Roland Kirk. Kindred know-it-alls Deon and Jay kick knowledge…f#@% it, you know where this is going. In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For the past half century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2024, kooky, knuckleheaded yet somehow still award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential theme of their upcoming thirty-ninth episode. Together, they decided... to default back to the alphabet. Because they have a reasonably solid grasp of the alphabet and how it works. They had previously utilized the letters A thru J, so naturally, they went with K. Our favorite selections from the K section in outr collections mixtape: [SIDE ONE] (1) Al Gromer Khan – Konya (2) John Krautner – I Need Sugar (3) Rahsaan Roland Kirk – Freaks for the Festival Part One (4) Kitchens of Distinction – Railwayed (5) Khruangbin featuring Nina Simone – Black is the Color of my True Love's Hair [SIDE TWO] (1) The Kingbees – Man Made for Love (2) Key-Matic – Breakin' in Space (3) Klark Kent – Away From Home (4) Kris Kristofferson – Please Don't Tell Me How the Story Goes (5) The Korgis – Perfect Hostess Sonic contributors to LLR podcast episode 39 include: Holland-Dozier-Holland, Brothers Johnson, Head Hunters, Sault, Blues Brothers, Donald Trump, The Alkoholiks, Dave Matthews Band, Pearl Jam, Dreamville, J. Tonight's Jazz Feature is unique even in the varied discography of Charles Mingus. First of all Mingus plays only piano here and chants, sings and delivers verbal encouragement to the soloists. Also the band is built around the amazing talents of Roland Kirk (aka Rahsaan Roland Kirk) who plays his tenor saxophone, manzello (a type of soprano saxophone), his stritch (an elongated alto saxophone), flute and various percussion and sundry instruments like whistles, gongs etc. In the band too is tenor saxophonist Booker Ervin and trombone great Jimmy Knepper, both Mingus favorites. On bass is Doug Watkins and on drums is of course, Dannie Richmond. The music is loose, free and covers all the emotions from humor to anger and is sometimes surrealistic. This band was formed in the Summer of 1961 and marked a switch in style for Mingus but was still reflective of his immense musical personality. This album was recorded for Atlantic Records on November 6, 1961 and issued as "Oh Yeah!". It stands alone and is tonight's Jazz Feature.

"Who has the hippest chops in the world?" If you're going to ask that question on a record, you had better have the nuts to back it up. I mean, you will be annihilated, humiliated for the rest of time, if you don't. Rahsaan Roland Kirk knew he had them and so did everyone else on the scene. To this day, any time you see a saxophonist playing 3 horns at once or circular breathing or playing the nose flute or any of the other manifestations that Rahsaan developed, they are paying tribute to him, whether they know it or not. Gary Lucas is a New York City treasure who does things with the guitar no one thought possible. Did part of his inspiration come from seeing and hearing Rahsaan perform in 1971? Do we have live recordings of Rahsaan from that period in the WKCR archives? Is Gary going to join host Mitch Goldman in the studio Monday night for Deep Focus? There's more than one way to find out. "The Old Rugged Cross" has been a country gospel favorite ever since it became the title song of Ernest Tubb's 1952 gospel album; it has been performed by some of the twentieth century's most important recording artists, including Al Green, Andy Griffith, Anne Murray, Brad Paisley, Chet Atkins, Chris Barber, John Berry, Floyd Cramer, George Jones, Eddy Arnold, Jim Reeves, Johnny Cash and June Carter, Kevin Max, Ella Fitzgerald, Mahalia Jackson, Jo Stafford, Gordon MacRae, Merle Haggard, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Ray Price, Ricky Van Shelton, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans,[9] The Oak Ridge Boys, The Statler Brothers, Vince Gill, Willie Nelson, Alan Jackson, George Beverly Shea, James Morrison on the 1990 album "Snappy Doo", and John Prine on the 2007 album "Standard Songs for Average People" with Mac Wiseman. British television dramatist Dennis Potter used the gospel song prominently in several of his plays, most notably Pennies from Heaven (1978); and the song also played a major part in "Gridlock" (2007), an episode of the long-running sci-fi drama series Doctor Who. In early 2009, the song was covered by Ronnie Milsap on his gospel album Then Sings My Soul.

