Living in a city like New York is a constant exercise in seeing the things that you love go away. And for independent culture fans in the city, one of the most devastating losses of this century was that of Kim's Video, a hybrid video and record store with a flagship location on Saint Marks Place in the East Village and clerks who were both revered and feared for their encyclopedic knowledge of film and music. Kim's Video holds a special place in Emilie's heart — she worked her first job out of high school there. And for many decades, it was home to one of the largest and most comprehensive video rental collections in the world, with a wealth of cinematic obscurities and hard-to-find gems that earned it a cult following among both local cinephiles and art-house legends like Quentin Tarantino, Chloë Sevigny, Jean-Luc Godard, and the Coen brothers. So when the shop's enigmatic impresario, Mr. Kim, announced that Kim's Video was closing up shop, and it came out that the store's 55,000-work collection had ended up in a small Italian town called Salemi, a lot of people were understandably very upset and confused. Lucky for us, two filmmakers and Kim's Video devotees — David Redmon and Ashley Sabin — decided to track down the collection. But when they arrived in Salemi and discovered the archives in a state of disarray, they found themselves in the middle of a cross-continental mystery that took them from Sicily, to South Korea, to Mr. Kim's New Jersey home, and that ran much deeper than a simple case of streaming supplanting your local video rental place. That story, and the resulting fate of the Kim's Video collection, are captured in David and Ashley's fascinating and often baffling feature documentary, Kim's Video. Today, David joins us to talk about the story of Kim's Video and Yong-man Kim, who famously started selling videos out of a dry cleaning shop after emigrating to New York from South Korea. We also explore the particular era in underground culture, and in the history of the East Village, of which Kim's was such an important part; what we lose when our consumption of media loses its connection to physical objects; and whether the current interest in the Kim's collection, which the directors helped return to its current location at Alamo Drafthouse in Downtown Manhattan, is symptomatic of a larger yearning for a more tangible experience of culture.PS. Later this month, we'll be releasing a special subscriber-only bonus episode where Emilie reads an essay she wrote on her experiences working as a clerk. Sign up for a paid subscription to get it straight to your inbox.Watch Kim's Video on Apple TV or Prime Video.Follow Kim's Video (the film) on Instagram.Follow Kim's Video (the collection) on Instagram.Check out more of David and Ashley's work at Carnivalesque Films. New city data shows New Yorkers are more likely to have been killed by a driver than a gunman this year, with 127 people killed by drivers since January. Also, New York Philharmonic President and CEO Gary Gintsling resigned on Thursday after just one year on the job. And in Queens, Rockaway Beach reopens Friday after shark sightings forced authorities to close a stretch on Thursday. Plus, Beth Israel Hospital in Downtown Manhattan is not closing this week despite initial plans to shut down by July 12. The hospital is serving a fraction of its former patient load, and officials say they still hope to close soon. WNYC's Michael Hill speaks with health care reporter Caroline Lewis to explain the situation. Finally, as Democrats clash over President Biden's candidacy, WNYC's Brigid Bergin talks to retired New York Democrats about how they made the decision to relinquish power.
NEW YORK (ITALPRESS) - "In galera!".

Avant-garde cinema emerged in direct conversation with the film criticism that contextualized, championed, and critiqued it. Writing about work that is premised on defying formulaic intelligibility, and which invites us to reach beyond language to other modes of interpretation, can be both challenging and thrilling—requiring the critic to draw on a deep historical knowledge and a finely-tuned sensory awareness. And reading such criticism can be at once an eye-opening entryway into better appreciating experimental cinema, and its own creative encounter with connections across image and thought. Last Thursday, Film Comment Editors Clinton Krute and Devika Girish sat down with Amy Taubin, Genevieve Yue, and Ayanna Dozier, some of the best critics of the avant-garde working today, to discuss the history of the craft, the nitty-gritty of this niche beat, what good writing on avant-garde cinema looks and sounds like, and what to even call the genre—avant-garde? Experimental? The other cinema? The talk took place at DCTV's Firehouse Cinema in Downtown Manhattan as part of this year's edition of Prismatic Ground, an exemplary and boundary-pushing festival dedicated to experimental documentary. Throughout the inspired conversation, the group referred to a few exemplary passages written by the esteemed panelists.

