The Forth Bridges Trail is a five-mile circular route which brings together various points of interest in North and South Queensferry and crosses the Forth Road Bridge. New stops were added onto the route earlier this year, so Mark took a wander along part of it to hear about the area's fascinating history. When you think of Beaver reintroduction sites you probably imagine the Cairngorms, Knapdale or rural Tayside but certainly not the heart of London. A few weeks ago, Rachel went to visit The Ealing Beaver Project where beavers are making their home right beside a retail park! Dr Sean McCormack gave her a tour and explained how they hope the beavers, who have been relocated from Scotland, might help with flooding in the area.At the end of the summer Mark visited Loch Katrine, home to the Steamship Sir Walter Scott. But the Loch is also home to other boats and Mark went to speak to one man who's been restoring his very own steamship. We're joined live by Dr Cat Barlow, project manager with the South of Scotland Golden Eagle Project who tells us about their plans to expand and re-introduce the species to England and Wales following their success in Scotland.Next month, the winners of the BBC's Food and Farming Awards will be unveiled at a ceremony in Glasgow. Out of Doors and Landward have our own category – the BBC Scotland Food Hero award. Over the past few weeks Rachel has been visiting the three finalists, and this week we hear from the Cosaig Growers. Back in 2016, Kate Wieteska and Jake Butcher bought a challenging piece of land on a hill in the north west Highlands and since then they've completely transformed it in order to grow fruit and vegetables. Rachel paid them a visit while they were getting on with some scything. We hear a short Islay folktale recorded on our recent trip to the island which is home to lots of fantastic myths and stories. In this week's Scotland Outdoors podcast we feature the latest instalment of Mark's journey along the Stevenson Way which is based on the novel Kidnapped. We hear an extract where Mark hears about a real event, the Appin Murder of 1752 which is one of the most notorious of its kind in Scottish history.

Alas, we have reached the final episode of season five of Sean's Wild Life podcast. And perhaps the final episode of the podcast entirely as I'm hanging up my podcast boots for the time being, So it seemed fitting to invite back our first ever guest to be our final one. Jules Howard is a zoologist, author, science communicator and broadcaster with a nifty perspective on the natural world. His latest book, 'Infinite Life' explores the story of evolution through the perspective of the egg. Some terrific insights and wondrous facts ensue. We also chat about his previous book, 'Wonderdog: How the Science of Dogs Changed the Science of Life'. And we couldn't let another catchup go by without talking about ponds, our mutual love of frogs and that fateful trip to an equine stud farm.Sean's Wild Life podcast is produced by Sean McCormack, co-produced and edited by Thomas Ntinas. Dan O'Neill is a wildlife expert and biologist. He's also the first openly gay wildlife presenter. In this Open Country he's in London to discover what ‘rewilding' means for the capital. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, launched the ‘Rewild London Fund' to help make London a leader in urban rewilding, from restoring rivers to reintroducing species currently absent from the capital. One of them is the beaver and at Paradise Fields in Ealing, just down the road from the busy Greenford tube station, a family of five beavers have just been introduced to their new home by conservationist and vet Dr Sean McCormack. Together they will transform a gritty urban wasteland into a wildlife haven with ecosystem benefits for residents' wellbeing and flood defences. The beavers are just one example of the huge growth in biodiversity in the city. As Dan travels from Ealing in the West to the east of the city at The Paddocks in Tottenham Hale, he discovers that there is also growing diversity in the conservation community. He meets LGQBT conservationist Izzy Knight who shares his passion for everything wild and celebrates the ‘Queer Nature' festival at Kew, before heading back to Ealing to see whether he can spot those elusive beavers in their new home.Produced by Helen Lennard
Sean McCormack is a consultant Vet, the Chairperson of Ealing Wildlife Group, and an incredibly knowledgeable nature conservationist and educator based in west London. This episode is part 2 of our conversation where we get into more detail on: The practicalities of reintroducing beavers to an urban parkManagement of urban natureRewilding vs nature restorationThe importance of partnerships and collaborationI also got the chance to speak with Elliot Newton and Ben Stockwell of Citizen Zoo, who are also involved in the beaver reintroduction at Paradise Fields. In years gone by a walk through farmland wouldn't be complete without passing a pond or two. But sadly they're increasingly rare on farms, but why? In this episode we head down to the farm to find out more about why rather than filling them in, farmers are now understanding the benefits that ponds can have in creating biodiversity. Riverford in Devon is one of the UK's most well known organic farms and they're bringing new life to the land, such as helping to provide homes for hungry toads, who are keeping the slugs off your lettuces. Riverford founder Guy Singh-Watson tells us all about it and how his perceptions of ponds have changed throughout his life. We also head to Ealing Wildlife Group in London to meet vet and conservationist Sean McCormack who's work there is helping to preserve the Great Crested Newt in ponds which were once farmland ponds. Megan also learns about insect chimneys and ghost ponds from WWT's Principal Research Officer, Dr Sarah Davies. Featuring: Guy Singh-Watson and Anna David from Riverford, Dr Sarah Davies (Principal Research Officer, WWT) and Dr Sean McCormack. Presented by Megan McCubbin. If listening to this podcast inspires you to take action for wetlands and find out more then visit wwt.org.uk Waterlands is a series brought to you by the WWT. It's an 18Sixty production, the producer is Melvin Rickarby and original music is by Noah Bloom.
