Gentleness is going to cost you something-especially this holiday season. Is it going to be your discomfort? Your pride? Today, we're getting into an interview with April Dawn White and Marilyn Nutter, Coauthors of Destination Hope: A Travel Companion When Life Falls ApartThis is our last formal conversation on the Fruit of the Spirit, but, it will naturally continue well into every other conversation we ever have because it's so powerful. I am honored you're here, and I hope and pray you lean into this conversation. Just about every one of us have admitted that we struggle with gentleness, and, that is why this could possibly be one of the most important conversations we have this season.I referenced Scott Sauls' book, A Gentle Answer: Our Secret Weapon in an Age of Us Against Them. In this episode, Aaron and Brian are joined by Scott Sauls, Senior Pastor of Christ Presbyterian Church in Nashville, Tennessee and author of “A Gentle Answer: Our Secret Weapon in an Age of Us Against Them.” Aaron and Brian ask Scott about the difficulties of pastoring in a divided culture and how the church can find and promote unity that is based on Jesus. In late 2014, Slate magazine published a series of articles under the title, “The Year of Outrage.” If anything, the outrage in America has only worsened since then. Even Christians have jumped onto the outrage train. The results haven’t been pretty, for either society generally or churches specifically. What would Jesus do? And how should Christians follow His example? Scott Sauls thinks gentleness is the answer to both questions: “Jesus has been gentle toward us,” he writes, “so we have good reason to become gentle toward others, including those who treat us like enemies.” In this episode of the Influence Podcast, I’m talking to Pastor Sauls about how Jesus’ gentleness is the antithesis of outrage culture. I’m George P. Wood, executive editor of Influence magazine and your host. Scott Sauls is senior pastor of Christ Presbyterian Church in Nashville, Tennessee, and author of A Gentle Answer: Our “Secret Weapon” in an Age of Us Against Them, published in June by Thomas Nelson. ----- This episode of the Influence Podcast is brought to you by My Healthy Church, distributors of Tru Fire Curriculum: Kidmin leaders often feel worn down by curriculum that doesn’t give them what they need to be effective. We have a tendency to see black and white in our stories. We believe we’re doing the right things because we don’t seem to be encountering many problems. We think we’re loving others well because we don’t see any evidence that says otherwise. But the truth is that no matter how hard we try, we will face hard problems and tough situations. We will face division and anger. But God will equip us with the tools we need to navigate life with profound faith and great love. Pastor and author Scott Sauls asks us to think about what our world would be like if we approached others with compassion and gentleness like Jesus, to try and heal a hurting world. Advocates Jay and Katherine Wolf faced the unimaginable when Katherine, a twenty-six-year-old mother of a six-month-old son, suffered a brain stem stroke that turned their world upside down. Now a full-time caregiver, Jay shares how God brought them closer to Him through each other, and how sometimes healing and despair go hand in hand.  Links, Products and Resources Mentioned: Sarah Young Jesus Calling Podcast Jesus Calling books Jesus Calling devotional Jesus Calling: What’s Good? Pastor Scott Sauls is one of the most prominent voices when it comes to how Christians can and should should respond to potentially contentious conversations about race, social issues, politics, and religion. His new book that came out in early June, A Gentle Answer: Our Secret Weapon in an Age of Us Against Them, is a timely, necessary book in a year of racial unrest and political contentiousness. Written to serve as a guide as we enter what looks to be a turbulent election season, the racial unrest that has arose from the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and others have presented another layer of tension that enters the conversation, both literally and figuratively. Sauls, who is the pastor at Christ Presbyterian Church in Nashville and also authored Jesus Outside the Lines: A Way Forward for Those Who Are Tired of Taking Sides, provides some keen wisdom on how Christians can approach these issues with the gentleness and love that the Bible speaks about. Super talented Glen Morgan of X-Files writing and executive producing fame gets back to his writing desk this week to pen the rebooted Twilight Zone’s 4th Episode, “A Traveler.” Morgan’s tale cleverly creates an Us Against Them theme where the viewers get to see from the murky perspective lens of the Twilight Zone, who truly is “Us” and who is “Them.” Please join Darrell and Robert as they discuss brother Jack’s drunken, yet all too truthful sober warning to his smart, strong, and beautiful sister, Sargent Yuka, “...unless you are the lead sled dog, the view is always pretty much the same.” We also have many of our questions about the reboot addressed in a Glen Morgan interview that Darrell found, and Robert nearly falls off the deep end with excitement as he gets to make all the connections to this episode with his idol monster-hunting skeptic hero, Carl Kolchak, of the 1970’s NightStalker series.
