Our healthcare system treats us like it's one size fits all, yet that's not how true healing works, especially when it comes to chronic conditions. Today's guest will help us understand how to fill the gap we experience with Western medicine, including the difference between signs vs. symptoms, and empowers our individualized healthcare. On this episode of Salad with a Side of Fries, host Jenn Trepeck welcomes Functional Medicine Nutritionist and educator Andrea Nakayama to explore why chronic conditions require more than just a diagnosis and a prescription. They unpack Andrea's “three roots, many branches” model, revealing how digestion, inflammation, and genetics lie at the heart of chronic illness—and how nurturing the "soil" around them can lead to true healing. From nutrition habits to the importance of bio-individuality, this conversation empowers you to become an informed partner in your health care. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, who discusses wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE:(00:00) Intro: Our healthcare system is one size fits all(05:08) Andrea shares her motivation for her journey into functional nutrition, and a discussion of Western medicine(07:41) Should every person receive the same treatment for the same chronic condition(11:45) How to choose a guide in the health equation(16:40) Knowing the difference between your signs vs. symptoms(21:59) Andrea walks us through the “three roots and many branches” model(28:36) The roles digestion and inflammation play in our health(33:37) Tiers to nutrition mastery. Tier one is our non-negotiables(36:40) Don't neglect your passion and purpose(38:48) Andrea's non-negotiable trifecta: Sleep, poop, and blood sugarKEY TAKEAWAYS:Chronic health conditions must be understood through a systems-based lens, not just symptom management. Every chronic issue has three core roots—genes, digestion, and inflammation. Healing begins by nurturing these “roots” and the surrounding “soil,” rather than chasing individual symptoms alone. Western medicine excels in acute care but often falls short in managing chronic conditions. Patients are frequently seen through the lens of their diagnosis rather than as whole individuals, resulting in treatments that overlook their unique health histories and personal needs. One of the most powerful tools patients can use is specific, emotion-free communication based on personal health tracking. By clearly distinguishing between signs (measurable indicators like fever or rash) and symptoms (subjective experiences like fatigue or pain) and offering detailed timelines of when and how issues arise, patients empower providers to better understand and address their unique health needs.Supporting foundational health can start with three simple, non-negotiable nutrition habits: include fat, fiber, and protein at every meal or snack to help stabilize blood sugar; eat the rainbow to boost fiber and phytonutrient intake while feeding your microbiome; and know your yes-no-maybe list to understand better how specific foods impact your body. Tracking what makes you feel great, what doesn't, and what you're unsure about builds awareness and equips you to have more productive, personalized conversations with your healthcare provider.QUOTES: (07:41) “The first two gaps I encountered were that people are treated like their diagnosis. So, when you are in the medical system, you are your endometriosis, your fibroids, your breast cancer, your PMS. You are your symptom. The other gap was that everybody with the same symptom or diagnosis was treated the same.” - Andrea Nakayama(09:34) “A chronic condition means you're sick and you're not getting better. There's things going on for a long time, and our medical system isn't trained to address chronic conditions.” Andrea Nakayama(25:32) “The three roots of any chronic condition are always our genes, digestion and inflammation. All three need to be tended to for the branches to express themselves more fully.” - Andrea Nakayama(36:53) “We have an episode called the Longevity Equation, and one about Blue Zones and one of the big factors there that everybody seems to overlook is community and connection.” - Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramNutrition Nugget: Genes and EpigeneticsSalad With a Side of Fries: The Longevity EquationSalad With a Side of Fries: Blue Zones: A Blueprint for Physical and Mental HealthSalad With a Side of Fries: The Down and DirtyGUEST RESOURCES:Andrea Nakayama - WebsiteFunctional Nutrition Alliance - WebsiteAndrea Nakayama - InstagramFunctional Nutrition Alliance - YouTubeAndrea Nakayama - PinterestAndrea Nakayama, Functional Nutritionist & EducatorAndrea Nakayama - Functional Nutrition Alliance | LinkedInGUEST BIOGRAPHY:Andrea is a Functional Medicine Nutritionist and educator who has led thousands of clients and teaches even more coaches and clinicians worldwide. As the 15-Minute Matrix Podcast host and the founder and former CEO of Functional Nutrition Alliance, Andrea draws on systems biology, mental models, root-cause methodology, and therapeutic partnerships to offer long-awaited solutions for the rapidly growing chronic illness epidemic. After losing her young husband to a brain tumor in 2002, she discovered a passion for using food as personalized medicine and is now regularly consulted as the nutrition expert for the toughest clinical cases in the practices of many world-renowned doctors. The path to healing doesn't begin with a protocol—it begins with a story. Andrea Nakayama's powerful journey from caregiver to trailblazing functional nutritionist is a reminder that true wellness is personal, rooted, and deeply interconnected. Through loss, love, and