After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear. At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” After they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.” -Matthew 14:22-33 "Because Jacob loved Rachel, he answered, 'I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel.' Far be it from you! Should not the judge of all the world do what is just?”g26The LORD replied: If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.27Abraham spoke up again: “See how I am presuming to speak to my Lord, though I am only dust and ashes!h28What if there are five less than fifty righteous people? Will you destroy the whole city because of those five?” I will not destroy it, he answered, if I find forty-five there.29But Abraham persisted, saying, “What if only forty are found there?” He replied: I will refrain from doing it for the sake of the forty.30Then he said, “Do not let my Lord be angry if I go on. What if only thirty are found there?” He replied: I will refrain from doing it if I can find thirty there.31Abraham went on, “Since I have thus presumed to speak to my Lord, what if there are no more than twenty?” I will not destroy it, he answered, for the sake of the twenty.32But he persisted: “Please, do not let my Lord be angry if I speak up this last time. What if ten are found there?” For the sake of the ten, he replied, I will not destroy it.i 33The LORD departed as soon as he had finished speaking with Abraham, and Abraham returned home.” Genesis 18: 22-33 “53Are you greater than our father Abraham,* who died? Episode Notes: Happy Independence Day! This topic came up completely unrelated to the 4th of July holiday, but upon reflection it couldn’t have taken place on a more appropriate date! “Can’t see the forest for the trees.” Does the Black Lives Matter movement move us to look more deeply at our own faults and imperfections, or does it fan in us a level of indignant pride? Episode Notes: “It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. Kyel and Matt discuss the overall climate in our current society surrounding racial injustices and the various reactions coming from groups with differing points of view. As Christians, how should we view all of this? Are we finding ourselves losing our peace in the midst of all the civil unrest? What did Jesus and the Apostles teach us that might be useful for us to keep in mind when the world seems to be falling apart around us?
Episode Notes Happy Pentecost Sunday! Communication is key to any good marriage. As husbands, how do we conduct ourselves as a loving servant, without becoming a doormat? Look to Jesus as our guide for how to serve those we love. “So, during supper, fully aware that the Father had put everything into his power and that he had come from God and was returning to God, he rose from supper and took off his outer garments. He took a towel and tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and dry them with the towel around his waist. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Master, are you going to wash my feet?’ Jesus answered and said to him, ‘What I am doing, you do not understand now, but you will understand later.’ Peter said to him, ‘You will never wash my feet.’ Jesus answered him, ‘Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me.’ Simon Peter said to him, ‘Master, then not only my feet, but my hands and head as well.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Whoever has bathed has no need except to have his feet washed, for he is clean all over; so you are clean, but not all.’ For he knew who would betray him; for this reason, he said, ‘Not all of you are clean.’ So when he had washed their feet and put his garments back on and reclined at table again, he said to them, ‘Do you realize what I have done for you? You call me ‘teacher” and ‘master,’ and rightly so, for indeed I am. If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should do also. Amen, amen, I say to you, no slave is greater than his master nor any messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you understand this, blessed are you if you do it.” John 13: 2-17 Who do we serve; ourselves, or our loved ones whom God has placed in our care? Are we using household chores as a means to escape from the more important tasks God has placed in front of you? "When I was a child, I used to talk as a child, think as a child, reason as a child; when I became a man, I put aside childish things." 1 Corinthians 13:11

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven. Thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Matthew 5:11-12
Kyel and Matt discuss the topic of “root sins”, namely: Pride, Vanity, and Sensuality. What are they? How do they manifest themselves? How do we counteract them? They also go on a fairly lengthy tangent regarding feminine qualities in men. Enjoy! EPISODE NOTES: “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith. For the sake of the joy that lay before him he endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God. Consider how he endured such opposition from sinners, in order that you may not grow weary and lose heart. In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood. You have also forgotten the exhortation addressed to you as sons: “My son, do not disdain the discipline of the Lord or lose heart when reproved by him; for whom the Lord loves, he disciplines; he scourges every son he acknowledges.’ Endure your trials as discipline; God treats you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are without discipline, in which all have shared, you are not sons but bastards.” Hebrews 12:1-8 "The Imitation of Christ" - Thomas A Kempis https://www.amazon.com/Imitation-Christ-Zippered-Cover/dp/1618902156/ref=sr_1_8?crid=3N1Z9DRQ0TBCJ&dchild=1&keywords=imitation+of+christ+thomas+a+kempis&qid=1589167680&s=books&sprefix=imitation+%2Cstripbooks%2C172&sr=1-8

Matthew 28:19-20 "I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.” John 17:20-21 “Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. She had a sister called Mary, who was seated at the Lord's feet, listening to His word. But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, "Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me." But the Lord answered and said to her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her." You're in for a treat as Matt and Kyel release this bonus episode to get you through the myriad of cancellations, segregations, hyperbolizations and toilet paper rations. This episode is on nothing in particular, but bounces from COVID-19, to Dave Matthews Band (actually Counting Crows, but seriously, who cares?), to the Psalms of David. Enjoy.
