We all have a few scary moments in life that we'll never forget. You know what I mean – a time when something is happening, or about to happen, and you know that the outcome could be really bad, and it's happening so fast you don't even have time to react. It's almost like you're watching a movie, and just waiting to see how it's gonna end. One moment like that for me was several years ago, when we lived up north. Winters in Maine can be pretty brutal, and part of that is that sometimes the roads can be icy and dangerous for driving. I remember one day I was driving on a rural country road, just two lanes, and the weather conditions were not good. There was some snow, but I also knew that the road had patches of ice. So I was moving along pretty carefully. Then I saw coming my direction was a small pickup truck. But he had already hit a big icy section and he was coming downhill toward me. And he was just spinning in circles. This guy had absolutely no control, just doing 360s as he came down this hill in my direction. And there really was nothing I could do either. I just figured “Ok, here we go, this is gonna happen I guess”. I wasn't too concerned about getting injured because we weren't going at high speeds – I just knew that a collision was about to happen. But amazingly, as this truck finally reached me, he was somehow able to stay on his side of the road while he kept going in circles right past me. I watched in my rear view mirror as he eventually regained control, and we each went on our way. Just part of life when you live in a cold climate. My guest today is Marsha. She had a moment kind of like that once. She looked up and saw headlights coming her direction. But it wasn't a car coming at her. It was a plane. If you're in Monahans, Texas, go eat at Pappy's BBQ – 1901 S Stockton Avenue. It's a shame that two of the nicest people you can meet at the Leadville Trail 100 also happen to be the ones you want the least to meet. You see, Sandy and Mike Monahan are the race's cutoff queen and king. If you are pushing the time cutoffs at each aid station, they will do their best to move you through and on to the next one. But if you are too late getting there, they will kindly and gently deliver the news that your raceday has ended. You couldn't ask for better people to handle this difficult job, and that is what makes them an integral part of the Leadville Family. I've been there several times on both sides of the cutoff ledger, which may be why in the years I have volunteered, Sandy has sometimes recruited me to assist her. I got to know them particularly well in 2015, when I was the so-called Last Ass Up the Pass, the DFL, or dead f*@king last finisher. Due to coming back from surgery for a ruptured quad that prior fall and some other unique circumstances, from the time I arrived at Twin Lakes inbound, I was within four minutes of the cutoff at every aid station the rest of the way. A very stressful position to be in, but the Monahans kept me moving along so that I did make it to the finish with only two minutes to spare, in 29:58! Once again this year, at Outward Bound and Half Pipe, there were Mike and Sandy pushing me along as I teetered ahead of those cutoffs. But the couple has meant a lot more to the race, going all the way back to the early days when Mike was a racer, and Sandy helped race co-founder Merilee computerize the records from the old handwritten ones prior to then. Cole Chlouber devoted an entire chapter to them in his new book, Grit, Guts, and Determination. Mike and Sandy share some great stories that I am sure you will enjoy in this episode, recorded on the eve of this year's race, which they generously agreed to do, get this, on their 50th wedding anniversary!Bill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram and Threads @stahlor and @coachstahlYouTube We Are Superman Podcast

Andy and Brendan recap an eventful week in golf, but first there are some questions about the winning caddie now all of a sudden getting a trophy or award and how that is judged. This is a cause to talk about the massive weekend for Jay Monahans, one the winning caddie of the U.S. Women's Open and the other returning from his leave of absence. They discuss Allisen Corpuz's breakthrough win at that event, praising her and Charley Hull's Sunday rounds. There is time dedicated to Annika's sketchy drop on Friday night. They also discuss Pebble's place as a steward of the game, and whether its presentation and the USGA setup this week are a good example of that. There is great delight in the Sepptic Tank rumbling his way to a John Deere win, and what it means for Sqairz coming to the Ryder Cup. News closes it out with the announcement that Monahan is coming back to be Commissioner next week, and that Randall Stephenson has resigned his spot on the PGA Tour Policy Board. They ponder a motive for that and what it means in the elbowing to get the framework settled or scuttled.