SERIES 2 EPISODE 162: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Stochastic threat number one million. Trump returns to his propaganda channel to insist that his thugs should be, quoting his online post, “allowed to protest at the front steps of Courthouses, all over the country” rather than be “rudely and systematically shut down and ushered off to far away ‘holding areas' essentially denying them their constitutional rights.” He tells them “Rally behind MAGA. Save our country. The only thing you have to fear is fear itself.” When THAT stochastic call to lay siege to federal buildings didn't work (why does that sound SO familiar?) Trump tried what he thinks is smooth and subtle. “The Palestinian Protests at Columbia University have closed the college down. But the area surrounding the Courthouse in Downtown Manhattan, is closed up like a drum, with New York City's Finest (Police) all over the place. Why not send some to Columbia… Republicans want the right to protest in front of the courthouse like everyone else.” Again. Seems oddly familiar. Reduce law enforcement around an area Trump wants to see sacked by gangs and militias and morons ready to spring him or hang a Vice President or, who knows, kill a judge. He forgot to note “will be wild.” Justice Juan Merchan There is little for Justice Juan Merchan to DO about this latest threat other than to encourage the city and the state of New York to have tanks ready because frankly if Trump terrorist gangs again rise up against the government as he had them do on January 6th the only way the point is going to be made clear is if it ends with the New York Department of Sanitation having to clean them up with brooms and hoses and garbage trucks. But with Trump following yesterday's half-day in court ending with more violations of the gag order, Merchan can at least regain control of this mess by - if not jailing Trump at today's gag order hearing - at least saying: if you do it again I will revoke your jail and send you to Rikers Island. We have to grasp this nettle eventually, let's do it now. In the long term, the ACTUAL Trump Legal headline may have come not from New York but Florida where witness exhibits in the Trump Espionage case reveal that the feds have a small coterie of witnesses close to Trump including an unidentified Person 16, clearly a senior Trump aide but not in the innermost circle, who revealed nothing less than the fact that Trump's “people” told his valet and co-defendant Walt Nauta not to worry about the stolen documents case, that it's not going anywhere, yet even if he were to, say, get charged with lying to the FBI, Trump will pardon him after he regains power. B-Block (26:33) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: The man Nate Silver once thought was a top-five candidate to be the next Democratic presidential nominee, Eric Adams, is down to 16% support for re-election as mayor of New York. Kevin McCarthy is surprised to learn his claim Hillary Clinton never conceded is a lie. And ESPN's policy - no, you can't be a sportscaster on one station and an advocate for a presidential candidate on another - was right. I know: I helped to author it because the day when you (or I) could is long gone. So why is today's ESPN letting Stephen A. Smith do it? Why is he campaigning for Trump on Fox News? ESPN must silence him - or fire him. C-Block (37:32) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: So I once had an agent named Art Kaminsky who at the same time he was negotiating to extend my deal at KCBS in Los Angeles was also sending his other clients in for the job. And he ordered his partner Lou Oppenheim to NOT tell me as he literally walked out of the meeting at which KCBS told him whether or not I was staying. This all ends with them serving me with papers hours before my first SportsCenter, 32 years ago this month!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Merry Christmas? Bah, humbug! "Elf" is widely beloved, and considered by many to be a modern Christmas classic, but Ev doesn't get the hype, and thinks that it's actually... *gulp* a BAD movie. Scoop yourself up a large serving of figgy pudding and let's get into Jon Favreau's "Elf," the 2003 Christmas comedy starring Will Ferrell, James Caan, Ed Asner, Mary Steenburgen, and Zooey Deschanel. 00:00 - Intro / Ev is Scrooge 02:43 - Keith has fond memories of this film 03:39 - This film is pretty universally beloved, not by Ev though 06:17 - Just because you love something, that doesn't make it good 07:17 - Will Ferrell's performance and the film's quotability are two reasons people love it 08:46 - The premise is great and the first act is solid 09:47 - Some of Ev's major beefs 11:54 - Why is Buddy so developmentally immature? 14:40 - And why is Zooey's character into that? 17:57 - James Caan's rapid change of heart 21:55 - So is Buddy... a superhuman...? 25:32 - This movie is just a dry run for "Stepbrothers" 26:00 - Is Will Ferrell committed to the bit or just not doing a great job? 29:47 - Bob Newhart RULES 30:38 - The messy ending and the pointless antagonism of the Central Park Rangers 35:00 - Santa: "People can't see me or Christmas will be ruined!!" Also Santa: *flies over a huge crowd in Downtown Manhattan* 39:05 - The missing pages from the children's book is a great metaphor for studio interference 41:52 - Will Ferrell vs. Jon Favreau (and Faizon Love... and James Caan... and...) 43:44 - Matt Walsh has a great mouth 45:24 - Faizon Love appreciation 46:28 - Where does this film fall on the list of Christmas movies?? Hi gang. You ever notice how every generation, in every big city, seems to have a moment when the scene that defined them — the music venues, artists' lofts, dive bars, and misfit inhabitants that collectively forged a cultural zeitgeist — is declared dead? Think: The closure of CBGB in Manhattan, the arrival of Erewhon in Silver Lake, the memeification of Berghain in Berlin. The phenomenon raises some interesting questions: Which came first, the predatory hand of late capitalism, or the generation aging into acquiescence? Are these collapses inevitable, and if