Well, I heard a story of when Sears was creating the big shopping experiences for American families in the early 1900's (1924 specifically) On April 9, 1924, Sears own radio station signed on with 500 watts, with offices on the 11th floor of the Sears 14-story “skyscraper” at Homan and Artlington Street in downtown Chicago. The radio station was titled WLS, this stood for "Worlds Largest Store". In my opinion, this is brilliant, their own station to entertain the modern American lifestyle. And if you realize, this is actually an early version of HGTV for radio listeners. (remember radio is the early entertainment before TV and Podcasts). LOL You may be asking, what does this have to do with my art or creative business, well, I will tell you - it has a lot do do with this. By Sears creating their own radio station, they got to focus on their market, they got to sell to their customers direct, they had a voice right in your ear. Can you imaging the amount of amazing radio and commercial coverage they were able to to to get MORE business into Sears? Heck, did you know that you could even buy a home kit to build your own house from Sears back in the day? Yes , it's true! Well they should, and you will have your own quote for success too! You are your best Superhero, you can achieve super powers with fending off the forces of doubt. Be prepared, get your cape, shield and best superhero stance to bring you to the best in what you so without falling victim to The Imposter Syndrome.  Your success in your business is on adopting courage, get your metal arsenal in ch, raise the anty, get your game face on, keep reinventing and put on your Superhero cape. make it part of who you are. Stand the stance, raise your head, feel like you can totally take over the world. Be your own Superhero ! Believe that you can – We all get knocked down in life, with personal issues, business, professional life etc. You simply wipe your knees off, get up, stay tenacious, and conquer your best self... and the world! Get back up and move forward. Is failure an option??? sure....Failure is an option if you allow it to be. Believing in yourself is the key to being the best Superhero . Shield your passions, superheros know how to deflect the Negative Nancy's, the nay-sayers, and the Debbie Downers. Protect what you are passionate about and use that shield to protect you from that discouragement. Comments from these negative people can and will hinder your ability to move forward. The imposter syndrome. This is one of the all time villains of the entrepreneurial business world. The villain is really good at capturing its prey, it causes you to doubt your expertise, your knowledge, it kicks you when you are down and will bite your head off if you are not careful. Do not let the imposter syndrome villain get the best of you. Get your weapons, your shield, sword, spidey senses, rays guns and your positive mindset to chase away this nasty and persistent villain. You know you look amazing in your Superhero crown, you cape and stance, so why do we let this villain get the best of us. Because it's human nature to cast doubt upon yourself. Ep. 104: Competition, Collaboration and Character, no trophies please Let me ask you, if you drank a weak cup of coffee that appeared less than stellar how would you feel? Would you give it a participation trophy and call it a day? Would you return it and know that there was potential there... somewhere? I know there is no loss for this cup of coffee and it can be better. Stronger, Bolder, Great, This weeks show I am focusing on "Competition, Collaboration and Character, with no trophies please!" I learned to "suck it up" when I was growing up to strive to be my best, to learn lessons based on my own failures, to know what it feels like to lose at things, to not getting that perfect job, to have the ability to build character without losing integrity. working hard for that promotion, being rewarded for my hard work, and achieving success....not because I just showed up. I know this may be a hot topic for some and a "heck ya" moment for many others. I have two sons whom I taught to take pride in the work that they do and follow through with their projects and passions. There were no participation trophies in our house, you earned your way to achieve the reward and feeling accomplishment in that feat. (plus these PT's were relatively new on the scene and it wasn't bad that they thought participation trophies were dumb in the first place).  My theory is that these started with a lonely trophy guy who had way too much inventory and wanted a clever way to re-market trophies and came up with this money making idea. You might consider this the no trophy zone.....There is such an amazing feeling to have worked hard to accomplish something, whether its a sport, job, project, or business, maybe it's because I have been around and have worked in such strict work places and environments, when you didn't carry the load in your job, you knew it! When you had to shake the hands of the winners at a softball game when your team was the one that lost, you learned and dealt with the consequences.  