In this episode Adam is joined by special guests Chris Coplien from the Retro Hangover Podcast, and Ozzy Garcia (a Cuban). We took on Squaresoft's 1999 forgotten PS1 JRPG: Threads of Fate... or Dewprism if you're a purist like Chris. Was the game worth it? Is there a good reason it was forgotten? Tune in to find out!

We are joined by blogger of the year Dia Lacina who was willing to go down with the ship as we break format for a trio of games that we only knew of probably bad games nobody actually played. That's right, we took all our RPG expertise and applied it to the strange trilogy of Tokyo RPG Factory games! Em froze their ass off in I am Setsuna, Dia remembered she could be doing anything else in Lost Sphear, and Jackson went hya hya hya about a million times in Oninaki. Maybe the games are bad, but the conversation was a fruitful exploration of what it is that makes the JRPG form work for us at all.Send us questions about our game clubs, other games, or gaming in general to abnormalmappingpodcast@gmail.com!If you would like to support us please visit patreon.com/abnormalmapping for exclusive podcasts, writing, and even opportunities to be on an episode as a guest! This week, Hat & Stan discuss the RPGs shown at Sony's recent State of Play. Specifically, is Genshin Impact a Breath of the Wild clone, or does it have an identity of it's own? Did God Fall make it's best appearance at this presentation, or did this distract some of the excitement that was felt for this PS5 exclusive. Will TemTem capture the hearts and minds of disenfranchised Pokemon fans, or will it merely drift away as yet another Pokemon clone? Later, they chat about the state of affairs at Tokyo RPG Factory, and what it's 1.4 million dollar loss means for the future. Tokyo RPG Factory takes its third crack at making a successful RPG. Is Oninaki the game that finally puts them over the top? Nadia shares her review! Plus, our impressions of the Dragon Quest 11 demo on Switch, and a big ol mailbag in which we talk about RPG tragedies, the rare SSI Gold Box game on Genesis, and much more.
Another wild NOFODcast recorded in our secret backup lair. Richard, Cesar and Michael discuss News, their current Games Played, and most importantly, rank the Gears of War games. In News, EA outlines their reasoning for the lack of Nintendo Switch ports, Sony passes a key PS4 sales milestone and Fortnite master Ninja has a new streaming platform partnership. A Call of Duty: Modern Warfare multiplayer showcase highlights upcoming game modes, SNK teases new hardware and the ChinaJoy conference brings us lots of announcements, including a Chinese-exclusive Rabbids title. Finally, the guys discuss August's "free" offerings from the PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live subscriptions. In Games Played, Michael wraps up Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, and Sony's exclusive detective-sim Judgement. He has early impressions of Wolfenstein: Youngblood, and advises on the definitive way to play Doom 3. Richard continues the Star Wars-esque plot of Final Fantasy XII, and hooks up the original Wii console for some Super Mario Galaxy. He and Cesar have played Cesar's imported copy of GOTY candidate Tokyo Olympic Games 2020, and give an overview of it's CD Projekt Red inspired character creator. Cesar provides updates on his ongoing games, and a glimpse into Tokyo RPG Factory's Lost Sphear. We are now on major podcast streaming services!! Sony-owned Media Molecule is hiring for a most unusual task: The studio is seeking small dev teams to create experiences inside the Early Access version of its PS4 exclusive Dreams. And they're willing to pay. The question, of course, is what that says about the state of Sony's absurdly long-in-development sandbox, and if we're now officially entering Insane Territory. Is there something here we simply cannot see? We discuss. Plus: PS4's next firmware update is officially in beta, Dying Light 2 is crossing generations, Remedy's Control has gone gold, and Ready at Dawn's recent office move suggests some interesting behind-the-scenes happenings. And yes... yes! Of course we let you, the listener, in on the action, with inquiries about the popularity of Mario Maker 2 (and how Sony can replicate its success), Tokyo RPG Factory's quiet existence, the possible physical size of the PlayStation 5, and the likelihood of Red Dead Redemption 2 single player DLC. So wake up, sit up straight, and listen up closely. You can sleep once we're done. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

At the center of any enterprise is money, and the gaming industry is no different. But with the recent layoff of a staggering 800 people at gigantic (and profitable) publisher Activision Blizzard, questions are starting to be raised about the financial viability of game development as-is, and the treatment of the thousands of talented men and women that make the games we love. Se, we dive head-first into the subject. There's also plenty of news to get through. A high-ranking Sony executive has spoken openly and candidly about PlayStation 3's struggles. Is that a good sign for PlayStation 5? Also: Hollow Knight's getting a sequel, Tokyo RPG Factory's next game has been revealed, The Division 2's open beta is inbound, and both Catherine: Full Body and Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night have much more release clarity for we, the western gamer. As usual, we round things out with your letters, including a chat about hunting games, the longterm viability of the Battle Royale market, the future of EA's NCAA Football series, and violent video games' relationship to real world violence. 2:29:24 - Afsluiting Muziek: - Blaster Master (NES) - Gremlins 2 (NES) - Batman (NES)

Nintendo promised new ways to play the Switch, and this week they proved it with Nintendo Labo. Patrick and Mark definitely didn’t see this one coming, but they’re sort of delighted by it? Plus, Tokyo RPG Factory’s new game Lost Sphear is coming out, and the guys discuss what they want out of a throwback title. (Hint: maybe it’s not menu-based combat… but maybe it is?)
Far Cry 5 really is in modern-day Montana, Lost Sphear is the next product rolling off the conveyor belt of the Tokyo RPG Factory, and Bethesda and Ubisoft have some crucially imperative press conferences coming up.