so, are they truly as dire as people say they are?So today, we're talking about scenes — how they start, the conditions that make them possible, and why, to the chagrin of so many successive generations of musicians and music fans, they inevitably all come to an end. Our guest, Jesse Rifkin, actually studies this stuff for a living: He's the founder of Walk on the Wild Side Tours NYC, a company that gives walking tours chronicling how different New York City neighborhoods — and factors like cheap rent, geographical proximity, and changing residential and nightlife laws — gave rise to era-defining music scenes like punk, post-punk, hip-hop, disco, and ‘90s and ‘00s indie rock. Of course, he also explores how those scenes helped fuel the process of gentrification that would eventually lead to their own undoing — and what arises, or doesn't arise, in their aftermath. His new book, This Must Be the Place: Music, Community, and Vanished Spaces in New York City (out July 11 via HarperCollins) examines how that story played out in Downtown Manhattan and North Brooklyn over a 60-year period where we see this process play out over and over again. It starts with the 1960s West Village folk scene (à la Bob Dylan and Buffy Sainte Marie playing at packed coffee houses in an area of the city that is now pretty much synonymous with NYU and expensive gyms). And it ends with the 2010s Williamsburg Brooklyn scene, where our millennial-aged listeners remember frequenting venues like Death by Audio and 285 Kent. (Emilie sure does — it was her life for a while.) In his work as an NYC music historian, Jesse noticed a pattern: New Yorkers are always complaining that the city is “over,” and if you ask them when it “ended,” they usually say that happened around the time they hit 35 or 37, precisely at the moment when most of us get a bit tired of going out to parties every night. The book, he says, is an attempt to reframe our understanding of scenes as bygone golden ages made possible by once-in-a-generation artistic geniuses. He wants us to understand that scenes are a product of the specific historical and geographical circumstances in which they arise — and, even more importantly, that of ordinary people figuring out how to tap into the unique opportunities those circumstances afford. He joins us to discuss the geographical history of downtown NYC music, how the internet has transformed how scenes form and broadcast themselves to the world, and what the new downtown scene, centered around a couple blocks in Chinatown, tells us about the moment in New York history — and perhaps culture at large — that we're living through now. Before coffee, Nigel Price of Drip Coffee Makers had a career in finance, working for a firm in Downtown Manhattan. But eventually, he decided he'd had enough—and he turned to cafes as a way to break away from the life he'd built and the trajectory he no longer wanted to be on. Over a decade later, Nigel credits coffee as the beginning of his second life, giving him a chance to create connections and bond with people in a way that his prior life in finance hadn't. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 30th June. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. RENAULT EV ELECTRIC BATTERY COSTS TO REDUCE IN ELECTRIC-CAR PUSH - Renault SA aims to cut the cost of its batteries by 60% this decade as the struggling French carmaker seeks to accelerate a push into electric vehicles. Renault also plans to lower the cost of its electric motors by 30%, make them more compact and extend their range, it said Wednesday. It plans to roll out several EVs in the coming years, including a revival of the iconic and affordable ‘4L' model. - In deciding to revive the 4L model that dates back to the 1960s after also announcing plans to remake the Renault 5 into an EV, de Meo is taking his penchant for vintage a step further. The latter will cost a third less than its compact Zoe EV, the company said. - Part of Renault's push into affordable EVs is a pledge to lower battery-pack costs to less than $100 per kilowatt-hour in 2025, and below $80 per kilowatt-hour in 2030 Original Source : https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-06-30/renault-pledges-to-lower-battery-costs-in-electric-car-push ELECTRIC RENAULT 5 HEADING FOR PRODUCTION - AND IT'LL COST UNDER £20K - The Renault 5 EV Prototype is heading for production, although not until 2024, with a new platform and a target price under £20k. When Renault revealed the new electric Renault 5 Prototype at the start of the year, it was hard to believe it was just a punt at a future EV, rather than a car with production intent, as it seemed to hit a rich vein of retro-modern style and promised much. - To no one's great surprise, Renault has now announced that the Electric 5 will go into production as part of its plans to deliver 14 new models by 2025 – seven of which will be EVs – and arrive in 2024. So a bit of a wait then. When it does arrive, the Electric 5 will use new nickel, manganese and cobalt (NCM) batteries which, say Renault, will drastically reduce the overall battery cost and deliver a range of around 250 miles, 134bhp from its electric motor and be underpinned by a new CMF-BEV Platform designed for compact EVs. Original Source : https://www.carsuk.net/electric-renault-5-heading-for-production-and-itll-cost-under-20k/ RENAULT 4EVER: BRAND TEASES ADDITIONAL SMALL EV - Renault has confirmed it's developing a second B-segment EV, currently named the '4ever'. The brand revealed the first details and a reductive teaser image of the front end of the new car, showing a rectangular 'grille' and headlights complete with Renault's new badge front and centre. It's designed to invoke the classic Renault 4 – one of the brand's most iconic models – and reimagine it for the electric age. - The new 4ever will use the brand's new CMF-BEV platform – an electric version of the platform used on the Clio and Captur – which claims around 248 miles of range on a charge. Original Source : https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/renault/4-ev/ NEW RENAULT PLATFORM MAKES ELECTRIC