggan Anand to express his interest in an apprenticeship and was later invited to work at Gaggan in Bangkok. Returning to Chicago after six months, he launched his acclaimed pop-up Wazwan before opening his first brick-and-mortar restaurant in 2021. Two years later, he transformed the space into two concepts Lilac Tiger, highlighting South Asian street food, and the Coach House, his fine-dining restaurant. He recently opened his newest endeavor, Mirra, where diners experience a blend of Indian and Mexican flavors. Zubair has garnered industry acclaim as a 2022 Jean Banchet Rising Chef of the Year and a two-time James Beard semi-finalists—first in 2023 as Best Chef Great Lakes, and then in 2024, as Emerging Chef of the Year.

My guest on this very Toronto-centric episode is Shawn Micallef. Shawn is an author whose books include Full Frontal TO, The Trouble With Brunch, and Frontier City. He's a weekly columnist at the Toronto Star, and a senior editor and co-founder of Spacing magazine. His most recent book is a fully updated version of Stroll: Psychogeographic Walking Tours of Toronto, originally published by Coach House Books in 2010. The updated version was published in 2024, also by Coach House. Author Douglas Coupland called Stroll "a smart and intimate guide to the city that makes you feel like an insider from start to finish."Shawn and I talk about his decision to finally abandon his Twitter account, which had been a big part of how he explored cities, about how updating Stroll turned out to be a more onerous task than he'd originally thought, and about how writing a weekly newspaper column and becoming a parent has a funny way of delaying big new book projects. This podcast is produced and hosted by Nathan Whitlock, in partnership with The Walrus.Music: "simple-hearted thing" by Alex Lukashevsky. 'SUSANNA HOFFS BANGLES LEGEND THE LOST INTERVIEWS' Susanna Hoffs is the beautiful, talented & iconic vocalist for the commercially successful all- female pop/rock/new wave/ band ‘The Bangles.' Hoffs angelic and awe-inspiring vocals are definitive on such Bangles classics as …“Manic Monday” (1985 #2 US Billboard Hit), “Walk Like an Egyptian” (1986 #1 US Billboard Hit), “If She Knew What She Wants” (1986 #29 US Billboard Hit), “Hazy Shade of Winter” (1987 #2 US Billboard Hit), “Walking Down Your Street” (1987 #11 US Billboard Hit),“In Your Room” (1988 #5 US Billboard Hit), and the breathtaking “Eternal Flame” (1988 #1 US Billboard Hit). Hoffs is also ‘The Bangles' rhythm guitarist and songwriter. THE BANGS: After Susanna Hoffs graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, where she studied theatre, dance, and art, she headed back to Los Angeles and placed an ad in The Recycler, an LA based classifieds newspaper. A trio began to form with the addition of Sisters Vicky Peterson (vocals/guitars) and Debbi Peterson (vocals/drums) while subsequently adding Annette Zilinskas on bass. After short stints with names such as ‘The Colours' and ‘The Supersonic Bangs,' the newly formed all-girl band eventually settled on ‘The Bangs' while swiftly becoming a vital part of the Los Angeles Paisley Underground scene. The Bangs debut single “Getting Out of Hand” was released on their label DownKiddie Records and caught the attention of KROQ deejay Rodney Bingenheimer who repeatedly played the record on his show. THE BANGLES: ‘The Bangs' were auspiciously mandated to change their name so the group dropped ‘The' and added the letters ‘les' to form ‘Bangles,' a banner that would flourish into one of the greatest all-female groups in rock and roll history. In 1982, under new manager Miles Copeland, The Bangles supported The English Beat on a UK tour. In 1983, the group made its first appearance on Dick Clark's American Bandstand. In 1984, ‘All Over the Place,' The Bangles first full-length album was released on CBS (Columbia) Records. Michael Steele had replaced Annette Zilinskas on bass. Steele began her music career as Micki Steele with The Runaways. ‘All Over the Place,' spawned the singles”Hero Takes a Fall,” and “Going Down to Liverpool” which featured Susanna's childhood neighbor and family friend Leonard Nimoy. The Bangles popularity escalated and was asked to join such acts as ‘Cyndi Lauper' and ‘Huey Lewis and the News' on tour.   Susanna Hoffs and The Bangles had captivated the attention of R&B/Pop/Funk/ music artist & songwriter ‘Prince.' Prince offered his penned single “Manic Monday” (1984) to The Bangles and the group promptly brought the tune into the recording studio. “Manic Monday” (1986) became The Bangles first big hit peaking at #2 on Billboards US Charts. Their second studio album ‘Different Light' (1986) produced by David Kahne peaked at #2 on the US Billboard Charts and is considered to be their most successful to date. Also in 1986, The Bangles opened for 'Queen' at Slane Castle, Ireland.   