Today, I had a blast from the past on the show – my friend and long-time karaoke bud, Sonya Paz. This woman is a freakin' powerhouse, juggling more businesses than I can count on one hand. She's a professional artist, gallery owner, podcaster, and even has a candied jalapeño business. I swear, if there's a way to turn creativity into cash, Sonya's found it. All my multi-talented, multi-passionate creative folks... this one's for you.Can't-Miss Moments:Mic drop: what do you say when someone has the audacity to crap all over your dreams? Sonya's got a few ideas (use thiswith the naysayers in your life)... Surprise podcast benefits: Sonya and I break down the unexpected side of starting your own show (this is why I say sharing stories is more than just a business bandwagon move)...Detour down memory lane: I share one of my favorite karaoke moments from back in the day. You'll never guess which song she's a total PRO at singing... The mind-blowing story behind Sonya's latest podcast, "Investigated," and why it's more than "just another true crime series"...Why you shouldn't be afraid to reach out to people you admire – Sonya and I both have some strong feelings on this one!Sonya's bio:Artist Sonya Paz has created wild new direction in the Pop Art… movement through her exuberant use of color and playful forms. A fine artist turned foodie with Sonya’s Sweet and Spicy! Sonya is known for her vivid popular pop art paintings and retail products. But in the last couple of years she’s been working on a flavorful new adventure that has caught everyone (including herself) by surprise! After moving out of the hustle and bustle of the San Jose area, she now lives in the central valley of California where agriculture is abundant and the flavors are wild! Sonya started canning and preserving foods and has now created a recipe that transforms a super spicy jalapeño into something calmer … something sweet and spicy. She’d take these candied sweet jalapeños to potlucks and family gatherings and watch it be devoured within seconds! Seeing that response, she worked with a food scientist and now sells Sonya’s Sweet and Spicy direct to individuals, specialty shops and grocery stores to bring her sweet and spicy candy pickle jalapeños to the masses. Life is always better when you can have a little sweet and spice in your life! Business Building InsightsA non-disclosure agreement is a must before entering into any type of business relationship with an outside company. Finding a co-packer involves a lot of research. It starts with a google search to find those who provide services that match your needs. Then you move on to interviewing and asking a lot of questions to make sure it’s a good fit. It’s important to spend some time on this step to prevent issues down the road. Take into consideration your future expansion plans when naming your business. People who love your work are your best evangelists as you expand. Many in Sonya’s loyal art following are also interested in Sonya’s Sweet and Spicy. Don’t get discouraged when you encounter problems. Keep moving forward and think outside the box. Use a craft or trade show as an opportunity to make connections even if you’re not making a lot of sales. Then follow up with people where you see potential sales or collaborations. Ep. 086 Will Smith says "Fan Your Own Flame!" I'm also discussing the mask behind Imposter Syndrome! I've said it before but Will Smith gets in your face to fan your own flame. I have said it for years, to be your own cheerleader and self promote to your hearts content... to not take anyones crap and to persevere and to march to your own drummer... with confidence. However Will smith's recent rant on social media reinforces to all to not take anyones negativity and to surround yourself with positive people. People that will feed your ideas and not diss on them. Sometimes when this happens, this can lead to the imposter syndrome and the consequences that follow these feelings.  As much as I preach this simple logic to all artists and entrpreneurs and business people, Will seems to have a larger fan base than me, so I am sharing his video - Enjoy! Episode 064: Ahhhh the heated subject of taboo topics, i.e., conversations of politics, religion and everything controversial.  Will discussing these in a business arena affect your customer base? Is your art all about a passionate subject?  Do you want to keep your passionate opinions and beliefs quiet and separate from business, or do you like the soap box approach based on who you are and what your passions are. It’s all very individualistic. Episode 063: Gaining Instagram Followers the Right Way, the pros and cons of paid Instagram followers.  Be patient and wait for the real deal and work it right. Are you new to Instagram or are you a seasoned Instagrammer?  If you are new to IG, then you most likely have already started searching for friends, fellow artists, celebs,  musicians, trends and more!  It's literally hashtag mania!  And when they say a picture is worth a thousand words, they aren't kidding! If you are seasoned, then this information will be of good use to you as well. Gaining followers takes time, unless you are impatient and want to spend good hard earned money to jump to the front of the line by way of "instant followers". There are plenty of ways to gain followers the fast way, however you are not gaining true followers, there are bogus accounts that exist that do NOTHING more than populate your IG page.  They will not comment, like, share or add any value to your IG account.  If IG decides they are going to do one of their clean ups and delete these fake accounts, then "boom" they are gone and you have lost hundreds or thousands of accounts from your page.   Be patient, gain your followers the organic and best way possible.  Comment, follow, like and share other Instagrammers and have fun doing it.  This podcast outlines the does and don'ts, pros and cons of getting the most from your IG followers, use the right hashtags and just have FUN! Greetings everyone!   I had the opportunity to attend Genesis 4 (aka G4) this weekend in San Jose for the G4 gaming competition this past. This event brought in gamers from all over the globe including Sweden, Japan, Canada, Germany, Mexico and thousands from across the USA. My son Ryan had not only been a gamer at past events, this time he was a vendor selling his own brand of tshirts through his business Game Over Customs as a vendor at this event. He also makes custom stickers, game controllers and other items. There were a several vendors at this event selling their own drawings, digital art, keychains, tshirts, buttons, designs badges etc. One thing that we noticed was that there were a lot of artists that were not connecting much with this audience, mainly becasue they were new to this style of selling. A frew of them had their own Etsy.com shops or Facebook shops, but not al all familiar with the face to face selling of this style of vendor event. When I got to Ryan's booth, I reconfigured their booth to be netter merchandised, created better visuals, risers, inventory, POS area and got the banner hung in a more prominent location. It's these small details that make the difference. From that point he was front and center to start getting more traffic and allowed customers to see his products better.  He was personalizing the custom gamer tags on the back of the shirt with his customer plotter and heat press. Ryan mentioned to a few of them that I was a professional artist that not only sold my art and products to the masses, but that I also had this free podcast to help artists like themselves. Some of them approached me to see what RockstarMentor.com was all about.  They were so glad to know that there was a resource, a friendly and approachable resource where they can learn how to achieve selling directly to the customer. There were some pretty well known gamers were sporting his awesome custom shirts; Mango  @C9Mang0, @TKbreezy @VS_NickRiddle @TYSK @TaiMai @yukun and more. See more images from the event here: https://twitter.com/GameOverCustoms If you are an Anime artists, digital artist, anime avatar creator, pop culture artsts etc, you will benefit from our podcast.  Rockstar Mentor is for ALL artists for all genres. Rockstar Mentor Show | Be an entrepreneur with your art business | Marketing brand strategies and interviews with Sonya Paz

