Alison Knowles, Emotional Therapist, joins me today to discuss ‘it's not the what, it's the why'. Alison tells us that assumptions often arise when we focus solely on behaviour, leading to a lack of understanding. “Actually getting to the root of what's going on rather than focusing on the bit that isn't going to change.” Alison Knowles Alison emphasises that all behaviour serves a purpose, but merely focusing on the behaviour itself won't lead to real change. Instead, it's essential to understand why individuals engage in certain behaviours. This approach shifts our focus from symptoms to the underlying emotions and motivations that drive those actions. She pointed out that children often resort to negative behaviours to gain attention, especially if they feel overlooked when they are behaving well. It's crucial for parents and caregivers to recognise this pattern and provide attention and validation in positive ways. Listen to this discussion to find out the importance of understanding emotional motivations behind behaviours and the necessity for effective communication and supportive parenting. How often do you ask children what they think about something instead of simply telling them your opinion based on your own experiences? Often adults give answers based on their model of the world and views which aren't necessarily right. In today's podcast, Alison Knowles, Emotional Therapist, joins Dale to discuss ‘Ask don't tell'. Alison tells us that by asking WHAT? and HOW?, you can transform your conversations with children. These simple questions not only build their confidence but also show them that you genuinely care about their thoughts. Encouraging them to problem-solve fosters independence and resilience. Alison emphasises that children often hold the keys to understanding life's complexities. Sometimes, it's far more impactful to invite their opinions rather than overwhelm them with adult explanations. Join us as we explore real-life examples of how empowering children to voice their thoughts can lead to positive outcomes. “Just by asking rather than telling, you're actually encouraging that conversation so that you can move through situations in a more positive, empowering way.” Alison Knowles Listen now to discover how to enhance your communication with the children in your life. We have become victims to the “norm” and we doubt our self-worth based on external benchmarks such as houses, cars, grades, clothes. Parenting is around your child doing better than the next or behaving the way they do and not necessarily celebrating their uniqueness. Alison Knowles returns today to discuss ‘Looking and trusting inside rather than looking for solutions externally'. Alison explores the reasons why we aren't trusting our judgement and why we're basing our sense of self on others' achievements. Asking for advice is healthy, but the problem arises when you're constantly seeking validation, rather than trusting our ability to evaluate the information and decide what's right for us. During the discussion we delve into: The deep-seated desire to belong The impact of media Why you should trust your gut Feeling judged The habit of mind reading and making assumptions The pressure of conforming to societal norms of success You need to listen to yourself Being brave enough to back ourselves Listen to this empowering discussion and learn how to trust your inner voice! Let's begin by acknowledging a fundamental truth: there are no bad children. Each child exhibits behaviours as a means of survival within their unique environment. In the case of foster or adopted children, many have endured profoundly traumatic pasts, resulting in complex behavioural issues. However, at their core, they are children who, like any other child, simply need to feel loved, safe, and valued. In this week's episode, Alison Knowles joins Dale to discuss ‘Parenting foster/adopted children'. We explore the specific challenges facing foster or adoption families including; transitions, attachment, the importance of establishing boundaries, and effectively dealing with challenging behaviours. Alison brings her wealth of expertise as an Emotional Therapist and real-life examples. Each child's journey is unique, therefore it's crucial that no assumptions are made. Alison highlights that a lot of the focus is on the foster or adopted child, however, there needs to be more support for the parents. These families need extensive guidance and resources to navigate the complexities of their roles and empower these parents to enable them to provide the best possible care. "You've got to try and find a way to reframe the fact that there isn't that biological bond, but there's a more powerful, beautiful one. This is quite magical; they found you." Sasha Stiles writes poetry with and as machines. We first encountered her work as a direct, powerful rejoinder to the allegation that AI-generated work is cold, unfeeling, or lifeless. Her chapter in Choreomata underlines the technicity implicit in language and in poetics, positioning technology not as a thing one applies to language but instead as a mode of knowing inextricable from and in kinship with language. A few references from the text:First, Stile's beautiful work TECHNELEGY, which boasts an endorsement from Ray Kurzweil on its front cover. The audio version of the poem “Completion” from this volume completes the episode of the podcast, one of Marek's favs. STRONG recco!Stiles references Alison Knowles' The House of Dust as an influential inflection point in early computerized poetry.Stiles is BINA48's poetry mentor, who is famous for inducing moments of heartbreaking discursive introspection, for example -- by articulating a beautiful moment in the video for Jay-Z's 4:44.Jacques Derrida's Plato's Pharmacy and Villem Flusser's Communicology: Mutations in Human Relations? are solid mid-century interrogations of the historical determinations and formulations of writing that flow naturally from this conversation.Stiles is incredibly prolific — follow her work via @sashastiles on X & IG.
