If your kids are playing video games, you can sometimes see them getting frustrated at the game. Watch out for a quick temper and see if the game has got control over their moodKids are not able to self-soothe when they’re playing video games. This translates into the next point, which is having problems going to sleep or waking up in the morningHaving access to a device every night. If we let our kids use devices without limits set, without some rules and structure, they’re going to take their devices to bed with them and they’re going to be up at night browsing social media or playing games. Research says, allowing your child to have a TV or device in their room unchecked at night results in less sleep and having a harder time waking up in the morningPassing up face-to-face activities for screen time activities. Another major red flag is when you see your child passing up normal opportunities for socialization or outside playWhat can parents do?Before giving your student access to a new game, ask them to explain why they want to play it. Then, spend some time playing the game on your own and decide if it is safe for your family to play. Know that your child has perhaps already played it at their friend’s houseSchedule game time and set time limits beforehandTeach your children that video games are only to be played in moderation (or, best of all, as a family)Challenge your student to find offline activities they enjoy and can add to their resumeHave an open dialog about video games with your children. When Americans awoke the morning after the midterm elections last November, they found the halls of Congress littered by the detritus of broken taboos and traditions. In the most multicultural, multiracial democratic experiment in the country's history, the newly elected freshman class smashed stereotypes by including more women, people of color, young people or LGBTQ lawmakers than ever before. This class of Democratic freshmen jumped in head first, shattering routines on the Hill and social media. But getting down to legislating was trickier as their first weeks were marred by the longest shutdown in U.S. history; between moving into their offices and finding the bathrooms, they had to endure a crash course in the roughhouse politics of partisan gridlock. Now five of these outspoken "Freshmen Furies," as they've become known, are joining the August 25 Conversations On the Green to discuss their history making experiences. The five Democrats - New York's Antonio Delgado, Iowa's Abby Finkenauer, Connecticut's Jahana Hayes, Florida's Donna Shalala, and Michigan's Elissa Slotkin - will talk about what they expected and what they found, the jubilation of their election and the frustrations of the job, what they've accomplished and what's next on their agenda to move the country forward. The first person of color to be elected to Congress from upstate New York, Antonio Delgado is a Rhodes Scholar, a graduate of Harvard Law School and a former Los Angeles-based rapper known as AD The Voice. A rock star among the freshman, his magnetic personality catapulted him to triumph over six other candidates in the Democratic primary of his overwhelmingly white swing district before defeating the favored Republican incumbent John Faso in the November general election. Abby Finkenauer, who was 29-years-old when elected, is the second youngest person - behind New York's Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez - to ever serve in Congress and along with Cindy Axne the first women to represent Iowa in the House. The daughter of a welder and a school employee, she won a seat in the state House when she was 25 and defeated two opponents in the 2018 Democratic primary before retiring incumbent Republican Representative Rod Blum in the general election. The first African American woman to represent Connecticut in the House, Jahana Hayes seemed destined to follow a familial pattern when, like her mother and grandmother, she became pregnant as a 17-year-old and dropped out. But she returned to school and, while working, earned college and teaching degrees before being named 2016 National Teacher of Year. She ran on her dedication to education and her trials growing up in the Waterbury projects, which she said gave her special insight into how policy affects people. "I know what it's like to go to bed to gunshots outside," she said at a candidate forum. "I know what it's like to wake up in the morning to a dead body in the hallway." A standout in the 2019 class of youthful Democratic freshmen, Florida's Donna Shalala is an academic and Washington veteran who served for eight years as President Bill Clinton's Secretary of Health and Human Services, the longest tenure of any of the department's leaders. The former head of the Children's Defense Fund, she was president of the Clinton Foundation from 2015 to 2017 and headed the University of Miami for 14 years. Previously she was the President of Hunter College and chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and served as Trustee Professor of Political Science and Health Policy at the University of Miami. A former CIA analyst and senior staffer for the Director of National Intelligence, Elissa Slotkin said she was spurred to challenge two-term Republican incumbent Mike Bishop when she saw him smile at a White House celebration after he and the Republicans in the House of Representatives voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act. A native New Yorker, she grew up in Holly, halfway between Flint and Detroit, and graduated from Cornell University