Greetings friends and listeners, Sonya Paz here with the RockStar Mentor podcast and I want to wish each and everyone out there a fantastic happy new year. We are officially in 2017. I love it.  I feel optimistic and hopeful for an amazingly creative new year. I want you as an artist to be empowered and to really flourish and excel with your art business and I am so glad that you're here with me today.    Today we are going to talk about  goal setting and positive thinking.    As much as I am a big advocate for goalsetting at any time throughout the year and positive thinking 24/7 ... 365, I thought for many folks would like to start things on a clean slate at the beginning of the year, I believe everyone can pretty much relate to that, right!   I know this is the time of year when a lot of people of all careers, all areas of the world want to start the new year with resolutions and promises to themselves that from everything from losing weight to curbing any bad habits, to stop the procrastinating, to have better relationships with people and of course how to make your business flourish and thrive.    Throughout the past several months I really haven't given everybody a list of assignments to do, it's been pretty much motivational to get you in the right track, to make you more aware of what's going on out there in the art world but today I am going to give you a small assignment and don't worry my assignments are effective, however they're not going to kill you they're not going to make you make your brain fall out of your head and they're there to get you motivated and inspired. Mainly my assignments to you right now are going to be for you to reflect inside yourself and really dig down deep and perform a small task.    I'm going to give you a little bit of homework today, get a notebook, a notepad something that will be dedicated for you and your success as an artist. List five strong things that you want to accomplish this year - starting off with just the first quarter of 2017. Yes, I know we are looking at a lifetime of goals and ambitions, but let's just work for the next three months first.    The point of this short exercise is to give you some guidance in the journey of being a successful artist. Some of the things that you might consider are getting your social media better organized, perhaps you have a great online presence but you want to learn how to talk with your customers face-to-face better, or simply, you might be quite introverted and you want to learn how to step outside your comfort zone.    List five things that you would like to accomplish, and by writing these down you are step one into determining to make all of this happen. You are going to set yourself up for this commitment that you will need to really be committed fully.    One thing that I really want you to focus on is doable goals yet challenging. Challenge yourself, take something that you think might take longer to accomplish and have that as one of your goals. You might very well surprise yourself!   One thing that I start each year off of is writing down five goals for myself, I would love to say that I have completed all five of my goals, but I managed to successfully do four of my major goals last year for 2016, I have to admit that I set the bot the bar pretty high for myself and my goals are not just lightweight tasks. One of those goals was to write, orchestrate, arrange, and produce this entire podcast so I have to say that that in itself was enough for 70 tasks!   But seriously. Give yourself 5 goals that you would like to achieve in three months, write them down and be suSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/rockstarmentor)

This podcast is part II of the "Say bye bye to the Bah Humbug Part II", this segment of the podcast will focus on people (aka trolls) who like to anonymously tread in shallow waters.  People who like to hide behind keyboards and write unpleasant things to others, namely to artists.  NOW, no one like a bully or a coward and the reason that people do this to others is very confusing and bothersome to me, especially since I have many friends that have encountered this style of abuse.   I had promised to share with you a letter that I received a few years ago after I decided to close the formal gallery and moved back to my studio by appointment. The podcast will detail the contents of the letter, so be sure to tune in to get the juicy nitty gritty details. My choice to have a full retail gallery in the heart of Downtown Campbell was my choice, it was MY journey and MY experience. Sure there were highs and lows, but that's OK. To conclude, don't let others make you feel like you are not important, rise above it all and keep killing it with creation, be strong and determined. I know that it's hard to persevere when others are unpleasant, but for the sake of your art creation, your sanity and getting through it, let it go.  It's not worth trying to debate with someone that negative who is obviously lacking a few brain cells. Ep. 046 Get the winning hands with cards... credit cards.... Maximizing your sales with merchant services If you're not taking credit cards now you're creating a disservice for yourself! Hey everyone, Sonya Paz here with the Rockstar Mentor podcast and it is a bright and beautiful day out here with our California weather is bringing us fabulous sunny and warm weather! A couple of quick things that I want to talk about first of all is that due to the crazy holiday season I am going to consolidate the fan mail Friday Q&A to our regular episode that occurs every Tuesday, I just have such a crazy busy schedule in the studio and we are in full production with ornaments, jewelry, gifts and online orders right now that doing two episodes a week has proven to be a bit much at this time. We will revisit after the first of the 2017 year. The time is just swooshing on by and I cannot believe that we are already five weeks until Christmas or maybe it's 41 days something like that, but it is crazy the days are going by so fast that it's nutty! It didn't take long for the Art and wine's festival season to conclude before we started embarking on all of the holiday shows, craft shows, bead and jewelry shows you name it it's out there already and people are selling and people are buying! I will say that I have been in this business a long time, and I say that gracefully, a looooong time! I remember when getting a merchant account to take credit cards used to be a painful and agonizing process with all kinds of business references needed and personal references and paperwork up to Yazooo and then there was a point where some