resilience, she discovered that lasting health requires more than symptom management—it calls for curiosity, compassion, and the courage to slow down and truly listen to your body. Her message invites us to stop chasing quick fixes and instead embrace the transformational power of understanding our own biology, one small shift at a time. Key Takeaways: Slowing down your healing process helps you learn what truly works for your unique body. Mental and physical health are inseparable—connection, belonging, and digestion all influence the mind. Food is personal; learning how it interacts with your physiology empowers you to nourish rather than restrict. Chronic conditions aren't your identity—they're signals, and real healing starts at the root. Simple practices like balancing meals with fat, fiber, and protein or tuning into how food makes you feel can create major health breakthroughs. Happy Satiated Saturday! Something I've been noticing is how much we're taught to see any symptom as a sign that something is "wrong" and that we have to embark on a "healing journey" to "fix" the symptom. For a moment, try this out on your body. Tell it that there is something wrong that you need to fix. What do you notice? How does your body respond to that?Striving to “heal” your body sends the message to your body that you are in danger. Your body activates your sympathetic nervous system and takes all your internal resources away from repair toward survival. You cannot heal in a fight or flight state. To decrease any bodily symptom or food coping mechanism, you have to stop thinking of yourself as broken and needing to be fixed. Send us a textOne of my favorite teachers and mentors, Andrea Nakayama, joined me today to discuss what she believes is missing in traditional healthcare: our personal stories. So many of us are hyper focused on what we can do, what supplement we need, what lab to get done, what protocol to follow, how much protein to eat, etc. We are grasping for a fix. While these can be helpful, we often forget that the individual plays a critical role. Understanding our own narratives—reflecting on our life experiences, emotions, and individual histories—is often the missing piece.Engaging with the humanities (like poetry, art, and storytelling) cultivates deeper listening and understanding of who we are. Andrea underscores that this deeper connection can facilitate healing, especially for women navigating significant hormonal and life changes in perimenopause, menopause and post menopause. What moves us—our emotions and truths—can offer insight into our health and healing journeys. Andrea urges us to embrace our stories as powerful tools for improving our health and well-being and to include them as part of our healing journey. Andrea believes Narrative Medicine is what we are missing in Healthcare today.I deeply enjoyed this rich discussion with Andrea and I know you will too. It involves understanding the interconnectedness of the body, considering the broader context of a person's life, and incorporating elements like joy, laughter, and physical expression for overall well-being.

The US healthcare system is really good at 2 things. Diagnostics and emergency health care. Chronic health conditions? Heavy metal testing? Nutrition? Detoxification? Anti-aging?.. Not so much. But there are practitioners that are taking a more holistic approach to healthcare. Renowned Functional Medicine Nutritionist and founder of the Functional Nutrition Alliance, Andrea Nakayama, is one of those practitioners and she's taught thousands of others to do the same. On today's show, Andrea discusses the importance of understanding and addressing the root causes of health issues through a systems-based approach, investigating the roots (genes, digestion, inflammation), and encompassing food, movement, environment, and mindset. If you're on the search for practical tips or you've got this gut feeling that there has to be more to healthcare than taking pills, tune in, this episode is for you. “What I like to remind patients is that there are always two experts in the room. And one of those experts is you. The patient. And you can't be an expert if you don't do your inquiry, if you're handing over all your agency to another individual.” - Andrea Nakayama On Today's Podcast, You'll Learn: - Introduction and Guest Background - The Limitations of Conventional Medicine - The Three Roots, Many Branches Model - The Circle of Influence and the Role of Genes, Digestion, and Inflammation - The Importance of Self-Inquiry and Understanding Your Health - The Three Tiers to Nutrition Mastery - The Importance of Sleep in Detoxification and Anti-Aging - Functional Nutrition for Detoxification - The Dangers of Industrial Seed Oils - Understanding Unprocessed Fats - The Connection Between Detoxification and Hormones - The Role of Hormones in Anti-Aging - The Importance of Hormone Detoxification - The Importance of Progesterone for Women For more information, visit https://myersdetox.com/AndreaNakayama After listening to this episode, you might be wondering about heavy metals. In today's episode of the Balancing Chaos Podcast, Kelley sits down to dive deep with functional nutritionist Andrea Nakayama. Her goal is to pioneer the movement to transform healthcare into a system that WORKS. Andrea knows that a functional nutrition approach is the answer to our healthcare crisis, both for individuals and for society at large. Her method involves understanding the mechanisms that led to chronic disease in an individual; to uncover how and why that unique body has reacted as it has; to look at the evidence that familial history, lifestyle choices, and circumstances amass to become underlying physical