before becoming a community organizer. She won the general election with a bare majority of the vote, 50.6 percent, becoming the first Democrat to represent the district since 2001. Moderated by Jane Whitney, former NBC News correspondent & talk show host. Audience members are encouraged to participate in the interactive town-hall style format. All proceeds benefit: Greenwoods Counseling Referrals, Inc. - Helping members of the Litchfield County Community and beyond find access to compassionate and high-quality mental health and related care. View the top 70+ good and bad teen apps in our Popular App Guide page for Parents and Educators. We sat down with Dr. Mike Bishop, tech addiction expert, to talk about kids’ technology addiction. Learn what red flags indicate that your child has screen time issues, how to develop positive screen time habits, and the importance of having a dialog between you and your children once they have their own device. Technology Addiction Key Takeaways As parents, a major red flag to look out for is when your child starts passing up normal opportunities for socialization or outside play. If a child’s only interactions are through screen activities, they’re missing out on a ton of social learning opportunities. Not all screen time is equal. Kids are more engaged when they’re using an iPad, tablet, phone, or playing a video game than when they’re just watching a television show. Parents need to explain to their children the reasons why each screen time guideline is being set. If students don’t understand why they should not use something, then they’ll probably find a way to get around it. What are some red flags that your child has screen time behavioral issues? Short tempers that are aggravated by screen time If your kids are playing video games, you can sometimes see them getting frustrated at the game. Watch out for a quick temper and see if the game has taken control over their mood. Kids are not able to self-soothe when they’re playing video games. This translates into the next point I have, which is problems going to sleep or waking up in the morning. Having access to a device every night If we let our kids use devices without setting limits, without some rules and structure, they take their devices to bed with them and they’re up at night browsing social media or playing games. Research shows that allowing your child to have a TV or device in their room unchecked at night results in less sleep and difficulty waking up in the morning. Passing up face-to-face activities for screen time activities Another major red flag is when you see your child passing up normal opportunities for socialization or outside play. There’s a lot of social learning that goes on with neighborhood pickup games. If a child’s only interactions are through screen activities, they’re missing out on a ton of social learning opportunities. What are some common misconceptions parents have when it comes to screen time? Remember, your kids are more engaged when they’re using an iPad, tablet, phone or playing a video game, than when they’re watching a television show. Research says kids with a TV in their room sleep less at night on average. They go to bed later and then they sleep later. The impact differs depending on which study you look at, but the overwhelming consensus in the scientific community is that having a screen in your child’s room when they should be asleep impacts sleep across the board. Some parents believe that the television will lull the child into going to sleep. When you look at the big picture, the costs outweigh the benefits of having a TV in your child’s room. How can parents help their children develop positive screen time habits? Children need limits when parents first introduce the device to them. How parents go about enforcing or explaining those limits is critical. Parents shouldn’t approach it from the authoritarian standpoint. Instead, they have to explain to the child why each guideline is being set. Develop that intrinsic motivation in the child to understand what the limits and dangers are. Help them understand the effect of screen activity on their sleep, grades, and overall brain development. Why is it important to have a dialog with children once they have their own device? Unfortunately, kids lack the ability to predict the consequences of their behavior. They don’t have the life experiences that we do as adults. Parents have to discuss the risks of social media and devices with their kids and help them understand. Explain to your student what can happen if they conduct themselves in a certain way, are in contact with certain people, or are looking at certain content. Parents can break these down into the three C’s; inappropriate conduct, inappropriate contact, and inappropriate content. Explain the differences between each, why each one presents its own hazards, and what could happen. What are “The Three C’s”? Conduct The first one is conduct. Kids are not as anonymous as they think they are online. Sometimes kids start sharing memes or creating fake accounts on Instagram and think that no one will find out. Students don’t understand there are serious consequences for this type of conduct. They can get in some real trouble and these kinds of things don’t go away. Inappropriate contacts The second one is inappropriate contacts. This one’s pretty straightforward for most kids. There are people out there with bad intentions, like an online bully in their school. Through trolling, they can make an identity of someone else and make fun of them. There are also real sexual