In 1987, “Walk like an Egyptian” won Best Video at the 15th Annual Music Awards and again at the 5th Annual American Video Awards. ‘Everything' (1988) The Bangles third studio album spawned the Top 5 Hit “In Your Room,” and their worldwide #1 single “Eternal Flame” penned by Susanna Hoffs, Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly. The Bangles attained a well-deserved hiatus throughout the 90's but returned with rock and roll vengeance in 1999. They released their fourth studio album entitled ‘Doll Revolution' in 2003. Bassist Michael Steele officially left The Bangles in 2005 and the band decided to use guest bassists while on tour. The Bangles most recent album ‘Sweetheart of the Sun' was released in 2011. In January of 2014, The Bangles returned to the legendary Whisky A GO GO to celebrate the club's 50th anniversary. SUSANNA HOFFS: In 1991, Susanna released her debut solo album entitled ‘When You're a Boy' produced by David Kahne. The album spawned the Top 40 hit single “My Side of the Bed.” The release featured such musical luminaries as John Entwistle, Jim Keltner, and Donovan. In 1996, Susanna Hoffs released her second studio album entitled ‘Susanna Hoffs.' Based on a Saturday Night Live stint in the early 1990's, Hoffs performed in the band ‘Ming Tea' with … Mike Myers, Matthew Sweet, Christopher Ward and Stuart Johnson. The SNL skit morphed into a three comedy film series ... Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997), Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999), and Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002). Jay Roach, Susanna's husband directed the Austin Power series and ‘Ming Tea' performed in all three movies. In 2006, Susanna collaborated with alternative rocker Matthew Sweet under the name ‘Sid n Susie,' and released ‘Under the Covers' Volumes 1, 2 &3 featuring classic rock cover songs of the 60's,70's, and 80's. In 2012, Susanna released her critically-acclaimed studio album entitled ‘Someday.' Susanna's vocals are more radiant than ever. Hoffs collaborated with musical partner Andrew Brassell and producer Mitchell Froom on her best solo album to date. All the tracks are co-penned by Susanna Hoffs. Hoffs & Brassell continue to co-write music and hope to release a new album sometime in 2015. ‘Susanna Hoffs' performs at The Satellite in Los Angeles on July 18th with special guests Fred Armisen and Petra Haden. ‘The Bangles' kicked off their summer concert series on June 6th at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, California … click [Here] for a complete ‘Bangles' tour listing. Michelle left school at 15 to become an apprentice hairdresser. At 21, she set out to travel around Australia, practicing her hairdressing skills along the way. It wasn't until the terrorist attacks of September 11 2001, that Michelle felt a strong desire to return home and be near family. She soon relocated to Tumut, where her sister was living. It was in Tumut that Michelle's entrepreneurial spirit was sparked.Recognising a lack of eateries in their hometown, Michelle took the initiative to establish a cafe of her own. She successfully launched The Coach House. Although the cafe has changed ownership over time, it continues to flourish. Not stopping there, Michelle ventured into additional entrepreneurial pursuits, founding another cafe and operating a mobile coffee and pancake van. However, wanting a job that was less labour-intensive, Michelle decided to pursue her passion for outdoor riding. This led to opening Ground Up in 2017.Ground Up stock a full range of bikes that cater to all needs, from seasoned professionals to beginners. It's the second book of poetry for the pod and we absolutely loved it.Show NotesHouse of Anansi's namesake comes from the spider god of West-African tradition, Kwaku Anansi, who created the world.House of Anansi is located in Toronto. Be sure to check out their sister imprint, Groundwood Books, for children's and young adult lit. If you're looking for the book version of the annual CBC Massey Lectures, it's House of Anansi you want! The All + Flesh was published on August 8 and is available for purchase. The other book of poetry we talked about on the pod is Because the Sun by Sarah Burgoyne, published by our other fave indie publisher, Coach House. Our next episode is a book club episode! We'll be talking about Bear by Marian Engel (also published by House of Anansi). It was a tidy plan. Except for one thing: Man plans and the gods laugh. To fund his life and education in Toronto, Todd worked a part-time job—as a