people didn't even take credit card so you had to have a business check, or get your items ordered via COD, (COD, somebody you don't even know what that is) it was when you had to have a purchase order for items, you ordered them with a wholesale minimum, the company you were ordering from didn't take credit cards, they only took certified check or money order, and then if all went well you would have your order shipped to you and you would have to pay the driver and intern UPS would turn around and pay the manufacturer, now if that doesn't sound like a lot of hassle, it certainly was. And that's how it was done back in the 70's, 80's, 90's. One thing I can say for sure is that taking credit cards now and excepting merchant payments and paying for items is far easier than it has been ever in all of my years in business. As of recently I have noticed that there were a couple of merchants at some of the craft and art shows that did not take credit cards, they took only cash or checks. And I know everyone has a reason for doing things and they are set in their ways or they are maybe have personal reasons for not taking credit cards. I cannot think of one person other than my parents or the older generation that actually still carries a checkbook around, I'll carry one or two checks in my wallet in case I have to have a check but I won't carry a Checkbook around, I don't know a lot of folks who still do this other than the older generation, however everyone carries around a credit card, it's easy to carry around the instantaneous ability to purchase something is quick and easy. Well, I say that unless you take credit cards you're probably eliminating a lot of sales, yes, I will say that, because it's true. But like I said maybe there's a personal reason that somebody doesn't want to take cards. A good friend of mine was still taking cash or checks and I asked her why she wouldn't take credit cards, she said she didn't like the fact that they took a percentage. Episode 045 Polishing up your art Episode 045 Polishing up your sales spiel!   Greetings friends and listeners, happy November to all of you and I am energized that this holiday season is approaching. Before you know it we will be in the midst of getting lots of orders, ornaments, jewelry, commissions finished with the crazy December deadlines but it's all good.  I am Sonya Paz,  your host with the Rockstar Mentor podcast.    First and foremost, not sure if you noticed but I was absent last week, a lot of things going on we are in the process of moving the editing studio and had some Family commitments and I decided to take a break off for one week.  But I am back and here we are. I am going to talk to you about one of my favorite subjects and that is polishing up your art spiel. This the season to be creative and his the season to make lots of sales.   This not only goes for your online communications, but this is very pertinent to the way that you communicate with customers if you were doing any holiday, Christmas shows, craft fairs, Studio sales, open studios etc.   Over the past summer I visited a few art and wine festival's that are very popular here in the Northern California area, I get to visit friends that I know who are doing the shows, and I also get to see what's new out there, check in with many people who I've known for years and it's always fun to talk shop.   While perusing the shows early one day before it got too hot in the day I happened to notice an artist who was in the process of setting up his booth and a couple approached him interested in his work. This gentleman not only looked annoyed but pretty much barked at the couple "I'm not set up yet, I'm still unpacking, come back later".  Well, needless to say the couple was quite taken back by the comment and it wasn't so much what he said it was how he said it, it was very unfriendly and certainly wasn't screaming "yes, come check out my stuff later."   I if I had known who this artist was a little better I would've went up to him and told him that he had just lost a sale, but being that I didn't know this person I chose to just observe from afar and make note for this episode.   Now, it goes without saying that this couple I am pretty positive did not come back, the sale was lost, in fact I would say that the sale was executed ... Game of Thrones style!   You don't have a second chance to make a good impression and you certainly don't have a second chance to rewind and take back things like this. I will tell you from my own personal experience I made some of the best sales while unpacking well getting my show ready for an event, as well as packing up a show. The possibilities are there and the possibilities are endless so don't squash on these valuable opportunities.     I recently had an artist write to me and tell me that she listens to my podcast on the way to doing her shows or on the way to exhibits, and of course as you know, podcasts are audio so you can download it to your device whether it's android or iPhone or iPad or what have you and pick up lots of great free valuable information. Today's episode is about how to prepare yourself and breathe for success this holiday season.    Ep. 041 Overwhelm Solutions for a Bustling and Profitable Holiday Season   If many of you artists, are like me, then you think procrastinating is a good thing in regards to being creative... however probably not the best thing when it comes to the countdown to the holiday season. This episode focuses on what you can do to help alleviate some of the stress associated with deadlines for this bustling holiday season.    Listen to how to be the best of your creative self and how to ask for help and delegate to make yourself and your staff successful.    I know for me I tend to want to do everything myself, but I have developed a trusting team of staff (that I actually like to call friends instead of employees), but they help me out greatly and I empower them to help me manage very important aspects of my art business.    You can do this too! Delegation trust not only builds a great staff but it also is part of the amazing relationship building that I keep telling you about. It's really important to and trust others with things to help you be successful.    So breathe, tune in and enjoy this highly informative episode of the RockstarMentor.com   For the full summary of these show notes visit me at http://rockstarmentor.com/blog Please visit our website to sign up to be on the front lines of amazing information and free downloads that I have prepared especially for you. http://rockstarmentor.com Visit me on Twitter: http://twitter.com/crushitmentor Visit me on Instagram: http://instagram.com/rockstarmentor To support via Patreon is greatly appreciated! https://www.patreon.com/rockstarmentor To learn more about me, my art and colorful product line, visit Sonya Paz through my artist website, http://SonyaPaz.com Thanks to "The Brush Guys" they can be located at http://thebrushguys.com they offer the best in all things brushes for all mediums and amazing specials on art supplies. Ep. 039 Take That Leap for Success... NO Permission Necessary Just do it! Greetings friends and listeners If you are now tuning into this episode then I just want to let you know that my name is Sonya Paz, I am a professional artist, entrepreneur, shameless self marketer, I have created my own product line and owned my own Galleries. In 2012 I decided to close my huge gallery that I had in downtown Campbell, CA and go back to the "studio by