Ted is joined by Johnny Compton, a Stoker Award-nominated, San Antonio-based author of horror stories whose debut novel, The Spite House, was released in 2023. In its review of the book, Esquire noted that “You can trace the tradition of the American ‘Bad Place' from Edgar Allan Poe through Shirley Jackson, Richard Matheson, and Stephen King, all the way to Johnny Compton and The Spite House.”Johnny's work in progress (at least for the purposes of the discussion here) is a book you'll be able to read later this year. Titled Devils Kill Devils, it's about a woman who believes she has a guardian angel who has saved her life multiple times—only to see that same entity show up on her wedding night and murder her husband. This begs the question: What has this supposed angel been saving her for?Johnny and Ted start out talking about pacing, which in Johnny's case, changes depending on the type of horror he's writing. He then unpacks the connection he's always seen between writing horror and writing comedy and the challenge that arises in both from readers knowing what type of story they're in while the characters don't. Johnny also discusses not wanting to kill a particular character even though he knew he had to and his relationship to horror movies. And because he is technically done writing Devils Kill Devils and is already onto his third novel, Johnny and Ted talk about that one, too, including the 3-D chess writers play with themselves when trying to title the book they're working on, knowing full well that it may have to change down the road.Find Johnny Online:Website: johnnycompton.com Working Drafts episodes and info for requesting transcripts as well as more details about Ted and his books are available on his website, thetedfox.com.

Tenth of December: Stories

In 2013, Booklovers read George Saunders' short story collection Tenth of December, which was considered one of the best books of the year by a number of outlets, including the New York Times, and was widely heralded as a masterwork of the format. Saunders is considered one of our greatest living American writers, and his talent as a writer and creative thinker seems to know no limits. So when Booklovers met to discuss Tenth of December, we were shocked at what we heard: The group hated it. So in 2021, Jess decided to return to the short story collection that caused such strife in the group (they don't usually hate anything!) and analyze it with Joseph and Carmanita to see how Tenth of December has aged, if it's still controversial, and what Saunders may have about the world we're living in today. As it turns out, George Saunders is out here working in 3013, trying his hardest to catch us all up to his sense of humanity, of kindness, and of self-awareness, all conveyed through a light toe-dip into the world of speculative fiction, especially science fiction and horror. The ten stories in the collection range in length and scope, from “Puppy”, a vignette about two mothers coming together over the sale of a puppy, to “Home”, a Stoker Award nominee about a veteran who can't figure out where he fits now that he's back in America.

In this episode I interview writer Scott Goudsward. Scott's love of vampires began at an early age watching Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee, and Peter Cushing on Creature Double Feature on Saturday afternoons. Scott always said he was going to write the massive vampire epic novel. Trailer Trash was not it. Scott's first published story, also called “Trailer Trash,” appeared in the anthology The Darkest Thirst. The novel was based on that story. Since then he has penned the screenplay for the short film “Granite Voice” and co-written two non-fiction books with his brother, David (Shadows Over New England and Shadows Over Florida). Currently he’s co-editing two anthologies for Chaosium with Rachel Kenley, Once Upon an Apocalypse, volume 1 and 2. Scott's short fiction has most recently appeared in the Stoker Award-nominated anthology Epitaphs, and the forthcoming Carnival of the Damned and Atomic Age Cthulhu. Visit Scott’s web site at http://www.goudsward.com/scott/ Goudsward is spelled g-o-u-d-s-w-a-r-d. Note: This interview was recorded at a convention, so there are varying levels of background noise.