corrections officer at the infamous Don Jail.Although he spent a few years working with kids, Todd's experience in corrections propelled him into a 33-year career within Canadian law enforcement.Small-town policing isn't just rescuing cats from trees and performing wellness checks. The concession roads and rural routes of southwestern Ontario are home to some incredibly kind, resilient people, and scene to some strange, tragic and heinous events. Todd dealt with them all, from the naked machete-wielding man who claimed to be Jesus Christ, to armed American fugitives, decades-old sexual assaults, harrowing traffic accidents, violent home invasions, and even a year spent “Uncle Charlie” (undercover) investigating drug traffickers. The title comes from a phrase uttered by a motorcycle gang member who demonstrated his disdain for police by pulling a “wheelie” on his motorcycle following a traffic stop. The biker was charged with stunt driving. In his defense in court, the biker said, in a thick French accent: “It was not possible for me to a pull a ‘wheelie,' Your Worship. I had a full gas of tank!”“Gas of Tank” embodies, for Todd, all the surreal, upside-down, unbelievable, description-defying experiences police face daily.Written by Matt St AmandFreelance writer: Writer / Videographer. @wickedmanatee www.gallaghersmash.com You, Me, and the Pre (2006) Sledge-O-Matic Though it varies from performance to performance, Gallagher will usually end each of his shows with his signature sledge-o-matic routine. It traditionally begins with the following preamble: "Ladies and gentlemen! I did not come here tonight just to make you laugh. I came here to sell you something and I want you to pay particular attention! The amazing Master Tool Corporation, a subsidiary of Fly-By-Night Industries, has entrusted who? Me! To show you! The handiest and the dandiest kitchen tool you've ever seen. And don't you wanna know how it works!? Well first you get out an ordinary apple. You place the apple between the patented pans. Then you reach for the tool that is not a slicer, is not a dicer, is not chopper in a hopper! What in the hell could it possibly be?! The Sledge-O-Matic!" Gallagher would then produce a large, usually wooden, mallet, roughly the size of a sledgehammer, and smash it down onto the apples, hurling chunks of produce into the audience. People in the first several rows are usually prepared with tarps and raincoats and many comedy clubs also take great measures to cover up and protect their interiors with tarps and plastic sheeting.   Audience injuries   Gallagher signs head of a fan Given the messy nature of his shows, on some occasions audience members have sustained injuries during Gallagher's performances. At a show at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano on September 29, 1990, a woman in the audience was struck on the head by a heavy plush penguin that had a fire extinguisher inside it. She later sued the comedian for $13,000 in medical bills, $20,000 in lost wages and punitive damages reportedly in excess of $100,000. The case went to trial in 1993, with the jury ultimately siding with Gallagher, following a raucous trial where Gallagher himself took the stand and reportedly got as many laughs as he would during one of his shows. The presiding judge, William Froeberg, later said "... in seven years on the bench, I've seen a lot of characters, but none so theatrical...It was entertaining. It certainly wasn't boring."[13] At a show at the Washington County Fair in Hillsboro, Oregon, on July 8, 2010, a woman rushed the stage, slipped on debris, and was taken to the hospital for her injuries.   Running for Governor (as an independent) in the 2003 California gubernatorial recall election, Gallagher finished 16th out of 135 candidates with 5,466 votes.   Is cum Halal?   i want to eat cum but i also want to praise Allah and be respectful towards him any suggestions or loopholes if it isn't ok thanks Don't say boob without the last b. Bursting onto the So, this young band surprised audiences with hit-worthy original rock songs combined with a high-energy stage performance, complete with headbanging and crowd interaction. Catchy lyrics infused with a message of individualism spanned generations and touch minds and hearts, inspiring listeners to think on greater things. The band of teenagers, fueled by nothing more than their love for music and their desire to exercise their passion for art, has soared to unprecedented heights in progress and musicianship. Their face-melting performances have been witnessed at such iconic venues as The Whisky A Go-Go, The House of Blues Anaheim, The Orange County Fair, The Coach House, M15, Silverlake Lounge, The Yost Theater, and