Akitas: Guardian Dogs of the Samurai [caption id="attachment_13805" align="alignleft" width="441"] Colleen Sullivan and one of her Sondaisa Akitas.[/caption] Colleen Sullivan joins host Laura Reeves for a Love the Breeds episodes on Akitas. The breed, one of six national monuments in Japan, was introduced to the US by Hellen Keller in 1937. Originally used as guard dogs and companions for the Samurai warriors, the breed is quiet, clean and very devoted to their owners. Sullivan notes that the breed is best for owners who are willing to be leaders in the relationship and that same sex aggression with other dogs and wariness with strangers is par for the course with the breed. Sullivan agreed with Laura's description of the breed as “people with fur” and treating them that way. “They think too much sometimes,” Sullivan said. “If you hesitate, if you're not a calm, confident person, yeah, you're suspicious (to the dog). You're not gonna walk up to some stranger or allow some stranger to give you a hug and a kiss. You know, you're just not. It's like dogs there's Golden Retrievers the extrovert and then there's Akita the introvert. "One of the things we all have in common that have owned an Akita is pride. They're such magnificent dogs, magnificent beings. They're like artwork but with power." Easy grooming, with the exception of “blowing coat,” and a cat-like insistence on cleanness make the breed easy to live with in Sullivan's experience. Training Akitas requires some creativity, Sullivan said, and an ability to make the dog think the work is their idea. Consistency is key to training. “You can't let your dog jump all over you one time and then get mad at it the next time,” Sullivan said. “You have to mean what you say.” Bloat can be an issue with the breed. Sullivan encourages owners to be educated about this disease. “I hesitate to make this statement, but one of the things that I do because the Akita is such a primitive breed, it's one of the oldest breeds, is I look at more the wolves and the coyotes and how they exercise and how they eat. All the exercise is done because they're chasing their prey. Then they're gorging themselves and they're getting all these bodily fluids and all of that, and then they rest. So all my (dogs') exercise is before eating, they get lots of fluid on their food when they're eating. And then rest.”

It's not every day that you get an email from ACLU. If you aren't aware, since being co-founded in part by Hellen Keller in New York City in 1920, the American Civil Liberties Union has been involved in dozens of major cases defending the fundamental civil rights of individuals and causes both popular and very much not so. In 1925, the ACLU represented high school science teacher, John Scopes, in what became known as the Scopes Monkey Trial. Nearly 30 years later they played a significant role in the Brown v Board decision overturning “separate but equal” education for Black and white students. So when they reached out wanting to do a podcast episode with us about the state of Title IX in 2024, I had to say yes. In the past we've done episodes about how classroom teachers can best support LGBTQ students in potentially hostile policy environments, but we are well overdue for a national look at the current rights under Title IX for LGBTQIA+ students, pregnant and parenting students, and for all students facing sex-based harassment and assault and the obligations schools have to protect them.Jennesa Calvo-Friedman is currently a staff attorney at the ACLU. Previously, she was the Marvin M. Karpatkin Fellow with the ACLU's Racial Justice Program. Before joining the ACLU, Calvo-Friedman clerked for the Honorable Gerard E. En el centenario de su nacimiento, ocurrido en 1880, el estado americano de Pensilvania declaró el 27 de junio como el Día de Helen Keller, promovido por el museo dedicado a esta audaz personalidad que, probablemente, muchos ya conocéis. La estadounidense Helen Adams Keller, conferenciante, activista y escritora, fue una mujer extraordinaria. Debido a unas fiebres altas cuando apenas tenía dos años, Helen se quedó ciega, muda y sorda. A los 7 años inventó hasta 60 signos para comunicarse con una amiga, pero su comportamiento errático dejó a su familia preocupada por la necesidad de ingresarla en un centro. Aun así, su madre no se rindió y tras leer sobre la posible educación de otro niño ciego y sordo en una obra de Dickens, recorrió varias instituciones, hasta llegar al Instituto Perkins para ciegos, en Boston, animada por el inventor del teléfono, Alexander Graham Bell, que trabajaba con niños sordos en esa época. Hey, this month we are doing a webinar for those who want help overcoming pornography  If you're listening to this podcast and like what you hear, take the next step and come to our webinar on april 20th at 730 mt, there's a link in the show notes or you can go to zachspafford.com/freecall The seed for today's podcast came from a post by a guy named Kris Heap.  in that he equated success to the way that an auction happens.   Everything we do has a price.  In order to achieve desired results in our lives we have to be willing to cover the cost.   We pay those costs in a variety of different ways.  Money Time Energy Effort Discomfort Commitment Willingness Some of those seem synonymous and some of them have varied connotations, but whatever you want to call it, doesn't really matter.  You and everyone you know, pays for what we get.   Darcy's family comes from an amazing history of auctioneers.  What are some of the cool things your grandpa and dad and uncles were part of auctioning off? Darcy- I sent my dad a text and asked him about the most interesting things that he had auctioned.   Hellen Keller - we still have some of her pieces at my parents house, including this Giant Tiger scroll that is in a japanese style Revson Estate - which was the owner of Revlon In their work as auctioneers they saw this happen so many times. As the price of the item goes up, fewer people will seek to put forth the cost of getting the thing they are bidding on.   The true value of the item is revealed based on the amount the people who are bidding are willing to pay for the item.    In our work, people have come to us and tell us that they have a pornography addiction.   Last week I talked about why I don't like using the term pornography addiction, but that is what people tell us, and we are happy to meet them where they are.  In fact, last week we did a poll and about 80% of the people that responded said they felt like they were addicted to pornography or they believed their spouse is.  In a way, that person who is talking to us is placing an opening bid on overcoming their pornography struggle.  When we talk to people they want to know, what is it actually going to take.  That first conversation is the opening bid, and it is a pretty low one.   What's the cost of the conversation? Basically, nothing. A little time. Darcy and I love speaking to people and we love sharing our story, we do it for free in fifth Sunday lessons, zoom meetings like the one that I mentioned earlier, firesides, and in everyday conversations with random people who are impacted by pornography use in their lives.  Each of those conversations is amazing and I think it elevates awareness and possibilities for each person to a new level.  Every time Darcy does a fireside, or speaks to a Sunday school class, she just lights up and is happy for days.  We get an immense amount of joy out of the work we do.  We want you to get an immense amount of joy out of the work we do as well. So, we would like to talk about the transactional cost of overcoming pornography.   If you think back to the auctioneer, only those who are willing to pay the price receive the prize.  That is as true in commerce as it is in our mental and emotional lives.   A contractor, like an auctioneer, often puts out bids to see what people are willing to pay to get their place remodeled.   Remodeling pornogrpahy out of your life is like remodeling your home.  Looking at what is there, deciding you don't like it, and figuring out, what will it take to make my life look the way I want it to.   So, we've put together a cost sheet.
