What if the key to transforming your school culture is as simple as celebration and storytelling? In this energetic episode of Aspire to Lead, Josh Tovar, veteran principal and host of the Para #Ganas Podcast, joins me to share how his relentless positivity, powerful use of social media, and commitment to daily recognition have redefined leadership on his campus. We dive into practical ways administrators can build a culture of belonging, why telling your school's story matters, and how leaders can maintain joy and longevity in a demanding profession. Whether you're feeling the weight of burnout or looking to bring fresh energy to your school community, Josh brings the passion and purpose to reignite your why. About Josh Tovar: Josh Tovar, a proud son of Virginia and Jesus Tovar, was born in Cd. Juarez, Mexico, and immigrated with his family to El Paso, Texas in the late 70s. After challenging years in high school, he joined the US Marine Corps as an 0811 artilleryman. His military service allowed him to serve his country while attending UTEP, where he earned a degree in History and a Minor in Education. As a public educator, Josh has worked at 13 schools, from elementary to university level. He holds a Masters in School Counseling and Administration from Sul Ross State University, as well as a Masters in History from UTEP. Currently, he serves as the Principal at Memorial Pathway Academy in Garland ISD, Texas. Throughout his career, Josh has harnessed the power of social media to promote positive student achievements and enhance school culture. His commitment to “connections before content” aligns with Ryan Scott's philosophy, recognizing the importance of meeting students where they are through platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter (now X), Periscope, and Snapchat. Under his leadership, Socorro High School saw significant improvements, including an increase in the graduation rate and state distinctions. Josh's understanding of social media's impact underscores its value in education and community engagement. Creating a Pre-habilitation Program with Dr. Davis McAlister - Pt 1FAKTR Podcast Episode 57Featuring: Davis McAlister, DCEPISODE SUMMARYIn today's episode, we're going to explore a fascinating topic that has gained significant attention in recent years. Today's training is titled: "Creating a Pre-habilitation Program with Dr. Davis McAlister." Whether you're an athlete, a fitness enthusiast, or someone preparing to go under the knife, pre-habilitation is a proactive approach that can help optimize your physical and mental well-being before an event or sport. This subject is one that really hits home for me...as I sit here prepping to leave for a "world series" baseball tournament with my 9 year old and his team. Even at such a young age, we are constantly monitoring our kids to make sure they are getting proper rest, nutrition, hydration so that they can perform at their best and reach their full potential as an athlete at every stage as they grow. I'm fortunate to have a husband that's well-versed in athletic performance and recovery, but for most parents, that's simply not the case. So what do they do?In the world of sports medicine, we talk so much about how to treat injuries after they occur, but you don't hear a lot about how to prevent them in the first place. And while we can't 100% always prevent injuries in athletes, what we can do is better prepare our athletic patients for competition by implementing a pre-habilitation program that is customized to the unique needs of their sport and current level of fitness.About our Speaker:Our instructor today for this two-episode series is Dr. Davis McAlister is a Clinic Faculty Doctor for the Parker University Dallas Wellness Clinic. Dr. McAlister earned his Doctor of Chiropractic from Parker University in 2003 and has been in practice for 16 years. One of the challenges for spaceports is attracting new business to be able to sustain operations. At Spaceport America, that is the job of Dr. Francisco Pallares, the newly-appointed Director of Business Development. Dr. Pallares joined the New Mexico Spaceport Authority from Sul Ross State University and was the former Deputy Director for Economic Development at the City of Las Cruces prior to accepting his new position. Spaceport America is probably best known as the home of Virgin Galactic, which is poised to resume crewed flights as early as May 25. But the spaceport has other clients and functions as well, and attracting new business is critical to the facility's ongoing operations. Built for Attracting New Business Spaceport America was the first commercial spaceport in the world. It is an FAA-licensed launch complex, situated on 18,000 acres adjacent to the U.S. Army White Sands Missile Range in southern New Mexico, has a rocket-friendly environment of 6,000 square miles of restricted airspace, low population density, a 12,000-foot by 200-foot runway, and vertical launch complexes, so there is plenty of room for expansion. On the podcast, Tom Patton talks with Dr. Pallares about how the NMSA goes about marketing the facility to potential clients, what kinds of new business they are looking to secure, and why they are important to the overall success of Spaceport America. The vision for the NMSA is for Spaceport America to become a premier multi-modal Spaceport for point-to-point space transportation, aerospace operations, research, development, and testing in support of our Nation's commercial, civil, and national security space sectors. "I would not see it as something far fetched that we can start thinking about Spaceport America as having that value added, that additional production, into how can we deliver things across the world in two hours," Dr. Pallares said.

Whether we realize it or not, we are always telling stories. On a first date or job interview, at a sales presentation or therapy appointment, with family or friends, we are constantly narrating events and interpreting emotions and actions. In this compelling book, storyteller extraordinaire Matthew Dicks presents wonderfully straightforward and engaging tips and techniques for constructing, telling, and polishing stories that will hold the attention of your audience (no matter how big or small). He shows that anyone can learn to be an appealing storyteller, that everyone has something “storyworthy” to express, and, perhaps most important, that the act of creating and telling a tale is a powerful way of understanding and enhancing your own life.Dave's Affiliate Link - Support our show by clicking the link belowUS Audible LinkCanadian Audible LinkUK Audible LinkSupport the show!...