predators out there online, looking for kids to victimize. Inappropriate content The third one is inappropriate content, such as online pornography and violent websites. Parents have to explain to their children the dangers of this type of content. Teach kids that they need to nourish their brain with healthy images, instead of spending their time looking at negative content online. What advice do you have for parents of children who have their own device? If parents take anything away from this conversation, it should be that they really need to explain to their kids the reason why there are limits. Whether it’s with time, with who to contact, or the websites and apps children use. Parents have to explain why that is so that kids can comprehend and value these guidelines. If students don’t understand why they should not use something, then they’ll probably find a way to get around it. Conclusion Even though screen time can sometimes have a positive impact on students, it’s important to keep an eye out for technology addiction red flags. Some red flags that can indicate your child is struggling with too much screen time are short tempers that are aggravated by screen time, passing up face-to-face activities for screen time activities, and having access to their devices at night. You can help your children develop positive screen time habits by setting limits, explaining why each guideline is being set, and discussing the negative impact excessive screen time can have on them. Help your children understand the consequences of having poor conduct on social media, connecting with strangers online, and viewing dangerous or inappropriate content. The most important thing to remember when working with your children is to explain the why. This helps them understand and value your guidelines. Topics covered in this Parent Safety Guide: The negative impact video games can have on students Red flags to look out for What to do if your child is spending too much time playing video games How to set limitations Prevention tips Topics to help start a dialog The negative effects of video games on students A Canadian study from McGill University shows that human-computer interactions, such as playing video games, can have a negative impact on the brain. Some negative effects of videos games are: Noticeable changes to behavior Ignoring or not prioritizing responsibilities or interests over game time Continuing to play games despite the negative impact it may have Difficulty sleeping or changes in sleep patterns Declining grades or difficulty in school Can lead to social isolation Poor time management skills Popular video games with teens and tweens: Fortnite: Battle Royale Minecraft Call of Duty Grand Theft Auto PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (similar to Fortnite) League Of Legends Why should parents care? Some parents believe that their kids are safe online if they don’t have social media. However, if they play video games they are still at risk You may think you’re aware of your child’s game play, but if they’re wearing a headset and playing in multiplayer mode, they are a million miles away When your kid is playing video games in multiplayer mode they’re talking to people you don’t know. They’re talking to people who do not love your child as much as you do Too much game time can have a negative impact on your student’s health The Negative Effects of Video Games in the News "We don’t need research to see the negative impact of gaming in some people’s lives. Many of us see it in our families, where young kids might isolate themselves at the expense of almost everything else life has to offer. Gaming by design – like social media – preys on some of the same thinking we see in young people with substance use disorder: fatalism, impulsivity and the desire for instant gratification — and much more so than in the past." –Daily Herald "Schools warn parents of ‘negative effects’ of video game on students. Several Australian schools have issued advice to parents about potential for bullying or abuse." –The Guardian "It’s quite possible that excessive time spent playing games — as with any hobby — may be unhealthy or a sign that someone is struggling." –Business Insider Gaming disorder is considered a mental health condition In 2018, the World Health Organization officially began recognizing gaming disorder as a mental health condition The Internal Classification of Diseases is the foundation for identifying health trends and statistics worldwide In the latest edition of its Internal Classification of Diseases, the World Health Organization officially recognized gaming disorder What are gaming disorder warning signs? According to World Health Organization, there are 3 signs that someone might be struggling with gaming disorder: Impaired control over gaming (e.g. onset, frequency, intensity, duration, termination, context) Increasing priority given to gaming to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other life interests and daily activities Continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences What are some red flags parents need to look out for? According to Dr. Mike Bishop, tech addiction expert, these red flags indicate that your child is struggling with screen time and gaming: Short tempers that are aggravated by screen time. If your kids are playing video games, you can sometimes see them getting frustrated at the game. Watch out for a quick temper and see if the game has got control over their mood. Kids are not able to self-soothe when they’re playing video games. This translates