Floyd Lavine, Lakuti, Coco Em and Desiree discuss where their inspiration comes from, the challenges of being an African artist trying to tour, and the Afro boom. Floyd Lavine's sound takes in influences from his childhood listening to Kwaito, soul, jazz and South African house, alongside the house and techno club sounds of London, and his adopted home town of Berlin. He runs his own label NomadiQ Music, and produces for international labels like Murmur and Lower East. Lakuti is a DJ born in Soweto in South Africa, who since the early 90s has organised underground parties around the world. In 2007 she founded Uzuri Recordings, and later Uzuri artist Management. She's also a resident at Berlin's legendary Panorama Bar. Coco Em is a photojournalist turned DJ who was born in Kenya. She's the founder of the Nairobi-based femme collective Sim Sima, which is also the name of her label. Last year she released her debut EP, Kilumi. Johannesburg-based DJ and producer Desiree's been making waves with her impeccable selecting skills and eclectic tastes. She co-founded Boys Club, an electronic music events movement which seeks to empower femme DJs. She released her debut EP, Femme Tech, last summer.

Sasa, nini haswa kilitokea? Wapi hasa alienda mrama? Ni kweli alikosea? Au malengo yake si malengo yetu? Au tulipokua tunamuona sisi yeye alikua hapaoni huko? Vikwazo vilikua nini? Tafadhali enjoy. Love, Salama. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/yahstonetown/support

Ricardo Scipio talks about his personal journey and struggle as an artist. What made him decide to make sexual art? What has he learned about sex from photographing over 500 people having sex? How has seeing his work affected the people who have seen his work and how does that affect him? Trinidad-born Ricardo Scipio has thus far garnered the reputation for making unique, multi-layered, provocative work in film and photography. His first feature film "When" was an irrepressibly brutal and comedic portrayal of dysfunctional struggling actresses in New York. His second feature film "Watershed" was the first independent feature film in North America to be shot in digital high-definition, breaking ground with its technical and narrative accomplishments. His third feature film "Finder of Lost Children," set in the Caribbean community of Canada, is a poignantly moving and humorous story of two half-sisters that meet for the first time at the funeral of the father neither one of them knew. Ricardo grew up in Toronto and attended both The Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and The University of Waterloo. He started his art career as a fashion photographer and then later as a fine art nude photographer. He has had 14 gallery shows of his work and his first book of photographs- a collaboration with noted Canadian poet George Elliott Clarke, was published in November of 2005. His second book "The Goddess Project" was completed in 2010. A book of nudes of Black women entitled "Uzuri" was finalized in 2011. Never idle for long, Scipio has completed photographing his fourth book "The Goddess Project Book Two" in 2012. His fifth book "The Goddess Project Book Three" was finished in 2015. The Sex Goddess Project Book One was completed in 2016 He completed The Sex Goddess Project Book Two in 2018, Book Three of the series in 2019 and Book Four in 2020. Ricardo has recently started his his tenth book "The Intimacy Project." When not on tour, Scipio makes his home in Canada. If you're like most music producers juggling the logistics of home life with studio time you're going to love this episode... Today I'm sitting down with Cassy, a globally in-demand DJ and producer who boasts landmark recorded mixes for the likes of Panorama bar and Fabric, and has releases on a who's who of labels from Aus Music to Uzuri and Bass Culture. Now, this conversation is a real ride… We dig deep into Cassy's journey through the highs and the lows of pursuing a career that she so clearly loves. From how she creates and collaborates with her music, the equipment she uses, and playing all over the world, all of that good stuff, to her personal struggles and balancing the magic whilst also wrestling with the difficult aspects of the industry. We discussed the challenges, the opportunities, the things about the scene that really lights Cassy up and the things that put her off... ...and even had her questioning whether she wanted to carry on or not. If you're looking to forge a career as a DJ or producer in today's scene then this super candid conversation is essential listening.

