In this episode, we talk with Ian Ellis, Technology Strategist, Angel Investor, Venture Partner and Founder of the London Enterprise Tech Meetup. Ian Ellis is an experienced Technology Strategist who has driven C-level stakeholder engagement across some of world's leading organisations, including Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank, Prudential Financial, Microsoft and Bank of Ireland. His work involves aligning the high-level objectives for an organisation with its technology and business strategies, particularly related to how it drives practical innovation and also engagement with the external ecosystem of emerging technologies, investors and incumbent tech players.Ian covers a lot of topics including generative AI and its potential applications, reporting requirements around ESG, and the need for thoughtful regulation, responsible innovation, and sustainable practices in the financial services industry.3 Takeaways:Well placed regulations can help drive innovationVirtual advancements are having physical, global impactsFinOps is on the riseKey Quotes: “One of the things that people never think about is the importance of regulation. I think if you look at financial services and regulation in Europe, I think the European Union has been a very enabling force within the financial services ecosystem, with things like SEPA, PSD2, and all these types of regulations that drive, [or] actually force innovation a little bit. I think about regulation as a breathing thing, or a human thing is the wrong thing to way to describe it. But if you look across regions and how they regulate that has an impact on the innovation ecosystems in those regions.”“Actually, what the FinTech lab helped people realize is that the financial services industry and the ecosystem is, it's not a zero-sum game. There are winners and losers on all sides. So, if you disrupt a retail bank in say, you know, foreign currency, you're probably actually making money for an investment bank or a broker dealer on the other side. So, banks win somewhere else if they don't win on the front line in retail, they're winning in the backend and syndicating something.”“Because the thing with financial products [is] often [that] they're reasonably similar with nuances and differences on the edge, and sometimes those differences are important, sometimes they're not. So, working out how to think about that type of stuff in a way that makes sense. I think some of the challenges around AI and loading large volumes of data in is the time to market stuff. So that you need to think about the data being current. Nobody made money in a market looking at yesterday's data or the day before that.”“So, it's like everything ties back to physical somewhere. And the costs of some of these technologies are things that people don't think about enough in terms of sustainability.”Ian EllisTechnology Strategist, Angel Investor and Founder of the London Enterprise Tech MeetupBio:Ian Ellis is an experienced technology strategist who has driven C-level stakeholder engagement across some of world's leading organisations, including Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank, Prudential Financial, Microsoft and Bank of Ireland. It's another week, which means an all-new episode of the Future Construct Podcast! This week, on Season 3, Episode 7, our host Amy Peck (@AmyPeckXR) was joined by John Rygg, the Technology Strategist and R&D HoloLens Product Owner for the Kiewit Innovation Team (27-minute interview). A lot of insightful topics were discussed during the session, as Amy and John delved into exchanges about augmented reality, wearable technology, and integration into the construction industry. About John RyggWith more than 20 years of experience managing and leading corporate IT teams in developing and implementing enterprise-wide software and infrastructure, John has been recognized as #10 on the 2017 Buildworlds Top 50 Technology Adoption Leaders. For much of his career, he has served in facilitating the technology strategic planning process to determine how IT can best benefit business outcomes. This also includes helping to capture innovation, thinking through corporate strategy, and putting technology to work to achieve it. In innovative and disruptive technologies, John has focused on identifying and driving incremental and disruptive innovation opportunities for field technologies resulting in operational excellence.During the interview, John discussed numerous topics with host Amy Peck (@AmyPeckXR), including:Having IT heavily involved in the front-line innovation at KiewitWhat difficulties pose obstacles to integrating wearable technology into the construction environmentAn explanation of the difference between pass-through video and true augmented reality and the impact each will have on the future of the industryJason's opinion on the delineation between AR and VR and the deployments of both headsets for different utilities Kiewit is one of North America's largest and most respected construction and engineering organizations. Their construction and design engineering professionals work on some of the industry's most complex, challenging, and rewarding projects – whether it's boring tunnels through mountains, turning rivers into energy, or building bridges that connect communities. Kiewit people tackle important projects of every size in any market.SHOW NOTES 4:14 - Amy: "It's also a little bit unusual to have IT so heavily involved in that front-line innovation, so is that your impetus in saying, 'Hey, we need to look at this,' or was that already happening at the company?" 10:09 - Amy: "That [the construction environment] has always been one of the challenges because as great as those devices [wearable tech like HoloLens] are, they're not as rugged as we'd like them to be, and oftentimes you'd have to wear hard hats and rigs that work with hard hats. Do you find that it's the challenging environment or promoting adoption that is the difficulty?" 