Helium Boys: Playcalling woes in Washington, Jayden Maiava time and Shotgun invades Paris

Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino return behind the microphones for another episode of the Helium Boys Podcast, a serious non-serious USC football podcast. The Helium Boys are back to break down another disappointing USC loss, this time with a slightly different script but with all the familiar elements as the Trojans held a fourth-quarter lead on the road only to relinquish the lead and not be able to find the end zone for the game-winning score. They also look forward, giving their thoughts on what to expect following Lincoln Riley's decision to bench Miller Moss in favor of Jayden Maiava. The episode opens with the Helium Boys staple 'Two-Minute Drill' that features Shotgun discussing the anniversary of a classic Helium Boys road trip as well as the Women of Troy getting a gutsy season-opening victory in the Aflec Oui-Play event in Paris. Chris then takes the 'Two-Minute Drill' reins to tell an epic story of trying to find food after the conclusion of the USC-Washington game. Chris and Shotgun then dive into their Stock Up/Stock Down segment looking at the players and themes that saw their stock rise or dip this week. Zachariah Branch had one of his best games this season while young pass rushers Sam Greene and Kameryn Fountain continue to earn more opportunities. Maiava's stock is obviously on the rise as he takes over the reins of the USC offense and the Trojans' run game, when given a chance, continues to excel recently. On the flip side, the Trojans' saw some weak points at right tackle as well as one of their cornerback spots. Those and Riley's playcalling are focused upon in the Stock Down portion. After a break, the podcast duo answer your mailbag questions discussing young players that could become starters next season and USC women's basketball's dramatic win in Paris. The episode concludes with Chris quizzing Shotgun with some Take It or Leave Its about the Trojans and what stood out from Shotgun's trip to Paris. Offense vs Purdue Starts at 1:00 EDITOR NOTE: I am also spending a lot of time compressing Brian's voice. The worst night game to have is the crappy night game, especially when USC Washington and Alabama LSU are on! It says something that JJ hit 60% of his passes and threw for over 300 yards and everyone's like "what's wrong with JJ?" When do you want to save a play and when do you want to put it on tape? Donovan Edwards has not been utilized properly, are they saving a package for him against Penn State? Starting tackles gave up some sacks but otherwise played pretty well (Purdue has a pair of NFL defensive ends). Is the way to beat JJ by playing a lot of zone defense?   2. Defense vs Purdue Starts at 43:20 Michigan wasn't getting sacks against Hudson Card but they were pressuring him on every play. It'll be curious to see who actually rotates against Penn State. Starting to feel like we're getting the 2021 version of Rod Moore, which is encouraging. Junior Colson took a step in the right direction, Josh Wallace also played well. All of the ends are a higher level than we predicted at the beginning of the year. 3. Hot Takes, Game Theory, and Special Teams Starts at 1:02:36 Takes hotter than Santa Ono's letter to Tony Petitti. Why is Purdue football every five years just two NFL defensive ends and nothing else? The 4th and one felt like a good decision, the formation wasn't. Michigan hasn't kicked a field goal in forever so it was good to see it still works. Starters played well into the 4th quarter. 4. Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac Starts at 1:25:22 Penn State - 51 Maryland - 15 Maryland turns the ball over four times and rushes for -49 yards. Yup, we're at November Maryland, they are no longer a trap game. When Drew Allar can set his feet and have time to throw he looks like the five star he's supposed to be, but when you pressure him he's shaky. They probably won't be able to run against Michigan but they still have one of the best defenses in college football. Ohio State - 35 Rutgers - 16 Rutgers is leading 9-7 at halftime but throws a pick-six while driving in the 3rd quarter. Rutgers outgains Ohio State 361-328. We experienced for a moment what it was like being a Rutgers fan and it wasn't fun. Iowa - 10 Northwestern - 7 Neither team gets more than 200 yards and Iowa is alone in first place in the West. He can't keep getting away with it. Indiana - 20 Wisconsin - 14 How did Indiana win this? Uhh, one good pass play? Wisconsin outgain Indiana 344-261. Indiana took the lead and just waited for the time to run out before Wisconsin came back. Michigan State - 20 Nebraska - 17 Nebraska gets back to their old self, turning the ball over three times. Illinois - 27 Minnesota - 26 Illinois wins on an improbable last minute drive with their backup QB. A disappointing game for anyone who didn't want to see Iowa in the Big Ten