Have you ever experienced fears or phobias? Common ones like spiders, birds, flying, and snakes can trigger fear and panic. Interestingly, these fears are not innate; they are often derived from personal experiences or learned from others, typically during childhood. A regular voice on the podcast, Alison Knowles, returns to discuss ‘How to Stop Your Limiting Belief Limiting You'. Alison tells us how our inner child hijacks us and makes decisions for us as an adult. Many individuals find themselves not pursuing the path they truly desire due to the influence of their inner child. Just as we wouldn't trust our 7-year-old selves with our bank accounts, why should we allow the feelings and opinions we had as a child to dictate our choices as adults? “Has your inner child limited who you could be or more importantly, who you wish or want to be?” Alison Knowles In this episode, Alison guides us in breaking down our limiting beliefs and understanding the thought processes behind them. By doing so, we can prevent these beliefs from constraining us. Alison believes that this realisation can liberate individuals, allowing them to actively engage in life instead of passively watching it pass them by. From the moment we are born, none of us have fears or phobias, we don't have any beliefs about how the world works, they are shaped by our reality – the world in which we are brought up in by our parents/carers. As we grow, our unique life experiences and the emotions we attach to certain situations or behaviours begin to define us. “We need to recognise that whatever emotion is in control at any given time, will steer and direct how we view the world and how we react to it.” Alison Knowles A regular guest on the SENDcast, Alison Knowles, brings her expertise as an Emotional Therapist to discuss ‘Being Hijacked by your Emotions' today. Alison tells us how emotions can block our ability to reason, think positively and our life direction is dictated by which emotion has the steering wheel. Emotions are part of us all, and by listening to this episode, you will gain valuable insights into how to harness and navigate the power of your emotions. By learning to manage our emotions rather than allowing them to control us, we gain the ability to chart our own course and regain control over our lives. Liked what you heard in today's podcast? Why do we dread starting a new job? Why do we not like going to the in-laws for Christmas? Why do we not look forward to Monday morning? As humans, we tend to approach new events or situations with caution or even negativity. This is because our brains have a natural tendency to protect us from uncertainty and potential harm. Alison Knowles, Emotional Therapist, joins Dale in this episode to discuss ‘How our brains project our past'. Alison explains that if there is a gap in our knowledge or experience, our brain fills that gap by either deleting, distorting, or generalising information to create a sense of control and reduce anxiety. “You're more likely to remember when something went wrong, because when it's going well, that wasn't a threat or a danger to you.” Alison Knowles Knowledge is power. Understanding how your brain works can empower you to approach new situations with a more open and optimistic mindset. So, the next time you find yourself hesitating or feeling anxious about a new opportunity, remember that your brain's protective mechanism is at play, and you have the power to choose how you respond. Having a goal can often feel like you're standing at the foot of the mountain looking up to the peak, wondering how on earth you're going to get there. It can feel daunting, impossible and a struggle to get there, with many people not getting past the first step. This week Alison Knowles, Emotional Therapist, joins Dale to discuss ‘Goal setting – how to make dreams a reality'. Alison tells us that goals are merely dreams until you take that first step to achieving them. Alison breaks down goal setting and highlights the importance of doing it for the right reasons – internal, emotionally driven reasons that are more likely to make you happy. External goals, such as wanting to work in London in a big office, you're not actually doing it for you – as often it's to make a point or prove people wrong. “If you set a goal that isn't really internal, those steps are much harder, because your heart's not really in it. You're not really doing it for the reasons that really matter. You don't need a big office to run a very successful company, you need a big office for everybody to see you're successful.” Alison Knowles Listen to hear how you can make your dreams a reality and help children achieve theirs. In Fluxus Forms: Scores, Multiples, and the Eternal Network (U Chicago