Trains. It was an outrageous caper to end all capers: stealing millions from a train (and maybe a little of the train, too). What could go wrong? Well, a lot. But a fair bit also went right. Trains. And thanks to all that, we have a dope television theme song. Makes sense, don't it? And trains. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Clear the tracks because the Gutter Boys train is leaving the station! The boys are back with another interview from the Hocking Hills Cartoonist Retreat and this time it's none other than long time friend of the show Blake "The Uncle King" Sims. Based out of Bowling Green, Kentucky, Blake is a true comics soldier who's been cranking out pages since high school and doesn't show signs of letting up any time soon. His last book, Logor, was one of our top picks from last year and his upcoming book, Sicko Hunter, is shaping up to be another contender for 2021. We talk about his long love for comics, his early influences, and what he's hoping to accomplish in the near future. We also sprinkled in some wrestling talk because of course Blake is also a wrestling fan and it would've been disingenuous to not bring it up. If you want to check out more of Blake's work or stay updated on what he's up to, give him a follow on Twitter and Instagram @blakersims. Questions? Comments? Suggestions? As we creep up on the end of 2019, Kevin and Kornflake relax and look back on the whole stupid year. We review our Flopcast segments (Capes or Apes!) and guests (Train Talk with Ed!), as well as concerts (Taylor Dayne! TAYLOR DAYNE!), conventions (hey, Arisia returns next month!), and lots more. Plus: National Whatever Day, a new novel from Matthew Dicks, the return of the Kornflake Book Club, a very Tootie Christmas movie, a very Boston lobster heist, and our very exciting New Year's Resolutions. And now we must prepare for Flopcast episode 400. By napping, mostly.
This week we're joined again by Ed, longtime friend of The Flopcast, Sponge Awareness Foundation keyboardist, and train expert from the Wiscasset, Waterville and Farmington Railway Museum! So yeah, that means more nerdy train talk! Learn the shocking truth behind the trains in pop culture classics like Stand By Me, Polar Express, Dumbo, School House Rock, and lots more. Does anyone know what happened to the train from Silver Spoons? (The shocking answer: No.) Can you ride a Boston train today that Next Karate Kid star Hilary Swank climbed on top of 25 years ago? (The shocking answer: Yes.) And which classic rock stars are also huge train geeks? (The shocking answer: Just about all of them, apparently.) All this plus plenty of immature giggling about "hump yards"! (It's a train thing.) So, you know, all aboard. You don't have to slip into a fancy train conductor uniform like Ed did... but it would be nice.
This week Kevin and Kornflake are joined by special guest Ed, from The Sponge Awareness Foundation! But Ed is not just the other half of Kevin's old comedy band. Ed is also a train expert, and today we're talking trains. HEY, WAIT, COME BACK. This is The Flopcast, so specifically we're talking about trains from old movies, TV shows, and cartoons! Anyone else remember the short-lived 1979 show Supertrain? (It was Love Boat on a train, essentially. We miss it terribly.) Can you name the movies that had Jack Lemmon and Jon Cryer racing through Boston's South Station, just like Kevin and Ed did when being chased by screaming Sponge Awareness fans? Want even more details about that train scene in our favorite obscure summer camp show, High Feather? Ed has tracked down some fascinating facts about all this and much more. It's scary and fun. (Mostly scary. Happy Halloween.) Also: A Super Megafest preview and World Numbat Day, both of which we somehow make all about trains. Why, we might even keep the train talk going next week. You've been warned.

In this episode, Monty and Rebecca discuss the recent endorsement of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), and run an interview with former MADD National President and Texas City native, Laura Dean Mooney, who lost her husband in a drunk driving accident in 1991. In the interview, Laura discusses the importance of having multiple transportation options between cities and the dangers of drunk and distracted driving – especially on I-45 between Dallas and Houston, which consistently ranks as one of the deadliest in the U.S. and has scored in the top in both DUI-related crashes and fatal nighttime incidents. The Texas high-speed train would offer residents and large numbers of out of town visitors a safer, faster travel alternative by significantly decreasing accidents due to drunk, drowsy or distracted driving. This will allow a safer and more-efficient way for Texans to get to and from the Brazos Valley for large-scale events in and around the area. On the Texas high-speed train, you can avoid I-45 entirely and have peace of mind knowing that your friends and family will be safe traveling on a system that has a spotless 50+ year safety record. And that’s a win for everyone.
This week on Train Talk, Project Delivery Director Bill Tucker stops by the set to talk about what it takes to deliver on such a massive project. Previously, Bill served as Bechtel's delivery director for the central section of the Crossrail project, where he was responsible for leading the delivery organization within the client’s program management team.
In this episode of Train Talk, Rebecca and Monty continue their chat with Brady Redwine who is technically the Vice President of Real Estate for Texas Central, but is actually another aspiring bearded podcast star and stand-up comedian. When we built out Texas Central’s Houston office, overlooking beautiful downtown Houston, we knew the space deserved something distinct, something with rich local flavor that lived up to our commitment to promote local business and culture. In this episode, Monty and Rebecca unveil a giant wall-sized mural of the high-speed train that now hangs in Texas Central’s Houston office. The mural was created by Gonzo247, a native Houstonian and wildly popular urban graffiti artist, who tags areas of the city with his hometown style, like the famed “Houston is Inspired” mural, near Market Square Park in downtown Houston. For this undertaking, Gonzo shows his own unique passion for the high-speed train project, drawing inspiration from the city of Houston, the music he grew up listening to, and memories of the graffiti-tagged trains that peppered his youth. “Gonzo continues to be an artistic powerhouse in Houston, beautifully transforming public walls across the city into vibrant attractions that make Houston a more colorful place to live,” said Christine West, Cultural Programs Manager for Houstonfirst. “His passion for this city, and his commitment to the artistic community has generated a safe space for hundreds of street artists to create new works, and to be seen.” This episode also includes the release of a short behind-the-scenes video that documents the making of the mural, complete with interviews with Gonzo and a sneak peek into his workspace. Spencer Whelan stops by the studio to talk about his filming of the mural, the significance of Gonzo’s work, and how he was able to translate the idea of this transformational project into art in the city whose seal contains a train and whose motto is “where seventeen railroads meet the sea”. Watch the video here: Follow Gonzo at @Gonzo247 on Instagram to see more of his work and experience more of Houston.
This week on Train Talk, Monty and Rebecca chat with Travis Kelly, the Vice President of Stakeholder Engagement for Texas Central and a high-speed train project day-oner. In this video, Travis opens up about his childhood growing up in Waxahachie, his darkest fears and hopes and dreams – but mostly the three of them just geek out over trains. Coincidentally, they all three love working for a railroad company building the first high-speed train project in Texas and the US! Also: Did you know Travis is a very prestigious national award winner? Are tears shed? Did the shocking darkest fears segment make the final cut? And, what does a “Vice President of Stakeholder Engagement” do anyway? Answers to those questions and more are just a click away. #YallAboard