Kyel and Matt discuss justification through faith, which leads to God pouring the supernatural grace of Charity into our hearts, and how it is only through the grace of Charity that we are able to do good works. So ultimately, our good works flow from justification, not the other way around. Kyel also brings up the hot topic of COVID-19, and grills Matt on female involvement in the Catholic liturgy. EPISODE NOTES “Prayer is the raising of one’s mind and heart to God, or the requesting of good things from God.” - St. John Damascene “Late have I loved Thee, O Beauty so ancient and so new; late have I loved Thee! For Behold, Thou were within me, and I outside, and I sought Thee outside and in my unloveliness fell upon those lovely things that Thou hast made. Thou were with me and I was not with Thee. I was kept from Thee by those things, yet had they not been in Thee, they would not have been at all. Thou didst call and cry to me and break open my deafness, and Thou didst send forth Thy beams and shine upon me and chase away my blindness, Thou didst breathe fragrance upon me, and I drew in my breath and do not pant for Thee, and now hunger and thirst for Thee, Thou didst touch me, and I have burned for Thy peace.” – St. Augustine, Confessions St. Thomas Aquinas’ “Summa Theologica” https://www.amazon.com/Summa-Theologiae-Saint-Thomas-Aquinas/dp/1623400147/ref=asc_df_1623400147/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312114918153&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=6608980805320404512&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9027720&hvtargid=pla-425752472804&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=58874700661&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=312114918153&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=6608980805320404512&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9027720&hvtargid=pla-425752472804 “And He said to them, "Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.” Matthew 17:20 The Trouble with Yoga - https://www.catholic.com/magazine/print-edition/the-trouble-with-yoga Formed.org talk by Francis Cardinal Arinze on the Catechism of the Catholic Church: https://watch.formed.org/videos/catechism-of-the-catholic-church-a-sure-guide-for-the-modern-world-by-francis-cardinal-arinze Check out our website: www.laymentalitypodcast.com Email us at: info@laymentalitypodcast.com Follow our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/laymentality/?__tn__=%2CdkCH-R-R&eid=ARB7JmZNfkd5jJbqtq_eNYZRVg5yvq0Kj637Em9YXU0XWkemRcI1qRa4cFB847Rrq-PTjAVcK0qf6dVH&hc_ref=ARTMuPhTq-VsfupBxmnkkoUzjGhE3RAxDsUp8SegDrlD6uRkhMwscY69dpxSzPyVa1Y&fref=nf&hc_location=group

Matt and Kyel dive into a discussion on the 2020 Pepsi Halftime Show, and the provocative nature of the performances by Shakira and Jennifer Lopez. Matt quotes Christopher West’s book Theology of the Body for Beginners “If you want to know what is most sacred in this world, all we need to do is look for what is most violently profaned.” Matt quotes Jason Everett regarding the beauty of the female body, and how that is part of God’s plan for us. Kyel and Matt start their seven-part series on the sacraments, getting things kicked off with an episode on the sacrament of baptism. Who should be baptized? What is baptism? When should someone be baptized? Where does baptism take place? Why do we need to be baptized? How does baptism happen? These would've been great questions to answer in the podcast, but in typical Laymentality fashion, they only inadvertently brush against one or two of them. Kyel and Matt take a dive into the hot and controversial topic of abortion, attempting to faithfully present the teachings of the Catholic church, while also making a sincere effort to understand the opposite side. Matt is trying his best to keep his kids alive for 3 days while his wife is on retreat, Kyel's mom is their only @Laymentality Twitter follower, and both Kyel and Matt appreciate their newfound fan, Melissa, whom Matt met at a recent Blessed Is She Epiphany Party.
Kyel and Matt start the new year right by talking about mortification of the flesh. Quotes galore from sources including "The Imitation of Christ" by Thomas A Kempis, The Book of Sirach, St. Basil the Great, the Catechism, Zechariah, you name it, we probably quoted it in this episode. We flex our ignorance as we fail to identify the virtue opposite jealousy, and Kyel wants all you who spread toast on your jelly to just stop it already. Put the jelly on the toast, it's too messy the other way around.

Kyel and Matt interview Jonathan Cardinal, a FOCUS missionary working on the University of Northern Colorado campus to lead college students to a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. Jonathan is doing amazing work, and he shared some seriously insightful things during our interview, so check it out. It's late, and I'm tired, so that's all the summary this episode is going to get. Kyel and Matt sit down with the first guest to grace the Laymentality airwaves, Dr. Peter Kwasniewski! The three of them discuss the beauty of the Traditional Liturgy, and touch on some common misconceptions among Catholics and non-catholics alike. Kyel and Matt are so grateful to Dr. Kwasniewski for spending time with them, and hope you'll welcomes this potentially controversial topic with the same open arms you'll use at Thanksgiving dinner to greet your hard-headed Aunt Sally and prejudiced Uncle Bob.