I think the lot size was about 1000 cars. Each HS would claim its own section of the lot on Monday nights so they knew where to park and meet their friends. The rest of the community knew to stay away on those nights as music from the cars would blare out of big speakers mounted on top of the cars (you can see that in my film) and nobody could hear the movie. Next, a family get-together near Monahans, Texas is interrupted by some extra-terrestrials! Next, After the break Cam and Kyle discuss some strange out of place objects that have been discovered. It can be hard to resist the allure of a mysterious object found in a context that doesn't seem to make rational sense, suggesting that it's proof of time travelers, lost civilizations, or alien visitors. You don't have to be a conspiracy theorist or a cryptozoologist to marvel at a bizarre computer-like device that dates back to Ancient Greece, or a 2,000-year-old battery found outside Baghdad in the 1930s. So-called “Out of Place Artifacts,” also known as OOPArts, are often said to “baffle scientists,” and conspiracy theorists suggest that scientific efforts to identify their origin and purpose willfully ignore potentially controversial explanations outside the mainstream. After all, it's true enough that science is constantly evolving, and we still don't have the answers to many of life's mysteries. All of this and more on this installment of Expanded Perspectives! On April 23, 1936, Roy Kelton Orbison was born in Vernon, Texas. For y'all that don't have the map of Texas tattooed on your brain, Vernon is up in Wilbarger County near the Red River, about 50 miles west of Wichita Falls. One of my favorite history professors, Hunt Tooley, was from Vernon too. Not sure when his birthday is.  Whether Dr. Tooley was an Orbison fan or not is not known, but I can pretty confidently say that Mr. Orbison was one of the great singers and songwriters to hail from Texas and he was and still is loved by thousands of folks. One thing I should point out is that I always thought Mr. Orbison was blind. He was famous for always having dark sunglasses on. As it turns out, he was not blind, but he did have very, very, very bad eyesight. He grew up in Wink, Texas, even more west than Vernon. Wink is way out west in Winkler County near Monahans and Pecos, about a hundred miles southeast of Carlsbad. He got his first guitar when he was six and since then music became a central part of his life and Roy started his first band, the Wink Westerners, there when he was attending Wink High School. After high school, Roy attended North Texas State College in Denton, Texas for a while. That's just north of Dallas and Fort Worth in Denton County and on I-35. North Texas State College is now the University of North Texas and they have a world famous music program there. He then went to Odessa Junior College. In Odessa, the Wink Westerners changed their name to the Teen Kings. He, and they, had their first hit after he left college in 1956. The song is Ooby Dooby and it was released by none other than the legendary Sun Records. You know Sun Records. They were the company that also released music by Elvis Presley, Charlie Rich, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash, to name a few. Kind of like an early version of 301 Productions with its current lineup of great Texas musicians. Roy went on to have several hits. Twenty-two Orbison singles reached the Billboard Top 40 between 1960 and 1966. He wrote or co-wrote almost all of his Top 10 Hits: "Only the Lonely" in 1960, "Running Scared" in 1961, "Crying" 1961, "In Dreams" 1963, and "Oh, Pretty Woman" (1964). If you haven't heard one of these or any Roy Orbison songs then you need to crawl out of the rock you've been under and get a little culture. Your ears will thank you. Because of his greatness, Orbison was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum. He also was recognized with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award along with five actual Grammy Awards. He co-founded the great supergroup, Traveling Wilburys in 1988 with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Jeff Lynne. Sadly, Orbison died of a heart attack in December 1988 at age 52, a month before the release of his song "You Got It." It was his first hit to reach the US & UK Top 10 in nearly 25 years. So here's to the memory of Roy Orbison, born on April 23, 1936. The Texas History Lessons Theme song, Walking Through History, was written and recorded by Derrick McClendon.

