From the mind of CLIVE SINCLAIR and his technical wizards, the NEWBRAIN was born. Passed around and continually passed over, only GRUNDY could finally secure the long overdue release of this unique machine. Join THE BRENT and Amigo Aaron as we attempt to figure out what exactly went down back in the late 70's, and what was ultimately produced. Steve Furber is a seminal computer scientist, mathematician and hardware designer whose work includes the BBC Microcomputer and the ARM 32-bit RISC microprocessor which can be found in over 100 billion devices today.Steve studied both Maths followed by a PhD in Aerodynamics at Cambridge University before joining Herman Hauser and Chris Curry at Acorn Computers. For the next decade, he would work with a first-class team of engineers and designers to revolutionise the home computer market before he and Sophie Wilson went on to design the ARM processor with a relatively small team and budget and with little inkling of the consequence it might bring to the world. In 1990, Steve left Acorn moved to Manchester where he is now Professor of Computer Engineering at the university there. He was charged with leading research into asynchronous systems, low-power electronics and neural engineering which led to the SpiNNaker project - a super computer incorporating a million ARM processors which are optimised for computational neuroscience. He is basically trying to reverse engineer the brain – a lofty ambition even by his own admission. In this wide-ranging conversation, we discuss Steve's life journey from studying maths with professors such as the famed John Conway and Sir James Lighthill to the highs and lows of building the BBC Micro and the story behind the ARM 32-bit RISC microprocessor.I thoroughly enjoyed talking to Steve and am overly excited about his SpiNNaker project which we also discuss today.Enjoy!--------------Steve Furber info / SpiNNaker info / Micro Men filmDanielle on Twitter @daniellenewnham and Instagram @daniellenewnham / Newsletter

The Venice Ghetto was founded in 1516 by the Venetian government as a segregated area of the city in which Jews were compelled to live. The world's first ghetto and the origin of the English word, the term simultaneously works to mark specific places and their histories, and as a global symbol that evokes themes of identity, exile, marginalization, and segregation. To capture these multiple meanings, the editors of this volume conceptualize the ghetto as a "memory space that travels" through both time and space. This interdisciplinary collection engages with questions about the history, conditions, and lived experience of the Venice Ghetto, including its legacy as a compulsory, segregated, and enclosed space. Contributors also consider the ghetto's influence on the figure of the Renaissance moneylender, the material culture of the ghetto archive, the urban form of North Africa's mellah and hara, and the ghetto's impact on the writings of Primo Levi and Marjorie Agosín. In addition to the volume editors, The Venice Ghetto: A Memory Space That Travels (U Massachusetts Press, 2022) features a foreword from James E. Young and contributions from Shaul Bassi, Murray Baumgarten, Margaux Fitoussi, Dario Miccoli, Andrea Yaakov Lattes, Federica Ruspio, Michael Shapiro, Clive Sinclair, and Emanuela Trevisan Semi.

In this bite-sized shorter-than-usual episode Owen Kelly offers two surprises and a look back at Clive Sinclair and the impact of the ZX Spectrum, which ushered in a brief period of democratic bedroom coding. For a short period the ZX Spectrum, and its rivals the Commodore 64 and the BBC Micro, created an ecosystem of bedroom hobbyists-turned entrepreneurs, cassette-based games, and monthly magazines that advertised and reviewed them. The coders formed the primary audience for each other's work and offered living examples of what Alvin Toffler referred to as prosumers. This opened up a range of possibilities that slowly closed again as one-person companies merged until eventually more powerful computers and the emergence of giant companies like Electronic Arts turned the computer games ecology into a “proper” market in which highly paid teams of coders made proprietary games for audiences entirely different from themselves.

Border patrol staves off refugees at the Texas #border on horseback and the liberal media loses their minds. Biden increases #refugee cap to 125,000. Afghanistan refugees have been indicted on assault and sex crimes. COVID Vaccine is alleged to have caused at least 200,000 irregular menstrual cycles. And finally, I pay my respects to Sir Clive Sinclair – inventor of ZX Spectrum and pocket calculator – who recently passed away.
Share Radio's technology editor Steve Caplin pays tribute to the inventiveness of the late Sir Clive Sinclair, inventor of the pocket calculator among other things - even though he always used a slide rule. He gives a Tesla a test drive, including its built-in whoopee cushion, admires a new microcar, looks forward to streets lit by glow-in-the-dark plants, explains why the Lithuanian government is warning people about Xiaomi phones, recommends an auto cutout app and highlights the latest IgNobel Prizes, one of which says sex is better for clearing the nose than decongestant.
Last week, influential British inventor and entrepreneur Clive Sinclair passed away. Sinclair invented some of the first slim calculators, handheld televisions, and digital watches, but he is perhaps best known for being one of the pioneers of the British personal computer industry. In the early 1980s his company, Sinclair Research, developed the hot-selling and widely cloned ZX80, ZX81, and ZX Spectrum computers. In this episode we talk about Clive Sinclair's life and the legacy of the ZX line of personal computers. Podívali jsme se do útrob legendárního gumáka (v čtvrté portugalské revizi s 48 kb paměti), zahráli si několik her a povídání o osobě Cliva Sinclaira doprovodili dobovými záběry. Clive Sinclair had nothing to prove by the time he was set to release the Sinclair C5. He had produced the worlds first pocket calculator, and the first personal computer that could be bought for under £100. Now he was bringing his genius to bear on the automotive world. This is the story of how that went wrong.

In the 1980s, 'micro computers' invaded the home. In this episode, Hannah Fry discovers how the computer was transported from the office and the classroom right into our living room. From eccentric electronics genius Clive Sinclair and his ZX80, to smart-suited businessman Alan Sugar and the Amstrad PC, she charts the 80s computer boom - a time when the UK had more computers per head of population than anywhere else in the world. Britain, 1979. To most people in the 70's, computers were monstrous, bleeping big-brother machines the size of a bus with hundreds of valves and great reels of magnetic tape. They were expensive to run and difficult to understand, and certainly, not something any of us would want at home. Clive Sinclair, a serial inventor, thought differently. He saw that the next step in modern computing was to create a small, affordable machine that could be used alongside our existing televisions and cassette players at home. His idea was to give the general public a tool to learn, organise and play on, that they could programme themselves. So, in 1979, he gave us the ZX80 - a home computer with a 1KB memory, no sound and a monochrome display. It may seem strange to us now, but that temperamental (and sometimes glitchy) little beauty launched the home computer industry that surrounds us today.