Kyel and Matt discuss a topic suggested by a fan (AKA Matt's dad): the uniqueness of every individual. The conversation wanders between Hellen Keller, Snowflakes, and PETA, and eventually draws out Kyel's country twang. Kyel and Matt discuss the importance of being obedient to the authority of the Catholic Church, even with regards to issues we don't fully agree with. Kyel battles the Polka-Dot monster with his boys, and Matt fixed the terrible sound quality heard on the previous episode simply by turning his microphone on. We hope you're enjoying the show, and if so, please tell your friends about it! Leave a rating, subscribe, comment, and tell us what age your children started walking at laymentality@gmail.com.
Kyel and Matt discuss Pope Francis's propensity to make ambiguous statements that cause confusion among Catholics. Matt goes brain-dead when trying to say "the true presence of Jesus' body, blood, soul, and divinity in the Eucharist", Kyel brings up the one thing Matt specifically asked him not to bring up, and the most entertaining part of their conversation took place after they stopped recording... Kyel and Matt talk about the subtle ways the Holy Spirit works in their lives, often unnoticed and unappreciated. Kyel's wife gives birth, Matt builds up the courage to approach a stranger on a retreat, and neither Matt nor Kyel know what it's like to push a baby through their birth canal. Matt and Kyel start off talking about the difference in faith formation for adults versus children, and the conversation wanders onto a topic Matt and Kyel don't see perfectly eye-to-eye on, "How connected should Catholic laity be to the Church hierarchy's daily inner-workings?" Kyel is eager to squash any heresy foolish enough to show its face, while Matt prefers a life of peaceful solitude. Kyel and Matt discuss the need to scrutinize ourselves before judging others, and the subtle (or not so subtle) differences between "judging" and "condemning". Kyel thinks the label "LGBTQ" is prohibitively mouth-filling, Matt takes a subtle jab at Kyel's first-grade level penmanship, and Kyel wants to be free to speak the truth when the truth needs speaking. If you're gonna judge anyone, start with Kyel and Matt by leaving a rating and comment on iTunes. Send photos of your fall decor to laymentality@gmail.com.
Kyel and Matt discuss the tendency to falsely correlate emotionally charged praise and worship experiences with achieving maximum holiness. Matt's kids are oblivious to proper church etiquette, Kyel thinks adoration at high school youth conferences should resemble after-school detention, and terms like Spiritual Consolation and Desolation get thrown around all willy-nilly. Kyel and Matt spend an inordinate amount of time talking about bugs, before skillfully transitioning to their main topic. Did you catch the sarcasm there? All Christians are called to evangelize others, and what better place to answer said call than your place of work? Matt and Kyel share their successes and failures in their efforts to become better witnesses of the Catholic faith. Matt talks about the added stress he and his wife are feeling as their youngest child is sick with Chickenpox. Kyel subsequently spends a lot of time trying not to say what he means in an effort to avoid offending anyone. Finances are tricky, careers can get sticky, and what do we do when our kids get all sicky? If you enjoy the podcast we ask that you please leave us a rating and a comment. Kyel's very pregnant wife decides she wants a new house, right away, so Kyel goes into overdrive fixing up their current house to put it on the market. Problems arise, frustration boils over into "gargantuan" ordeals, and Kyel is again reminded of how broken he is and how much he needs God's grace. Matt stumbles through a crudely paraphrased and woefully inadequate summary of the bible in an attempt to describe salvation history, Kyel shares a few witty(?) phrases he's coined, and Matt believes God's Divine Providence is the lens that'll help us all see the world right-side-up. Kyel and Matt introduce their new and improved intro music, composed and performed by Matt's brother-in-law, Tim Lienhard. Kyel is perturbed by people who claim God for themselves, Matt gets cold feet making the sign of the cross at business lunches, and Kyel enjoys it when Jesus clowns on the scribes and Pharisees. Kyel and Matt talk about the how reality is constantly warped, twisted, and skewed by the evolution (or devolution?) of cultures, competing agendas, and general confusion regarding objective truth. Kyel plays with Plato in a cave, Matt zigzags through life in a constant state of error, and they both ruined their children's childhoods by telling them Santa Claus isn't real. Kyel and Matt discuss ways they struggle with becoming too immersed in things of this world, leading to a kind of self-enforced slavery. An epic quote-off ensues, professional dart throwing is discussed, and the big takeaway is the discovery that the word "materialism" is a 6 syllable word.