appointment" business model. I was a tad burned out on retail, but mostly every ounce of energy and time was put into the gallery and I was losing who I was not only as a person but as an artist, as a mother and as a daughter, a wife and friend. I wanted to take time to travel and to absorb and get back some of what I felt I had lost over the past years. I will say that I do not regret anything about having the gallery, it was phenomenal, it was a wild ride and the ultimate high that you cannot possibly imagine unless you've done it. But there is time that we need to take for ourselves. I decided to focus on the commission work that I was working on and take a good couple of years to regroup and reinvent and get back into the creative mode. At the end of 2014 I felt like I needed to get social again, I needed to be out there, meeting people, inspiring people, start to network and get back into the groove of things, on my terms of course. A couple of friends encourage me to start doing the wine and paint party circuit, I really never felt as though I would be the person to teach but this type of learning this type of teaching in the style of environment was not only fun, but inspiring and fulfilling on so many different levels. So I started VinoPaint.com I could teach different styles of artwork, to get people creating, bring out an inner artist within themselves they never knew they had. But it was also a calling for me that was amazing. I was able to use my public speaking skills, my humor, my love for music, my admiration for everything creative and it's been awesome. Many of the local folks who had visited the gallery were pleased to see that I was out and about, and doing something new and enjoying this new style of teaching. And believe it or not, people really wanted to learn how to create from a professional artist! By now you might be asking yourself "Is this podcast a self promotion for VinoPaint?".... well, it wasn't intended to be a giant commercial for myself or for my business, but when you own your own podcast and after three dozen plus episodes I think it's OK that I talk about it.... and shamelessly promote. LOL The point is is that I had to overcome certain fears, I had to break out of the comfort zone and move in a direction that I would never known if I had loved it or hated it unless I tried. If you are on the fence with trying something new take the leap, then go ahead and make that jump. Not everything is a breeze, especially if you're outlaying money then there is a specific commitment involved. You will never know unless you try. If you would like to learn how to boost more of your confidence with a coach, an artists who has done it all in this art industry, check out RockStar Mentor.com. Episode 034   Greetings friends and listeners, today is Fanmail Friday and I have a question from Sarita in Meridian, Idaho who asks, "Hi Sonya, I am in the process of getting my website finalized and I have given my images to my web person, she is telling me that I need to remove the watermarks from my images, but I remember from a previous podcast you said that watermarking the images is necessary, can you please explain this to me again in detail?   Greetings Sarita, and thank you so much, I know that so many web people want to make things simplistic and they feel that the watermark is going to compromise the aesthetic from the website..... Ummmm not true!   it's the same as if you were telloing them to not to allow them credit if they put their name at the bottom of the website. So, in my opinion, the answer is no, do not remove your watermark.    However, I will say that the watermark does need to be thought out and doesn't need to take up the whole entire span of your image, it also should not be blasted across the center of your image, often times this is a turn off to the consumer and it should be in a lighter transparent layer something that isn't over taking images but will let the average viewer who might stumble on your images in that big fast Internet Highway know who who created the work.   I also know that some web experts want to place high-resolution images spanning 1200 x 1200 pixels.  Eeeeek!!!  If you provide this size image, provide images that will benefit images of open spaces, images of your studio, photos of your exhibits with lots of people in it, a photo of you with your booth, a grouping of your artwork in a setting. But I do not recommend that you put one image 1200 pixels by 1200 pixels because then it can easily be "borrowed" from your website and utilized unfavorably without your permission.  Sad, but true.    I have provided art images on my site that are no more than 500 pixels wide, this will translate well and be nicely visible on tablet, laptop, smart phone etc. the whole point of putting photos on your site is so that people can see your work and anything larger than that it's going to take up unnecessary space and you want of course people to purchase prints of your work or other products that you have available.    If you keep the watermark modest on the lower section of the on the image, this way  you should be safe.    Sarita, I am excited that you are close to launching your website and would love it if you would send me your final link so we can check out your amazing art! I hope that you will send in questions that you have that you would like for me to answer on the air about any obstacles that you are encountering or any questions that you might have.    For the full summary of these show notes visit me at http://rockstarmentor.com/blog Please visit our website to sign up to be on the front lines of amazing information and free downloads that I have prepared especially for you. http://rockstarmentor.com Visit me on Twitter: http://twitter.com/crushitmentor Visit me on Instagram: http://instagram.com/rockstarmentor To learn more about me, my art and colorful product line, visit Sonya Paz through my artist website, http://SonyaPaz.com Thanks to "The Brush Guys" they can be located at

Today's episode focuses on how you can support your local artists by not only visiting them and supporting them at their shows, but to be sensitive of the time you spend with them in respect to their other guests. I know many of us who have had shows, will know that the time spent with a collector can be a profitable and rewarding experience, and as much as we love family and friends to visiting us at shows, it's critical that they understand that our time at the shows is not all glamour, it's a lot of work.  Now, I have been a fan of other people's art and have attended many exhibits and exhibitions and I want to support. I don't expect them to spend a lot of time talking with me but I do want them to know I'm there to support them. If there is a guestbook at the event I make sure to put my name in it and write something nice to let them know that I was there. If I do have the opportunity to see them, then I tell them briefly how I enjoyed  their show. But I also want them to know that I realize that they're busy and simply just want them to know that I wish them the best.  Sometimes when having an exhibit it's always good to have an extra support person there, almost as if they were a "handler". Someone that can keep you moving along if for some reason you get trapped into an in-depth conversation where you may not have an opportunity to break away.  Now I don't think that I'm being snarky saying this, but it is a reality. They can be  losing potential sales and relationship building with someone who may want to learn more and is ready to buy their work. Episode 029 What to expect if you attend an art critique.  