I am joined by Mark Benis, who has composed the musical soundtrack for the point and click adventure game Rosewater, set in the wild west and released in 2024. Mark has also worked on the soundtrack for Lamplight City with others credits for titles including Wolfenstein: Youngblood. In this podcast, we discuss his joy of retro chip-tune music of retro gaming platforms including the Nintendo Game Boy, which has inspired his journey creativity to now write musical soundtracks for modern gaming titles. Topics include: Mark Benis’ opportunity to become a game composer Childhood love of Pokémon Red/Blue music led to a lifelong curiosity about chip music The beauty of 8-bit music to orchestral and back again Using Wwyse and FMOD as audio middleware to replace line-by-line coding Mark’s early days and the audio equipment he used The financial barrier of the many professional audio sample libraries No woodwinds in the game Lamplight City inspiring creativity by limitation How hardware MIDI modules (Roland MT-32, Sound Canvas etc) have been replaced with software music audio libraries Mark’s go to piano performances to loosen his fingers and inspire his thoughts Mark’s computer and desk setup for music composition What is Rosewater and the musical brief you were given Avoiding the typical wild west country style music How much of the original work made it into the game soundtrack? How much of the artwork and game direction did Mark see before composing the tracks? Timing introductions to the music, or arranging the music to the intro? Hearing the voice acting dialogue for the first time reactions Mixing virtual instruments with live music players Choral music creation for the game Lamplight City recorded in a church with a real choir Mark’s future projects Collaborating on musical projects and avoiding arguments Featured music within the podcast, kindly provided with permission by Mark Benis… 7-43 to Rosewater Once Upon a Time in Western Vespuccia Night Walk The Showdown So Long, Partner Flor Silvestre by Christiane Ramirez You can download the full Rosewater Soundtrack on Mark Benis’ Bandcamp page. Take a spin with this spin-off of the franchise that spawned a genre! The Xbox Game Pass “Surprise Me” button has taken the reins once again, and this time it has directed our dynamic duo to tackle a first-person shooter developed by MachineGames and Arkane Studios. It seems only fair for expectations to run a bit high when you consider that the original Wolfenstein effectively created the first-person shooter genre. That said, this much more recent title has already been out for a few years and the reviews are decidedly mixed. With the option to play the entire game co-op as the twin daughters of B.J. Blazkowicz or go solo with an AI companion, what will our hosts decide to do? Will that choice ultimately have a major impact on their final decision when the hour is up? Debra Wilson is probably best known for her eight seasons on the former Fox late night sketch comedy series, MADtv (1995-2003). She began her career in New York City theater, where she was born and raised and attended the High School of Performing Arts. With numerous guest star appearances in both network comedy and drama series' and a score of independent films, she continues to concentrate her craft in the realm of voice over and motion capture; with her first motion capture project, as the prototype model for ‘Ney'tiri,' played by Zoe Saldana, in James Cameron's AVATAR. Voice over work began much earlier for Wilson, as a narrator for quite a few E! Entertainment celebrity specials, and then solidly into everything else, from animation for television and film, ADR & looping, network announcing, radio commercials, books on tape, theme park attractions, to a wide range of video games. Debra has worked on well over sixty video games to date, some of which include six different World of Warcraft games and Blizzard's current games, Hearthstone On Line and Orbis, plus God of War, Final Fantasy XV, Mafia III, Gears of War 4, The Walking Dead: The Final Season, and several Call of Duty games, and most recently, WORLD of WARCRAFT: The Battle For Azeroth, Ratchet and Clank: A Rift Apart, and DESTINY 2: The Witch Queen. Motion capture credits include The Mirror's Edge: Catalyst, Wolfenstein: The New Colossus, Wolfenstein: Young Blood, Far Cry: Primal, STAR WARS JEDI: Fallen Order, Days Gone, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, God Of War, and Just Cause 4. TV voice over credits include the Announcer on NBC's The Weakest Link, hosted by Jane Lynch, Curious George on PBS, The Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad, The Cleveland Show, The Boondocks, All Hail King Julien on NETFLIX, Mao Mao and the Heroes of Pure Heart on The Cartoon Network, and a few new top secret projects in television animation and video games. She also voices “Grandma Shark”, on the Nickelodeon series, Baby Shark's Big Show, and reoccurs as Terra Snapdragon on Disney's Owl House. In this episode you will learn: What your relationship to your art should look like. How to collaborate and take chances in the booth as a voiceover actor. Debra's journey that stripped away everything (even her hair) to reemerge as a the highest version of herself. How spirituality and connection to your true source can help you overcome the anxiety that comes with "trying to give them what they want." What we were put her on this earth (in the form of storytellers) to do. Debra is a very private person and rarely does interviews, so this was a treat. Tom's a big production guy, so Peter Gabriel's tight instrumentation and arrangements on “So” make it a really pivotal album for him. “Houses of the Holy” isn't Led Zeppelin's most-played album, but it's one of their funkiest. Matt fell in love with its bigness and groove, so it's a great complement to Peter Gabriel's pop sensibilities. Sam Hughes speaks with composer Tom Salta, about his recent work on Wolfenstein: Young Blood, his love for the 80's (including his podcast), Twitch streaming the PUBG theme and much more! “I truly enjoyed creating a unique and signature early ‘80s post-punk aesthetic for the latest entry in this iconic series, using sound sources, synths, samplers and effects only available in the early ‘80s. Needless to say, I had an absolute blast. Another bonus was having the opportunity to do a remake of the Joy Division song “A Means to an End” (featured in the ending credits) performed by the Swedish hard rock group The Guilt. They were amazing and it was an honor to produce them.” ASCAP winning and MTV VMA nominated composer Tom Salta is one of the most versatile and prolific music artists/producers working in film, television, advertising and video games. Renowned for crafting emotionally engaging soundtracks for multimedia, Salta has received widespread industry acclaim for his world-class produced hybrid scores featured in film, television and video games such as Machine Games' WOLFENSTEIN : Youngblood & Cyberpilot, Microsoft's iconic HALO series (G.A.N.G. Best Original Soundtrack Award), Ubisoft's PRINCE OF PERSIA: The Forgotten Sands and RED STEEL (IGN Award for Best Original Score), Tom Clancy's GHOST RECON and H.A.W.X series, as well as the epic theme music for the record-breaking online multiplayer game PLAYERUNKNOWN's BATTLEGROUNDS, which has sold in excess of 50 million units with over 400 million players. This week's podcast was inspired by the upcoming Wolfenstein: Youngblood with the inherent co-op being a big selling point of the game.  We intended to talk about it at length, but got slightly sidetracked by a couple of things: 1.) Ali's PC decided to update itself and not be available for recording; and 2.) Andy couldn't stay for the full length of the podcast.  At least this meant that we could try out the drop-in/drop-out podcasting features we patched in a few weeks ago.  Heading off on a tangent we talk about the Far Cry series (and New Dawn in particular), LEGO games, Battlefield, MMO's and a whole lot more.  There's even a mention of Wolfenstein: Cyberpilot too... but that's nothing to do with co-op gaming. Listen to this episode of the Codec Moments Podcast to hear all about: What we think about co-op gaming How Wolfenstein: Youngblood might use the co-op mechanic What Andy's daughter thinks 80's dancers are If Ali actually manages to stop Windows from killing his machine and manages to join in The Far Cry series... at length Ghost Recon's tactical play Co-op in racing games and more!