Chain Reaction. They are Moxy and The Influence. They will influence you. They will rock you. They will quicken your pulse and awaken your soul. They might just melt your face, but it will be a great and glorious death. AWARDS & ACCOLADES (for a complete list of awards, visit the "press/news" tab) Moxy and The Influence received an early industry nod before their first gig with an HMMA (Hollywood Music in Media Award) nomination in 2013 and an OC Music Awards nomination in early 2014. On December 31, 2013, the band was notified that they had won a $100,000 fully-produced music video from BigAndFamous.com. That video (ME4ME) was released in summer 2014. Their next music video for the hit single, ALIVE, was directed by C.G. Ryche and released in early 2015. Moxy and The Influence received the HMMA award for the 2014 Rock Song of the Year for their song Vampire Valentine, won an Indie Battle Of The Bands competition shortly after their 1-year anniversary, and was named on the Music Connection Magazine's annual Hot 100 Live Unsigned Artists list. Their song, Alive, was nominated for another HMMA award in 2015. They have been played on dozens of online and FM radio broadcasts all over the world and are swiftly gaining momentum in the local and national music scene. In June of 2015 they headlined the nine-state BREATHE SCREAM SURVIVE Tour on the West Coast/Midwest of the US. Looking forward to 2016, expect to see a new EP and music video, two performances at Rocklahoma, an appearance on 95.5 KLOS (Los Angeles), and several summer mini-tours on the West Coast. http://www.moxyandtheinfluence.com/ @addtomyplaylistpodcast on all social platforms https://truemediasolutions.ca/add-to-my-playlist podcast presented by True Media Solutions

In this episode of Delphine's Circle, we have none other than the Laguna Beach Legend himself Nick Hernandez! An innovator who pioneered competitive skim boarding as a teen, and went on to bring rock and roll with a reggae twist to the musical forefront, Nick is a talent onto his own who brings wisdom of the heart and lessons of integrity to this interview setting. Both a cherished member of the Laguna Beach community, and a dear friend, we are so happy to present this gentleman on In the Circle, and stay tuned till the end for a second performance from this beautiful soul!Common Sense is the first of Nick's bands to go really big. It's still going strong, but in its most prolific years the band sold more than 50,000 albums, with “Psychedelic Surf Groove”, and 10,000 with “State of the Nation, Now and Then”. A couple of his songs have made it to Hollywood. “Never Give Up” is a big song that made it into the movie, Speed Two, and “In Your Eyes” was in the Kingpin movie, which Nick says has got a cult following.Recently Nick recorded music with Wyland as a benefit following the Gulf oil spill disaster, a trio of albums called Blues Planet I-III. And this past winter he played with noted Hawaiian musician, Willie K in his Maui music festival along with the likes of Steven Tyler, Mick Fleetwood, and Taj Mahal.Altogether with his bands Common Sense, Nick-I, and The 133 Band, he's made 12 albums. “I like it, but I don't do enough recording,” Nick said. “I'm mostly a live artist.”There's always a crowd on Fridays at Mozambique catching Nick live with his band, Nick-I & A.D.D., and other live gigs at places such as the Coach House, the Belly Up, and the OC Fair as well as special events and corporate gigs. “You always have a dream as an artist,” he muses. “Now my dream is that The 133 Band will do the film festival circuit.” Sound like a lot of balls to juggle in the air? Toss in Nick's co-passion for surfing, and add to that his participation in Surfers Healing and you've got one busy dude.Surfers Healing is an outreach program designed to foster joy and promote surf culture in the lives of autistic youth. Nick has served on the board of directors for 17 years. The idea is to get the kids out on the waves with the assistance of able surfers. “We want to give them one nice beautiful day at the beach, and just feel normal,” says Nick.  Surfers Healing was founded by the Paskowitz family because their son, Isaiah, struggled with “meltdowns and sensory overload”. Riding the waves with his father calmed him like nothing else. Now Surfers Healing provides wave rides for more than 4,500 participants in their surf camps every year. Their motto is, “One child. One family. One day at the beach.”“Now we've got enough sponsorship, we're not sleeping on the floor – we all get our own beds now!” said Nick. “It started out, ‘I'm gonna do this ‘cause it's the right thing to do', and then I loved it. We're helping these kids and it feels really good.”

