New Game Old Flame - A modern and homebrew retro gaming podcast.
Today Andy and Diego spotlight Steel Legion for the NES from François Brodeur and published by Broke Studio. Join us as we navigate a dystopian 2004 filled with oppressive AI, run-and-gun exploration, and echoes of classic hits like Bionic Commando. We also head to the ZX Spectrum with The Blond, a uniquely challenging puzzle-action game inspired by the classic Western movie The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, guiding Tuco safely through each frantic level by strategically shooting targets to keep him alive. We also share exciting news about Atari's upcoming Jeff Minter-themed game jam and debate the mysterious boundaries of what truly counts as a sandwich. And yes, we promise to get to the bottom of whether a hot dog qualifies! Dust off your Commodore 64, power up that NES, and listen in!
Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dan's pick for the Alphabet Soup-er Series was Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, a game that Kris has surprisingly never played. How does it hold up? Is the game as good as its soundtrack? How many dumb skateboarding terms can Kris conjure to make it sound like he know what he's talking about? Let's find out! Then, in Week Old News, Sony hit us with a rather impressive State of Play, including fresh looks at Monster Hunter, that new Shinobi game, and more. Plus, Jeff Minter reimagines yet another Atari arcade classic, the creator of Dadish is back with an emotionally unstable cactus, PSN's outage raises preservation questions, and more. Finally, Dan still hasn' tbeen able to play much since his hands aren't working all that well, and Kris got hit with a snow day, so his playtime was truncated as well. But he did get to see the new Captain America movie, which was pretty rad. Enjoy! What's New at Stone Age Gamer Win a Mega EverDrive Pro! Sony dropped a surprise State of Play announcement event on us this week, and we take some time to recap everything discussed. We also spend some time on Xbox, and recent comments by Phil Spencer that appears to be shifting away from live service games. Is the bubble finally bursting on this trend in gaming? Or do some companies feel they need to stick with this at all costs? We discuss this and much more in gaming news on another week of the longest running video game podcast, Orange Lounge Radio! In the earliest days of the gaming biz, Human Engineered Software was a trailblazer, bringing big names like Jeff Minter to the US. The company's founder, Jay Balakrishnan, is a serial entrepreneur who not only would help create the mass market for software at retail but would also have a long and storied career in games beyond Hes ware with such companies as Radical Entertainment and Dynamics. I spoke to Jay in November and December of 2023, and after a few technical hiccups we finally got a connection going and we jump right into that today, so don't worry that I don't start things off with my traditional chronology obsessed focus, we'll wrap around and cover the whole story as we go along. It's The State of Gaming Podcast, Popzara's in-depth look at what's shaking up the gaming landscape delivered on a monthly basis. Listen as hosts Cory Galliher and Nate Evans guide you through the best, worst, and everything else making headlines and headway in the world of interactive entertainment. The Biggest Games of April 2024 The biggest games of the month include: Stellar Blade, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, SaGa: Emerald Beyond, Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- Sweep the Board!, Tales of Kenzera: Zau, Sand Land, Megaton Musashi W: Wired, and Phantom Fury. Other notables include: Braid: Anniversary Edition, TMNT Arcade: Wrath of the Mutants, Harold Halibut, Biomorph, BioGun, Children of the Sun, Sea of Thieves (PS5), and Grounded (PS, Switch). Circana: Thinking Ahead While Circana (formerly NPD) remains the gaming industry's best snapshot of what's moving and shaking up both physical and digital retail shelves across the country, it's time for us to move on. Going forward, The State of Gaming will no longer report on Circana's monthly sales estimates – unless there are specific newsworthy (i.e. sales related) items from them. Everything Else But there's more! Apple will officially allow retro game emulators on the App Store! The Atari 400 Mini is coming (surely, Jeff Minter is excited)! Will there be a PlayStation 5 Pro? Do we even need one? The Fallout TV series is almost here! No DLC for Baldur's Gate 3, says its developers. Is Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire the best videogame movie that's not based on a videogame? Also stayed tuned for Cory's semi-regular update on the latest and greatest controllers from around the world (but mostly China, honestly). Selections this month include the Mobapad's M6 HD Joycons (Switch), PDP's Victrix Pro BFG Wireless Controller (for PS/Xbox), FLYDIGI's APEX 4 Wireless Controller (PC, Switch, iOS/Android), as well as his mini-review of Sony's PlayStation Portal.