Greetings everyone, I am Sonya Paz your professional artist, business person, entrepreneur and podcaster! I have been doing been in this art business a loooong time and today we are talking about art critiques, a quick insight on both ends of the spectrum, getting your work art critiqued and critiquing others artwork. You might ask, if I have I ever been part of the artist critique and have had my work reviewed by someone like this? Yes, I have volunteered my art to be part of a critique many many moons ago. It was an education experience from all levels. If you have an opportunity to be part of a critique where a local artist museum or gallery is hosting an artist critique it might be an interesting insight to go and get your work critiqued. If you choose not to go for yourself perhaps attend and just observe and just see what it is like. Or go with a friend who's an artist and sit in during the process if you don't feel that this is for you at this time. But I say go for it, jump in with both both feet, it's just opinion and insight, it's always good to get a perspectives of someone that's not emotionally attached to you or your work.  Early in my art career there was a local museum that was offering critiques for a very small fee, I believe it was $10. A well-known art curator had about a dozen artist attend the critique with their work (The work was a variety of paintings, watercolor, sculpture, 3-D, jewelry etc.) and he offered a very kind and positive critique. It was not his mission or intention to bash the art and it was not his mission to criticize, he didn't demean the Artists and it was in a group setting with their peers.  The entire critique lasted a couple of hours and he went through each person's artwork asked some questions about the work, valued questions like; "what it meant to you?", "what was your state of mind when creating it?", and "what was inspiring?" etc. He then gently deconstructed the work in a way that was positive and encouraging. I will admit that in the late 90s when my work was really finding it's voice with a cross of cubism and modern American pop art I felt somewhat intimidated by the critique because everyone's artwork that was being presented at this session was very serious, lifelike drawings, plein air painting's, still life's etc. there wasn't a lot of abstract works that was being presented was, at the time I remember feeling that the works that were being critiqued were “serious art". LOL A couple of years later there was another critique in downtown San Jose area and that I thought I would attend. With some other art friends of mine, and I don't want to say that I attended for fun but I attended just to see the process in a different light.  I'm not going to say that my art was ripped apart, torn up, chewed up and spit out at me but I did find it interesting that the person that was doing the critique didn't ask the questions that I had been asked a couple years earlier,  those questions being for me to describe what I was feeling while creating the work, where the idea, concept or inspiration derived from, instead the woman was quite vocal and or confusion about my work and when I opened up my portfolio she practically gasp out loud with I'm not quite sure if it was a gasp of horror, or a shock of the colors, but it certainly was a reaction and it was a process that I made sure I paid attention to. I was just going to enjoy the ride….

I received an email from Philip from Lake Tahoe and he asked a great question today,  he asks “Hey Sonya, I love your Podcasts and I really found the benefit of your free download of the  basic exhibitor tool kit . I wanted to ask if you have a preference of pro panels or the metal grids that are also an option for outdoor events.  Many thanks to Philip for his awesome question. For me there were times when I would have to set up my booth with by myself and I found a pro panels to have worked out very well for me.  I needed to have an option that was lightweight and very sturdy so that is why I gravitated toward Propanels and decided to invest in the pro panel system. I know that there are other systems out there that work well for for a canopy set up. You can also have a canopy and maybe four or five a frame with pegboard set up that you can paint black white or gray that may work well as well which might be more cost-effective, it really doesn't matter what you have as long as you can showcase your artwork very well and have room for people to view your work clothes and at a distance I don't I'm not an affiliate of pro panels so it's not like I'm trying to get extra bonus points for recommending them, I recommend them because I use them, they were sturdy lightweight and I really liked how they perform over the years with this process creating walls where I can hang my work.  You should definitely have something, whether it's metal grid's pro panels or a frames,  Don't use bungee cords or funky hangers to hang your work,  you don't have a second chance to make a first impression when it comes to how your work is presented.  If you were able to create even a pegboard system that you can hang off of the canopy and it doesn't compete with your artwork, as long as it's sturdy, portable and will work for you. Any time any of us are showcasing your work you have to come up with a system and a way to present your work in the most positive and engaging way possible, my best advice is to always plan ahead don't try to get all of this stuff within a week of doing a show prepare yourself and have a system ready that will rock 'n' roll and will enable you to fill a sense of pride  Thank you so much Phillip for asking is valued question today, I would love to see what you end up coming with and would love to showcase it on the RockStarMentor.com website, do please keep me posted! I hope that this fan mail Friday will help not only benefit fill up but will help you in any questions you might have had in regards to your booth set up at an outdoor show. This weeks episode is about has been asked by a few different people in a variety of different ways over the last several months. It is about consistency and pricing. One specific question came from a collector who said "I used to collect the work of a specific artist until I went to a recent show that they were in and noticed that their pricing was dramatically different from other pieces I have purchased from them, almost half as much. The same size pieces were going for about half the price than what I had purchased them for the same size. I am weary now of purchasing their art and do I say anything to them about it?" I'm going to get on my soapbox now and rant a bit. As someone, like myself who also collects original art, I think it's fair to say something if you have purchased artwork at a show and then see it on another show for about half the price. I am not certain of all of the details of who the artist is, what artwork they were purchasing, if the shows had a theme to them or not, but as someone who also collects artwork, I will tell you straight up right now that you will lose collectors if you still can't get your pricing aligned properly.  