The fall of the Assad Regime - Dr. Azzam Tamimi by Radio Islam
The events in Gaza, the horrific slaughter of over 20,000 Gazans remains a deep wound all people of conscience have had to contend with over the past two months. The callous way with which the lives of young innocents can be so openly calculated and traded is shocking yet predictable in equal measure. Much of what has happened is premised on a set of collective myths the west has attempted to perpetuate about Israel and its intentions. A compliant media and a political class that have provided a thin veneer of acceptability to Israel's murderous rampage has all but shattered the myth that the west holds the moral high ground.Today we want to explore the myths that surround the current crisis. To help us understand the situation better we invite back onto the show Dr Azzam Tamimi who is a Palestinian British academic, author of Hamas the unwritten chapter.Let me remind all viewers that to help us continue to engage critical thought at this time, Please consider becoming a Patron. https://www.patreon.com/TheThinkingMuslimYou can also support The Thinking Muslim through a one-time donation: https://www.thinkingmuslim.com/DonateListen to the audio version of the podcast:Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7vXiAjVFnhNI3T9Gkw636aApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-thinking-muslim/id1471798762Sign up to Muhammad Jalal's newsletter: https://jalalayn.substack.comPurchase our Thinking Muslim mug: https://www.thinkingmuslim.com/merchFind us on:Patron. https://www.patreon.com/TheThinkingMuslimTwitter: https://twitter.com/thinking_muslimFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/The-Thinking-Muslim-Podcast-105790781361490Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thinkingmuslimpodcast/Telegram: https://t.me/thinkingmuslimBlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/thinkingmuslim.bsky.socialHost: https://twitter.com/jalalaynWebsite Archive: https://www.thinkingmuslim.com Hosted on Acast. Send us a textIn this conversation, Dr. Pierre Azzam discusses the intersection of mental health and professional coaching, particularly focusing on the experiences of fathers. He highlights the stigma surrounding mental health for men and the importance of understanding postpartum depression in fathers. The conversation emphasizes the need for compassionate communication and support for men experiencing mental health challenges, especially during the transition to fatherhood. We tackle the sensitive subject of postpartum depression in men, shattering the misconceptions that it only affects women. Men may manifest this condition through anger, isolation, or even numbness, and we need to increase awareness and support for them. The discussion wraps up by redefining resilience—not as a single trait but as a set of attributes that include courage, agency, and purpose. By modeling these for children and understanding the role of connection in mental health, we strive to promote a healthier, more inclusive approach to emotional well-being for fathers and families alike.Follow BraverMan and Dr. Azzam's work:https://www.bravermancoaching.com/Follow him on Instagram: @braver.manListen to similar podcast episodes:The science of happinessThe power of community for dadsEmpowering dads to express emotionsHow my grandpa taught me resilience Get your FREE 40-page well-being workbook:https://tremendous-hustler-7333.ck.page/reflectiveparentstarterkitJoin our membership, The Reflective Parent Club to learn how to manage your emotions and model this for your child. Analysing one year of genocide in Gaza - Dr. Azzam Tamimi by Radio Islam
On Florida International University Week: What happens when treatment options for cancer diagnoses run out? Diana Azzam, assistant professor in the department of environmental health sciences, looks into taking the guesswork out of this process. Diana Azzam, PhD, is an Assistant Professor at Florida International University. She has a Masters in Biochemistry from the American […]
Diana Azzam, PhD joined us on OsteoBites to discuss her lab's work on functional precision medicine for the treatment of pediatric and adult cancers. This presentation describes the foundational principles of functional precision medicine as applied to pediatric cancers and how major technological improvements as well as an explosive broadening of the cancer pharmacopeia has enabled the bridging of genomics with functional drug testing as clinical decision support tools to impact patient care.Diana Azzam, PhD, is an Assistant Professor and Research Director of the Center for Advancing Personalized Cancer Treatments at Florida International University. She has a Masters in Biochemistry from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon and a PhD in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology from the University of Miami, Florida. Her lab focuses on implementing functional precision medicine (FPM) approaches in adult and pediatric cancer patients that have run out of treatment options. Working with local hospitals including Nicklaus Children's Hospital and Cleveland Clinic Florida, her lab delivers individualized treatment plans based on a patient's cancer genomic profile and ex vivo drug response. She is currently engaged in two clinical studies to assess feasibility and clinical utility of FPM in relapsed/refractory patients with childhood cancer (ClinicalTrials.gov registration: NCT05857969) and adult cancer (ClinicalTrials.gov registration: NCT06024603). Dr. Azzam is working on setting up the first CLIA-certified lab in the State of Florida dedicated for functional cancer drug testing. Her goal is to launch large-scale prospective multi-center randomized clinical trials to better assess efficacy of FPM approaches in the treatment of refractory/relapsed cancers. In parallel, she is working on utilizing FPM as a tool to reduce health disparities in childhood cancer patients from minority populations. She is also integrating a novel machine learning approach to identify specific biomarkers among minority populations that can be targeted using FDA-approved drugs. Her lab also investigates cancer stem cells and how they may result from chronic environmental exposures to toxic metals such as arsenic. After a short presentation on this research, she will take questions from attendees. Share your questions in advance with us at Christina@MIBAgents.org.