VEHICLES ‘MORE AFFORDABLE' - It says it will also strengthen its presence in the all-electric C-segment, firstly with the All-New MéganE in 2022, while the Alpine ‘dream garage' unveiled in January will become a reality, starting in 2024. The Group aims at providing the greenest mix in the European market in 2025, with more than 65% of vehicles in the sales mix electric and electrified, and up to 90% BEVs in the Renault brand mix by 2030. - With CMF-EV and CMF-BEV platforms, the Group says it can capitalise on its 10 years' of EV experience making dedicated EV platforms along with its highly efficient CMF-B platform. For the C- and D-segment, the CMF-EV platform will represent 700,000 units at Alliance level by 2025. CMF-EV offers a range up to 360 miles (580km, WLTP). - This performance, it says, comes from the Group and Nissan's engineers working on reduced friction, weight reduction and a state-of-the-art thermal management system. - On top of these new technologies, the Group is also working on a more compact, all-in-one e-powertrain. This e-powertrain integrates the e-motor, the reducer and the power electronics (One Box Project) in a single package: enabling 45% less volume in total (equivalent to the volume of the current-generation Clio fuel tank), 30% reduction in cost of the overall powertrain (this value saving being the equivalent of the e-motor cost), and 45% reduction of wasted energy on WLTP allowing an extra EV range of up to 12 miles (20km). You can easily program your car to start and stop charging at certain times of the day or night, so it won't be that hard. - “Owners of eligible Chevrolet electric vehicles (EV) will have the opportunity to schedule their EV to charge during the free overnight hours, from midnight to 5 a.m.” Original Source : https://www.autoweek.com/news/green-cars/a36882632/gm-and-shell-free-electricity/ REVEL VOWS TO LAUNCH TESLA E-CAB SERVICE THIS SUMMER - Brooklyn e-scooter-sharing company Revel is ploughing ahead with its plans roll out an all-electric cab fleet later this summer, despite the city's Taxi and Limousine Commission blocking the move last week. “We'll be launching a little later this summer,” said Revel co-founder and chief executive officer Frank Reig at the opening of the company's electric vehicle charging ‘superhub' in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, on Tuesday, June 29. - Revel originally wanted debut a fleet of 50 Teslas colored in the company's signature blue onto the streets of Downtown Manhattan. In order to bypass the the city's cap on new for-hire vehicles, the firm planned to use an exemption for electric vehicles, but TLC threw up a roadblock last week when commissioners voted to close that loophole. - On Tuesday, the company cut the ribbon on its new electric vehicle charging hub at the old Pfizer factory on Flushing and Marcy avenues in Bedford-Stuyvesant, which will be open to the public to juice up their electric cars 24/7 starting Tuesday, with free charging for the first seven days - the power center was supposed to support Revel's fleet of Tesla Model Y's, as well as charge EV's owned by the public at the rate of 39 cents per kilowatt-hour Original Source : https://www.brooklynpaper.com/revel-vows-to-launch-tesla-e-cab-this-summer/ CRASHES INVOLVING TESLA AUTOPILOT AND OTHER DRIVER-ASSISTANCE SYSTEMS GET NEW SCRUTINY · Original Source : https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/29/business/tesla-autopilot-safety.html TESLA WINS AGAINST GREEN ACTIVISTS WHO SOUGHT TO DELAY EUROPEAN PLANT Original Source : https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/tesla-wins-against-green-activists-who-sought-delay-european-plant TESLA MODEL Y LAUNCH DATE AND PRICING IN HONG KONG REVEALED Original Source : https://thedriven.io/2021/06/30/tesla-model-y-launch-date-and-pricing-in-hong-kong-revealed/ 142 TESLA MEGAPACKS POWER ON TO CREATE GIANT NEW BATTERY, REPLACING GAS PEAKER PLANT IN CALIFORNIA Original Source : https://electrek.co/2021/06/30/tesla-megapacks-power-on-battery-replacing-gas-peaker-plant-california/ CHAR.GY AWARDED £6.4M FOR ON-STREET CHARGING IN THE UK Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2021/06/29/char-gy-awarded-6-4m-for-on-street-charging-in-the-uk/ NETHERLANDS LICENSES FIRST EV SMART CHARGING COMPANY TO PROVIDE GRID SERVICES Original Source : https://www.pv-magazine.com/2021/06/30/netherlands-licenses-first-ev-smart-charging-company-to-provide-grid-services/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter CONNECTICUT INCREASES REBATES FOR ELECTRIC CAR PURCHASES Original Source : https://www.nbcconnecticut.com/news/politics/connecticut-increases-rebates-for-electric-car-purchases/2517612/ GERMANY: PLUG-IN CAR SALES MORE THAN QUADRUPLED IN MAY 2021 Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/517066/germany-plugin-sales-may-2021/ PORSCHE MACAN EV INTERIOR CAUGHT IN FRESH SPY PHOTOS Original Source : https://www.autoblog.com/2021/06/29/porsche-macan-ev-interior-spy-photos/ NEW 2022 GENESIS GV60 ELECTRIC CROSSOVER CAUGHT ON CAMERA Original Source : https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/genesis/108161/new-2022-genesis-gv60-electric-crossover-caught-camera QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM If you could only afford one, would you rather - Solar Panels or battery storage? This week’s episode is all about Tony! First off, he’s now fully vaccinated! Wei-Shen calls him out for bragging that he doesn’t (usually) get reactions to vaccines. Tony also had his first in-person interview at the very-loved White Horse Tavern in Downtown Manhattan. We discuss his issues with anxiety and how he has dealt with it so far. Then, they discuss how things will start to change when people start to go back to offices. There will be new anxieties that people have to deal with. How do firms manage that without alienating their workforce? How do they encourage their people to overcome their anxieties instead of shrinking away from things that make them uncomfortable? The key, we think, is also in showing empathy, even when we don’t fully understand the why or how.

