From Amy: I have been a fan of Linda's gorgeous imagery ever since I met her in an online writing forum. At the time, we were both publishing our books with birds on the cover. The thing about poetry is, sometimes, especially at a moment like now—one week out from pivotal presidential elections in the United States—where the rhetoric has gotten QUITE LOUD, and it's already been a LOUD nearly-decade, our nervous systems need a break. We need soothing words that speak to our humanity. And so this episode is intentionally timed for right now... Beyond that, I love talking with Linda about how she works her magic, and I suspect you will love to hear what she says too.Linda Flaherty Haltmaier is an award-winning author and the Poet Laureate Emeritus of Andover, MA. Named the winner of the Robert Frost Poetry Prize, she is known for her “sensational imagery, her deft ear for the music of language, and her emotional sonar for sounding the depths of love (and anger).” Her new collection, Shadows Set to Burn, was recently honored with the 2024 International Book Award for Narrative Poetry. Her debut collection, Rolling up the Sky, claimed the Homebound Publications Poetry Prize and her follow-up, To the Left of the Sun, was the winner of the American Bookfest Award for Poetry. Additional accolades include winning the JuxtaProse Poetry Prize and the Palm Beach Poetry Festival Competition, as well as Finalist honors for the Princemere Poetry Prize, the New Millennium Award for Poetry, the Joy Bale Boone Poetry Prize, the Tucson Festival of the Book Literary Award, and more. Nominated for four Pushcart Prizes, Linda's work has been featured widely in journals and anthologies. A graduate of Harvard, Linda leads poetry workshops, gives readings, and promotes poetry on the North Shore of Boston where she lives with her husband and daughter.https://www.instagram.com/linda.thepoet/Buy Linda's book here & write a review Amy Hallberg is the author of Tiny Altars: A Midlife Revival and German Awakening: Tales from an American Life. Acclaimed New York Times award-winning author C.J. Box always delivers a mixture of suspense, the outdoors, and family relationships that are the heart of the Joe Pickett series. And so he does again in THREE-INCH TEETH, the 24thnovel in the Joe Pickett series. In this newest page-turner, Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett faces two different kinds of rampaging beasts—one animal, one human. C. J. chats with Russell and Alan about what inspired this new story about a rogue grizzly bear and an ex-prisoner. Then, Shannon Baker returns to the podcast to introduce her recently released Kate Fox mystery, BULL's EYE, once again set in the Sand Hills of Nebraska. When a top bull breeder is mauled to death at a rodeo, Kate quickly realizes that this so-called accident hides a much darker truth. How deep is the corruption? Who will be left standing? Shannon fills Russell and Alan in on what it was like to research and write about a rodeo and what Kate Fox will be up to next. This week's song, written and performed by Micki Fuhrman, is “You Oughta See Wyoming.” C. J. Box, Shannon Baker, and Micki Fuhrman will all be featured at the Tucson Festival of Books on March 9-10 at the University of Arizona. You can learn more about them in previous episodes of the Cowboy Up Podcast.

The course of his life alters when he encounters a skin-changing warrior who, by all accounts, shouldn’t exist. The journey that follows sets Danso against an enormous conspiracy, of violently suppressed histories, elicit magic, and forbidden lands. Their efforts could reshape an empire—or cost them everything. In the ancient. city of Bassa, Danso is a clever scholar on the cusp of achieving greatness—only he doesn’t want it. But when Danso stumbles across a warrior wielding magic that shouldn’t exist, he’s put on a collision course with Bassa’s darkest secrets. On February 13, 2020, No More Deaths hosted a benefit entitled An Evening with Luis Alberto Urrea at El Casino Ballroom. Luis Alberto Urrea is the acclaimed author of 18 best-selling books. Born in Tijuana, Mexico to a Mexican father and an American mother, Urrea uses his dual-culture life experiences to explore greater themes of love, loss, and triumph. He lived in Tucson for a time in the 90s where he connected with some of his literary heroes, began The Hummingbird's Daughter, and met his wife Cindy. He continues to be a frequent visitor to Tucson and has presented at the Tucson Festival of Books each year since its inception. In part 2 of this 2 part series, Urrea responds to an audience question about The House of Broken Angels. Urrea's extended family throws one last birthday party for their patriarch just before he succumbs to terminal cancer. He also discussed a book that he is working on now about his Anglo mother who served in World War II. No More Deaths is an advocacy group based in Tucson and Phoenix, Arizona, United States, that seeks to end the deaths of undocumented immigrants crossing the desert regions near the United States-Mexico border. Nature illustrator Beth Surdut has as many stories in her head as she's had homes in her life, and with a life like hers, that's quite a lot! But of all her numerous experiences, perhaps none was as challenging as that most perilous of enterprises -- house hunting in Hawai'i. At the "Home" show in 2015, the Odyssey crowd joined Beth on a strange journey from the death of a beloved friend to the liberal sex lives of stoners, and finally, of course, to Tucson. From Beth's Odyssey bio: You can hear and see nature illustrator Beth Surdut on 89.1 Arizona Spotlight's web page, encouraging listeners to pay attention to the critters that crawl, fly and skitter around us. Her illustrated work, Listening to Raven, won the 2013 Tucson Festival of Books Literary Award for Non-Fiction. Elements of her raven clan have appeared in Orion Magazine, flown across the digitally looped Art Billboard Project in Albany, New York and roosted at the New York State Museum. This episode was performed and recorded in front of a live audience at The Screening Room in Tucson, AZ, on October 1st, 2015, and was curated by Jen Nowicki Clark. Several weeks ago, I attended a wonderful event, the Tucson Festival of Books at the University of Arizona campus. The event is so joyful because it is literary. There were authors talking about a spectrum of topics. There were poetesses, such as Anne Waldman, speaking about the ways of the world. I got to ask Anne a question: do you think women will someday run the world? If so, what form of governance structure will she create? She said we can't know this question until it happens, but that women already rule the world indirectly. Women have gotten into positions of power such as women who are now in the military. Well, I feel strongly that there needs to be a debate about if women solderiers makes a feminist culture arise. I attended several workshops on self-publishing and print on demand. It inspired me to go ahead and publish my online book, Gaia Religion. It might take me a while though because I got to learn now to do everything myself. And so, the fun begins!