- Clickety Clack, won't somebody bring the Spirit back ? - (Roland Kirk)EPK album Inner Songs d'Olivier Temime. What an honest, heartfelt, and profound conversation. Loved chatting with @May Cobb May is the author of MY SUMMER DARLINGS, THE HUNTING WIVES and BIG WOODS. Originally from East Texas, May moved to San Francisco where she studied Victorian Literature; then she lived in Los Angeles for a few years working for filmmaker/writer Ron Shelton and his wife, the actress Lolita Davidovich. She resides in Austin, Texas, with her husband and son where she says, “I enjoy napping, staring into space, making to-do lists for my to-do lists, shoveling cookies down my throat when I'm writing a particularly difficult scene (and even when I'm not), wearing my PJ's as often as I can get away with and collapsing into bed at the end of a day with a great book.” May's currently finishing a book about the late, jazz great, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, a project which has been in the works for twenty years. Kirk was a human phenomenon—a multi-instrumentalist who was best known for his miraculous ability to play three saxophones simultaneously. During his brief life, he defied staggering odds—from blindness, to prejudice, to a paralyzing stroke—to play the music that came to him through dreams. And May shares on today's episode why she felt a deep connection with Kirk's story, which also inspired her to become a writer. The mother of a child with autism, May talks about societal expectations and the judgment she's experienced. And we also talked about the representation of autism in her latest book, A LIKELY WOMAN. In today's episode, you'll learn more about May's inspiring story, how she carves time to create, and what inspires her writing. Thank you, May, for this honest, poignant conversation.

Lewis Allan Reed (March 2, 1942 - October 27, 2013) was an American musician, singer, songwriter, and poet. He was the guitarist, singer, and principal songwriter for the rock band the Velvet Underground and had a solo career that spanned five decades. Although not commercially successful during its existence, the Velvet Underground became regarded as one of the most influential bands in the history of underground and alternative rock music. Reed's distinctive deadpan voice, poetic and transgressive lyrics, and experimental guitar playing were trademarks throughout his long career. In this episode 100 of the songs Reed considered the greatest of all time, as shared with the Helsinki Music Club in 2004. We are thrilled to talk with author May Cobb about planning your author financial life, working with multiple agents, writing lifelike sociopaths, and the changing trends of “likability” in characters. We loved reading My Summer Darlings—it really is the perfect summer read—and hearing about the story behind the story. May says: I grew up in the piney woods of East Texas where MY SUMMER DARLINGS, THE HUNTING WIVES and BIG WOODS are set. After college, I moved to San Francisco where I studied Victorian Literature for my Master's, and gravitated towards that era's detective novels, known as "sensation novels", such as Wilke Collins' THE WOMAN IN WHITE. I then lived in Los Angeles for a few years where I worked for filmmaker/writer Ron Shelton and his wife, the actress Lolita Davidovich. I currently live in Austin, Texas, with my husband and son where we enjoy traipsing around the area's many beautiful parks. I also enjoy napping, staring into space, making to-do lists for my to-do lists, shoveling cookies down my throat when I'm writing a particularly difficult scene (and even when I'm not), wearing my PJ's as often as I can get away with and collapsing into bed at the end of a day with a great book. I'm currently finishing a book about the late, jazz great, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, a project which has been in the works for twenty years. Kirk was a human phenomenon—a multi-instrumentalist who was best known for his miraculous ability to play three saxophones simultaneously. During his brief life, he defied staggering odds—from blindness, to prejudice, to a paralyzing stroke—in order to play the music that came to him through dreams. His story is what made me want to become a writer. My writing has appeared in The Washington Post, The Rumpus, Austin Monthly, and Texas Highways Magazine. My proudest achievement remains clinching 1st place in the UIL competition for Personal Writing when I was in the 4th grade. Learn more about May here: https://www.maycobb.com/

