This week we are talking about one of the longest lived of all royals as part of our ongoing series focused on queen consorts of England and the UK. When little Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon was born at the dawning of the 20th century it would have seemed practically impossible to her family that she would also see the beginning of the 21st, while being one of the most recognisable people in the entire country. It is a story of not following conventions and updating the image of the royal family into the recognisable state it is today, and is one of the few stories we cover where my lifetime overlaps with the subject (which amazed Evie no end.)Guest Host: Evie Heathcote Hosted on Acast. Today, the Church offers us the memorial of the Queenship of Mary. It is a joy to recall that from our Baptism we are made members of the Holy Family: Joseph the Patriarch-Foster Father of the Lord, Jesus our King, and Mary our Queen. In the rule of the Davidic Kings, the queenship was not given to the wife (or wives), but rather to the Queen-Mother. In our case we find ourselves in joy over celebrating this fact today, and we want to realize and act upon this relationship in praise, piety, and petition of her who will present us and our needs to our loving King, Jesus.
Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon was the first non-royal to marry an English monarch in 400 years. She took on the unexpected mantle of Queen when her brother in law abdicated amid scandal and was a national symbol of strength in WWII. As Queen mother she bolstered the reign of her daughter, Queen Elizabeth II. Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! Also mehr „Bunte-Momente“ für eure Ohren gibt´s nirgendwo!
Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon married the Duke of York in 1923, reluctantly joining the royal family. Little more than a decade later, she was at the heart of the abdicating crisis when her husband became King George VI. The new king and queen stabilized the monarchy and inspired the nation during the dark days of World War II. Then in 1952, devastated by the death of her husband, Queen Elizabeth shifted from her role as Queen Consort to Queen Mother, a position she would hold until her death in 2002 at age 101.. Roger McGough, John Gorman and Mike McCartney first performed together sixty years ago and very quickly found fame and success as The Scaffold, combining comedy, poetry and music. With Top 10 singles (including a Number One with Lily The Pink in 1968), a slew of acclaimed live shows, albums, television appearances and collaborations with the likes of the Bonzos (as Grimms), The Scaffold proved to be a unique creative force who could count the Queen Mum and Harold Wilson among their fans. They've reunited for a special show in October at the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool: An Audience With The Scaffold (more details at: An Audience with The Scaffold | Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse theatres (everymanplayhouse.com) ) Like many of their peers and contemporaries they were influenced by The Goons and were happy to talk about growing up listening to the show as well as later encounters with Spike Milligan. We also discover how they first got on TV, why Mike's name went through a few variations, beating Richard Burton to the bar, hobnobbing with Royalty and an explosive evening with Vivian Stanshall. Also: memories of working with Graham Nash, Jack Bruce and Elton John and the time Mike had to give musical direction to Jimi Hendrix! All this and much more!
The Eagles are 1-0 but it seems like people think they lost to Detroit. The Let's Go To The Phones boys declare the Birds to be Super Bowl bound, or that their season is already over, depending on which way you look at it. They place Jonathan Gannon firmly on the hot seat, declare the New York Giants as officially "frisky," and dip back into the Las Vegas Lounge for another set of award winning picks. For our English listeners, the boys also pay their respects to the dear Queen Mum.

Crooks stole the tires and rims off of Owen Wilson's car in front of his house in Santa Monica, Ed Sheeran closed the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Weekend preforming "Perfect" before the Queen Mum made an appearance on the balcony, and Van Leewen Ice Cream is coming out with a GREY POUPON mustard flavored ice cream with pretzel bits...Yikes.

Synopsis When grandma turns 90, you can bet by her age she's gotten just about EVERYTHING imaginable as a birthday gift. That was the quandary facing the Prince of Wales in 1990, when HIS granny, Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth of England—or “The Queen Mum” as just about everybody called her—was about to celebrate her 90th. As Prince Charles wrote: “The idea for a concert came to me when I was trying to think of an original birthday present for my grandmother. It suddenly struck me that here was a wonderful reason for commissioning some new music to celebrate a very special occasion.” Since Charles liked the music that the Scottish composer Patrick Doyle had written for Kenneth Branagh's film of Shakespeare's “Henry V,” Doyle was asked to write a song cycle. The Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich heard about the planned birthday concert, and for his part commissioned the British composer David Matthews. The Swiss conductor and new music impresario Paul Sacher commissioned a third new work from the British composer Patrick Gowers. All three pieces were premiered in the Ballroom of Buckingham Palace on today's date in 1990, two days before the Queen Mum's 90th birthday. Music Played in Today's Program Patrick Doyle (b. 1953) — The Thistle and the Rose (Marie McLaughlin, soprano) Patrick Gowers (b. 1936) — Suite for Violin (Jose Luis Garcia, violin) David Matthews (b. 1943) — Romanza (Mstislav Rostropovich, cello; English Chamber Orchestra; Raymond Leppard, cond.) All three pieces on EMI 54164
We're all familiar with the healing power of music, but the Motor City's Whodat has made it her life's mission to spread that through her DJing and productions. Always coming at music with a sense of sincerity that carries over into her infectious sounds, she has released on the likes of Uzuri, Meakusma, and Queen Mum's Mail. Always uplifting and filled with life-affirming melodies, her take on house is all about feeling good and sharing love. On this week's podcast, Whodat's smooth mixing style allows the glory of her selections to shine though. Despite dealing with difficult personal circumstances of her own, on top of the pandemic we've all endured, her music never fails to bring joy. There is warm and diffusive soul from start to finish, with scuffed up beatdown, off-grid Detroit grooves and seductive deep house all adding up to the sort of heartfelt and authentic grooves that the MidWest, and Whodat herself, are so well loved for.