Until last week, all the talk in the west was that of a developing ceasefire agreement for Gaza. That talk is now about a regional conflict. The lead negotiator, Ismail Haniyah, May Allah have mercy on him and accord to him the status of shahadah, was assassinated in an audacious attack in Tehran. This follows the death of a high-profile commander, Fuad Shukr, in the southern suburbs of Beirut. There are now fears that the conflict will escalate and more directly involve Iran. Already, Hasan Nasrallah, leader of Hezbollah, has talked of revenge, and so have the Iranians. To help us navigate this evolving crisis, I am pleased to have Dr Azzam Tamimi back on our show. A political analyst and expert in the region and author on a well researched book on the group Hamas. He joins us today online from Jordan,It must be made clear that this show is an analytical show and in no way represents an acceptance of the tactics and methods of any organisation discussed. It is our editorial decision to engage in a conversation about the current events as an exercise in informing our audience. Zeina Azzam, a Palestinian American who is poet laureate of Alexandria, writes longingly about her ancestral home in Palestine while celebrating her American identity, often peppering her English poetry with Arabic. Azzam, 68, came to the U.S. at the age of 10 after living in Homs, Syria and Beirut. Her parents fled their home in Haifa in 1948 when Zionist paramilitary forces drove more than 750,000 Palestinians from their homes to establish the Israeli state. The Zionists were largely European Jews who themselves suffered through centuries of displacement, antisemitism, and genocide. This mass displacement and dispossession of Palestinians is called Al Nakba, or The Catastrophe, and ignited a refugee crisis that's lasted decades. Today, Israeli settlements continue to displace Palestinians in the West Bank. This history has fueled both Israel and Hamas to conduct violent strikes and retaliations. Next month, VCIJ at WHRO will profile an Israeli-American. Azzam has made a colorful and happy home in Alexandria, decorated with cultural emblems from the Arab World, fig trees and jasmine plants. Her poem, “Write My Name,” has gone viral with its vivid description of children surviving in war-torn Gaza. Azzam read the poem before the United Nations Palestinian Rights Committee, and the verse has been translated into multiple languages. Speaking independently, not as the Poet Laureate of Alexandria, she shared stories about her life as a child of refugees in America, Al Nakba, the Israeli-Hamas War and her hope for the future.
This was the fifth and final session in a series of Public Conversations that Just World Ed presented in May 2024, on the theme of "Understanding Hamas and Why That Matters." The series as a whole was presented by JWE President Helena Cobban and board member Rami G. Khouri. Our guest in this episode was Dr. Azzam Tamimi, who's the editor-in-chief of the London-based Al Hiwar ("Dialogue") TV channel. He's a specialist on issues related to Islamic political thought, Islamic movements, and Middle Eastern (or West Asian) politics; and a distinguished author of several well-received books on these topics. The book on Hamas that Dr. Azzam published in 2007 came out in the USA with the intriguing title of Hamas: a History from Within. In this session in our series, Helena and Rami were joined on the "interviewing panel" by three other JWE board members: Zoharah Simmons, Nora Barrows-Friedman, and Zoharah Simmons. You can learn much more about this project and access the multimedia records of this session and all the others, at this Online Learning Hub on our website.Support the Show.