Chris joins me on The Real Takk Podcast to discuss the 3 most pressing issues facing New Yorkers, in life & work today, the state of the commercial market in NYC, what he thinks the recovery holds for New Yorkers, & shares his come up in the cut-throat world of commercial real estate. Chris founded Okada & Co in 2005 by himself. He rose to distinction during the financial crisis of 2009 and its recovery by using the market's lowered state to transact in nearly $1B commercial real estate sales and leasing transactions in Midtown and Downtown Manhattan. 2011 Christopher founded The Okada Acquisition Company to begin acquiring prime office, retail, and multi-family properties in the Midtown and Midtown South submarkets of Manhattan. His Acquisitions include a prime office building in the Herald Square section of Midtown, a brand new luxury condominium development known as 432 West 52nd Street, and few other office and retail properties like 894 Avenue of the Americas, 148 West 24th Street, and the retail at 135 West 52nd Street. You may follow Chris at ChrisOkada in the following social channels: LinkedIn: ChristopherOkadaFacebook: @ChrisOkadaInstagram: @ChrisOkadaTwitter: @ChrisOkada

Castle Clinton and Seaglass Carousel are tourist magnets in Battery Park. Downtown Manhattan packs streets with historic landmarks and lessons. But these two iconic spots are most popular. For good reason. They have the best stories. Battery Park meets Broadway at its bottom. This area, near the Staten Island Ferry, holds enough history to fill a library of books. Texas native, Peter Sandel is principal & founder of Peter Sandel Design, LLC a boutique design firm based in Downtown Manhattan. Peter’s portfolio is not tied to any one signature style but highlights a range of approaches unified in thoughtful floor plans, unique furnishings and dedication to exceptional craftsmanship. Although interior design has been a natural and lifelong passion, it wasn't the obvious career choice. After a decade working as a Washington lobbyist; it was a timely transition to New York, coupled with the tragic loss of his Mother to breast cancer that compelled him to seek change. Sandel subsequently started his career in design working for world-renowned architect Peter Marino. He later worked alongside Dallas' most sought after interior designers while simultaneously starting his own firm. He obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Baylor University and later attended the New York School of Interior Design. www.petersandel.com instagram.com/petersandeldesign.com

Our Downtown Manhattan tag team preached this Sunday about celebrating others and putting their joy and successes above our own as we carry a culture of second fiddle. When we create a kingdom culture that is devoted to uplifting and serving others, we create a world that glorifies God.