13:39 - Amy: "Can you explain the difference between pass-through video and true augmented reality, and what impact do you think these devices will have on the future of the industry?" 19:36 - Amy: "I guess this is a question for you, too, in terms of AR and VR. I don't look at augmented reality and virtual reality as competing technologies ... Where do you see that delineation, and do you see deploying both kinds of headsets for different utilities?"Contact the Future Construct Podcast Produced by BIM Designs, Inc! Nima's core values are to operate with integrity, with himself and the outside world, to understand how people work best, and to create beauty. His doctoral research was on human capital after earlier degrees in engineering and economics.Coming from an immigrant family – his parents moved to the U.S. from Iran during the Iranian revolution - he struggles with a view of the immigrant mentality He believes it needs to evolve from the servant mentality that many immigrants seem to hold as hard workers. That can be a trap and they can undersell themselves. He tries to change that with the fashion business Dress Abstract which hires only immigrants in the U.S. who come from cultures worldwide.Related to this is his belief that empathy can get “hijacked” because it can lead to foregoing the opportunity to grow, to blaze your own path. His inability to forget anything is a result of what has now been recognized as a mental illness diagnosed in only 50 people so far, Hypothymeism. While a good memory is an asset, storing absolutely everything in one's mind is definitely a challenge to navigate constantly. Nima is part of a study at the University of California-Irvine. (Listen for more on this.) Time has no meaning for him, and it can sometimes accidentally offend people. For the first 5 years of the symptoms of the disease being triggered, he felt like no human understood and he was really challenged to communicate and reconcile the personal self with the professional self. It is expressed in his painting, for example, which is an explosion of layers of paint.Nima thinks the biggest transformation we are witnessing now is how mental illness is being regarded as an illness like physical illnesses, to be recognized as such and be spoken openly about and treated without shame.Clearly, Nima is on a significant work legacy journey to benefit people and organizations way beyond himself and to create beauty.TakeawaysMost people are multi-faceted. For many, the challenge is to find ways to get the pieces to work together and/or give them space.Know what “know thyself” means. Manage your feelings from empathy to compassion. The challenge is to get organizations to approach situations and individuals from a position of empathy.Society is built on trauma. We need to educate ourselves to deal with it. Quotes“Do what you have the biggest pain for, rather than calling it love or passion.”“Find comfort in being uncomfortable.”“Time has no meaning for me.”“In the business world, things are measured by ROI, but people can't grow from that.”“There are two types of capital in the world: financial and human capital.”“The problem with humans is that we are believing creatures, when the opposite is true.”BioNima Veiseh is an academic researcher, tech strategist, artist and fashion entrepreneur – plus best-selling author of Markets with Memory: The World's First Data Science Book on the Hemp and Cannabis Industry. Nima is one of 3 co-founders of the Temporal Abstraction school of art. Abstract of the talk… Continuous Delivery practices have evolved significantly with the cloud-native paradigm. GitOps & Chaos Engineering are at the forefront of this new CD approach, with an ever-increasing pattern involving Git-backed pipeline definitions that implement “chaos stages” in pre-prod environments to gauge service-level objective (SLO) compliance. In this talk, Juergen Etzlstorfer (maintainer of Keptn CNCF project) will discuss how you can construct pipelines that include chaos experimentation (using LitmusChaos) while simulating real-world load, and implement quality gates (based on SLOs) to ensure only resilient applications are deployed into production. He will also demonstrate how you can include chaos tests to your existing CD pipelines without the need of rewriting them. Bio… Jürgen is a Technology Strategist at Dynatrace and a maintainer of the Keptn open-source project. Within Keptn, he is working with the broader open-source tooling landscape on tools integrations and takes care about its growing community & ecosystem. He also loves to share his experience, most recently at conferences on Kubernetes based technologies, open-source and automation.
Mike, also referred to as "Moog", is a Technology Strategist that caters to the needs of the Honors College in tandem with centralized IT's efforts across OU's campus. He provides project management and business analysis that helps improve workflows in anything from daily routine based work to big initiatives for both the individual college as well as the university. Mike is a U.S. Army veteran, has worked for Apple, and is an active photographer of over 20 years of experience. Moog attributes much of his organizational and strategic abilities and successes to World of Warcraft. Managing a guild of over 150 people from all over the world converted him from an extremely introverted person into a very extroverted one. Through his 4 years managing this guild he also led raids during the initial WoW days through several expansions where 40 individuals were required to accomplish highly coordinated tasks through VoIP communication in real-time.Moog has been a gamer since the Atari days in the 80s and can enjoy all genres when the timing is right. Mike's biggest passion is helping out where he finds opportunities to do so because he wants to not because he needs to. He has embraced his role as Lead Advisor 500% and is leading the charge for gamers and esports athletes within the walls of OU only as a precursor to helping uplift these industries across the state and region. Mike started the research and development of the OU Esports Club in Fall 2016.