In this episode, SpokenWeb contributor Julia Polyck-O'Neill shares an archived recording of Canadian poet Lisa Robertson with us and talks us through two interviews she recorded with Robertson. Polyck-O'Neill invites us to consider the significance of Robertson's intimate archival collections in light of the relationships between archives, memory, affect, and mortality. In examining these conceptual, material and immaterial dimensions of the archive within Robertson's personal narrative history of the Kootenay School of Writing, Polyck-O'Neill points to how creative and feminist approaches to the archive and to archival practice are exist within Robertson's practice. Polyck-O'Neill shares with us how Robertson's archives are influencing her research and the ways she approaches the topic of archives and intimacy in her work and her life more broadly.Addendum: Listening NotesNancy Shaw (1962-2007), a celebrated curator, poet, writer, and organizer, at times collaborated with Lisa Robertson and also wrote work in dialogue with Robertson's poetry. Robertson wishes to mention how greatly the absence of her good friends Shaw, Stacy Doris (d. 2012), and Peter Culley (d. 2015) has affected her. Additionally,  XEclogue was, in fact, Robertson's first book, although she published chapbooks prior; additionally, she does not think of her books as collections, as they are written as single, cohesive works. The new edition of R's Boat is titled Boat and is being published by Coach House in Spring 2022.  SpokenWeb is a monthly podcast produced by the SpokenWeb team as part of distributing the audio collected from (and created using) Canadian Literary archival recordings found at universities across Canada. While her subjects are varied, and her interests and approaches have evolved over the years, poet Penn Kemp has always understood the power of spoken word to evoke emotion, shift consciousness, and shape the world. Drawing on a syncretic blend of spiritual philosophy informed by Buddhist, Hindu, and Celtic wisdom traditions, Kemp's work is imminent and transcendent, embodied and cerebral. The words on the page produce certain effects, while the voices in the air produce others altogether. In conversation with SpokenWeb Researcher Nick Beauchesne, a clip from Kemp's performance of Trance Form at the University of Alberta (1977) is brought into conversation with more recent material from When the Heart Parts (2007) and Barbaric Cultural Practice (2017). The episode concludes with a live reading from Kemp's brand-new Pandemic Poems (2020). SpokenWeb is a monthly podcast produced by the SpokenWeb team as part of distributing the audio collected from (and created using) Canadian Literary archival recordings found at universities across Canada. This week, Louisa Holmes (aka The White Witch) returns to the show to chat about one of the most fundamental human processes:  breathing.  Like me you probably think you have got this cracked, especially as you are still alive.  But that's not exactly true.  There is a big difference between breathing to stay alive, and breathing to optimise your human and athletic performance. In this podcast you will be able to find out: The surprising percentage of the population who have dysfunctional breathing Three simple tests to determine whether you need to spend time learning to breathe effectively Why dysfunctional breathing can lead to health problems and restrict your athletic performance What happens to the body at rest, never mind exercise, when you breathe inefficiently Two breathing exercises you can do which will make a difference, in less than 10 minutes per day The Oxygen Advantage by Patrick McKeown https://www.harpercollins.com/9780062349484/the-oxygen-advantage/ Body Oxygen Level test (BOLT) http://oxygenadvantage.co.za/measure-bolt/ Videos of breathing tests: Simple breathing pattern test - https://youtu.be/_J3Va1vvW80 Pursed lip breathing exercise https://youtu.be/POnGJM2FdDc Previous podcasts with Louisa: Louisa Holmes Part 1: Full body assessment & bike fit  https://simonward.podbean.com/e/simon-ward-and-louisa-edmonston-part-1/ Louisa Holmes Part 2: How to make the most of your bike fit https://simonward.podbean.com/e/simon-ward-and-louisa-edmonston-part-2/ Full Body MOT + Bike Fit https://www.cspc.co.uk/cspcservices/mot/2541-2/ Book an appointment with Louisa at the Coach House https://www.cspc.co.uk/ For more information please go to www.SimonWardTriathlonCoach.com, or www.TheTriathlonCoach.com, or email Beth@thetriathloncoach.com.