As social media grows, personal privacy continues to grow as a concern, and it seems Europe has been more protective of privacy through actions such as implementing GDPR, right to be forgotten, and consumer protection laws on digital purchases. In the U.S. it seems the response is simply “adjust your privacy settings,” and sometimes I am reminded by the platform to do so regularly. To make matters worse, it seems there are data breaches at the top companies that are required to protect our information. There is still so much to do and learn about protecting our information online. And on the other hand, we all can choose specifically what we want others to see, or not see, although it is sometimes easy to let certain privacy settings slip. While lawmakers and technology companies work out those issues, there is another area of concern with relation to privacy to address in this article. The knowledge that advertisers can reach us by understanding where we travel and live in person and explore on the internet is quite a concern to some. Whether companies have developed technologies to understand our behaviors which benefits them by helping them make more money is not the question. The technology is already upon us. The question now is whether the highly targeted advertising is good or bad, and I say it is good because it helps us get what we want. I argue that we see advertising because more often than not, at some level, the product, video, newsletter, or content on the ad appeals to us at some level. And these algorithms are getting more sophisticated. Now obviously, not EVERY SINGLE ad we see is going to be perfect for us. And some people get mad just from seeing an advertisement. But I overall, through a combination of all the information we choose to share on the technologies we have become reliant on, advertising algorithms help us get what we want. If you aren't savvy on technology algorithms or digital advertising methods, I will explain it very briefly here. Algorithms used on social media or Amazon or Netflix are essentially “equations” or “systems” that help determine what you will see on your feeds. There are other uses for algorithms, but that is the gist of it. A physical example would be the process of determining where to buy billboard space to have the maximum impact for a specific product. The second part of this is the digital advertiser's job. The platform already has an “underlying” technology, but it comes to the job of the advertiser to dig down even further to get the right product in front of the right person eyes. While the algorithm helps in delivering by bringing everything together, the advertiser must know who exactly needs to see their product by evaluating whether their best audience is a male or female, or by age group, or location. People living in the middle of Downtown Manhattan probably have less of a need for a new tractor than someone living in a rural town known for growing the best lettuce. Great, so now we understand why we see what we see online. It is not just “the latest” news anymore. It is content, products, or services that are relevant to us. And when it comes to advertising, there is someone whose job it is to get us to see what it is they are selling as we scroll through our daily feeds. And here is the beauty of it all. Even though some of us might be concerned about our privacy, or despise advertisers because it feels intrusive, there is a very positive side here. And that is: the good advertisers, the companies who have tremendous brands and reputations at stake, the entrepreneurs who are working hard to get their products or services noticed so they can make their place in history, they want you to see a product that is useful to you! Maybe the product is a new training system because you are a human resources manager, or maybe a new pair of basketball shoes because your child's birthday who plays basketball might be coming up. Now I am not saying that all algorithms and --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/strategic-possibilities/support

The Culture Club No - not the Boy George led band of the 1980's and not even the awesome Club in Downtown Manhattan that bares the same name. We are talking about the culture club WITHIN the New York Islanders. Let's take it back a few months here. Clean out Day, April 9th 2018 - An unshaven and honestly disheveled looking Garth Snow feebly addresses the media, Doug Weight, with a sour look on his face attempts to do the same. Jon Ledecky reads, angrily - from a pre-written letter claiming that ownership and the team has let fans down. This is months following a billboard that was erected in Brooklyn, begging for the GM to be fired. It was just awkward, and honestly pretty confusing. It turns out, both Snow and Weight were lame ducks at that table that day in April. Things would eventually progress pretty rapidly afterwards - Lou Lamoriello wouldn't be extended in Toronto. He winds up on Long Island, is named President of Hockey Operations and is given full autonomy by ownership. Stop the presses! Autonomy! What's that? Well, we would come to find out for sure. Lou started doing Lou type things. Leaks, they stopped. The culture, well he took it straight on and in one swoop - out with the old. It's what he does, right? Garth Snow and Doug Weight were removed as General Manager and Head Coach in the same afternoon on June 9th. Just like that, he ripped the bandaid off when nobody was even looking. As we move forward, Lou stated he was going to hire "the best coach available" and all signs were pointing to coaches without jobs - nobody expected a coach playing for and ultimately winning the Stanley Cup to reach a contract impasse with his team, the Washington Capitals, right? No, I didn't - you didn't, but Lou probably knew something and Barry Trotz was signed to a contract with the Islanders on June 21st. Just like that - the culture tide was changing. Lou would then go and add Steve Pellegrini, formerly of the New Jersey Devils as Assistant GM. Fire assistants Greg Cronin, Kelly Buchberger, and Luke Richardson - all Weight's guys. Curiously he would leave the Bridgeport staff as untouched.... Hire long time Trotz Assistant Lane Lambert as well as John Gruden (who's story is extremely interesting and worth a read, too). And then, they would let go of Goaltending coach - Fred Brathwaite in order to hire former Toronto Marlies tendy coach - Piero Greco, and following that up with the goalie whisperer in Mitch Korn as Director of Goaltending. Keep in mind both of these goalie guys are fresh off winning their leagues respective championships. So, to summarize - Every losing coach was canned and they brought in proven winners. Even Gruden has won at the levels he's coached. We have Trotz and Lambert that will install their own systems and evaluate talent. We have Greco who will work with Robin Lehner and Thomas Greiss and without a doubt work better numbers into their play. Gruden will work magic with the kids, or at least I assume that's the hope. In these sweeping changes, Lou Lamoriello has installed a system of accountability, proffessionalism and respect that the Islanders as an organization have not seen in a really long time. What they can do with the roster they have obviously remains to be seen, but the things coming out of the players mouths at this point have been really positive. It makes for exciting offseason talk, at the very least. I also took some Twitter questions for the podcast - just to try to involve some of you fine folks in the discussions. Let's take a look! Prepping for Episode One of The Isles Faithful Podcast @faithfulisles - let's hear some questions and I'll read your tweets on the show. #isles #islestwitter #hockeypodcast @nyislanders — Michael Schuerlein (@islesblogger) July 25, 2018 Hope you all enjoyed Episode Two!