Chubby! on Facebook: www.facebook.com/chubbyrecords @chicago-skyway Long-time Chicago native and house champion Chicago Skyway is the latest welcomed artist for the Chubby! Podcast. Sean Hernandez has been producing for the past near 15 years releasing EP's on some of the best underground labels around. He has multiple releases on the iconic label M>O>S Recordings, the highly-regarded Uzuri, Emphasis and Eargasmic labels among others.. But these fruitful years were first supported by being a fan of the music for another 15 years prior to writing his own. A solid foundation of learning the history of the genre while being an avid collector and DJ is in our eyes, the best way to come up. Learn what has been done so you have something to say. And to find the inspiration to express your own point of view. Sean has earned his stripes like that. Naturally, being a fan of house and techno will take root and express themselves through the personality of the producer. Chicago Skyway is that outlet's name. The music is energetic, infectious and full of treated house sophistication. A party music for the future that's balanced with the origins of the classics. Sean Hernandez is that ideal balance of being a honed Dj and producer to make an out of the podcast! Here is an example of what he's all about... Black Jazz Consortium - Blessings Atjazz feat. Ernesto - Put It On (Osunlade Club Mix) Efde - CMP135 (Original Mix) Skymark - Find a Place in This Crazy World (Ron Trent Mix) Kyle Hall - 4wrd Motion Chateau Flight - Instant Replay Jimpster - Solitude Hipnotic - Naima (Ian O'Brien Remix) Stefan Ringer - SO Aybee - A Novel Gesture Alton Miller - One Way Back
We're all familiar with the healing power of music, but the Motor City's Whodat has made it her life's mission to spread that through her DJing and productions. Always coming at music with a sense of sincerity that carries over into her infectious sounds, she has released on the likes of Uzuri, Meakusma, and Queen Mum's Mail. Always uplifting and filled with life-affirming melodies, her take on house is all about feeling good and sharing love. On this week's podcast, Whodat's smooth mixing style allows the glory of her selections to shine though. Despite dealing with difficult personal circumstances of her own, on top of the pandemic we've all endured, her music never fails to bring joy. There is warm and diffusive soul from start to finish, with scuffed up beatdown, off-grid Detroit grooves and seductive deep house all adding up to the sort of heartfelt and authentic grooves that the MidWest, and Whodat herself, are so well loved for.

In today’s episode of the Tribe of Suns Podcast our guest, Uzuri shares the birth stories of her 1st pregnancy and her 5th(most recent) pregnancy. The creator, teacher, wife, and mama shares how she gained the wisdom necessary to make her latest birth better than her first. Anxiety and the stories of others permeated her thoughts with her first labor and she was not having that this time around. She protected her peace and only reached out to those that came with that same goodness. We spend a good amount of the episode discussing the importance of supporting mothers and families through pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period. We are responsible to birthing mothers and their families. Uzuri nor I will let you forget that.
This recording was originally posted to our Patreon archive back in June. Once a month we'll share a mix from that archive. It's our first Live And Direct since we had to close our doors due to the pressures of the pandemic. We hope you enjoy and if you'd like to access the full archive and support us as we fight for survival you can do so through www.patreon.com/nowadaysnyc. /// When Lakuti came through for our Nowadays Nonstop Halloween party last year she delivered one of the most memorable moments of our entire year - a stunning three hour set that started at 9am and seamlessly crossed genres rooted in her deeply uplifting, spirited and soulful approach to dance music. Unfortunately, our normally trusty Tascam recorder couldn't handle the heat on that occasion and failed on us, meaning the spectacular sounds from that morning existed only in the moment. Fast-forward six months and thanks to COVID-19 the only dance floor we can safely gather on is the digital one so we reached out to the Uzuri boss in the hope of being able to recreate the magic of that morning last Halloween and helping us shine us a light in super dark times. Across the two hours in this mix she's done exactly that with a beautiful blend of feel-good boogie, delightful disco and sultry, sun-kissed deep house perfect for the balmy evenings of a New York City summer. Huge love to Lerato for being down to put this together for us and help keep us going

If there's one thing you need to know before listening to this mix then it's this: Lerosa does not f**k about. The Italian producer and disc jockey remains an unrivalled force amidst outsider electronics and doesn't buy into hype or false pretenses. Based in Dublin he has steadily released music prominently for over ten years and has appeared on the likes of Uzuri, Ostgut Ton and Idle Hands amongst many more. His sound is always rough and ready, drawing for the experimental and abstract whilst challenging the preconceptions and social constructs of house and electronic music at every possibility available. A keen hardware enthusiast he has a workrate which is hard to rival and this much is clear through the sheer volume of music that he has released in what is a relatively short period of time. His most recent album was released via Acid Test, a sub label of Los Angeles based record label Absurd Recordings. The "Bucket Of Eggs" LP is perhaps Leopold's finest work to date, showcasing an eclectic, thoughtful approach to music that is at times chaotic and coarse. It channels his humour and persona with intrigue and leaves the listener wanting more and more. We invited him to record a mix for the site, a contribution which is long overdue.

Little is known about Stump Valley, but the Italian duo sure did make an impact with their unassuming EPs on Off Minor and Uzuri in the last two years. Before that they had worked solo on numerous projects, and came together over a shared love of vinyl and with the aim of making something “old sounding but modern conceived.” They melt jazz and ambient moods into languorous house soundtracks that suck you down into the deep, and often remix their own material into more urban sounding, street influenced music as Mtrpls. Their mix is unhurried and curious, with spacious jazz and churning, Rhodes laden grooves making way for raw broken beats and much more. A very real human heart lurks beneath every track, from the wild melodic cuts to the more hard hitting deep house thudders. Plotting an unpredictable but inviting arc, our latest podcast is as intriguing as the duo behind it.