Championship Game. The Helium Boys Podcast returns with Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino reuniting to react to USC's off-the-rails 50-49 win at California in this Halloween edition of the Helium Boys Podcast. They break down the back-and-forth battle with the Golden Bears that was settled by a defensive stop of a two-point conversion attempt, improving the Trojans to 7-2 on the season. Shotgun and Chris discuss the notable takeaways, including the dynamic defensive impact of Eric Gentry, USC actually sticking with the run game for four quarters and how Bear Alexander's presence in the second half completely transformed the defense. Throughout the episode, Chris also plays a game, stopping the action to ask Shotgun to react to a spooky fact or guess the horror film a quote is from. The Helium Boys Halloween episode opens with the 'Two-Minute Drill' as each gives his initial reactions to the Trojans' win over Cal and the biggest things that stood out. In the Stock Up/Stock Down segment, the podcasting duo discuss who/what impressed, including USC's fight and the rising expectations being greater than the appreciation for fans. The Helium Boys also look into what stocks took a hit over the weekend such as nickelback Jaylin Smith and the rising number of plays Lincoln Riley says the Trojans need to fix on each side of the ball. Chris and Shotgun also look forward at the "really cool opportunities" the Trojans have in front of them, starting with a matchup against No. 5 Washington Saturday in the Coliseum, featuring a showdown between last season's Heisman Trophy award winner Caleb Williams and the current favorite for the 2024 Heisman Trophy, Huskies quarterback Michael Penix Jr. The Helium Boys then answer your questions from Twitter, email and Instagram discussing Lincoln Riley/Alex Grinch, the defense, Halloween costumes and Halloween candy. Then during the overtime portion of the 'Take It or Leave It' section, Chris questions Shotgun on the top candy in a variety of states. Finally, the podcast concludes with the Helium Boys giving their score predictions for the USC-Washington matchup (4:30 p.m. PDT) in the Coliseum this weekend. USC, Oregon, Washington, Utah and Oregon State -- yes, five real playoff contenders in the Pac-12 this season as Doug Lesmerises and Shehan Jeyarajah dive into their preseason Pac-12 playoff preview. All five of those teams have veteran QBs, and the best teams in the league didn't lose a lot after last season. That means the last half of the season will be wild as these teams will be providing a top-level matchup each weekend in the second half. But will one make the playoff? What about the futures of programs like Cal, Colorado and Arizona State? How will the Pac-12 look when USC and UCLA are gone after next season? USC's defense has been forcing turnovers at an incredible rate through two games, but even if they force just 1-2 against Fresno State their offense is operating at a level that should allow them to win comfortably inside The Coliseum. For Washington and Cal, the questions going into the game come on the offensive side of the ball and how each team will perform against the highest level of competition they've seen so far in 2022. On today's episode of Locked On Pac-12, Spencer McLaughlin is joined by host of Locked On Utes JT Wistrcill to look at the most important factors in the conference's biggest games of the weekend. He provides insight having spoken with Utah players as to why he's feeling confident about the Utes' impending matchup with the Aztecs of San Diego State, who knocked of Utah in 2021 in overtime. After a perfect 3-0 performance last week, Spencer's 'Pac-12 Prime Picks' are back--and this week he's riding 2 Pac-12 teams and betting against a number in one of them. He details why he's backing 2 double-digit favorites at home in USC and Utah, but is taking Michigan State to win and cover against Washington in Seattle as a surprise 3.5 point underdog. USC Football's expectations in recruiting after the hire of Lincoln Riley have understandably gone up after moving on from Clay Helton. So far he's delivered on that optimism with commitments from high-end 2023 players like QB Malachi Nelson and WR Zach Branch. At this point in the recruiting cycle, however, the Trojans have not found a lot of success in the trenches on either side of the ball. A recent commitment on the offensive line from Micah Banuelos, who should fit well in Riley's offensive schemes, might change that.On today's episode of Locked On Pac-12, Spencer McLaughlin is joined by John Garcia Jr., director of recruiting for Sports Illustrated. USC Football has the potential to be one of the best recruiting schools in the country--not just in the Pac-12. Part of their potential rise with Lincoln Riley could come at the expense of other Pac-12 schools who have to compete with the Trojans on the recruiting trail. Justin Wilcox and the Cal Bears recently