Do you ever get the feeling that we can tend to overcomplicate things when it comes to getting our life in order? While tools, tips, and hacks have their place - what about straight up personal responsibility? On this episode, you'll hear from entrepreneur and business leader, Chris Okada. Chris is a prolific dealmaker, entrepreneur, and CEO of Okada & Company, a full-service commercial real estate brokerage and investment company in New York City. Chris rose to distinction during the financial crisis of 2008 and its recovery by using the market's lowered state to transact in nearly $1B commercial real estate sales and leasing transactions in Midtown and Downtown Manhattan. Chris is also an avid blogger, speaker, and thought leader relating to entrepreneurship and real estate subjects. He has been featured numerous times in publications including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The New York Post, The Real Deal Magazine, Crain's NY, The Observer, and many other digital and print news agencies. Our culture has conditioned us to value self-preservation so highly that we've become allergic to anything that remotely looks like responsibility. Kaizenites, it's time that we confront this harmful message and move forward with a renewed focus on taking ownership of our actions including the positive and negative outcomes they create. Let's leave the blame game behind and create a brighter future! Here are a few takeaways from today's podcast episode with Chris Okada: You are not a self-made person, you are a product of your community! Gratitude is the gateway to happiness. Diversify your interests, you never know what opportunities they might open up! The right influences are key, look for people who will point you in the right direction. There are so many helpful insights that Chris has to share, I can't wait for you Kaizenites to dive in and find the lessons that will help move you further down your path to fulfillment! Outline of This Episode [4:40] Chris Okada joins the podcast. [5:45] Why like-minded people connect. [9:10] Chris talks about the impact his family has had on his journey. [15:30] What does it mean to “Win?” -- It's a luxury! [21:30] Finding balance and learning from Gary Vaynerchuk. [24:30] Gratitude is the gateway to happiness. [28:30] The difference between a high stakes deal and everything else. [37:00] Getting fired up and staying “Afraid.” [42:00] How visual goals can help you succeed. [46:00] Look for people who will point you in the right direction. [48:40] Learn how to execute in life and business. [51:30] Life is harder than business will ever be. [54:00] Chris' dream to create luxury retirement communities. [58:00] What does it mean to Own Your Self according to Chris? [59:50] An audit you can run through for a helpful self-diagnostic. [1:02:40] Who should connect with Chris? Grab the bull by the horns and take some personal responsibility! Let's face it, no one likes to get called out on their BS, I know I don't! That's why it's so refreshing to hear from leaders like Chris who are ridiculously humble and open to sharing their story. One of the primary themes from my conversation with Chris was the concept of personal responsibility. Not once did I hear Chris blame others for challenges and frustrations he's encountered in his life. A couple years back, Chris faced an onslaught of personal losses that sent him in a downward spiral and sunk him into a deep hole of grief. While he could have lashed out and blamed the circumstances or even those around him, Chris decided to go to work searching for solutions. Often times, the best solution to our problems is to pick ourselves up and go to work on finding a way to address our situation. Don't just think of success and achievement as the only areas of personal responsibility. Finding your way to a healthy work-life balance and out of your particular funk is something you need to take ownership of too! I'm ready to lay down my defensiveness and knee-jerk reactions of self-preservation and opt for embracing personal responsibility. Will you join me? Imagine what it would look like if a whole generation of leaders decided to quit playing the blame game. We'd live a more complete and fulfilled life, I want that! Learn more about the way forward from Chris' deep well of insights by listening to this engaging episode! Find your tribe and learn from them. You might see a successful and thriving business leader like Chris and wonder, “How did they achieve their position and status?” That's a great question, but the better question is, “Who do they surround themselves with?” You've heard the saying, “Show me your friends, and I'll show you your future,” right? It's true! While you can't choose your family, you can choose your friends and that says a lot about the type of person you are. It's time to start taking a hold of your life! Put on your big boy or big girl pants and take personal responsibility for the people you've surrounded yourself with. Don't let those draining and toxic relationships pull you down and limit your potential. All the drama and distractions in your personal life are yours to own and yours fix! Do you need to make so changes in that department? Do it, those problems won't sort themselves out, you've got to take action! Imagine what it would look like if you had a tribe of like-minded people who you could count on and who could count on you. You'd be unstoppable! I hate to break it to you but that tribe will never land in your lap! You've got to go out there and create it. Take this opportunity to learn from Chris' story and find out how people around him have helped him flourish and thrive in one of the loudest (figuratively and literally) environments on the planet, Manhattan. Diversify your interests and open up new possibilities! When was the last time you re-evaluated your approach to your career and your personal goals? Have you ever thought about doing something outside of the box to get some out of the box results? If you were to ask someone on the street how I got connected with Chris, the last response you'd ever expect to receive would be, through Instagram. The reason why we connected through that platform is due to Chris' desire to branch out and explore new possibilities. I LOVE Chris' gutsy approach and I think we all need to learn from his example and make some bold movements in our lives if we have any hope for substantial change. What can you do today to move the needle? Think of something that will really change things up and go for it! What do you have to lose? I'm fired up from my conversation with Chris and I'm ready to re-think some of my paradigms and do some things I've never done before. Are you with me!? It was on this day in 1986 that the rap group the Beastie Boys debuted their first album, "License to Ill". After playing in punk bands in the burgeoning Downtown Manhattan arts scene of the early 80's members Mike D, Ad Rock and MCA were quickly drawn to this growing style of music coming out of the Bronx called hip hop. On today's "A Day in the Life" we explore the early career of the Beastie Boys and their association with record producer Rick Rubin.