Chubby! on Facebook: www.facebook.com/chubbyrecords Slowburn on Facebook: www.facebook.com/pages/Slowburn/167730576584402 @slow_burn Slowburn are Phillip Long and David Hargadon, an Irish duo with an analogue sound palette that extends all the way to vintage Chicago, Detroit and New York planes. Much like their alias suggests, the pair are on a measured but magical rise through the underground ranks, and have been since meeting in the booth a few years ago. First introduced to one another in Dublin (at a night where Phil was warming up for Dave), they soon realised their shared plenty of common musical ground, and since then they’ve been churning out an impressive array of productions with considerable success. Lakuti’s much-revered Uzuri label soon came calling, eventually playing host to Slowburn’s rich and varied sound alongside scene luminaries such as Chicago Skyway, Juju & Jordash and Ksoul & Muteoscillator. A string of releases followed soon after, as the boys followed up on their auspicious start with releases for the likes of Lunar Disko, Apartment,Elecktrosouls, Austere and Appian Sounds as well as on a compilation for the always on-point Grounded in Humanity imprint where they appeared alongside Trax legend, Gene Hunt. “When we make music, we just try and capture the mood at that moment,” say the pair. “We never set out to make anything in particular and we just jam and take things as they come. I guess we usually try to have a strong sense of melody with our pads and always try to and keep a good flow.” When working together in the DJ booth, Slowburn also share a fine understanding of dancefloor dynamics and infectious groove, and have brought their intricate sounds to a host of seminal Irish festivals as well as Manchester’s DEAF Institute. Always joining the dots between the old and the new, Slowburn are a duo with a deep understanding of the discerning side of house and techno. As bright has been their journey to date, Slowburn are only really getting started. A genuinely impressive proposition for fans of connoisseur house sounds, you can expect to hear much more from them over the next few months. Our first release of 2014 at Just Be and its from Estimulo (EstimuloShow, Mixomat Recordings) He brings us a tasty pitched back mix with classic house flavors, deep grooves and disco/electro influences with this superb mix. This is the the sort of mix you could just sit and listen to over and over again with a nice relaxed tempo and vibe at the start that builds into more rawer house sounds, its a really good balanced musical journey and shows what a great Dj/selector Estimulo is. Estimulo caught the music bug in the age of 4, when black and dance groups like Chic appealed to him thru the airwaves of Berlin city. Quickly he started recording music from the radio and cutting his own radio shows and mixes and a tape recorder and reel to reel. Later on in 1983 his grandma gave him what was to become his first vinyl record by legendary hip hop group Whodini. Disco, Soul and Electro Funk were the main influences until in 1988 he first heard a programme called "The Big Beat" that aired on friday night and was pumping all the hot import shit, from HINRG to early house music. Apart from radio, a random find a random find of Chicago House artist Mr Fingers seminal "Ammnesia" album in the bargain bin of some music store in 1989 started his voyage into classic house and techno, mainly from the USA. In 1991 the techno scene exploded in Berlin and the sound was getting harder and harder. Though he was interested in the scene and went to many of the parties, he was naturally drawn towards a deeper and more soulful side of things. He set up his own little pirate station and broadcasted all kinds of electronic beats to his neighborhood. Aside from studying Computer Engineering he was taking first steps into production with the famous Fasttracker software on the Amiga and PC. Putting mixes online followed and in 2001 the mixomat.de page was launched to feature his mixes, followed by the label Mixomat Recordings which released the music of Marco Nega, Immer.Chic, Igor O. Vlasov, Rezkar and Serendipity, just to name a few. In 2007 he moved back to his passion for radio and founded the weekly internet radio show called "EstimuloShow". EstimuloShow has grown into a world-wide collective featuring such presenters as Malcolm Moore (Altered Moods), Truly-Madly, Mike Bishop, Chicagodeep & Taelue and Mick Welch (Elektrosouls Recordings) alongside Estimulo & Makarov. What is more, EstimuloShow has featured guest DJ performances by artists such as Chicago Skyway (Eargasmic, Uzuri), Specter (Tetrode Music, Downbeat), Steven Tang (Emphasis), Simoncino (Mathematics, HotMix, No More Hits). In the past years Estimulo has played venues such as ://about blank, Horst, Paloma Bar, Südblock, Chez Jacki (ex-Maria am Ostbahnhof), Champagneria, Freudenzimmer and Diller as a DJ. The Futura event organisation agency was launched in 2008, to host events in ://about blank, Horst as well as Chez Jacki and M12, and to bring artists like Lowtec (Workshop, USM), Even Tuell (Airbag Craftworks), Keith Worthy (Aesthetic Audio), Gerd Janson (Running Back), I-F (Intergalactic FM, Viewlexx), Arne Weinberg (AW-Recordings, Diametric), Fabrice Lig (R&S, F Communications, Versatile), Rune Lindbaek (Noid, Smalltown Supersound), Simoncino (Mathematics, HotMix, OTP), Kuba Sojka (Mathematics), Malcolm Moore (Altered Moods), Snuff Crew (Snuff Trax, Gigolo, Skylax, Nature) and Hardrock Striker (Skylax) to Berlin on their club nights.