factors of disease and distress; to reveal the biological tipping point that manifests as signs, symptoms and diagnoses; and to find and use the appropriate diet and lifestyle modifications that could actually help the chronically ill person get better. In this episode, Kelley and Andrea explore the gaps in the medical system when it comes to treating individuals as whole people rather than just their diagnoses. Together, they emphasize the importance of recognizing that doctors have limited medical training and may not have all the answers when it comes to alternative treatments such as a customized nutrition approach. Through their conversation you will learn the three roots of chronic disease, the problem with trendy diets and why they don't work, the circle of influence around inflammation, what your bowel movements have to say about your health, and SO much more! On today's podcast with powerhouse Rachel Scheer who is a Functional Medicine Nutritionist. Rachel's journey as a nutritionist began in bodybuilding and athletic performance, however, a couple years into her practice she began to suffer from severe gastrointestinal dysfunction (IBS.) After many false diagnoses, spending thousands of dollars on doctor visits and tests, and one doctor even suggesting the removal of her entire large intestine, Rachel decided to take her health into her own hands. Rachel says "using a functional approach and focusing on the health of the gut microbiome saved [her] life. All disease begins and ends in the gut, so rather than putting a 'band-aid' over an issue I.e. medications/drugs/surgery, we need to get to the root cause and that's what functional medicine comes in. My gut issues came from a bacteria imbalance or gut dysbiosis, and once I was able to address that through diet, stress, supplements, and lifestyle changes I was able to heal my body, avoid surgery, and come off dozens of medications I was put on over the years." On this episode we discuss all things healing from the inside out. For more info on Rachel, visit her website here. Or follow her on instagram, at @rachelscheer & @rachelscheernutrition.

You know how I feel about one-size-fits-all solutions to anything, and the health and wellness industry is no exception. So when we cover topics like todays, I'm always careful to bring people on who will share what they've learned, what they know to be true, their expertise BUT ALSO say that YOU need to figure out what's right, best, and true for you. Said another way, they offer solutions, just not the one-size fits all kind. With that in mind, let me introduce you to our guest. Andrea Nakayama is a Functional Medicine Nutritionist, educator, and Host of the 15-Minute Matrix Podcast, where she draws on systems biology, mental models, root cause methodology and the therapeutic partnership to offer long-awaited solutions for the rapidly growing chronic illness epidemic. Andrea is leading a revolution in which we reclaim OWNERSHIP over our own health. Here's all I know for sure: your body is yours, you only get one, and you're the only one who has to, who gets to, take care of it. There are many ways we can abandon ourselves, but hating our bodies so much that we don't even listen to them anymore has got to be pretty high up on the list. [04:11] When Appearance Matters Too Much: Unhealthy Extremes in Bodybuilding · Physical appearance alone does not determine overall health. · Pursuing extreme fitness goals can negatively affect physical and mental health. · Public praise and external validation can disguise unhealthy habits and behaviors. · Neglecting mental health while focusing solely on physical fitness can have detrimental effects. · Seeking professional medical advice is crucial, but it's important to consider a holistic approach to health and explore alternative solutions. [18:09] Diversity of the Gut Microbiome and Changing to a Healthy Diet · A diverse gut microbiome is linked to better overall health, including metabolic and mental health. · The standard American diet can lead to low diversity and bacterial overgrowth in the gut. · Switching to a healthy diet may cause bloating and digestive issues if the gut lacks the necessary bacteria to digest certain foods. · The problem lies in the microbiome composition rather than the healthy foods. · Gradual transition to a healthy diet can help the gut adapt and develop the necessary bacteria for proper digestion. [23:51] What is the truth about stomach acid? · Low stomach acid production is more common than excessive acid production. · Insufficient stomach acid can lead to improper digestion of proteins, causing reflux-like symptoms. · Drinking highly alkaline water for extended periods may potentially lower stomach acid levels. · Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and antacids can contribute to bacterial overgrowth in the gut. · Stomach acid serves as a first-line defense against pathogens, and its reduction can lead to increased bacterial overgrowth. [34:48] Body Fat Percentage: What Is Right for Women? · Body fat percentage varies individually and can affect women differently. · Women's optimal body fat range is typically between 16% and 23%. · Extra fat around ovaries and breast tissue is essential for reproductive health. · Women tend to store more fat in the lower body (pear shape), while men store more around the midsection (apple shape). · Monitoring body fat percentage is more important than focusing solely on weight. [38:30] What is the negative effect of using antibiotics? · Antibiotics can disrupt the balance of bacteria in the microbiome. · Overuse of antibiotics should be avoided to maintain a healthy microbiome. · Supporting the gut lining with supplements like