Sorry about this episode being late, but this is a really special episode for a very special game. I hope you appreciate the discussion and I want to say earnestly that I really think you should play this game and experience this story. We didn't know a lot about this Jeff Minter fella and I now consider him an inspirational figure. So enjoy the discussion but also just play this game. It's really great! In celebration of Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story being released, Drisky and Kingy go through some of the best Jeff Minter and Llamasoft's best games. There is a real voyage of discovery here, so join us as we play through these classic games. The games we have picked out from this amazing collection are: Deflex V Metagalactic Llamas Battle at the Edge of Time Hover Bovver Laser Zone Attack of the Mutant Camels Revenge of the Mutant Camels Gridrunner Rox 64 Sheep in Space Attack of the Mutant Camels '89 Llamatron: 2112 Tempest 2000 Gridrunner Remastered
Your familiarity with the name Jeff Minter will say a lot about when - and where - you were born, or spent much of your game-playing days in the 1980s. To most Americans (and much of the world), Jeff is probably best known for creating Tempest 2000 on the Atari Jaguar (arguably the best game on a failed platform) or Neon, the stock music virtualizer on the Xbox 360.
We revisit the emulator settlement from last week with some clarifications from someone who is more knowledgeable in the inner workings of that scene than we are. Some emulator developers have gotten spooked enough to take their emulators offline, others have more resolve with more safeguards. Digital Eclipse's second entry in the Gold Master Series is out - Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story. It shows that Jeff is a master of the VIC20, but ends abruptly in 1994 - even though Jeff's story is still being told. The Museum of Play has announced the 2024 World Video Game Hall of Fame finalists - who would you vote for? Then we talk to OLR about Llamasoft games that we might have played as kids, and who we would pick for the World Video Game Hall of Fame.

It's Jeff time! Jeffrey Combs has played roles in several different Trek shows, so when I first started putting together theme lists, a Jeffrey Combs Appreciation Episode was on the docket. Here we have him as a mad robot, an angry Andorian and a pair of cloned zealots of varying levels of faith. 00:00 Opening 14:48 Lower Decks: Where Pleasant Fountains Lie 36.40 Enterprise: The Andorian Incident 57:51 Deep Space Nine: Treachery, Faith and The Great River Talking points include: favourite Jeffs, ranking of Jeff names, Jeff Minter, Babylon 5, Justice League Unlimited, HP Hatecraft and Harlan Ellison, System Mastery, Questionable Content, The Three Jokers (ugh), The Young Ones, #iHunt, How Did This Get Made, Charlie's personal role model Skeletor, Portal, Evil Computers in Mass Effect, Roxann Dawson director of “The Long Con” for Lost, Charlie describing a dalek but failing to describe an Andorian, X-Men (the 2000's movie), GoldenEye & Half-Life levels, “what if The Empire was the good guys” people, Miles being a 1990's nerd hipster, X-Files, Catch-22, The Del Boy Trotter of Space, Alan Rickman in Galaxy Quest, The Dead Zone TV show with Anthony Michael Hall from The Breakfast Club in it, Deepwater Black, Australian science fiction shows (not Deepwater Black), the Australian Ultraman show, alternative social media and becoming a fan of something obscure enough it can't generate flamewars. Oh, and occasionally Star Trek. Miles mentioned about acts of arson in the Moulsescoomb council estate. While I never new anyone who did that, my brother was friends with a kid who set light to a newsagents in Whitehawk. A clarification: Ed Sheeran was alive in 2001, he'd only have been ten years old The rankings: Jeff Jef Jeph Geoff Casual Trek is by Charlie Etheridge-Nunn and Miles Reid-Lobatto Music by Alfred Etheridge-Nunn Casual Trek is a part of the Nerd & Tie Network If you want to support what we're doing and suggest an episode or theme for us to cover, head on over to: https://ko-fi.com/casualtrek Miles has a blog! http://www.mareidlobatto.wordpress.com

My guest today is Steve McNeil, one of the creators and team captains of Go 8 Bit, a videogame comedy show that started life as a fringe experiment and has now been turned into a real life TV show! It starts tonight in the UK at 10pm on Dave. We talk through Steve's life in games, from Pong on the Adnan Grandstand through to the very latest in virtual reality. We touch on his love for the early British videogame pioneers like Jeff Minter and the Oliver Twins, university sessions of Brian Lara Cricket, his deep love of Split/Second Velocity and the potentially friend-ending joy of Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes. We also touch on Steve's comedy career, how he got his start as a plant in a Brendon Burns fringe show, the origins of Go 8 Bit and the challenge of adapting it for TV, the crazy tech of Wifi Wars and how much Bob Mortimer loves first person shooters. 'Drink the brine!' iTunes HERE - SUBSCRIBE / RATE / REVIEW Games discussed: Pong, Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, Chuckie Egg, Dizzy, Split/Second, GTA 4, Brian Lara Cricket, Ico, Assassin's Creed 2, Track and Field, Gang Beats, South Park and the Stick of Truth RSS HERE Twitter - twitter.com/CheckpointsShow Cover design: Craig Stevenson - http://onedinosaurandhisballoon.blogspot.co.uk Music: Samuel Baker - http://soundcloud.com/furoshiki

