We're back with another AFTN Soccer Show packed full of Vancouver Whitecaps, Major League Soccer, CONCACAF Champions Cup, and Canadian football chat and interviews, in the first of two podcasts we have for your listening pleasure this week. It was a short offseason, which is always great because it means you've had a great previous year! The Whitecaps return to competitive action this week with two matches in two competitions. How ready are they? Head coach Jesper Sorensen shares some thoughts on the preseason prep, players' availability, and we preview the CONCACAF Champions Cup first round first leg match-up against Cartagines in Costa Rica. Our feature interview this week is with one of the newest Whitecaps, American attacker Aziel Jackson. We chat with AZ about his return to MLS from Poland, his loan to Vancouver, his time over in Europe, and his footballing journey, and find out if he fancies a chocolate digestive. Plus Jesper Sorensen shares his thoughts on the addition of the player. All the new MLS kits for the 2026 season were revealed this past week, including the Whitecaps' new away jersey, the Coastal Kit. We look at it flying off the shelves and what that might mean for the club's finances. Plus the fashionistas that we are, we cast our eyes of what we feel are the best and the worst of the current crop of kits for this year. All of this plus we move onto the letter G in our Canadian Soccer A to Z series, Hot Chocolate Boy is back for a final outing, and music-wise, Syd Barrett continues his residency as our Artist of the Month, Stump are the latest band to feature in our 40th anniversary tribute year to the C86 movement, and we have another World Cup themed song in Wavelength, this time a cover of an all-time classic. Here's the rundown for the main segments from the episode: 01.27: Intro - TV, VAR, this week in the world of football 16.27: Hot Chocolate Boy - Boketto and festival faves 21.40: Whitecaps' new kit sets sales records 37.50: MLS kits - the best and worst of 2026 70.30 Aziel Jackson interview and discussion 103.35: Anyone Fancy A Chocolate Digestive? - AZ Jackson 109.20: How ready are the Whitecaps for the season? - Jesper muses 125.05: CONCACAF Champions Cup preview 144.00: Canadian Soccer A to Z - G 153.00: Canada men U17's fail to qualify for World Cup 163.50: Wavelength - Running For Drugs - World In Motion
The continental calendar is back in motion. Cruz Azul takes full control of its Concacaf Champions Cup tie in Canada, while Monterrey is pushed hard in Guatemala but escapes with a result. We also look at CONMEBOL's new hydration break rule in Libertadores and Sudamericana play, the growing tension around Cristiano Ronaldo at Al Nassr, and the U.S. U17s beginning World Cup qualifying today with Atlanta United 2 goalkeeper James Donaldson on the roster. Plus, Around the Corner with SDH AM and a busy day ahead at Atlanta United training.
The desert delivered. Four Ozark United academy teams stepped onto 24 pristine fields at MLS Next Fest and found themselves surrounded by pro scouts, MLS academies, and a sea of college coaches, all hunting for players who can think fast, compete harder, and play brave. We came to showcase, not chase trophies, and the offers, interest, and hard lessons that followed proved why that choice matters. We break down what MLS Next Fest actually is, more than a showcase, it's an ecosystem, combining games, the MLS Draft and combine, coaching education, and real-world recruiting conversations. You'll hear how our U15s, U16s, U17s, and U19s handled the step up, what cold desert kickoffs taught them about preparation, and why our staff focused on our game model instead of opponent tape. From live video boards and field side cameras to packed sidelines featuring D1, D2, D3, NAIA, and JUCO coaches, this was the most heavily scouted environment our players have experienced, and it changed how they approach every minute. We talk candidly about recruiting: how rules differ by division, why the transfer portal shifts timelines, and how to evaluate fit across academics, finances, and playing time. You'll also get a look at the road ahead, finishing league play before high school season, partnering with local coaches to keep players healthy, and aiming for regionals in Kansas City with Next Cup qualification paths clear. Along the way, we celebrate the best part: hearing respected programs and scouts praise the way Ozark United plays, and watching our community put Arkansas firmly on the national soccer map.If you enjoyed this deep dive into development, recruiting, and the pathway to pro, follow the show, share it with a soccer friend in your life, and leave a review so more listeners in NWA and beyond can find us.

I'm joined again by Mark Kennedy of Hawkeye Sidekick and Philip Flanagan of The Bottomless Pit of Football to review the Republic of Ireland senior men's team's play off against Bulgaria, we've picked up one bad habit under the new manager, but also seem to know how to recover from it. With the women's team needing to bounce back from two underwhelming performances, and one particularly bad result, in their opening games of the Nations League, and facing a Greek side looking to get their first points on the board for their campaign, how do we think it'll go over the two games for Carla Ward's side? Finally, the U19 and U17 qualifying campaigns reached their climaxes, with a disappointing result for the U19s in Germany, but the U17s will play in their first World Cup in Qatar this November. What did we think of the performances from both sides, and who do we think is going to worth looking our for at the end of the year?(note this was recorded before the women's team's first game against Greece) Hosted on Acast. Two weeks ago, we gave you a preview into our Nations League quarterfinal matchups against Trinidad and Tobago and also had a recap after our 3-nil victory on US soil, where I was joined by my guest host, Chris Piel, in breaking down the performances and what we could expect in that second leg down in T&T. Since I took last week off for the Thanksgiving holiday, we weren't able to recap that second match, so that's what you can expect today. Recapping the performances, talking about what is next for this national team, I want to chat a bit about our U17s in their World Cup round of 16 matchup they had against Germany, as well as our personal experiences growing up with the national team, and just wrap up with a final thought or two. And lucky for me and everyone listening, I am once again joined by my guest host, Chris Piel, today to chat through all of it with us. Support the show