felt that come to fruition when 3-star OL Amos Talalele flipped his commitment to the Trojans, despite having gone to high school much closer to Berkeley than Los Angeles in Santa Clara, CA. On today's episode of Locked On Pac-12, Spencer McLaughlin looks at the latest news in the 2023 conference recruiting landscape. At its peak on the recruiting trail, Washington Football is capable of bringing int top-20 caliber recruiting classes. Their latest 2023 verbal commitments are a decent pair of 3-star players, but arguably more important is that EDGE prospect Jacob Lane is an in-state recruit--the type that DeBoer and his staff need to keep at home. Spencer concludes the show evaluating Washington Football's hire of Kalen DeBoer. After a 10-3 season in 2021 with Fresno State that included a win over UCLA and a near upset over Oregon, DeBoer left the Bulldogs after just 2 seasons (1 being 2020) as their head coach. The task in front of him to rebuild Washington is rather significant, but his hire was perhaps unsurprising--the Huskies last head coach hired out of the Mountain West Conference (Chris Petersen) worked out very well. They talked about USC's key missing players, including quarterback Kedon Slovis, safety Talanoa Hufanga, and Olaijah Griffin, as well as spotlight the two or three key matchups that should tell the tale between the Trojans and Huskies. Obviously there's going to be a lot of attention paid to the first career start for USC quarterback Matt Fink. Having that first start at Husky Stadium in front of a raucous crowd against him won't help things. But Fink has plenty of playmakers around him, especially at receiver (Michael Pittman, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Tyler Vaughns). But will USC try and slow things down and ground the Air Raid a little bit to find their football via the run game? And when it comes to Washington's offensive line going up against USC's defensive line, UW senior center Nick Harris already referred to the matchup as a 'bloodbath'. The Huskies know they're going to have their hands full, but it takes two to tango, and UW's offensive line is feeling good about themselves and riding some positive momentum after an impressive 45-19 win at BYU. We answer some Facebook questions about LSU's high-scoring win over Vanderbilt, D'eriq King's bizarre situation at Houston, and UCLA's crazy win over Wazzu (59:10). TCU may not be very good and we have no idea what's going to happen in this Iowa State-Baylor game this weekend (1:14:10). We finish up by picking Virginia-Notre Dame, USC-Washington, Kansas State-OSU, Ohio State-Nebraska, and Washington State-Utah (1:16:30). | Like the show on Facebook: @westofeverest | Follow Grant on Twitter: @GrantBenson25 | Follow Lee on Twitter: @LeeBensonNews9

The ass-ingest week of the college football season is here, and we are here to do two things: kick said ass, and chew bubble gum. And we are all out of bubble gum. Because we ate it. Because bubble gum is delicious, and something that tastes that good shouldn't be something you aren't supposed to eat. Topics of interest for week eleven: --We're going to talk about football, because that's our job! Nothing else. At least, not much of anything else before we go about our business. --It's a less-than-luminous week on the slate, but USC/Washington is happening. Do you call all USC quarterbacks "Matt" by default? Spencer does, and it makes so much sense when you start remembering that everyone who has ever played QB for the Trojans is actually a secret Matt. --How Washington coach Chris Petersen's greatest asset as a coach is calling an offensive game like a complete dick. (He's fine, personally! But calling plays like he does? Total dick, which is what you want when you --Hey listen Will Muschamp has had success with a young QB before, it's just not fun to remember when you're yelling about "LOL MUSCHAMP." Oh, and a reminder that there is the real possibility that a kid who could be playing his senior season in high school might have to face Alabama in the SEC Championship Game! That should probably be illegal! --Arkansas also plays LSU in the week's only other matchup of ranked teams. One is ranked #24 and one is ranked #25 but that still technically means ranked in the weakest possible definition of ranked. --A proposal for Oregon to hire Hugh Freeze, the man least personally compatible with living in Eugene, Oregon and working for Phil Knight --SOMETHING'S GOT TO GIVE BECAUSE O-5 IN BIG TEN PLAY MICHIGAN STATE PLAYS 0-5 RUTGERS LET'S KICK THIS SHIT OFF AT NINE A.M. AND SEE HOW SOON WE CAN GET IT OVER WITH --Notre Dame is playing Army in San Antonio, for some reason? --Let Jason do his best Dana Holgorsen impression, which he describes as "drunk Shawn Michaels." A meal eaten at 1 a.m. still counts as breakfast. --Washington/Cal is happening again so be prepared for seven hours of something sort of resembling football that will end in tears