The pureness of arcade games are a constant draw for many to the point where many shirk modern games in favour of the old classics from the 1970s and 80s. Show host Chris ORegan happened upon Rogue Aces while at Rezzed 2018 and he was really impressed with what he saw as it was a game that is both arcade shooter with a realistic flight model. Topics covered include Jeff Minter games, Wipeout Omega Collection and RAF banter. In this episode of The Sausage Factory, show host Chris ORegan talks to Mike Daws of Infinite State Games about the creation of Rogue Aces. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/sausage/TSF_Episode184.mp3

Jay Balakrishnan, HESWare Welcome to an interview-only episode of ANTIC The Atari 8-bit Computer Podcast. My name is Randy Kindig. Jay Balakrishnan bought his first Commodore PET in 1978, which spurred him to found Human Engineered Software (HES or HESWare) in 1980. HESWare got its start on the Commodore PET but later moved into many other platforms. They developed or sold software for C64, Vic-20, Atari 8-bit, Apple II, Atari ST, Amiga, ZX Spectrum, Dragon, TI-99, DOS and others. Many Llamasoft games, through an alliance with Jeff Minter, were published in the US by HESWare. For the Atari 8-bit, they published games like Pastfinder, River Raid, Decathlon, Space Shuttle, Attack of the Mutant Camels, Gridrunner. By early 1984 InfoWorld estimated that HES was tied with Broderbund as the world's tenth-largest microcomputer-software company and largest entertainment-software company. In early 1984 they made their biggest splash when they acquired the services of Leonard Nimoy as spokesman. This interview took place on November 20, 2016. We are back with another episode of DeREZD talking all about the PSVR. This week Will and I give our thoughts on Jeff Minter’s Polybius. What a trip. The stills and gameplay videos definitely don’t do this game justice! We then cover the week’s news […]
The tape is rewound, the counter set to zero, and that means only one thing: it’s time to Press Play on Tape! This month, Alex, Daz and Aaron are joined by Serby from Weird and Retro to take a look back at Atari’s 8-bit computer range. Alex runs us through Atari’s lineup, spanning from the Atari 400 to the ST-inspired 130XE, before handing over the Serby to discuss his beloved XE Games System! After picking Llamasoft as Publisher of Choice for this month, the crew discuss the many weird and wonderful games they’ve given us over the years. The group also discovers that Jeff Minter’s games were responsible for them getting the Atari Jaguar, Nuon and the PS Vita! On a more subdued note, it’s with great sadness that this episode sees us saying goodbye to Alex and Darren from the show. Both have made the difficult decision to step down from regular hosting duties in order to focus on other projects. The show will go on, but they both will be missed. Thanks for listening, and we hope you enjoy this month’s episode! This episode along with all previous ones can be found at http://pressplayontape.podbean.com. You can also find us on iTunes by searching for Press Play on Tape Podcast – we’d love it if you gave us a review while you’re there. It all helps! You can also find us on Facebook by searching for Press Play on Tape podcast, and on Twitter @PPOT_Podcast As always, thanks to http://www.ausretrogamer.com and http://www.retrodomination.com for their ongoing support!
I'm joined this week by Zack, Matt, Mike and Ashley, and if they can SHUT UP long enough for me to get on with the show, we'll discuss Jeff Minter's early obsession with drug-fueled quadrapeds, the barren wasteland that was Xbox Live Indie Games, the... classic? Spy vs. Spy franchise, the power of bigoted jokes to completely destroy an otherwise entertaining product, and one of the most influential and divisive games of the last decade. YOUR GAMES THIS WEEK ARE: Advance of the Megacamel AKA Attack of the Mutant Camels, for Atari 8-bit and PC; Who Did I Date Last Night?, for Xbox 360; Spy Vs. Spy 3: Arctic Antics, for PC and Atari 8-bit; Z.H.P. Unlosing Ranger VS Darkdeath Evilman, for PSP; and Dark Souls, for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. You can find the up-to-date ranked list at bit.ly/letsplace. Follow @SSJSpeedRacer on Twitter for show announcements and you might be a guest on the next show!