The Borderlands Research Institute – at Alpine's Sul Ross State University – was founded in 2007, with a mission to empower land managers to conserve the region's natural resources. In the Trans-Pecos, that means private landowners. National and state parks here are treasures. But what residents and visitors alike cherish about this part of Texas – its unbroken vistas and star-filled night skies, its “primitive” and wild qualities – is tied to the presence of large, and largely undeveloped, ranches. The Borderlands Research Institute studies the region's wildlife. But it also works to provide tools to keep working ranches intact, and to preserve and restore features of those landscapes that are central to the Big Bend's natural heritage.

They're a maligned group of creatures, and not entirely without reason. Ticks, fleas, lice and chigger mites fasten themselves to a host to feed – on blood, or, in some cases, dead skin, hair or feathers. In the process, they can be an irritant, and worse: they're second only to mosquitoes as vectors of disease. You might think you could do without them, but there's no gainsaying their efficiency. For many Big Bend National Park regulars, it's an essential stop after a day of desert adventuring. This panel focuses on questions surrounding the influence of race and ethnicity on the imposition of capital punishment. The Supreme Court struck down unitary standardless capital punishment statutes in the early 1970s. Only a few years later the Court upheld two forms of bifurcated, more structured death penalty statutes relying in part on an assumption that the narrowing required by such statutes would eliminate the influence of racial bias. None of the cases considered the possibility of racial bias against any group other than African Americans. This panel examines the evidence that racial and ethnic bias continues to influence the imposition of the death penalty under modern statutes. Lester Buckley - Horsetrainer, Clinician, Breeder Lester Buckley was not a trainer I was familiar with. Listener Robin Kane has been helping out getting guests for the show and she is hosting a clinic with Lester Buckley in Willits, Ca. at Berry Creek Ranch, August 18 - 20. It's great to learn from every trainer, and I wanted to find out Lester's story. We got a hold of Lester via Skype while he was waiting on a load of hay to arrive. Lester lives in Kentucky and, boy, does he have a story to tell. Lester worked on the King and Parker ranches. One is in Texas, the other in Hawaii. Both are very large cattle operations. Lester gained a great deal of experience from riding on these to ranches and he talks about it on the show. Lester attributes a lot of his early experience to riding horses at the ranch of Delwin Burch, cutting horse trainer and breeder. The experience he gained there led him to learn more from Ray Hunt. After earning a degree in equine science from Sul Ross State University in Texas he began working and training horses. Lester also competed in cutting and captured the Reserve World Champion APHA Open Superstakes. Wanting to learn more about classical horsemanship and precision movement, Lester Buckley turned to the German Equestrian School where he learned from some of the top trainers in Europe. On 1st August 2016, Texas became the first big American state to allow students aged over 21 to carry concealed handguns on campus. Ian Peddie explores the impact of the new law. This change is seen by many as a litmus test and, despite a few smaller states already having similar laws, where Texas goes America often follows. As with all American gun debates the issue is divisive, with many seeing this moment as pivotal in framing the nation's political and cultural relationship with weapons. Most educators in Texas oppose the legislation, Texas Senate Bill 11 (SB11). They fear an impact on teaching, where contentious topics such as religion and philosophy may now be avoided. But after notorious shootings at Virginia Tech, Columbine and the University of Texas, some students welcome the ability to defend themselves. British born Assistant Professor Ian Peddie has lived and worked in the USA for over 25 years. SB11 will change the context under which he lives and works and it's in that knowledge that he explores the impact of the new campus carry laws. We follow Ian into class at Sul Ross State University for the first day of the new law's introduction. On campus Ian meets students, faculty, and the police to gauge the mood of these new times. Later, Ian hears from protestors for and against the new law at the huge University of Texas in Austin. In a noisy atmosphere, the arguments are good natured but passionate. Throughout the programme Ian examines the fears, claims and discussions being held across universities, the state, and the nation. It will be illegal for lecturers to ask students if they are carrying weapons but it remains to be seen how that 'knowing but not knowing' might affect the class. C.M. Mayo interviews Mary Bones, curator of the exhibit "The Lost Colony: Texas Regionalist Paintings," in the Museum of the Big Bend, Sul Ross State University, Alpine, Texas. The Lost Colony refers to the summer art colony at Sul Ross which began in 1932 and ended somewhat mysteriously in 1950. Alpine is 30 minutes northeast of Marfa-- right next door. Of the region, as Michael Duty writes in the introduction to the exhibit's catalog, "It... has long called to artists who have been captivated by its natural beauty, its history, and its people. In recent times, the area has also drawn the attention of writers and reporters who have written numerous articles touting the area's prominence as something of a center, albeit a far flung one, for contemporary art. Those articles focus primarily on Marfa and the influence that minimalist sculptor Donald Judd has had on the town..." Later, Duty adds, that Judd "was certainly not the first artist to be so captivated". Mary Bones explains the inspiration for the exhibit, and shares the stories about and friendships of some of the painters, in particular Texan Julius Woeltz and his teacher Xavier González, a native of Spain, both of whom made trips to Mexico City to study the Mexican muralists, including Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco.