into the next point, which is having problems going to sleep or waking up in the morning. Having access to a device every night. If we let our kids use devices without limits set, without some rules and structure, they’re going to take their devices to bed with them and they’re going to be up at night browsing social media or playing games. Research says, allowing your child to have a TV or device in their room unchecked at night results in less sleep and having a harder time waking up in the morning. Passing up face-to-face activities for screen time activities. Another major red flag is when you see your child passing up normal opportunities for socialization or outside play. There’s a lot of social learning that goes on with neighborhood pickup games (basketball, baseball, etc). If a child’s only interactions are through screen activities, they’re missing out on a ton of social learning opportunities. What can parents do? Before giving your student access to a new game, ask them to explain why they want to play it. Then, spend some time playing the game on your own and decide if it is safe for your family to play Know that your child has perhaps already played it at their friend’s house Schedule game time and set time limits beforehand Teach your children that video games are only to be played in moderation (and, best of all, as a family) Challenge your student to find offline activities they enjoy and can add to their resume Have an open dialog about video games with your children. Consider talking about the dangers of playing with strangers, sharing personal information in chats, graphic video game content, and bullying behavior Having these discussions with your children will help them understand why game time guidelines are set and can encourage them to self-regulate their behavior Model positive screen time behaviors around your children Always supervise game time (and play with them, if possible) Talk to your students about what can happen if they conduct themselves in a certain way, or are in contact with certain people, or are looking at certain content during game time Consider requiring household tasks be done to earn game time

Our first release of 2014 at Just Be and its from Estimulo (EstimuloShow, Mixomat Recordings) He brings us a tasty pitched back mix with classic house flavors, deep grooves and disco/electro influences with this superb mix. This is the the sort of mix you could just sit and listen to over and over again with a nice relaxed tempo and vibe at the start that builds into more rawer house sounds, its a really good balanced musical journey and shows what a great Dj/selector Estimulo is. Estimulo caught the music bug in the age of 4, when black and dance groups like Chic appealed to him thru the airwaves of Berlin city. Quickly he started recording music from the radio and cutting his own radio shows and mixes and a tape recorder and reel to reel. Later on in 1983 his grandma gave him what was to become his first vinyl record by legendary hip hop group Whodini. Disco, Soul and Electro Funk were the main influences until in 1988 he first heard a programme called "The Big Beat" that aired on friday night and was pumping all the hot import shit, from HINRG to early house music. Apart from radio, a random find a random find of Chicago House artist Mr Fingers seminal "Ammnesia" album in the bargain bin of some music store in 1989 started his voyage into classic house and techno, mainly from the USA. In 1991 the techno scene exploded in Berlin and the sound was getting harder and harder. Though he was interested in the scene and went to many of the parties, he was naturally drawn towards a deeper and more soulful side of things. He set up his own little pirate station and broadcasted all kinds of electronic beats to his neighborhood. Aside from studying Computer Engineering he was taking first steps into production with the famous Fasttracker software on the Amiga and PC. Putting mixes online followed and in 2001 the mixomat.de page was launched to feature his mixes, followed by the label Mixomat Recordings which released the music of Marco Nega, Immer.Chic, Igor O. Vlasov, Rezkar and Serendipity, just to name a few. In 2007 he moved back to his passion for radio and founded the weekly internet radio show called "EstimuloShow". EstimuloShow has grown into a world-wide collective featuring such presenters as Malcolm Moore (Altered Moods), Truly-Madly, Mike Bishop, Chicagodeep & Taelue and Mick Welch (Elektrosouls Recordings) alongside Estimulo & Makarov. What is more, EstimuloShow has featured guest DJ performances by artists such as Chicago Skyway (Eargasmic, Uzuri), Specter (Tetrode Music, Downbeat), Steven Tang (Emphasis), Simoncino (Mathematics, HotMix, No More Hits). In the past years Estimulo has played venues such as ://about blank, Horst, Paloma Bar, Südblock, Chez Jacki (ex-Maria am Ostbahnhof), Champagneria, Freudenzimmer and Diller as a DJ. The Futura event organisation agency was launched in 2008, to host events in ://about blank, Horst as well as Chez Jacki and M12, and to bring artists like Lowtec (Workshop, USM), Even Tuell (Airbag Craftworks), Keith Worthy (Aesthetic Audio), Gerd Janson (Running Back), I-F (Intergalactic FM, Viewlexx), Arne Weinberg (AW-Recordings, Diametric), Fabrice Lig (R&S, F Communications, Versatile), Rune Lindbaek (Noid, Smalltown Supersound), Simoncino (Mathematics, HotMix, OTP), Kuba Sojka (Mathematics), Malcolm Moore (Altered Moods), Snuff Crew (Snuff Trax, Gigolo, Skylax, Nature) and Hardrock Striker (Skylax) to Berlin on their club nights.