Sean McCormack is a consultant Vet, the Chairperson of Ealing Wildlife Group, and an incredibly knowledgeable nature conservationist and educator based in west London. In this episode we discuss his work to rewild urban London by reintroducing harvest mice, beavers and (eventually maybe) water voles while supporting native predators like falcons and owls in the city. It's a really positive and inspiring story of how a community and a local government are working together for the good of nature. We also discuss how reintroducing beavers will mitigate flooding in the local area and advice for others interested in urban rewilding and nature conservation.Sean was very generous with his time and we ended up talking for 2 hours, so this episode is part 1 of that conversation. Part 2 is coming soon!See photos of the locations being rewilded at the companion blog post: Substack blogLearn more about Ealing Wildlife Group: https://ealingwildlifegroup.com/Thanks for listening!Support the Podcast by Donation or via Substack.Green Urbanist website Contact Ross Substack Linkedin Twitter Instagram
I caught up with naturalist, writer, wilding ecologist and TikToker extraordinaire Pete Cooper to indulge in his passion for the smaller, less glamorous species reintroductions happening in the UK at present. We delved into making Glow Worm porridge (that's made for Glow Worms, not with Glow Worms by the way!), the success of our Ealing Harvest Mouse reintroduction project which Pete has helped facilitate and some of the controversies around rewilding in general, particularly when it comes to species reintroductions. I LOVE wildlife.......but I LOVE dogs. My two jobs, the podcast & running a professional dog walking company both (obviously) envolve, heavily, these two things, but do they, or can they, go together happily? There's always a lot of chat about how much domestic dogs disturb wildlife or damage habitat & the answers always seem to be lost in amongst the arguments so I decided to mix the two sides together & have vet & conservationist Sean McCormack on to tell us about what the issues are & then to have professional dog walker, dog trainer & business owner Zoe Macdonald on to tell us dog owners, the best ways we can be walking our dogs without allowing them to disturb or damage wildlife. Prepare for LOLZ. I caught up with my pal Chantelle, CBeebies presenter of teeny Tiny Creatures, Great North Wood project officer for London Wildlife Trust and Future Advisor for former podcast guests Heal Rewilding. I would say we had a great chat but truth is we laughed our way through lots of topics. But on a serious note we did explore why there is a lack of diversity in the nature and conservation space, how things are improving and can be improved further, what it's like to be a young, black woman working in wildlife conservation and how she's coping with a brand new media career. I caught up with Gareth Steel, vet and author of new book 'Never Work With Animals' which lifts the lid on what it's really like being a vet. We discuss why he wrote the book, some of the stories it contains and how the perception Vs reality of the job often differ when it comes to the general public. Not many know the fact that veterinary medicine has the highest rate of suicide of any profession as well as issues with mental health, burnout and a high departure rate. We discuss the complex factors that feed into this problem, as well as some of the difficult topics like the use of alternative therapies in pets, balancing economic concerns of pet owners and farmers with animal welfare and of course some of the entertaining and positive experiences of what it means to be a vet. A must listen episode for anyone who ever thought "Oh I'd love to have been a vet" or has children interested in joining the profession. In this episode we're moving away from wildlife and nature conservation to a serious animal welfare issue I face in my career as a vet, exploring the issues of flat faced or brachycephalic dog breeds. I'm joined by two incredibly knowledgeable guests, Alison Skipper and Dr Rowena Packer. Alison is a vet studying a PhD in the history of pedigree dog breeding and welfare. Rowena is a companion animal behaviour and welfare scientist at the Royal Vet College. Together we explore when and why the trend for flat faced dogs appeared, why they are popular, what problems they suffer from as a result of their extreme appearance and what can be done about it. It's a fascinating insight into a complex topic.Dr Packer is recruiting recent puppy owners for a survey in to pandemic puppy ownership, so if you fit the bill please do partake by 11th March here: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/Pups2021Cover image courtesy of CRUFFA (Campaign for the Responsible Use of Flat Faced Animals in Advertising. https://www.facebook.com/groups/cruffa).Sean's Wild Life podcast is produced by Sean McCormack, co-produced and edited by Thomas Ntinas. It's a podcast crossover episode this time as I meet with fellow podcaster Ryan Dalton, host of the excellent nature podcast 'Into the Wild' (https://intothewild.podbean.com/). I brought Ryan to a top secret location last Spring to find adders, Britain's only venomous reptile as he'd only recently seen his first one and wanted to see more. I visit this site each year and told him I'd guarantee him some adders to photograph and marvel at. Maybe even find a legendary black adder? We weren't only there for a snake hunt however. We wanted to explore and discuss a topic we'd chatted about several times before, our pet's impact on nature and wildlife. With me as a vet and Ryan as a 'doggy daycare' business owner but also both passionate conservationists, there is an uncomfortable conflict at times in advocating for pets V's nature. Many pet owners don't even realise the impact their pets are having. And with the colossal rise in pet ownership since the pandemic began, we ask whether our growing pet population is pushing sensitive wildlife and habitats closer and closer to the brink. A tricky topic, but important to educate and support pet owners to minimises the damage that can be done without even realising.Oh and make sure to listen to the end, something funny and adder-shaped happens!Sean's Wild Life podcast is produced by Sean McCormack, co-produced and edited by Thomas Ntinas. On a trip home to Ireland I took a wander with my Dad on Christmas Eve on his friend, Anthony Mooney's farm, where biodiversity is treated with just as much importance as beef production. Anthony tells us about the habitat features he's brought back to the landscape, how his haymaking approach benefits wildlife more than intensive silage production, his recent re-wetting experiment of one of his fields and his part in the Irish 'Protecting Farmland Pollinators' scheme. Come along on a farmland walk with myself , my Dad Tom McCormack (ex-Chair of Birdwatch Ireland Kildare branch) and Anthony Mooney, one of Ireland's most nature friendly farmers.Sean's Wild Life podcast is produced by Sean McCormack, co-produced and edited by Thomas Ntinas.