Near the University of Toronto, Colin Marshall talks to Alana Wilcox, Editorial Director of Coach House Books and author of the novel A Grammar of Endings. They discuss the past twenty years' boom in Toronto writing; what factors, including an embarrassing mayor in the nineties, made "mythologizing our own city" possible; why Coach House prints right there on premises, "giving cultural producers access to the means of production"; the technological palimpsest of Coach House's offices; the origin of their uTOpia series, which envision the Toronto of the future and which began when "you simply didn't publish about Toronto"; the broadness of the ideas about the city that surprised her, as well as the number of its "civic nerds"; how Coach House pushes for "adventurous" writing, such a recent book on surveillance, a novel about Andy Warhol's Sleep, and Christian Bök's Eunoia; their shifting relationship over the years with the printed book; how she got interested in Toronto herself; what she shows students who turn up on field trips; her lack of worries about the future of the printed book, and how she finds readers process information differently depending on the physical medium of the text; their paper equivalent of 180-gram vinyl; how dominant bookselling chains have persisted in Canada, and the effects of that; Coach House's own books involving the city, like Maggie Helwig's blind-photographer novel Girls Fall Down and an upcoming study of the Ward, Toronto's first slum; her first novel, the second novel she put away, and what writing taught her about publishing; Coach House's "Exploded Views" series, which includes Shawn Micallef's book on all-consuming precarity The Trouble with Brunch and David Balzer's Curationism; shopping by publisher, and how she started doing it herself almost right away, acting as a consumer on her "publishing crushes"; how much of an enemy to consider Amazon; the literary figure from whom Coach House's bpNichol Lane takes its name; her lack of fascination with "CanLit"; the multiculturalism she doesn't see in Toronto; and how the city has lately tired her out.

He's been writing comics for over 10 years - and is no stranger to licensed tie-in storytelling. In 2003 he broke into the industry - literally - as a fan, submitting a GI JOE script to DEVILS DUE COMICS who was publishing the title at the time. They liked it, hired him to write the story for A G.I. Joe anthology and then gave him the main book to write a few months later. He even had a GI JOE action figure made in his likeness!   In 2006 Brandon went to work for Dynamite Comics, doing a stint on their HIGHLANDER tie-in before enjoying a very popular run on their BATTLESTAR GALLACTICA tie-in 2007.   Since then he's written for more high-profile comics publishers like IMAGE COMICS, VERTIGO and DC Comics.   In 2011 Brandon ventured into documentary filmmaking with an ambitious peak into the world of comic books and telling the stories of the people who make them. We'll talk more about that later on.   In 2012 Brandon’s work on the Graphic Novel SHOOTERS about a Post-9-11 IRAQI War veteran WON a PRISM AWARD recognizing the comic’s accurate depiction of mental illness.   Brandon is no stranger to podcasting, you can hear him DAILY on BJ SHEA'S GEEK NATION PODCAST which covers all things geeky in NEWS, TV, MOVIES, COMICS.   On JUNE 15th of 2014, based on the success of their SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN SEASON SIX title (by James Kuhoric), Dynamite revealed to BLEEDING COOL.com that they would be releasing a BIONIC WOMAN SEASON FOUR title in SEPTEMBER. Written by Brandon Jerwa, art by David T. Cabrera and a cover for issue one by Sean Chen along with a photo cover of series star Lindsay Wagner. We'll get to Chen's cover in a moment, too.   In that brief news item, Brandon is quoted saying, “If you’ve never seen the show, or haven’t read James Kuhoric’s Six Million Dollar Man comic, you’re still totally fine, longtime fans won’t be left out in the cold, though. The Bionic Woman: Season Four is a continuation of the classic TV series, so I’m definitely treating it as such in terms of continuity and thematic carry-through.”