L-glutamine and aloe vera can be beneficial during antibiotic use. · Consider spore-based probiotics or food-based sources for rebuilding the microbiome. · Focus on a diet rich in prebiotics, fermented foods, and polyphenols to support microbiome recovery. The Root Cause Medicine Podcast is a weekly one-on-one conversation with renowned medical experts, specialists, and pioneers who are influencing the way we look at our health and wellbeing. This week we're joined by Katie Morra, Functional Medicine Nutritionist and Founder of Gut Honest Truth. In this episode, Katie Morra talks about all things related to the gastrointestinal system, including Helicobacter pylori, indigestion, and GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease). Katie is an accomplished expert in gut health, specializing in Functional Medicine Nutrition and holding certification from the Institute for Functional Medicine. With over ten years of invaluable experience, Katie has had the opportunity to help numerous patients by utilizing a holistic approach that incorporates comprehensive laboratory testing, targeted supplement protocols, and lifestyle adjustments. Her primary focus is on identifying the underlying causes of inflammation, autoimmune diseases, irritable bowel syndrome, food sensitivities, and other chronic conditions. In addition to her successful patient treatments, Katie takes pride in her role as an educator. She has had the privilege of training various healthcare professionals, including nutritionists, dietitians, MDs, PAs, NPs, and health coaches. Through her guidance, these practitioners gain the skills and knowledge to confidently interpret laboratory results, evaluate complex cases, and provide effective treatment plans for their own patients. Key Takeaways: The health risks of heartburn, GERD, and acid reflux Heartburn, GERD, or acid reflux can impact your overall health. Contrary to popular belief, these conditions are not solely caused by excessive acid production. They occur when the pressure within your intra abdominal cavities forces stomach acid in the wrong direction. When acid reflux happens, it can lead to several negative consequences. The acidic nature of the refluxed contents can irritate and inflame the lining of the esophagus and throat. This irritation can cause discomfort and interfere with your day-to-day activities, significantly impacting your quality of life. Moreover, chronic or severe cases of acid reflux can pose more serious risks. Prolonged exposure to stomach acid can contribute to the development of Barrett's esophagus, a condition characterized by abnormal changes in the lining of the esophagus. Barrett's esophagus, in turn, increases the risk of esophageal cancer. Unveiling the symptoms of indigestion reflux Frequent indigestion reflux often leads to a rapid sensation of fullness. During meals, you may frequently experience burping or even food regurgitation, especially after consuming large meals. Additionally, constant nausea and a persistent burning sensation are commonly reported symptoms. Less common symptoms associated with indigestion reflux include wheezing, dry cough, or the development of nodules. Hoarseness can also occur. Some individuals may feel a pressure-like sensation in the upper region of the abdominal cavity and have the urge to push on it. However, identifying these symptoms becomes somewhat more challenging when experiencing silent reflux. Understanding the causes of indigestion and heartburn Various factors can contribute to the development of indigestion and heartburn. While there can be multiple causes, one common factor is the buildup of pressure that pushes things in the wrong direction. Conditions such as hiatal hernias can play a significant role in this regard. Structural issues also contribute to the development of indigestion and heartburn. Infections, particularly Helicobacter pylori, are known to be significant contributors. Many people may be familiar with H. pylori, as it is a commonly recognized cause of these digestive problems. A mindful approach to food and diet There is a specific dietary approach aimed at reducing acidity and promoting better digestive health. This entails eliminating foods such as caffeine, chocolate, highly acidic and spicy foods, as well as heavily fried foods, which can be particularly irritating to the stomach lining. However, it's important to note that dietary preferences and sensitivities vary among individuals. Certain foods, such as gluten, dairy, soy, and eggs, can trigger for some people. These items might need to be avoided to manage symptoms effectively. But it's crucial to consider other factors as well. For instance, if you have low stomach acid, you might experience difficulties in digesting protein. Thus, it's worth paying attention to your body's response when consuming beef, pork, or chicken. It might not necessarily be related to acidity but rather an issue with protein digestion. Alcohol can also cause discomfort for some individuals and should be monitored accordingly. Additionally, some people may experience reflux due to high-fiber foods if there is an underlying bacterial overgrowth in the digestive system. Addressing indigestion In addition to chewing food thoroughly, there are various strategies individuals can employ to address indigestion. To tackle this issue comprehensively, one can undertake various actions, including diagnostic tests such as stool and breath tests for SIBO. Moreover, implementing a diverse set of approaches, from dietary modifications to stress management, can prove beneficial. Additionally, there exists a plethora of supplements that can be considered, offering potential relief from indigestion symptoms.
