Welcome to another episode of Outrage + Optimism. As always, we examine issues at the forefront of the climate crisis, interview change-makers, and transform our anger into productive dialogue on building a sustainable future. In this episode, co-hosts Christiana Figueres, Tom Rivett-Carnac, and Paul Dickinson reflect on the recent downfall of British Prime Minister (PM) Boris Johnson and what comes next for U.K. climate initiatives, with guests Ben Goldsmith, Founder of the Conservative Environment Network, and Chris Skidmore, MP for Kingswood, near Bristol. Despite Johnson's decidedly mixed term as PM一including delivering on Brexit, recent Partygate blunders, and other scandals一he has kept the U.K. focused on climate and nature progress. He's embraced Net zero by 2050, introduced ambitious goals for 2035, and supported the Conference of the Parties summit (COP26). But what do the hosts think? And, where does the U.K. go from here? With the interests of the global right generally focused on issues such as immigration, and new Tory leadership on the horizon, will climate and nature continue to be relevant to the U.K. conservative project? Guests Ben Goldsmith and Chris Skidmore weigh in on this dynamic moment.   NOTES AND RESOURCES    For more on conservative environmentalism in the U.K. and overseas visit the Conservative Environment Network.  Chris Skidmore, MP, Kingswood Learn more about the United Nation's Net zero initiative and the COP26.  Read Chris Skidmore's recent piece with Zac Goldsmith, ‘Ditching Net Zero would be electoral suicide for Conservatives'. “Hustings” is defined as a meeting at which candidates in an election address potential voters. There's no pathway to capping our global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius without protecting and restoring nature. That's the lay of the land according to The Rt Hon Lord Goldsmith, Minister for the Pacific and the International Environment - our final guest for 2021. At the close of a year that's seen enormous momentum to incorporate forests and land use well and truly into the climate agenda, Lord Goldsmith shares insights into the context and his vision for the next twelve months. So, where do we stand now? Among the remarkable outcomes of COP26 was a commitment to halting and reversing forest loss and land degradation by 2030. Signed by 141 countries, the Glasgow Leaders' Declaration on Forest and Land Use covers an incredible 90 percent of global forest. We also saw meaningful progress at this year's Convention on Biological Diversity in Kunming. And the direction of travel? Our ultimate challenge and goal, Lord Goldsmith says, is to reconcile our economy with our natural world – and now has to be the turning point. So! Join us for a reflection on some major moments on the podcast this past year and a look into this turning point moment. Can we reduce emissions by 7% each consecutive year from here on out? More than any other single person, Zac Goldsmith - or The Right Honourable Lord Goldsmith of Richmond Park as he is properly known – is responsible for the UK Conservative Party’s relatively recent conversion to the cause of the environment.   Bio Zac Goldsmith has devoted his entire professional life to the environment – first as editor of the Ecologist magazine, then as an MP and London Mayoral candidate, and now as a Conservative life peer in the House of Lords, where he serves as Minister for Pacific and the Environment at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.   As Minister of State, Zac Goldsmith is responsible for forestry and biodiversity, biodiversity and climate and illegal wildlife trade as well as the Pacific region. As Minister of DEFRA (Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs), Goldsmith is currently working on getting COP15 on Biodiversity  and  COP26 closer. He recently formed the Global Ocean Alliance that grouped 30 countries to sign a pledge to improve the protection of the ocean by devoting 30% of area of global oceans covered by protection.   Zac Goldsmith was awarded a life peerage in 2019. Before that he was MP for Richmond Park between 2010 and 2016 and between 2017 and 2019. Zac Goldsmith worked at The Ecologist magazine – founded by his uncle Edward Goldsmith – for 9 years and was editor between 2000 and 2005. He cites Gerald Durrell and David Attenborough as early influences. About Cleaning Up Once a week Michael Liebreich has a conversation (and a drink) with a leader in clean energy, mobility, climate finance or sustainable development. Each episode covers the technical ground on some aspect of the low-carbon transition – but it also delves into the nature of leadership in the climate transition: whether to be optimistic or pessimistic; how to communicate in order to inspire change; personal credos; and so on. And it should be fun – most of the guests are Michael’s friends. Follow Cleaning Up on Twitter: https://twitter.com/MLCleaningUp Follow Cleaning Up on Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/cleaning-up-with-michael-liebreich/?viewAsMember=true Follow Cleaning Up on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MLCleaningUp Links to other Podcast Platforms: https://www.cleaningup.live

Lily speaks to four environmentalists who share similar aims but very different pathways: an MP and Minister working with and within the UK government; activists activity rebelling against the UK government; law makers and law breakers. Guests include the UK’s Conservative Environmental Minister Zac Goldsmith, Green Party MP Caroline Lucas, environmental lawyer and activist Farhana Yamin and co-founder of Extinction Rebellion Gail Bradbrook. This is Episode 16 of the State of the Theory Podcast. Politics. Power. Popular Culture. And other stuff, probably. In this series, we’re like super nerdy philosophical DJs: mashing up Serious Academic Questions with the most topical news and trends in pop culture. Each week, we’ll tackle a new topic and collide it with ‘critical theory’ (we’re pretty loose with our definitions, though, so expect the unexpected). Our aim is to destroy the stuff we know, explore the stuff we don’t and unsettle everything we think we know about the world. We take the obvious, the commonsensical, the certain, and then we rip it all to shreds. We are your theory doctors and we are always on call. In this episode, we look at recent London mayoral election race. We examine the ways in which colonial history, race and Islamophobia featured in the way the campaigns were run, and the ways in which the election was covered. Specifically, we critique the way in which Zac Goldsmith, Conservative candidate, tried to build support among London's south Asian communities. The texts we refer to are: "Dominance Without Hegemony: History and Power in Colonial India" by Ranajit Guha (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dominance-without-Hegemony-Convergences-Inventories-y/dp/0674214838) "The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order" by Samuel P. Zac Goldsmith has joined the Tory Toffs who say they can manage events by trusting some very nasty people. [LISTEN TO PODCAST HERE]Edited transcript:Zac Goldsmith, editor of the Ecologist magazine, had some kind of problem with Monsanto involving an article written by Brian Tokar back in 1998, the first run of 14,000 copies were destroyed and after that some high street newsagents refused to sell them. Zac is a partner of a bookmaking firm called Fitzdares in London, his associates are James Osborne MP and Taki Theodoracopulos, Taki did three months in Prison for trying to smuggle 23 grams of Cocaine into the UK. (How could Fitzdares get a license when a convicted drug smuggler is "involved"?)The Washington Post wrote on December 25, 2004: “The anti-Coke campaign has been called by its founders (Karmabanque) a "smart boycott." Goldsmith said he believes he can push Coca-Cola shares to as low as $22.” Goldsmith later said: "The hedge fund is not mine in any sense I didn't set it up. I haven't provided financial support, and I do not manage it. Any suggestion to the contrary is false." Zac Goldsmith now works with a John Gummer MP who is on the Coca-cola environmental advisory boardDavid Cameron said: “Who better than Coca Cola, a firm with a better distribution network in sub-Saharan Africa than any aid agency, to get materials out to needy populations?” Steve Hilton is the Conservative Party consultant and godfather to David Cameron’s first child, his business consultancy “Good Business” has clients such as McDonald's and Coca-Cola.Zac Goldsmith: "Coke represents the cutting-edge of a global monoculture that is undermining real human diversity," Cameron said Ronald Reagan had had the right idea when he made the joke "If it moves, tax it. If it still moves, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidise it." (There were a lot of backroom deals going on in those days, lax enforcement and greatly reduced fines).