As far as I recall, we felt disappointed in the loss, but the takeaway was to work together as a team and practice to be better. To be great. These skills and personal challenges are an important factor to build character and boost self respect so that you can sustain and be tough for all of the challenges that life will be throwing at you. Today's episode will be an honest and truth be told summary of how to toughen up and become resilient to these competitive and sometime ruthless encounters that we have to deal with in today's business and personal environments. Ep. 098 Challenging yourself to explore new and exciting things.When you take risks and get out of your comfort zone, amazing things happen! Unleashing undiscovered talents is the beginning to expanding your knowledge.I am thrilled to announce that Rockstar Mentor is two years old! We have reached the two year mark and have recored 98 episodes to this point! Yeah!!!As much as I love my acrylic painting "roots" I have expanded my knowledge for other styles and mediums of art. My creative repertoire includes creating in glass (lampwork), polymer clay, mixed media, oils painting, watercolor, calligraphy, photography, bookmaking, art journaling, hand lettering and so much more. Until recently I have been afraid to indulge in the textile arts, i.e., quilting or pattern making. I found the designs and the intricacy so intimidating that it never really seemed to appeal to me. But as I looked closer into the technical aspects of this fabric, thread and patterned medium, I discovered the mastery of how it was all compiled. I am not too much of a planner when I create, I like to let things arrive to me naturally and organic, unless it's a commissioned artwork where more planning might be necessary, I really like to let the creativity flow. This is where I discovered the art of "Improv Quilting" and the abstract and spontaneous placement of fabric scraps and strips to acheive amazing results. Yes! Finally another artistic outlet where I can get crazy! Whooo hoooo!I jumped into this with both feet, now this does not mean that I am giving up my other creative talents, but I am expanding the knowledge to learn something else and not feeling intimidated to try something new. I am overcoming the fear of failing and giving in to the newness and freshness of it all. Ep. 095 Paying It Forward in Your Art Creative Business Giving is a strong component in any business, get your Karma flowing by following a few simple steps. When you can give back with your art, advice, support or emotional support, this is a great thing to do by paying it forward, random acts of art is also a great way to make someones day and will allow you to be creative and bold without judgement.  I used to do "Adopt a doodles" when I had my fine art gallery, I would post these doodles around town and in local areas to let others discover my art... for free and it was really fun because I was providing happiness and also getting my brand out there.  A couple of the artists that I know that have done this are my friend Ed Heck (I interviewed him on RSM episode 080) and also another pioneer of this random acts of arts and public arts projects, my amazing pal, the late Todd Marrone. Ep. 093 Your business website needs to be YOUR domain, take control and be better prepared to promote you and your business! Being smart and savvy with your web presence is critical for the  long term value of your business. This episode is really valuable so you have have the ultimate voice and to make the best decisions for your website and the messages you want to relate. Be careful allowing social media platforms to control what you can say, what you can post and how to can manage your business.  Do you want these big names in social media to know everything about your business and are your best interests at heart, are the things they are telling you true, are the ads you are investing in really being targeted to your paid audience.   With the ongoing changes of social media, your web presence can be compromised and can possibly get shut down or suspended at any time (with little or no notice). You get hit with another algorithm change that will seriously affect the way you manage your business. Ep. 086 Will Smith says "Fan Your Own Flame!" I'm also discussing the mask behind Imposter Syndrome! I've said it before but Will Smith gets in your face to fan your own flame. I have said it for years, to be your own cheerleader and self promote to your hearts content... to not take anyones crap and to persevere and to march to your own drummer... with confidence. However Will smith's recent rant on social media reinforces to all to not take anyones negativity and to surround yourself with positive people. People that will feed your ideas and not diss on them. Sometimes when this happens, this can lead to the imposter syndrome and the consequences that follow these feelings.  As much as I preach this simple logic to all artists and entrpreneurs and business people, Will seems to have a larger fan base than me, so I am sharing his video - Enjoy! While we start off the new year getting the most organized we can be, do you have a specific work space?  Is this your living room table, kitchen table, sewing room, office...?  What is your space like.  Do you have a designated place that is all yours where you can create and then close a door to keep your projects ready for you?