Press, 2020), Natilee Harren captures the magnetic energy of Fluxus activities and collaborations that emerged at the intersections of art, music, performance, and literature. Reacting against an elitist art world enthralled by modernist aesthetics, Fluxus encouraged playfulness, chance, irreverence, and viewer participation. The diverse collective—including George Brecht, Robert Filliou, Dick Higgins, Alison Knowles, George Maciunas, Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, Benjamin Patterson, Takako Saito, Mieko Shiomi, Ben Vautier, and Robert Watts—embraced humble objects and everyday gestures as critical means of finding freedom and excitement beyond traditional forms of art-making. While today the Fluxus collective is recognized for its radical neo-avant-garde works of performance, publishing, and relational art and its experimental, interdisciplinary approach, it was not taken seriously in its own time. The book offers insight into the nature of art in the 1960s as it traces the international development of the collective's unique intermedia works—including event scores and Fluxbox multiples—that irreversibly expanded the boundaries of contemporary art. Today's iMMERSE podcast is even more unusual than many of the others. I interviewed Elke and Peter Schumann in February of 2020 in their Glover, Vermont home along with Jay Walbert, the archivist for my Archive in nearby Barton, Vermont. The octagenarian Schumanns immigrated from Germany to New York in 1961 and have led the Bread and Puppet Theater since 1963. In this podcast, they share their history and artistic politics and bread. As Peter says here: We went around and gave them pieces of bread to eat and found they were a better audience when they were chewing – we liked them better…" In the beginning of our chat, Peter turns to Elke and says, "When I don't remember something, you will". "I will" she says. This happy conversation is ever so dear to me because Elke passed away on August 1, 2021. I first met Peter in New York in the 1970s through public events maker, Karin Bacon. I first came to the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont in 1968 to work with Fluxus artists Dick Higgins and Alison Knowles. In the years that followed, I bought some land from them and built a house there in the 1990, the house where I now live and am recording this introduction. Since 1990, my relationship with Bread and Puppet and the Schumann in the neighboring town of Glover continued to grow. The Bread and Puppet Theater engages people, after filling them with hand-milled sourdough bread. They work environmentally and for many decades now, they've been making amazing use of the landscape, natural light changes and natural acoustics. Puppets from tiny to gigantic, signs, banners and hand-made art have always animated their events. Their roadside museum is filled with decades worth of their fanciful performance objects from their local, national and international pageants. The impact a traumatic event has on a person can be significant and lifelong. The experience is different for each and every person. Alison Knowles joins Dale for today's emotive podcast ‘Trauma', which discusses traumatic life events, such as loss, so may be a trigger. We can't change what happened but we can change how we feel about it now. Reliving an event will only take you back to that event time and time again. If we can reframe the emotion that we attach to that event we can stop it hurting us again and again. Alison takes us through how to give a safe space for someone to voice what's going on without judgement. Some great tips we can all takeaway and implement to not only support children through traumatic experiences, but also our friends and family. Welcome to the SENDcast. The phrase 'Every teacher is teacher of SEND' is currently an ideal, not a reality. We created the SENDcast to try and help solve that problem, to help make schools more inclusive and to help teachers be teachers of SEND. The SENDCast is also a great way to get the same information to parents and other people working with young people with SEND. Dale's guest this week is Alison Knowles. Alison is an emotional therapist, she supports emotional resilience. In this episode Dale and Alison discuss grief. Grief is so much more than losing a loved one. It's a traumatic emotion experienced at the loss of or perceived loss of something innately important to an individual. In this episode Dale welcomes Alison Knowles back to the show. Alison is an emotional therapist. This does not mean that she often cries during therapy. She supports emotional resilience. In this episode we are talking about why we are the way we are. We are born different, we are born at different times, different generations with different challenges. We have different experiences, different ideals, we all respond differently to situations and take different things away from events. Because of this Alison, you feel we don't fit into boxes and we don't need labels. They discuss The Ollie Model explanation of why we are different, why we believe what we believe, why we don't need labels and don't fit into boxes. Knowledge is power. Knowledge gives control and control makes us feel safe and able to cope. Understanding that everyone is different and therefore should be treated differently. Why shouldn't we put labels on people Why shouldn't we put people into boxes
