In honor of Women’s History Month, I’ve invited a couple of my clients who just started their businesses, and made their first 1K and beyond within 3 months, to share their insights, mindset shifts and behind the scenes stories with you. Each of them is breaking barriers and making history right now - not just for themselves, but also for the whole entrepreneurship field as what’s possible as an Asian and woman of color. This week, I have the INCREDIBLE Kristy Ishii with us. Kristy is a life transitions coach & career consultant for both the US market and Japan. She’s a trauma-informed coach training at the Institute of Coaching Mastery and works with people who want to transform their lives both through inner work and outer work. She serves clients on mindset block awareness, forgiveness & acceptance, and supports clients in calling forward how to achieve aligned action through career and lifestyle transitions. In this episode you’ll hear about how Kristy was able to overcome all self doubt she had, to fully believe that she could do coaching full-time, what happened for her when she tested out all her limiting assumptions versus holding on to them (*hint* creating 1K+ client), and the biggest shifts that she got from coaching around making paid offers. The theme for this episode is around what Kristy and I coached on the most - which is making offers. Most people don’t make offers because they’re afraid their services isn’t valuable, they won’t help their clients get results and fear of rejection. Kristy and I talk about how to separate your self worth from your product worth, and how you can feel confident in charging for your services. Tara grew up on the beaches in Southern California. She loved the ocean very much. Often, it would be a real struggle to get her out of the water at sunset. Even when she moved to Costa Rica for a study abroad from her university, Tara's longing for the ocean was like a fire she couldn't put off. Every so often, she finds herself sitting with and listening to her surf instructor friends. However, surfing seems to be off her options. Then, she decided to just go for it and eventually, formed a lasting bond with the waves.Tara shares more of her story and how her supposedly, four months of study turned into 14 years of journey towards sustainable surf tourism. She also shares her motivation behind this project and provides a wider perspective around the impact of tourism on the environment and the local community. Tara also created a safe space for individuals to share their stories at Tarantula Surf, which is a platform designed to cater to freedom, authenticity and diversity. As the proverbs say, “We don't inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.” This conversation is indeed, an evidence that everything we do creates an impact and it's up to us to decide what kind of impact that might be.Episode Highlights02:56 The White Water Warrior06:51 When Surfing Gets Everything In Place10:10 Tourism: The Hitch for Locals15:20 SUSPIRO: Resisting an Unseen Invader19:50 A Sustainable Tourism Model23:40 Sustainable Practices27:24 Support SUSPIRO29:09 Tara's Sustainability Consulting and Empathic CoachingThis week we're taking off for Playa Hermosa in the Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica. My guest Tara Ruttenberg, moved from the US to Costa Rica for university course many, many years ago and never came back. Tara is a consultant in sustainable tourism. She's also a writer, a yoga teacher, a life coach, a bad ass surfer, and a PhD candidate.“You can think a little bit more outside the box and not just care about what kind of waves you're going to be scoring on that trip, but also about what your impact is.” –Tara RuttenbergIn our conversation, we get to know more about Tara's story, and are introduced to her latest project called SUSPIRO, which is also her PhD. SUSPIRO is a project whose goal is to find a method to create sustainable economic models for locals in surf destinations. It's a really stimulating conversation where we talk about the effects of surf tourism in countries such as Costa Rica, Sri Lanka, and Mexico, where a lot of expats have moved there and are unconsciously responsible for marginalizing that local populations, both economically and socially.Connect with Tara:WebsiteEmailInstagramFacebookResources Links:SUSPIRO GOFUNDME PAGEQuotes:23:51 “I don't think we need to sugarcoat the fact that international tourism is a huge problem- environmentally and socially. When she moved to Florida, Dellani Oakes had no idea the history was so rich and fascinating. Visiting St. Augustine for the first time, she felt the allure of the country's oldest city. She decided then to write a story based there. It wasn't until nearly 12 years later that 'Indian Summer' took its final form. Dellani is a happily married mother of 4, a substitute teacher, and a former English teacher. When she is not one of the above, she is an avid writer, spending every possible moment immersed in her other worlds. She has also written a series of futuristic romance novels, contemporary romances and short stories. In an interview with self-publishing site, Smashwords, Dellani, shared, "I've been telling stories since childhood. I started writing short stories in high school and plays in college. I first attempted novel writing in 1988, but I never finished it. Maybe one day. I took up writing as a serious vocation in 2002, when my youngest started kindergarten." Dellani added, "I had a nomadic childhood. My father was an English professor and we moved a lot. I lived in Tennessee, Ohio, Massachusetts, Texas, Nebraska and Mississippi before coming to Florida. It gave me a wonderful variety of settings and people to choose from in my writing. Under the Western Sky is set in Nebraska in 1976. 'The Ninja Tattoo' takes place in present-day Florida. 'Indian Summer' is set in Florida's past in 1739." http://youtu.be/wXFI-sGPBtE
