On today's show, we're heading south to California to learn about the groundbreaking Tribal Marine Stewards Network.The Tribal Marine Stewards Network, or TMSN, is an alliance of Tribal Nations working collaboratively to reclaim their right to protect and restore coastal and marine ecosystems in California.  Even in the modern era, government agencies have historically been either resistant, or outright hostile to, Tribal co-management and sovereignty, (google northwest fishing wars for just one modern example) and so I was really excited to see the State of California changing course and supporting a co-management strategy.Of course, that is not the way it started.  Tribes had to work for years to bring State agencies around to a collaborative approach, and I think there is a lot to learn from their success.So I'm joined today by Chairman Valentin Lopez of the Aham Mutsun Tribal Band, which is  one of the founding tribes of the TMSN.There is way more to the Tribal Marine Stewards Network, and the history of colonizers and indigenous peoples in California in general, than we were able to get into in this conversation.  So I highly recommend that you check out our show notes for links and resources.  And since all non tribal land in this country is stolen land, if you want to learn more about the history of whose land you're on, a good place to start is https://native-land.ca/.As always, email me with feedback, show ideas, or anything else at michael@coastrange.org.  And if you like what we do, please leave us a review in your podcast app and click the donate link in the podcast show notes. Valentin is Mutsun, Awaswas, Chumash and Yokuts (http://amahmutsun.org/governance/tribal-council) and he joins us for this exclusive interview regarding Amah Mutsun Nation history, culture, traditions, traditional ecological knowledge, California Indian histories, the ongoing work of the Amah Mutsun Land Trust (https://www.amahmutsunlandtrust.org/) to heal Mother Earth within their traditional territories and protect the sacred site: Today on American Indian Airwaves, we got to the traditional lands of the Amah Muston Nation in Santa Clara County, CA where since 2015, the Nation and community member continue fighting to protect Juristac, which lies at the heart of the ancestral lands of the Amah Mutsun Nation, which Amah Mutsun ancestors lived and held sacred ceremonies at this location in the southern foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, above the confluence of the Pajaro and San Benito rivers. Moreover, Juristac is colonially known as the Sargent Ranch and is under threat from the proposed Sargent Quarry that will impact 320 acres of traditional lands. The plan includes a 14-acre processing plant, three 200-foot-deep open pit quarry sites, a 1.6-mile-long conveyor belt, and a 30-foot-wide access road. An estimated 40 million tons of sand and gravel aggregate would be produced over the life of the mine, primarily for use in local road building and general construction. Sargent Ranch is owned by an investor group, Debt Acquisition Company of America (DACA) (https://daca4.com/), and based in San Diego, CA, is behind the proposed 320-acre open pit sand and gravel mining operation on the property. Presently, the Santa Clara County supports the project. In the early morning hours of August 16, 2020, 12,000 lightning strikes exploded across northern California, igniting more than 585 wildfires. In the Santa Cruz Mountains scattered blazes grew into one massive burning organism — The CZU August Lightning Complex Fire — eating all in its path, scorching some 86,000 acres, destroying over 900 homes and Big Basin, California's first state park. We hear from young men and women from the Amah Mutsun Tribal band who have been working to clear and steward the land; archaeologists and historians from the historic Big Basin redwood State Park; and from residents of the Santa Cruz mountains who shared their experiences and stories for the historical record. This story grew out of a collaboration with the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History. People who lost their homes in the blaze were invited to bring in artifacts sifted from the ashes to be photographed by award winning photographer Shmuel Thaler and to be interviewed by The Kitchen Sisters about the fire, their homes, the environment, their lives. Though there's widespread consensus that the slavery and colonization that characterize the history of European relations with Africa represent a legacy of grave injustice, there is much less agreement on how to redress that injustice. Professor M. Amah Edoh, who teaches in MIT's Department of Anthropology, designed the course 21A.S01 Reparations for Slavery and Colonization with the goal of honestly facing the historical record and openly discussing how best to respond. Because she believes expertise is too often conceived of as something that flows “north-south” from the developed nations toward the developing world, she structured the course to embrace expertise wherever it might be found—recruiting guest lecturers from various disciplines and from institutions around the world, as well as activists currently involved in the quest for reparative justice. She even went a step further, sharing the lecture videos on YouTube while the semester was still ongoing and inviting viewers to contribute their own insights into how to deal with the ongoing legacy of historical wrongs. She spoke with me about her latest book Amah Faraway, which has many of its scenes set in Taipei, Taiwan. In this episode, Savannah explores the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band (AMTB) Relearning Program hosted at the UCSC campus Arboretum. The program is a collaborative effort between the AMTB and the Garden to assist the Tribe in their efforts of cultural revitalization, recuperation and relearning of dormant cultural knowledge, and environmental justice.