We need to give people the tools to be empowered to help themselves and their family – looking inside themselves and not having to look elsewhere for help. This week's guest Alison Knowles. Alison is the author of Ollie and his Super Powers series of books and creator of the Ollie Model. Ali has her own private therapeutic practice in Cambridgeshire where she works with people of all ages, helping them to remove limiting beliefs, fears and phobias, and negative emotions. More and more parents began to bring their children to Ali because of her easy and relaxed approach. Our aim is to be in every school, so we also empower teachers and support staff. Kids become mentors themselves as they learn the Ollie Model and use it on themselves and others. Audiographics — or New Wilderness Audiographics — was a New Wilderness Foundation project of the 1970s. Audiographics offered a number of sound artists the opportunity to record a variety of works — experimental and traditional music, poetry, storytelling and other sound and language art — in a professional recording studio. His closest collaborator, however, was the poet Jerome Rothenberg, with whom, in 1964, he founded and co-directed The New Wilderness Foundation, which explored the avant-garde in all its dimensions, presenting concerts, issuing cassette recordings and, with another major collaborator, RIP Hayman, publishing EAR Magazine, which chronicled new and unusual composition as had no magazine since Minna Lederman’s legendary “Modern Music” in the years before the World Wars. The episode features: Tom Johnson, Phillip Corner, Alison Knowles, Jackson Mac Low and Pauline Oliveros, Charlie Morrow, R.I.P Hayman, Richard Schechner and Joan MacIntosh and Ocarina Orchestra.
Inside Miami's sound chamber, sound artist, designer and composer Gustavo Matamoros introduces to his latest creation: four audible experiences of sound moving through space. Legendary artists inspired Small Sounds Up the Wall (for Alison Knowles), Everglades (for Charles Recher), String Solo (for Vito Acconci) and Eighty-Five Audible Moments (for Pauline Oliveros). Venezuela born Matamoros made this sonic dive possible when he transformed Studio 201 at ArtCenter/South Florida into a 30-channel sound environment. What was Christmas Morning Like? In this episode, we bring back fan favorite Emily Schneider and add my daughter Alison to bring you a panel on Christmas Toys from your past. The favorites, the over hyped, and those you wished for, and either got from Santa... or didn't. Plenty of classic toy commercials as well that inspired so many kids through the years! We talk Furbies, Webkins, Weebles, Tonka Trucks, Spirograph, the best Barbies, and of course, Star Wars toys. That's just the beginning. I'm sure we missed a ton, but there's more to talk about next Christmas. This episode is brought to you by Ageless Apparel. www.facebook.com/AgelessApparel/

"In 1913 Futurist Luigi Russolo developed several noise machines, which he named ‘intonarumori’. In his manifesto, The Art of Noise, Russolo argued that musical instruments could no longer satisfy man's thirst for sounds. Almost 100 years later, people are still exploring the possibilities of sound. This is what I tried to capture in this mix - testing the limits of sound, from shrieking highs to almost imperceptible lows, finding new ways of interpreting and portraying life through the medium of sound. Despite including over 100 artists, the mix by no means represents a completist viewpoint; so many perhaps important artists in the development of 'noise' were left out. It was not my intention to do a 'who's who' of noise music, but rather to show how the exploration of sound has developed over time and how fascinating these explorations are. I did at times take into account the historical significance of the piece/artist when choosing tracks, although I was steered mainly by what was sonically interesting to me. Well that's it - the mix should speak for itself. If you are interested in digging deeper please follow the links provided. Listen at maximum volume and enjoy."