Frank J Miles is a pandisciplinary artist based in New York City: a visual artist, an artistic philosopher, a social sculptor who studied at Columbia University, and a former speechwriter for President Bill Clinton. His work is about atheism, death, competition, bonding, density and utopia. The creator of Communitas, his next step is an MFA PhD program overseas in art and philosophy. Communitas is an essential part of his art practice. It is: a downtown Manhattan creative think tank and salon; a pandisciplinary arts collective; a future global arts movement and civilization Communitas is a symposium of the occurrent arts and social sculpture, captures the times we are moving toward – continuing the tradition of a Downtown Manhattan participatory social practice where the evolving ideas of society, culture, and New York City converge. This creative think tank is a salon which brings artists and audiences from many worlds of New York City and beyond to create what is the next vanguard for the city – welcoming a diverse spectrum of creative voices engaging in dialogical aesthetics and art intervention. Bringing people together to open more worlds, make beauty and magic, create peace and freedom, be more futurist than nostalgic, Communitas uses global art and its power to build a united tomorrow not equal but egalitarian. He is shot out of a canon and this is, without a doubt, one of the best conversations I have had on OTB. In this episode, we discuss racism in the gay community, the perils of Tinder, and how art can help us understand and ultimately transcend the many labels society tries to put on each of us.

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Elizabeth Thomson, Editor, “Bob Dylan: No Direction Home”About Harvey's guest:Today's show is all about an artist who is widely considered to be America's greatest musical poet laureate and visionary, Bob Dylan. He is an artist of transcendent historical importance, both as a cultural hero and an anti-hero. His songs have become part of our cultural DNA. In 1986, a groundbreaking book entitled “Bob Dylan: No Direction Home” was written by the renowned New York Times music critic, Robert Shelton, whose very first article about Bob Dylan brought him national attention and launched him as a celebrity. The book is uniquely insightful, because it's much more than a biography. It's an eyewitness account, because Mr. Shelton was a close friend of Bob Dylan's, and he was there for all of the pivotal events in Dylan's career in the first half of his life. This book comes as close as any book can, to finding the essence of the real Bob Dylan, and pierces through all the myths about this elusive artist. Mr. Shelton not only conducted an extensive and profound interview with Bob Dylan - he is the ONLY person EVER to have interviewed Dylan's parents. Sadly, Mr. Shelton passed away in 1995, but in 2011, a much more complete version of the book was published, which included many parts that were left out of the original edition. And now, a brand new edition is being released, thanks to our guest. She is a renowned journalist, broadcaster and author whose work has been featured in the most prestigious publications around the world. She's a contributing editor to theartsdesk.com, she's a contributor to The New Grove Dictionary of Music & Musicians, she was a founding trustee of the Desmond Elliott Prize for first novels, she served as Editor of the business weekly, “Publishing News”, she was the founding Editor of “Book Brunch”, the online bulletin and website for the publishing industry, she has lectured at numerous universities, and as a broadcaster, she has interviewed everyone from Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, to Leonard Cohen, Judy Collins, Janis Ian, André Previn, Vanessa Redgrave and Joan Baez. In fact, several years ago she wrote a highly compelling biography of Joan Baez entitled, “Joan Baez: The Last Leaf”. In 2018 she founded The Village Trip, a celebration of arts and activism in Greenwich Village and the East Village in Downtown Manhattan, and she currently serves as Joint Artistic Director of that event. But today, she's hear to talk about the brand new edition of “Bob Dylan: No Direction Home”.For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/To learn more about Elizabeth Thomson, go to:https://www.lizthomson.co.uk/https://www.facebook.com/thevillagetrip/https://twitter.com/TheVillageTrip@harveybrownstone,#harveybrownstone,@harveybrownstoneinterviews,#harveybrownstoneinterviews,#lizthomson,@lizthomson,#ElizabethThomson,@ElizabethThomson,#JoanBaez,#BobDylan,#RobertSheltonAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