OK, so the one week break turned into a two week break, but you can trust that One Life Left will never let you down again. Except for Marioke in July which we've had to cancel. And we'll be going on our summer holidays before too long. It's also pretty hot. Now, Team OLL are used to being hot, but this is an altogether different kind of hot. It's the type of hot that makes you have a can of Malibu and pineapple at the cricket and tricks you into thinking that your leggings will dry in time to go out. It's also the kind of hot where you reckon that hot and heat are words that are interchangeable. This week's show is rather cultured as our Super-Special Guests were Darren Wall from Read Only Memory and Alex Wiltshire from The Streets. They were in to promote ROM's first self-funded book Britsoft: An Oral History, which involved speaking to the major players in the British coding scene such as Jon Hare, Mel Croucher and Peter Moulinex. We also found out how you get Nintendo to give you two million dollars, tried to work out who is this generation's Jeff Minter and Ste thought about Jez San. GameUnder made a welcome return (along with a new microphone) and Sega Badawi told us about the latest local news (from two weeks ago). And we also promoted a certain special someone's new book about computer games, we really can't recommend it highly enough and we're certain that you'll enjoy their work so much. They really deserve every success with it. Cheerio!
We start the show with the announcement that Mike Barton from GameOverCast has joined the SHFTS roster of show hosts. He chats about his time with the demo of Kingdom of Amalur and he found it to be somewhat wanting, much like Tony and Chris who also had issues with it. Tara is too busy stabbing people in the back during PvP matches on Star Wars the Old Republic to care though. In the news we cover Alienware releasing a small form factor PC that is the size of an Xbox 360 only 6 times more expensive. We also discuss THQ denying that it is in trouble, Amy developer defending its game, Ubisoft having ridiculous DRM for Anno 2070 and the Xperia Play not selling so well in the face of stiff competition from Samsung and HTC. It's a well-known fact: If you don't like that game you don't like, it's not the game. It's you. You're what's wrong with country. The zombies. The plague. Autism. The one percent... and you. Because surely, it is not the game. The game is great. You just can't understand it or handle it. Just ask Jeff Minter. That's the syndrome we tackle this week in the GameHounds podcast. Which game is it? Well, you're just going to have to find out for yourself. When we're not "being haters," GameEdie Sellers, Nick Dinicola, and Holy Goalie also cover the news, including: First round of DLC drops for Gears of War 3. Heavy Rain's director's cut is really not a director's cut. An Alan Wake sequel is on its way. Grand Theft Auto 5 teaser is out in the wild. Resident Evil for Nintendo 3DS will be $50 without the add-on peripheral. And if you don't like this podcast, you suck. Enjoy.
Alphabox starts off the show with his experiences on the new Call of Duty Black Ops zombie map and marvels at its complexity and size. Next Kropotkin talks about Jeff Minter games on the iOS platform, much to the bemusement of the rest of the hosts, Hendrix tells us about his time with Dungeons of Dredmore and BloodShot Robot continues to plough his way through The Witcher 2. Talk about a game that keeps on giving! We sign off with news on Dust 514, Silicon Knights, World of Warcraft and new PS3 models.Running time: 01:12:37

There is a legend that states that should One Life Left ever produce a radio show that is less professional than the last then the house of Scantlebury will fall. It’s half eleven on Tuesday night, just after Episode 3 of Season 3 and as far as we know she’s fine – she’d text if she wasn’t, wouldn’t she? – so let’s assume we’ve continued our slow tramp up the quality mountain and made some definite improvements. In order: 1) A new ‘Corrections and Clarifications’ section designed for us to make amends to you, the listener, for all our lies and half-truths. Please use responsibly. 2) Live gossip from the videogame BAFTAS, text-messaged in from an insider spy 3) Another astonishing secret expert guest who comes with his own theme tune. In all caps: who PLAYS HIS OWN THEME TUNE LIVE. 4) A competition! An actual competition! To win exclusive Ann memorabilia! 5) Intermittent (and unnecessary) barracking of both Jeff Minter and The Hoosiers 6) A curiously-enraged Derek Williams 7) The podcast appearing a record 116 minutes after broadcast. Plus all the usual stuff: music, letters, inside jokes and highly regarded (or at least regarded) features. Thanks to Kotaku and The Guardian for the coverage this week. If you have any more places you think OLL should be, please do us the grandest of favours and let them know (and then let us know that they know). It’s always lovely to hear from you about anything else, too. You should know the email address by now. What else? This Thursday is OLL’s very special* appearance at Nottingham Gamecity. We have no idea what that’s going to be like but please, come and say hi and enjoy a drink with us afterwards. Friday is the OLL affiliated curry-evening and Saturday is Ste’s talk about his Mum. Sunday we’re doing Handheld of a sort at the London Games Fringe thing at 333; more info on that in the show you’re no doubt already subscribed to. Subscribers may get a secret gift later in the week. We’re not sure yet. We’ll be adding pictures to our Facebook group later this week (Ann’s in charge) so if you haven’t joined that maybe you should. Our MySpace friends page is a good place to find all that music that Simon hates so much. And the One Life Left Forum has lots of people talking about videogame pants and much more besides. See you there.