If you don't know Teresa Burnett, you probably don't live in Monahans, TX or any surrounding community. She was raised in Artesia, NM where she grew up with her parents, Joe and Karen Hodges, and three younger siblings, Scott, Kelly, and Amy. After graduating Artesia High School, she attended South Plains in Levelland, TX where she met and married Johnny Burnett. Shortly after marrying Johnny, they moved to Monahans where she raised her two children, Kandace and JW, and enjoys every moment with her four grandchildren, Caitlyne, Thomas, Rian, and Kate. Teresa has many amazing qualities, but three stand out more than others: passion, selflessness, and energy. Teresa loves the town of Monahans and its citizens, and if you give her the time, she will bend your ear about Monahans and the many things it has to offer! Passion is described as an emotion that brings you satisfaction, so much that you get lost in what you do. Teresa may have been raised in Artesia, NM, however there is no doubt that the blood in her veins is green. The amount of time she spends thinking, planning, and organizing things in town describes her passion for her community, a trait that you won't find in many people. This trait is shown through the countless boards on which she serves, charity organizations in which she helps raise money, the commitment she has to the Monahans Lions Club, and the love that she has for her family. There isn't a day that goes by that she doesn't talk about something that her kids, or grandkids have accomplished, or what she gets to go see them do. The same goes for the town of Monahans and its citizens. Her passion does not go unnoticed when you hear people talk about her and the many things she has done, including the numerous awards she has been given, with one of the highest honors being the “Woman of Distinction” award she received from the Girl Scouts of the Desert Southwest. Selflessness is described as someone that is more concerned with the needs and wishes of someone other than themselves. This character trait defines Teresa more than any because of the time and effort she puts into everything she does. This is not reflected only at the Monahans Chamber of Commerce, but her friends and family as well. As Mom and Grammy she puts all of her needs and wants aside to fulfill the needs, wants and wishes of her children and grandchildren. Teresa gives to her community just like she gives to her family, this is because she considers her community to be her family. She has given to every fundraiser, blessing boxes, pie auction, and many other things behind the scenes that many people don't even know about. If you need help with anything she will go to the ends of the earth to help you get it, or if she has it, she will give it to you without question. Energy is described as having strength to be able to sustain physical or mental activity. Many people look at children and say, “I wish I had about ½ the energy that kid has!” Teresa has the energy of three children put together! We see Teresa running around town going from one place to the other without fail. Her energy can often be contagious if you are feeling up to it! The Broadband project is one of the highest honors that reflects her energy. Teresa spent countless hours and resources getting the money and the plans for the Broadband project, which she was honored with an award from the state of Texas! If you know Teresa, you know it is very hard to keep up with her, she doesn't know how to slow down. When she completes everything with the chamber, she still has the energy to play with her grandchildren, keep them on the weekend, or attend their events at school. Teresa's passion, selflessness, and energy make her who she is. There isn't another person around that can do what she does and love it as much as she does. Many people have a passion for their work, or their family, but Teresa has the qualities to fulfill both work and family life. Without Te

Escuchar audio

When I say “niche” what’s your first thought? What I hear from my students in my Website Marketing Lab + Web Designer Academy courses are things like: “Thank goodness because I don’t want to be everything to everyone.” “I have too many interests, I don’t want to pick just one thing or one kind of person.” “What if I pick the wrong thing?!” For some people, it’s a relief.  Others feel really constricted when they hear that narrowing down your interests and focusing on one thing is the key to growing a successful business. Others never get started because they’re afraid to pick the wrong thing, or making the choice seems overwhelming. But what if instead of blindly doing all the things, or never starting because you were worried you made the wrong choice, you just tried a bunch of different things and were just really open to noticing what’s getting traction and following that path? That’s what today’s guest, Jessica Serna of the niche travel blog MyCurlyAdventures did. MyCurlyAdventures is a travel brand that inspires Texans to "travel the world" in their own state and find magic in their own backyard. Jessica and I talk about: Her journey from starting a general lifestyle blog to monetizing a niche travel blog. How her family reacted when she quit her day job to blog full time. How she lands sponsorship opportunities. Ways Jessica grew her following organically (and what didn’t work). The most important component of a successful blog. A day in the life of a travel blogger (pre-global pandemic). Jessica’s best advice for you if you’re struggling to monetize your blog. The one belief Jessica had to change about herself to get where she is today. Travel Blogging During a Global Pandemic Jessica and I recorded this interview in December 2019, and at the time of production in April of 2020, much of the country is shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I was really curious to know how Jessica, as a travel blogger who can’t travel, has adapted during the pandemic, so I reached out to her to find out. Here’s what she said: “As someone who focuses on travel, the transition has been something new and challenging to face. The best thing I can do is look at it as a challenge to overcome. I'm currently recycling old photos on Instagram as well as incorporating new content around fun at home activities, travel from home activities, and challenges like the #yogawinechallenge that connects people through something fun while supporting local businesses. Since I have extra free time from not traveling/shooting/editing new content, I am focusing on extra educational opportunities like the free courses and conferences that have gone online, creating content on other platforms like TikTok to increase brand awareness, and creating more blog content as I know people are going to be excited to look up activities and travel once this is over.” And if you wanna learn more about using TikTok as a blogger, don’t ask me because I have no clue, but Jessica wrote a great blog post all about “3 Ways You’re Already Sabotaging Yourself on TikTok.” My favorite quotes from Jessica: “When you niche down, you suddenly have a focus.” “It's hard to distinguish yourself from everyone else who also serves everybody.” “Even if things didn't go my way at this point...I'm still happy for everything I've done and I still provide value and I've learned so many incredible skills.” “Providing a solution that's not readily available is going to cause people to talk about you for you.” Resources Mentioned in This Episode Jessica’s blogging tips 3 Ways Your Sabotaging Yourself on TikTok Jessica’s Bio: Jessica is the Blogger of MyCurlyAdventures, a travel brand that inspires Texans to "travel the world" in their own state. Through her approach she has been able to inspire local wanderlust and help people travel more by looking nearby.