He is currently a Director and Technology Strategist for an IT services company based in the French Pacific providing vendor-agnostic digital advisory, professional services and training. Siddick is also a Chartered IT Professional, a long-standing Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT), a technology conference speaker and a mentor. He is also a former Microsoft TechIdol winner In this episode, Phil and Siddick Elaheebocus discuss how continuous self-development provides security and opens up exciting possibilities. In the podcast, Siddick goes over numerous ways you can do all of this efficiently. They discuss why having a purely technical skillset is no longer sufficient for IT professionals. As well as why failure is not a negative thing. KEY TAKEAWAYS: (6.37) TOP CAREER TIP Invest in yourself continually. Things change fast you never know when your role will change drastically or disappear, and you need to find a new one. Growing your knowledge, skills, and networking will ensure you are ready for the move. You also need to work on your soft skills and personality. (9.43) WORST CAREER MOMENT When Siddick took on his first management role he had to learn on the job. The firm he worked for did not provide any formal people management training. Unfortunately, he made a mistake. One that started to impact his professional image negatively. He could not fully fix the issue, so ended up leaving a job he loved. This experience prompted him to learn people skills. Something that Siddick found has helped his career immeasurably. (13.39) CAREER HIGHLIGHT Being involved in the launch of the first public cloud in Tahiti is Siddick´s biggest career highlight. There were a lot of challenges, but they succeeded and provided an affordable cloud service. Microsoft uses it as an example and other island nations are replicating it. (16.33) THE FUTURE OF CAREERS IN I.T Siddick is excited by the fact that we are on the edge of the next big tech revolution. The availability of cognitive and artificial intelligence, big data and augmented reality will all lead to huge changes. This is likely to transform the role of most IT professionals. They will still need their technical skills but will also play a far greater role in driving change through innovation. It is no longer sufficient to have only technical skills; you need an understanding of business too. (19.13) THE REVEAL What first attracted you to a career in I.T.?– When people started to ask Siddick to repair their hardware he became curious about how PC worked which started his IT career. What’s the best career advice you received?– Siddick´s dad told him - work isn´t life. What’s the worst career advice you received?– There´s no room for failure. Siddick believes no failure means you are not trying anything new. What would you do if you started your career now?– Siddick would start by working in the cloud, AI or cybersecurity fields. What are your current career objectives? – Building some specialized skills in data center and cloud tech and building a stronger tech community, in his area. What’s your number one non-technical skill?– Active listening. In the podcast, Siddick shares several examples of how that has helped his career. How do you keep your own career energized?– Learning from his customers and business partners and working to understand emerging technologies. What do you do away from technology? – He loves to travel and spending time enjoying the beautiful island he lives on. (26.00) FINAL CAREER TIP If you want to excel in your profession, become passionate about what you do. You will naturally become good at what you do and be inspired to carry on learning and contributing. BEST MOMENTS (6.37) – Siddick- “Invest in yourself continuously. Today, your role is important, tomorrow you might be redundant.” (17.13) – Siddick- “The shift in the technology landscape means IT professionals have to become innovation agents.” (19.17) – Siddick- “You need a combined knowledge of IT and business to be a real asset for companies.” (20.43) – Siddick- “When you have work-life harmony, you are happy. In time, this happiness translates into better productivity.” (23.33) – Siddick- “It's amazing how much you can learn simply by shutting your mouth and opening your ears.” (0.00) – Siddick- “If you want to excel at what you do, become passionate about your work to fuel your career.” ABOUT THE HOST – PHIL BURGESS Phil Burgess is an independent IT consultant who has spent the last 20 years helping organisations to design, develop and implement software solutions. Larry, a Pittsburgh native, graduated from Gannon University in 2004 and Carnegie Mellon in 2005. At Gannon, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Management Information Systems. During his sophomore year, Larry began exploring his entrepreneurial interests and started GioiaDesign.net, where he worked as an independent consultant advising Erie businesses as they established their presence on the Internet. While at CMU, Larry continued his passion for leadership and entrepreneurship. He was the recipient of the MISM Student Leadership Award and also helped launch COMPackage.com, the Alphabot mobile app, and advised numerous other technology start-up ventures. Upon graduation from CMU, Larry joined Diamond Management & Technology Consultants in 2005 as a technology consultant. Diamond was later acquired by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in 2011. At PwC, Larry serves as a Senior Director in PwC’s Health Industries Advisory technology consulting practice. As a digital architect and thinking partner, Larry has worked alongside healthcare executives and innovators across the healthcare ecosystem – predominately in big pharma.