SUPPORT ME ON PATREON WATCH MUSIC is not a GENRE VIDEOS and MORE FEATURED SONG: NICK – “Come A Little Closer” (from The Metrogrande Sessions) What is jazz? At this point there are so many subdivisions that it's not easy to define. That word – “JAZZ” – 100% evokes different sounds & ideas in every person's head. For me, jazz has to have some form of improvisation – freedom within form – and it has to be funky, at least a little. If I were doing a podcast on jazz in general, I'd throw down some more descriptions, and even get into what I think jazz ISN'T. But that's not what this week is about. I ask the question because this week's spotlight albums are likely NOT the first things that come to mind when most people think of jazz. Take Heavy Flute – a compilation of jazz cuts from the 1960s & 1970s featuring flute solos. Released in 2000 (and now out of print and nowhere to be found on streaming services), it was an instant classic for me. Say “flute” to someone, and the first words that come to their mind are unlikely to be “funky” or “cool”. Yet this album proves without a doubt that the flute can be both. Ian Anderson knows this. So does Lizzo. And Walt Parazaider of Chicago. The songs on this album range from lyrical to percussive & everything in between. When you listen to it – and I do suggest looking up every song, you're gonna get a big 1960s/70s vibe. And you're gonna be surprised at how diverse & freakin' cool & funky it is. My favorite is no question Rahsaan Roland Kirk. He treats the flute like everything from what it's meant to be to a percussion instrument to a microphone. What he did was practically punk. The dude weirded out in all the best ways, and clearly influenced Walt Parazaider's solos. Herbie Mann is a close second fave on this album, but you could start with any track and be blown away. Pun intended. Crime Jazz was released in two parts (Music in the First Degree& Music in the Second Degree). Both albums came out in 1997, and are also out of print & impossible to find on streaming. They feature ensemble jazz made especially for crime movies & TV. Think of the themes to Mission: Impossible (the old TV show, not the movie series) or Peter Gunn. Though the first one isn't featured in this compilation, you will find other compositions by the great Lalo Schifrin. The second was by Henry Mancini and performed by Quincy Jones and his Orchestra. Check out Elmer Bernstein's tracks too. He's always been a fave of mine. “Blues for Sunnyland" Von Freeman: Live At The Dakota (Premonition Records, 2001) Von Freeman, Bobby Peterson, Terry Burns, Phil Hey. Dorthaan Kirk has been named a 2020 NEA Jazz Master for her jazz advocacy…and it's easy to see why. For more than 40 years, Dorthaan has been a major force at WBGO, Newark Public Radio—the only full-time jazz station in the New York/New Jersey area. She had been married to the brilliant jazz multi-instrumentalist Rahsaan Roland Kirk who died tragically young. After his death, Dorthaan wondered what her next step would be when a phone call changed everything: someone was starting a jazz radio station in Newark; would she interested in coming on-board? She was, and the rest is history. Dorthaan took on the role of special events and community relations coordinator at WBGO, bringing with her creativity, tenacity, a knowledge of the music business and firm friendships with many musicians. Among the programs she spearheaded at WBGO are its Jazzathons—a live 24 hour musical fund-raiser, the WBGO art gallery which supports local artists and opens the station to the community so they might enjoy the art, and, dearest to Dorthaan's heart, the WBGO children's concert series where musicians have been introducing children to jazz through two generations. Dorthaan is a great talker—as she will be the first one to tell you—so it's a podcast filled with stories, memories and love for the people who make and support jazz.
2018 NEA Jazz Master Todd Barkan is a man of many talents: impresario, club owner, producer, artistic programmer. But he would count chief among them his deep and abiding love for jazz and the musicians who create. Owner of the legendary Keystone Korner, Todd created a club where musicians ruled and audiences felt at home. In this music-filled podcast, he talks about that great San Francisco club and shares stories about his many friend-- jazz greats like Miles Davis, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Bobby Hutcherson and Sonny Rollins.
Tenor saxophone icon Sonny Rollins composed his first film score in 1965 for the movie that put Michael Caine in the map. The movie was "Alfie". Caine played a British cad who used his looks and charm to manipulate women until he met his match and had to grow up. Rollins composed and played the music that was used throughout the film and the score was issued on a fine recording that you will hear on tonight's Jazz Feature.. We hear Sonny in wonderful form backed by an orchestra conducted by Oliver Nelson who expanded Rollins' compositions for a big band. Sonny is heard extensively but there are fine solos by guitarist Kenny Burrell and pianist Roger Kellaway. A strong rhythm section with bassist Walter Booker and great drummer Frankie Dunlop are heard to wonderful advantage. We will also follow the Rollins album with a complimentary version of the famous Bert Bacharach/Hal David tune that was also featured in the movie: "What's It All About Alfie?" (aka "Alfie"). This tune will be played by Rahsaan Roland Kirk. This will be the first of two Jazz film scores for movies that had nothing to do with Jazz. Next week, one by Miles Davis.