Episode Overview Andy speaks to Julian Saipe, former opera singer, entrepreneur, business leader, and now an international executive coach and member of the Forbes Coaches Council about the power, benefits and pitfalls of bringing a unified purpose to a business. Julian talks about his experiences of being an entrepreneur and his purpose journey from the solo "vanity trip" to an involving and inspiring collective approach, as he recalls taking Zafferano, one of London's highly acclaimed food and event management brands, from conception to exit over 15 years. In this conversation, they cover topics like opera (!), singing for the Queen Mum, dreams, humanity, authenticity, employee engagement, the role of straplines, reinventing organisations, purpose as a 100 year project and examine what might be behind a leader's struggle to embrace and make the most of having a unifying purpose driving their business forwards. Plus, Julian leaves behind his 3 Sticky Notes on the virtual walls of the Sticky From The Inside studio, in an attempt to help you successfully think about and develop your own unifying purpose. Kentucky, our beautiful state, is often the butt of bad jokes and dismissed through negative stereotypes. You know, like "we don't wear shoes when riding our horses down dirt streets, slugging homemade moonshine out of a clay jug with three x's on it." Anyway, today on TaLoT we talk about some of the fantastic contributions that Kentucky has made to society. Also on the table for discussion: What Kentucky item the Queen Mum stuffed into her jacket pockets and smuggled back to merry old England from the states. Having gotten everything he wanted by the end of last week's chapter, Sun Wukong starts to get a little too chummy with the officials in heaven. They're trying to do a job, and he's acting like a total bro! Thankfully, the legendary Xu Sun has a plan--put him in charge of the Immortal Peach Garden, but don't let him have any--what could possibly go wrong? Well, if heaven hasn't learned its lesson yet, we're all about to... give a monkey a job, and simian shenanigans are bound to ensue, especially if it involves forbidden fruit. Join Richard and James as we continue to update the Monkey King's LinkedIn profile, meet the Queen Mum above, and find out what happens when you harass her assistants!
The households have split! The Queen had a date with Kate! Meg and Henry went on a babymoon, and there is a literal war of the roses as Kate's Chelsea Flower Show submission goes head to head with ... somebody else's. Oh - and the last three minutes are cut off on this episode, we do apologise. We were talking about how much the Queen Mum loved a tipple, but sadly it's been lost to the ether. Just know she did. She really did. We end up on a deep chat about Andrew and Fergie and their "are-they-or-aren't-they" rumours, to which we both say: "duh". They never really even broke up (hate to break it to you, Johnny Bryan). Amazing as it may seem we are back again after just a fortnight...instead of nearly four year. Madden is reminded of Missy's elusive concept of time as well as dealing with a pretty poor week. Fortunately they are soon turning their attentions to Ticks that make people allergic to red meat, a two mile sniper shot, at broken $35,000 bracelet and someone grassing up the Queen. What more could you ask for in a podcast?
Yukon's Sourdough Rendezvous Festival was quite an amazing time. it happened last weekend and Jeremy Bradley reported live on the radio. Kelly & Tom are joined by Kelly’s internet love, illustrator & cartoonist Levi Hastings, for their recap of The Crown S1E8. The hosts are really coming around on the show, and they appreciate the character development of the Queen Mum, wish that everyone could impulse buy a castle when they are sad, take the controversial position that patriarchy is no fun, love the comedy stylings of Princess Margaret, get excited about Liz’s gay fashion designer, and suffer from Nazi fatigue. Kelly finally gets around to doing a Fashion Backwards, Tom thinks Justin Trudeau is too good for him, and Levi reminds us that one cannot do self care without a self to care for.