There is a certain epidemic that's strangling men's mental and emotional health. But since it's sneakier for men than it is for women, many mental health clinicians don't even know how to spot the signs. I'm referring to depression, isolation, and a lack of connection with other men. Men are lonelier than perhaps ever before. But we experience depressive symptoms in a more subtle way than women—and this further exacerbates our mental health. That's why I invited one of the most knowledgeable people on the planet about this topic onto today's episode in Pierre Azzam. Pierre is a physician and professional coach with over a decade of experience in neuroscience and mental health—including battling lifelong depression himself. Through his clinical work, Pierre recognized that the mental health industry as a whole is terribly unaware of men's mental health problems. Since then, he's founded Braver Man (and then Braver Collective) to address these issues men face in an effective manner. In today's episode, Pierre and I discuss… Why depressive symptoms show up differently for men than women How postpartum depression also affects new fathers The exact amount of time it takes to rewire your brain and free yourself from depression The 3 biggest threats men face to their overall mental and emotional wellbeing And more, including… Does your fear stop you from doing things that would enhance your life? Here's what Pierre recommends to conquer this fear (6:10) How to feel more comfortable with being vulnerable and acknowledging your emotions (even if you got bullied for this as a child) (13:48) Why the postpartum period can cause intense mental health risks for not only mothers, but fathers too (22:56) The major hormonal changes men go through after becoming fathers—that almost no new father realizes (25:43) How judging yourself morphs into toxic shame that causes more angry outbursts with your loved ones (31:13) Why the most common depressive symptoms for men are commonly missed (even by mental health clinicians) (31:58) This book reveals all the various ways men cover up their depression (37:04) Why practicing gratitude when you notice depressive symptoms is a massive step forward (even if it doesn't feel huge in the moment) (51:13) The exact amount of time it takes to rewire your brain's neuroplasticity to free yourself from depression (56:36) Why shared experience between other men can save your mental health (and even your life) (1:05:22) The 3 biggest threats almost all men face to their overall mental and emotional wellbeing (1:12:42) Listen now! A compliant media and a political class that have provided a thin veneer of acceptability to Israel's murderous rampage has all but shattered the myth that the west holds the moral high ground. Today forensically explore the myths that surround the current crisis. To help us understand the situation better we have back onto the show Dr Azzam Tamimi who is a Palestinian British academic, author of Hamas the unwritten chapter.Join our Patreon to get access to exclusive monthly Zoom calls: https://www.patreon.com/TheThinkingMuslimYou can also support The Thinking Muslim through a one-time donation: https://www.thinkingmuslim.com/DonateSign up to Muhammad Jalal's newsletter: https://jalalayn.substack.comPurchase our Thinking Muslim mug: https://www.thinkingmuslim.com/merch Find us on:Twitter: https://twitter.com/thinking_muslimFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/The-Thinking-Muslim-Podcast-105790781361490Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thinkingmuslimpodcast/Telegram: https://t.me/thinkingmuslim Host: https://twitter.com/jalalaynWebsite Archive: https://www.thinkingmuslim.com#thethinkingmuslimpodcast episode127 Hosted on Acast. Featured Musician: Nadim Azzam The Video: [After THE JUMP: The things said.] --------------------- 1. Ohio State Preview: Offense starts at the top Let's talk football! Ohio State's offense has taken a step back from nuclear, but they can explode with a couple of 1st round receivers, including the first WR off the board in April, and Treyveon Henderson, who can turn a missed tackle into a 57-yard touchdown at a moment's notice. Stover has been a much bigger part of their passing game, but Marvin Harrison Jr. and Emeka Egbuka are the stars there—Julian Fleming is another super blue chip who hasn't met his profile, and Xavier is Their center is Not Good so if Michigan can get them in long downs they should be able to get pressure up the middle and dominate the interior. They want to run Stretch and Counter; Michigan has the players to limit their gap runs but their zone runs are going to be difficult to stop with those light fronts. We'll see some interesting blitzes to try to win more of those back. 2. Ohio State Preview: Defense starts at 28:18 They've been much improved, and ain't played nobody (just like us). Notre Dame was able to push around their front, which doesn't have a 300-pound DT and might not have their most explosive backfield transgressor available. Their DEs have improved from last year but are not the top-3 overall hellbeasts they were projected to be as recruits—more like heavies who are difficult to dislodge: JTT = Mike Morris. Do not block with Tight Ends. Their LBs haven't been great, Seth thinks they will blitz a lot (like 2018) though they haven't much this year because that's a better use for them than having them sit back and read. Secondary is much improved despite losing Lathan Ransom for the season; Sonny Styles plays the Tight End-locked "Bandit" role in his stead while Jordan Hancock is an excellent "Nickel Safety" (Sainristil role) and Josh Proctor is back as a 6th year guy to be a solid free safety. They are not blitzing those safeties as much, preferring to sit back and prevent big plays, which they are EXCELLENT at. But Michigan might be able to go back to the 2021 approach. 