Growing up in Rhode Island, Chris Cosentino spent his time clamming, commercial fishing, and cranking the pasta machine in his great-grandmother’s kitchen. He was raised on a cuisine particular to parts of New England where Atlantic seafood, Yankee fare and classic Italian cooking fuse into one colorful gastronomy. Creating good food was a family tradition, as Cosentino’s maternal ancestors, the Eastons, were the founders of Newport’s beloved Easton’s Sausage Company. Today, as executive chef of San Francisco’s Incanto, where he cooks in an earthy rustic Italian style, Cosentino is proving that a penchant for meats may just be hereditary. Cured, raw or roasted; traditional cut or offal, meat is his muse. Yet this meat-loving chef does not ignore produce. California is a giant garden, he says, and indeed, he can be spotted at San Francisco’s Ferry Plaza farmers market every Saturday morning, rain or shine. Cosentino’s formal education took place at Johnson and Wales. Upon graduation, he worked at Mark Miller’s Red Sage in Washington, DC. After Red Sage, Cosentino worked at Kinkead’s before moving to San Francisco to work under Traci des Jardins at Rubicon. He was then tapped by Drew Nieporent to open The Coach House on Martha’s Vineyard. Cosentino returned to California to work briefly at Chez Panisse, as well as the three-star Belon as sous chef, and as a chef/consultant at Michael Mina’s Aqua group, opening Nob Hill in Las Vegas. At Incanto, Cosentino makes his Executive Chef debut. He took over the helm of the one year-old restaurant in 2003, immediately garnering a three-star review from SF Chronicle’s Michael Bauer, the first of many critical accolades. Tune-in for another exciting episode with chef Chris Cosentino! This program has been sponsored by Whole Foods Market. Photo by Abby Ainsworth, acqtaste.com “When I was 14 years old, I lied and worked as a dishwasher at an IHOP. I showed up, and nine hours later, I went home. It was a big eye opener for me.” [7:09] “Know where the food comes from first, before you start a trend and change the world. That’s what Mark Miller taught me.” [23:30] — Chris Cosentino on Chef’s Story

Last summer I met with Stan Bevington in Toronto to talk about the history of the Coach House Press and some of the more collectible books that it has published over the years. In this, Part ll of our conversation, we discuss, among many other things, the influence of the Stinehour Press; the adoption, adaptation, and in some cases invention of new printing; photographic and computer technologies, and the book designs of Glenn Goluska and Gordon Robertson.

In 1965, Stan Bevington, moved to Toronto from Edmonton, rented an old coach house, installed an antique Challenge Gordon platen press and set up Coach House Press. Over the years his small publishing house introduced the world to the early works of bpNichol, Michael Ondaatje, Margaret Atwood, George Bowering, Frank Davey, Ann-Marie MacDonald, Anne Michaels and many other important Canadian writers. Known for its experimental production techniques and innovative designs, Coach House has published more than 500 titles of its own since 1965, and printed thousands more for other presses, libraries and art galleries. In addition to employing some of Canada's greatest type and book designers, Bevington also kept Coach House at the forefront of  new printing and computer technology advancements, collaborating with artists, programmers and e–book designers. He has lectured at York University and the Rochester Visual Studies Workshop, at the Banff Publishing workshop and Radcliffe at Harvard, and has received numerous grants, prizes, honourary degrees and life time achievement awards for his work in publishing and the Arts. We met in Toronto, outside the Coach House premises, to talk about the history of the Press, and, more specifically, about those books, among the many it has published, that might be of greatest interest to the collector.
