It Gets Late Early: Career Tips for Tech Employees in Midlife and Beyond
With mass layoffs hitting tech, media, and corporate America, more professionals over 40 are being forced into freelance work, consulting, and solopreneur life—whether they planned for it or not. And here's a big problem with that: the moment you leave corporate, you lose access to affordable health insurance. Suddenly, you're staring down $4,000/month premiums, sky-high deductibles, and hospital bills that make you wonder what you're even paying for.In today's episode, I sit down with Crystal Jackson—also known as The Real Mrs. Poindexter—a former Intel engineer turned viral content creator with millions of followers. After 13 years in corporate, Crystal left to raise her kids, went back to work for the benefits, left again, and eventually found herself paying $48,000 a year for health insurance that barely covered anything. When she got sick and ended up with another $10,000 in medical bills, she'd had enough. So she did what any fed-up engineer would do: she co-founded EssentL Creator with her husband Chris to solve the problem no one else would touch—affordable, corporate-level health insurance for freelancers, gig workers, and solopreneurs. In this episode, we talk about:Why Crystal was paying $48K/year for health insurance and still owed $10K in hospital billsHow the "future of work" is creating a wave of involuntary entrepreneurs (and what that means for you)What a PEO (Professional Employer Organization) actually is—and how it gives solopreneurs access to corporate-level benefitsWhy leaving corporate might be the scariest—and best—thing that ever happens to youHow to protect yourself legally and financially when you go out on your own (LLCs, IP protection, contract red-lining)The mental health crisis among content creators—and why EssentL offers enhanced mental health and addiction coverageIf you've been laid off, are thinking about going solo, or are tired of paying insane premiums for garbage coverage, this episode is for you. Ed Butowsky and Craig Warnimont break down UPS (UPS) earnings. The company said it would cut 48K jobs in management and operations and it's setting up for its best holiday season. Craig thinks investors will “wait and see” on UPS shares until it starts showing growth again. “If they can't trust that the P/E isn't shrinking,” they won't see a good entry point, he explains. Ed, on the other hand, says if you believe in the U.S., you have to believe in UPS because it is at the “forefront” of shipping.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.

The other day I read a tweet complaining that since 1971 household family income had increased 5.5X (from $10K to $55K) while the median cost of a new car has gone up by 12X ($4K to $48K). It's not quite correct. Median family income has risen to $101K, so has almost kept up. But it […]

Join Simon Elisha and Dr. Werner Vogels, as they kick off a new mini-series, "The Frugal Architect," with Dan Conti, whose journey from the constrained world of embedded systems to WeTransfer's cloud architecture is a masterclass in frugal innovation. In his early career, Dan wrestled with MP3 players where 48K of RAM was a luxury. This experience cultivated a deep appreciation for efficiency that would prove crucial at WeTransfer. As CTO, Dan applied this resourceful mindset to cloud computing, where easy scaling often masked hidden waste. His team's efforts to optimize storage, improve observability, and align technology with environmental values showcased that in the cloud, frugality isn't about penny-pinching—it's about squeezing every ounce of value from your architecture -- and doing it sustainably. This episode is packed with birthday embarrassment, a big dill taste drive, and more listener icks. → If you're a Mitsubishi girlie, head over to Apple Podcasts, leave a five star review for the show, shout out your ride, and tell us what you love about listening to The Carpool! To kick things off, today's millennial word of the day is ‘rat girl summer.' If you're into lurking, snacking, and embracing your rodent energy — this is for you. Kelly will take her hot girl spray tan and iced coffee over rat girl summer any day. Kelly's 30th birthday pool party made the Margaritas go down a little too smooth and caused the gals a bit of hangxiety. On the bright side, Lizz's ice shot glasses and the Alpaca Picnic were both a hit. In her driveway dump, Kelly also shares her take on slicked back hairstyles, toxic messy bun tutorials and the overuse of ‘AI.' Hidden Valley Ranch with pickle flavored ranch and Spritz Society's canned cocktail collab with Clausen are featured in today's taste drive. Kelly and Lizz both agree, Seltzer taste tests need to make a comeback on the Carpool. Listener icks this week include adults using the ‘little girls room', sleeping with your childhood blankie, and grown men with towels around their waist. Kelly and Lizz add their most embarrassing moments to the mix. If you sign up for more free trials than Kelly, you need Rocket Money. The Mitsubishi Mirage is the last new car with an average purchase price below $20K. And In July, Americans paid, on average, $48K for a new vehicle. Sardines are it and listener Genevieve is here to confirm. She's sending Lizz and Kelly over to Trader Joes to get the best of the best — packed in olive oil, skinless, and boneless. Genevieve shares her tips and tricks to eating them right on toast or broiled with cheese to make a sardine melt. Toast has 48K+ restaurant clients as of the fall of 2021 when they filed for their IPO. This is a huge number, but only represents about 5% of the total restaurant segment. In this week's edition of the Merchant Sales Insight, I worked with one of my favorite, truly processor agnostic POS systems, Quantic to provide a road map of what you need to offer in order to compete with Toast and win in the restaurant space.
On this Friday edition of WUL, I talk with Austin Dowell. Austin is a full time pharmacist who's building his digital marketing business in his spare time. He's been able to grow his TIktok following to over 48K people in just 90 days
Getting out of debt made me a pretty shit person for 19 months. Deciding to get out of debt for the long term was a great thing for us, during the entire process however I was a garbage excuse for a person. It consumed my entire life. I made getting debt free my personality. Deciding to get out of debt when we did, ruined my wedding. It made me so miserable every single day. It created so much bitterness inside my heart. It left me with brand new wounds that have taken another couple of years to heal. If you are at the beginning or middle of your debt-free journey or if even thinking about it scares the crap out of you, I get it. I am essentially a cautionary tale of all the things NOT TO DO. Live your life. Don't pick one month sooner of debt freedom over being there for the people in your life. Don't eat garbage food you hate just because you are trying to save an extra $6 on your grocery bill. Don't stew in resentment and bitterness about the things you are sacrificing when people around you aren't sacrificing the way you think they should. Don't be debt-free journey, Cassie. Learn from my mistakes. Cassie Moore: Host of the The Get More Podcast, money coach, virtual assistant and card carrying cat lady forever.