3. Basketball in the Bahamas starts at 1 hour precisely. A loss to Memphis and a win vs Stanford set up tonight's battle for 5th place (really tied for 3rd but the order of your losses matters) with Texas Tech. Surprised to find this team can score in buckets but can't play defense. They can't have Reed out there in the last 2 minutes because he can't hit a free throw, and then they get off-balance if Nkamhoua has to take a breather. Tray Jackson has not been good thus far. Can't autobench Dug—he only gets 2 fouls per 40 and the offense can't operate without him. They need another point and they need a wing, and that's on admissions because they had transfers who wanted to come both years. 4. Maryland After Review starts at 1:10:36 Defensively it was the same game we've been playing every week, where the opponent has some stuff prepared (in this case it was the old RPO that Locksley and Gattis ran at Bama) and Michigan is practicing their base defense for Ohio State. The defensive line could be the best in program history, with Mason Graham playing like an All-American and Kenneth Grant turning into a monster, but that takes weird extrapolation because they're only on the field for 50% of the snaps. Secondary played like butt against the first good passing offense they faced, which is not a good sign for this weekend. Johnson got beat twice, Wallace looked like he needed to be pulled, and it's a bit late to be falling back on Sainristil outside and McBurrows in the slot, but that's the answer if Wallace can't stay with Egbuka. Bad day for the safeties—do not like Rod Moore missing tackles given what's coming up. Offensive, it was a terrible game for JJ, who wasn't seeing downfield shots that were drawn up for him. We play whack-a-take with the excuses and some are good: JJ didn't practice as much this week after being injured, he lost Roman Wilson who's the guy he'd normally be going to in those situations, and Maryland surprised him with some shifts after the snap. Can't blame the wind. Really didn't like the gameplan: you run 13 times then put out a passing offense to pass—there's no subterfuge there! Why can't this team run play-action when they are great at play-action? WHY? There's no answer. About the Featured Musician: NADIM AZZAM This year we are partnering with The Blind Pig for bumper music, since that's where I've seen most of the bands I've been pushing anyways. And now that we're at Ohio State week I have a reveal for you all: The man choosing the music all this time has been Nadim Azzam, who in addition to helping out the Pig is a rising star in the Detroit-Ann Arbor music scene himself. The Ann Arbor-based singer, rapper, and songwriter is soulful, witty, and technical, kind of like a blog you know. Azzam's new album Dreams For The Future is out now! The history of Palestinian liberation movements is paved with setbacks, betrayals and bitter rivalries. What began as an attempt to unify the resistance against Israeli occupation has over time been undermined by regional and global political interests, ideological differences and disagreements over the justification, and use, of guerilla tactics.Today the question of who represents Palestinian interests is hotly contested, with Hamas and Fatah vying for control, and a wave of dissatisfied young factions on the rise in Gaza and the West Bank. This week on The Big Picture podcast, we speak with British-Palestinian academic and political activist Dr Azzam Tamimi. In the light of the ongoing violence in Gaza and Israel, and the devastating toll on civilian life, Dr Tamimi explains how these movements began, and why another Palestinian uprising is inevitable. We'd love to hear your thoughts on this episode, and any guests you'd like us to have on our show. Active and fun are rarely the first words associated with medical education, but today's Raise the Line guest, Dr. Amin Azzam, contends learners get the most value when they can engage with their education rather than passively receive knowledge. As Azzam relates to host Hillary Acer, the vice president of Strategic Operations at Osmosis, he remembers first seeing the power of active learning while observing a class of med students as a psychiatry resident. “I sat behind a one-way mirror and watched these students leading their own small-group learning and it was just palpably infectious how excited they were to learn medicine.” In the ensuing years, Azzam has happily been utilizing and developing active learning strategies as a professor at three Bay Area universities and in his role as Faculty Engagement Coordinator at Osmosis, one of many key roles he has played as a longtime team member. One of his most impactful creative strokes was creating the first medical school course dedicated to improving the quality of health information on Wikipedia, both providing a unique learning experience and improving health content that has been viewed 88 million times by people around the world. Speaking of global impact, he's also been instrumental in Osmosis initiatives to facilitate learning by medical students in war-torn Syria and refugees seeking medical care. Check out this lively and fascinating look at learner-centric education and the power of providing opportunities for students to do social good while learning. Born in Palestine in 1941, Abdallah Azzam became associated with the Muslim Brotherhood as an adult refugee in Jordan. Then, in his twenties and thirties, he moved between Amman, Cairo, and Jeddah, gaining religious qualifications and joining the Islamist opposition to Israel and Arab leftist movements alike. But it was only with the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan that Azzam found his calling: in calling others to participate in the Afghan jihad. In the 1980s, he set up an international infrastructure of both persuading overseas Muslims to join the Afghan jihad then practically enabling them to participate. As both rhetorician and logistician, propagandist and organizer, Azzam acted as both the architect of the transnational jihadism that grew out of the earlier national activism of the Muslim Brotherhood. Among his many recruits and colleagues was a man who would later become far better-known—Osama bin Laden. But it was Azzam who set in motion the doctrinal and organizational developments that enabled many other competing jihadist groups to emerge in the decades after his assassination in 1989. Nile Green talks to Thomas Hegghammer, author of The Caravan: Abdallah Azzam and the Rise of Global Jihad (Cambridge University Press, 2020).