It sends the message that you're not organized, it lets others know that you haven't found yourself as an artist or your cheapening your work by extreme price points  I'll give you the fact that maybe a $10 or $20 fluctuation either way might be acceptable, but if the price difference is almost half, then you NEED to get it together. You need to value your work and make sure that you're consistent across the board, because as you gain collectors they will start following you and rule number one, if you start wavering on your pricing so dramatically you're doing not only a disservice to yourself, but you will lose valued collectors.  There are many facets to getting your art priced right, I have written an article that is on my website that talks about pricing your work.  Now, in defense of the artist, one artist asked me "what if I have a studio sale? can I discount works to an already collectors base? If you have a studio show and you are inviting your VIPs and collectors, yes, you can extend the sale as a thank you. If you were showing an exhibit of your work and it's part of the show, you best keep it consistent. I hope these questions help I hope this topic of pricing and consistency will help you move toward much success in selling your work.  If you are online I want to check more about me, your host, Sonya Paz with the RockStar Mentor podcast and visit us at RockStar Mentor.com I have lots of tools ideas past episodes blog and so much more on the website so make sure you check us out there.  If you like this podcast and  would like to subscribe please do, this way you will get episodes delivered to you automatically.  For the full summary of these show notes visit me at http://rockstarmentor.com/blog Please visit our website to sign up to be on the front lines of amazing information and free downloads that I have prepared especially for you. http://rockstarmentor.com Visit me on Twitter: http://twitter.com/crushitmentor Visit me on Instagram:

Episode 023 Print on Demand - expanding your art through products.  I will be addressing the all time burning question today that I often get asked because I have created my own successful product line and of course this is quite a journey and there are a lot of lessons to be learned in creating my own product line things that I may have done differently but certainly don't regret anything and because I have done this guy can guide you in the right direction on how you can get started with your own products It's no secret that I have created a very expansive product line from ceramics to textiles, watches, magnets, jewelry, clocks, household decor, wearable art and the list goes on. I guess I get asked all the time about so these products were developed and where do I have the manufactured.  Create something that is individual and will work with whatever substrate you're working on. Sometimes this means you have to create artwork to accommodate the size of what you're what product that you want to have your art placed on, and an easy way to achieve this also is create something that can be adjusted in size and you don't have to worry so much about the dimensions, for instance create more square pieces that you know will fit on more square products.  I have done this long enough to tell you that I have tried to fit specific artwork to accommodate a specific space and sometimes it doesn't always work out the way you wanted to work out.  Many print on-demand services have products that you can put your art on, the key factor is to have a really great photograph, color corrected and super high resolution of your work in order to properly police these items on the product.  I have had products manufactured overseas and I have developed products that we produce in house here in the studio. Unless you're in the digital design industry it can be a learning curve and trust me I have a digital art background and there was still somewhat of a learning curve because you have to deal with certain print profiles and a whole bunch of other stuff.  There are places like Zazzle.com and of course the long-standing Cafépress.com that will make products for you on a large variety of products from T-shirts to kids clothes coasters some textiles and the list goes on. And these are wonderful if you want to have something as a prototype or any small run, but they are certainly not designed with pricing structures that will allow you to wholesale those products.  They even have options on there that you can create your own mini store with products and the designing of the products on these websites are very easy,  even if you're not a graphic designer they have step-by-step design that form that makes it very easy.  I will be interviewing some ndustry professionals folks in product manufacturing businesses in an upcoming episode and I don't want you to stay tuned for that, it will be it will certainly be an education and eye-opener on how you can build a simple and effective product line Today is episode in the series of these podcasts are sponsored by the brush guys.com to have amazing deals on brushes and or home of the $2 brush. Today’s Fan mail Friday question is from Noah from New York. He writes in and asks, “I have been painting for a few years and recently have sold my work at some outdoor shows. I sold a painting the other day and the customer asked me if he can pick up the painting after I finish it and varnish it. I have never been asked this question before and was taken back by this because I don’t varnish my art and I never have. I am I supposed to be doing this on my canvases, I paint in acrylics waterbed paint. Thank you for your time."   I am so glad that Noah asked this question, I have had this conversation with several artists in the past and believe it or not, not all artists seal their work. I certainly wanted to address this valued question here on the podcast so that others can benefit from it as well.   This is a decision that is entirely up to the artist, unless you are working to achieve a specific high tech looks with heavy polyurethanes to lacquers. Use a varnish or sealer that is waterbed and will work well with other acrylic applications.   Using a sealer will also help with achieving a consistent smooth look. The point of preserving your work for years to come is essential for the art and your reputation as an artist and it will benefit more ways that one.   Always test a swatch on a piece of mat bored or heavy paper to see how well the mediums will reach or compliment your paints.   Reference:  Liquitex, http://liquitex.com Golden Brand Paints http://www.goldenpaints.com Nove Color Paints: http://www.novacolorpaint.com   Many thanks to Noah for this valued question today. I want to point out also that if you do not intend to varnish or protect your artwork, keep true to yourself. There is nothing that say that you have to do this, but as an artist that also collects others works, I highly recommend that you at the very least explore some of these finishes.   My Fan Mail Friday episodes are here every Friday to help benefit you as an artist and get your weekend started. Today’s Fan mail Friday question is from Cara from Ft Lauderale. She writes "Hi Sonya, I'm just getting started with my art business and I want to start applying to exhibits and shows. I don't know the first thing about writing a bio and would like to know what else do I need to put in there and what to include." Excellent question from Cara, thank you so much for writing and asking. Believe it or not a lot of people write a bio and have no idea what to put in there so they either put two less information or far too much information. Of course through my art career I have written have had several versions of my bio written and it certainly has evolved. What you need to really focus on is what are The essentials. 