Starting Strength Coaches Robert Santana and Trent Jones introduce the concept of intermediate and advanced training, and what to expect as you navigate the vast waters of programming therein. Most importantly, as you move further down the road of training advancement, the more carefully you must manage your training time, recovery, and outside-the-gym factors to continue making progress. PR's no longer occur in a linear fashion, and training results become unpredictable. Welcome to intermediate and advanced programming!
Few lifters reach advanced programming, because it requires consistency over a long period of time. Life too often interferes, whether it be injury, illness, vacation, or significant stressors. The road to advanced programming requires putting the work in as a novice and intermediate, adding weight first every 48-72 hours and slowly the SRA cycle lengthens and complexity goes up. This is accomplished through MED changes to continue to progress strength adaptations. GET STARTED with one-on-one online coaching FOR FREE! Popularized by Crossfit - You may think "As many reps as possible" (AMRAP) and "every minute on the minute" (EMOM) are only tools for the box. Wrong. The crossfit culture did much to popularize these constructs, but much like the 5 by 5, 3 sets of 10, and "300 hundred" workouts -- they're simply program design tools that can be powerfully used in the right hands. Programming helps entry-level computer science students develop their computational thinking skills by applying the basic steps in algorithmic problem solving and abstraction. Students apply modern software design techniques to strategize and communicate solutions and then develop a program that embodies their solutions. Throughout the course, students will increase their abstraction skills by analyzing complex problems and decomposing them into smaller more manageable problems and by so doing gain not only an appreciation of elegant solutions but also experience the thrill of obtaining them. Students will store objects in a data structure and then manipulate them, explore virtual worlds with robots, and fashion creatures of their own design while learning basic programming and algorithmic thinking skills. Programming is designed to fulfill the prerequisite for students who intend to pursue Advanced Placement Computer Science A. Prerequisite for Programming: Geometry or Honors Geometry. UC approved. Advanced Programming helps students develop their computational thinking skills by applying the basic steps in algorithmic problem-solving and abstraction. Students apply software design techniques to strategize and communicate solutions and then develop a program that embodies their solutions. Students learn to use techniques such as inheritance, methods and recursion to break complex problems down into smaller, more manageable sub-problems. Students not only gain an appreciation of elegant solutions but also experience the thrill of obtaining them. Using one or more modern programming languages, students explore virtual worlds (Karel worlds, GridWorld and gameboards) while learning object-oriented programming skills such as creating classes, designing and implementing methods, and exploring inheritance. Students expand their programming skills by applying techniques like recursion to solve an adventure puzzle or game. Advanced Programming is a fast-paced course and is a prerequisite for the student who has an intense interest in computer science and intends to follow up this course with Advanced Placement Computer Science with Data Structures (i.e., data structures such as linked lists, stacks, queues, priority queues, trees, and maps). At completion, successful students are qualified for either AP Computer Science or AP Computer Science with Data Structures. Prerequisite for Advanced Programming: Geometry or Honors Geometry with A- or better. UC approved. Interview with: Ms. Peregrino Produced by: Arushi Saxena
Matt and Scott have touched on advanced programming a few times during the show -- most notably with Andy Baker's approach to advanced programming in episode #104 -- and today they walk through their own philosophy. Advanced athletes, loosely defined, have progressed to the point where they can no longer make workout to workout, or week to week progress. Though the word "advanced" conjures an image of very strong, heavy lifters for many people, advanced trainees can vary drastically. Older women tend to become advanced trainees very quickly, especially on the upper body lifts. Likewise, Eddie Hall is an advanced athlete. Given the range of possibilities, programming for an advanced lifter is highly specific to the individual and his or her goals. Nevertheless, we can outline a general path through the levels of training advancement and the programs -- or more accurately, models or templates -- we use at each level. A novice will obviously start with the novice linear progression, with few exceptions. From there, Matt and Scott typically take trainees through: Texas Method and/or Heavy, Light, Medium (HLM) 4-day Split Block Training Daily Undulating Periodization (DUP) ...in that order. In the novice LP, we drive intensity; volume and frequency do not change. Starting with HLM, we begin to "wave" or cycle volume and intensity, also known as periodization. Do you feel that during recent years, people have become lazy when it comes to training and are looking more for how little training they can do compared to how much they can do? 3. What are signs to look after that would indicate that you are not recovering optimally and practically how do you adjust the volume? 4. Is muscle soreness a good indicator of how effective your workouts are and if so, how much is too much? 5. For hypertrophy training, what are your general recommendations for number of exercises per muscle group, sets per muscle group, frequency, reps and intensity? 6. In regards to programming, do you recommend scheduled deloads or only taking deloads when you need them? 7. What are your general recommendations outside the gym to maximize recovery?
Life Unsettled is a podcast hosted by Thomas O’Grady in a world where life is unsettled. How do you set yourself up for years to come (and start today) ? Until recently, the years between 45 and 65 years of age were ‘net savings years’, those years where income was more than expenses and people saved for retirement. Now, companies are replacing older workers. Meanwhile, while the net savings years are ripped apart, we’re all living much longer. So, how are people going to refocus their plans. Instead of retiring around 65 and living into their 70’s, people are losing jobs earlier and living into their late 80’s or 90’s. Solutions to this come from a variety of economic areas, entrepreneurs, financial people, home businesses and secondary income. The past is over. We can benefit by our experiences, but the past is behind us don’t dwell on it. The future is a dream, but all life is in the present, i.e. ‘Life Starts Now!’ The key question we answer in this episode is... What do you do if you hit 50 and feel you have wasted a lot of time? Thomas F. O’Grady received his PhD in Mathematical and Statistical Economics from the University of California at Berkeley. Since the age of 12 he’s been interested in entrepreneurial activities. He rose to the top in Soviet intelligence, broke Soviet codes 3 times; extended Nobel Laureate Daniel McFadden’s work at GM Research labs; as head of Chase Automotive Division reached profitability the chairman and president insisted was not possible; to international recognition in his international consulting firm; a top trainer in Advanced Programming and Database Development, wrote Database Developer’s Guide to Microsoft SQL Server (7); completely redirected corporate initiatives into customer focus. Besides hard work, he credits his success to constant independent learning and states that he learns from each person he meets. Head over to www.AYAlpha.com for more.
Has anyone ever told you "You will never amount to much, let alone go to college"? Could you imagine a straight A student being told such a thing? Well, Thomas O'Grady was told that several times by teachers and counselors early in his life. That could have completely devastated Thomas to the point that he would actually accept those poor and greatly miscalculated opinions. In today's story, you will see, that's not what happen at all. https://menofabundance.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Thomas-Ogrady2.jpg ()Thomas F.