1), Influencers. Tell the reader who you are and what drives you as an artist.   2) Accomplishments, if you have exhibited in an exhibition or a group showing at a gallery or in an open studios format.  3) Public or published works note those as well, shout it out to the world! 4) Awards. if you have won awards for any your work, write it down and tell the story. People want to know what types of award you have been involved with, if you're a watercolor artist and have one something from your local watercolor Society or special group interest of ceramics and received an award for  5) Specific collector base. if you cater to a specific collector base, you can mention that as well. The point is to let folks know that you're out there in the community. Your artist bio is a growing document if you have a website this is great because you can change your bio up pretty easily. If you are going to print this to include with other documentation that you provide to your collectors or handout it shows realize that it will evolve and change and for you may want to consider smaller print runs so that you can keep your bio current.  Don’t forget to add your contact info, studio address (if applicable) website, phone number and social networking links. I am so glad that Cara asked this question, I do get this question asked often but certainly wanted to address this valued question here on the podcast so that others can benefit from it as well. Episode 015 "Get that video camera out of my face" that is what I would say anytime anyone with a video camera came around me. I was never comfortable being in the view of video camera. This fan mail Friday is touching on an observation one of my collectors had seen recently on one of my Facebook live videos that I had on my Sonya Paz gallery page. Randall who is a videographer out of the Los Angeles area as well as a collector of my work stumbled onto my Facebook live video on my art page and was stunned at what he saw. For several years he wanted to capture me in my studio and I was apprehensive each time he asked. This episode covers a bit of why I was apprehensive and how I really seem to now gravitate toward the strange medium of my video on Facebook for the whole world to see. In my excitement on covering this topic, I failed to read Randall's email to me on the air. So I will post it here: "Sonya I recently viewed your live video feed on Facebook and I was pleasantly surprised, shocked yes, but very pleasantly surprised. I know for several years when heading up to Northern California I wanted to capture you in your studio, and you were very honest about how you felt about being video taped. It looks like you're having a great time on Facebook live and you seem to be a natural at it, I think we need to do a Facebook live the next time I'm up in Norcal, I think it would be a blast! Keep up the great work" Randall, thank you again for your email! You have absolutely no idea how fun is medium is and how the spontaneity of the moment seems to really pull me in and I gravitate toward that. The thing I've mentioned is that this is live video feed and it's a "one take Jake" so it's more organic and I feel I can really be myself  because I don't have the painstaking task of having to rehearse the script or won't be able to see how I will interact until the video is done. The live feed is great because I can view myself doing the video therefore I feel that I'm actually more engaged with the audience. Not to mention that the audience can participate and give acknowledgments by way of likes and comments which only enhances the engagement and then I get to call out the viewer and they really  like that too. I apologize for not reading Randalls question over the air, my mistake (eeeekkkkkk!) and I will correct  those things in the future. But for now have a listen to the podcast, try something new, get on Facebook live, engage with your group or your collector base and rock 'n' roll! I'm not one that knows much about online gaming even though I have two sons who play different types of gaming and gaming tournaments, specifically this whole Pokémon Go movement. Apparently a public art project of a painted utility box that I painted with the "Art Box Project" in San Jose in 2013 made it to  one of the locations for Pokémon Go. I guess this is a big deal and aside from getting into the logistics about Pokémon. I've received a lot of emails comments and acknowledgment that the art box that I painted is referred to as "silly flowers painted box". But aside from getting into a whole discussion about Pokémon I wanted to touch on public art projects in general. There are public art projects all around the country, it where you can submit your work to be part of public art projects all around the United States, in your local vicinity, and so many other cities. What kind of public art are you doing and if so what are you doing? I would love to hear more  about this from you.  Write to me and share with me what you are doing?  For the full summary of these show notes visit me at http://rockstarmentor.com/blog Please visit our website to sign up to be on the front lines of amazing information and free downloads that I have prepared especially for you. http://rockstarmentor.com Visit me on Twitter: http://twitter.com/crushitmentor To learn more about me, my art and colorful product line, visit Sonya Paz through my artist website, http://SonyaPaz.com Thanks to "The Brush Guys" they can be located at http://thebrushguys.com they offer the best in all things brushes for all mediums and amazing specials on art   supplies. Episode 014- Fan Mail Friday An awesome question from Betsy from Detroit Michigan asks “How long do I wait to follow up with someone after the exhibition?  Same day, a week or when?” Great question and many thanks to Betsy from Detroit! There is no perfect science in the follow up, in my personal experience allow a good 24 buffer and each person is different and each circumstance is different. Send a friendly email, let them know that you remember them and that you are simply following up. Be sure to include in the email the picture of the works they are interested along with the size and the price.  Offer to have them view the work again in a less congested setting, or if they are local, offer to bring the piece by to see if it the art will work in their space. Email is good, post card is also an option as a great follow up. Give it some time, if they promise to get back to you and don’t, perhaps ping them in a week.  Be assertive but don’t be a stalker.  If they are indecisive then simply let them know that you are available and also let them know how long your show is hanging and/or when your next exhibit is. Brushing up on your customer experience or customer service skills is essential. I have seen many times where you get better customer service shopping online and you do when you're shopping inside a brick-and-mortar retail establishment - because you at the very least get a "Thank You" . This episode is touching on simple methods to brighten up your skills with customer interface and interaction This episode focuses on the way that you present yourself as not only an artist but as a business person and how you interface with the customer. Picture this as a big sandwich the top bun is your meet and greet, the bottom bun is thanking the customer for their purchase and all of the flavorful and substance between the bun is the main gradient, the flavors, sauces, spices of how you made that customer feel. Think of this as the first date and you were there to make the ultimate great impression, most importantly you want your potential collector to know trust and like you not only as an artist but as a person they can relate to. The formal approach is not bad, sometimes too casual does not allow you to be taken seriously. This is your time to shine. The conversation is a 2 way street, ask them about where they're from, are they local, are they traveling from out of town? Basic information also includes following up with customers and building your list. The fortune is in the follow up and personal thank you notes is a the ultimate win!   For the full summary of these show notes visit me at http://rockstarmentor.com/blog Please visit our website to sign up and be on the forefront of important information and free downloads that I have prepared. http://rockstarmentor.com I'm Tweeting! what do I use to create such amazing prints of my artwork? Today's question comes from Carolyn from Chicago, Illinois. Carolyn's asks "Sonya I've been a follower and collector of your art since 2003 and I love the vibrant use of your colors, and whenever I have purchased original art and prints I'm amazed at how your prints turn out with the colors so vivid and capturing your detail. Do you mind if I ask what type of printer you use and what kind of camera you've used to get your results?" First of all wow, thank you Carolyn for not only collecting my work but for listening into the podcast and asking this great question! I am a technogeek and it's no surprise to anyone that I hoard printers. I do, I love Epson printers and I happen to have around 7 in my possession presently to which 2 are longer working anymore….. HA! I have been photographing my art for several years and have honed in my skills are so that I don't have to go back and tweak too much of anything,  I have used a number of different cameras to photograph my work and we most of everything with this in the studio. I have master files of everything and from this master files we create templates for the different sizes of prints that we will be doing. We print up to 14 inch wide in house and anything outside of that I have a professional printer who will reproduce the larger formatted prints. I suggest for anybody who is new to printing in-house start off slowly, it is a commitment and there is a learning curve if you are not used to it. I have a digital imaging background so that made it easier for me, but some artists want to create and don't want to have to worry about being there own manufacturer. I would suggest find someone in your area who can take photos of your artwork and print them for you so that you could do the color checking. There are several online manufacturers that will create prints from your photos but if you don't have a quality masterfile, your prints will be jeopardized.  You can Google the different Epson printers that I have noted, most of these are now discontinued, however you may find something online that is refurbished that might be cost-effective solution for you. I know either artist use printers like Cannon, Kodak, HP and Brother but for me I am in Epson girl! I will say that you should ALWAYS photograph your work for documentation purposes and keep a database or spreadsheet to properly document your work, regardless if you are creating prints or products. Be sure to include the title, date created, size, medium, file name, location or other archival information you feel important.   So many thanks to Carolyn from Chicago who has written in and asked us this awesome technical question, I love questions like this where I can geek out and talk about the technical aspects of the art business!  I have been asked about printing images of artists work over the last couple of weeks, we will go into a more in-depth episode in the nest future to address more technical and specific details on this process. I hope that this question in my expertise in answering this question will bring some value to you. Pretty much everything in my life has been a goal and a passion and overcoming obstacles. Now as I had mentioned I'm not the tallest or the strongest by way of physical stature so trying to climb a 10 foot wall may appear hard and as much as I would try and I would practice if there were still challenges. However, I was determined to find a way that I could achieve these obstacles by using common sense and by using the areas of strength that were available to me.  Believing in myself and mentally preparing myself to overcome fears and obstacles was a huge game changer. Now, I know a lot of artists find a lot of obstacles off the bat automatically, it's pretty much a given, they're worried that their work is not going to be good enough they worried that people say terrible things about their work they worry about not being taken seriously as well as the obstacle of letting go of something that they’ve created and that they are passionate about and that their heart and soul is into it and now you're considering parting with the piece because you want to make a career out of your art business. It’s working on these fears that will empower you. Another example is when I started doing these podcasts, I knew it was audio and I knew that I would have to have my voice out there recorded for listening. And as much as I have done public speaking that never seem to bother me because I didn't have to “listen to myself” over and over. When  it comes to video I can truly say that I hate watching myself being videotaped, I don't like the fact that I rolled my eyes a lot, I don't like the fact that I get animated and I start looking as though I belong in a cartoon, because when I get a little nervous I tend to rattle on a little bit. I have been interviewed and have been videotaped and most of the time I don't even watch them more than halfway through because it's something in me that I get a terribly paralyzed with fear. (GAWD!!!) For me personally I gave myself a challenge, I've reflected upon myself at the end of 2015 to what can I do differently in 2016 that will truly take me out of my comfort zone. Actually doing this podcast and be recorded vs. being videotaped and having to be documented this way. It’s the technology of it, not my content…. Now, I will tell you that I know my stuff, I know this business and I'm pretty dang fearless… you give me a project to do artistically in my style with my tools in my environment and surroundings, and I will rock it and if you tell me that I can't do something I will tell you how I have I'm going to do it and then I will show you how I've completed it. It's Fan Mail Friday! We have a question from Janet in Bend, Oregon who writes: "HI Sonya, I am so excited that I discovered your podcast last week, I was referred to you from my friend Michael.  You mentioned about starting my own art group if I cannot seem to locate a group that has the artsy feel and vibe I am trying to achieve. What are the cost associated with this –any advice on this would be great. I love what you are doing – looking forward to more sessions and I am subscribing for sure. Thank you, Janet R. My response: Art groups are free or low cost  to do, you can organize these and meet at a local coffee shop or your own studio. Facebook is a great way to get your art group in your area, Start networking with other artists and get awareness by word of mouth, Facebook also offers private groups.
