In this conversation with M. V. Ramana, we delve into one of the most pressing issues of our time: the climate crisis. In response to this crisis, various solutions have been proposed, with nuclear energy emerging as one of the most prominent. After more than a decade of caution following the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster, a global consensus has gradually formed around nuclear power as a viable and efficient solution to meet energy demands. Advocates argue that nuclear energy can not only complement fossil fuels but also fulfill the growing energy needs of the world. However, these arguments often prioritize the energy requirements of developed countries, overlooking the high costs, significant risks, and the lengthy timeline needed to build the necessary infrastructure for nuclear energy optimization. Moreover, the current push for nuclear energy sidesteps democratic considerations, with decisions skewed by a technocratic and bureaucratic approach to energy regulation. Professor M. V. Ramana critically examines the often-misleading optimism surrounding nuclear energy and highlights how this industry's resurgence signals a return to a techno-bureaucratic model of governance.

Born and raised in Hokkaido, Japan, Professor Ryuzo Yanagimachi, the 2023 Kyoto Prize Laureate in Basic Sciences, developed a love for nature. He became fascinated with the fertilization process of sea urchins. After studying the fertilization of fish and the life cycle of parasitic barnacles, he realized little was known about mammalian fertilization. He went on to train with Professor M.C. Chang at the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology, the father of mammalian in vitro fertilization and then started his own lab at the University of Hawai'i. His basic studies contributed to understanding the hidden capacity of sperm and eggs and overcoming human fertility problems. Professor Yanagimachi passed away in 2023 at the age of 95, just a few months before he was to receive his Kyoto Prize award. Dr. W. Steven Ward, Director of the Institute for Biogenesis Research at the University of Hawai'i will present Prof. Yanagimachi's life and work. Series: "Kyoto Prize Symposium" [Health and Medicine] [Science] [Show ID: 39423]

India is the only country to have shed blood in a skirmish with Chinese soldiers in recent history, and they're ready to shed more blood to defend their country, according to Professor M.D. Nalalapat, the director of the department of geopolitics and international relations at India's Manipal University. He joins us in this episode to discuss Taiwan's election, how the Ukraine war is affecting Taiwan, and India's relations with Russia.
Särskilt i Erdogans Turkiet odlar AKP-partiet neo-osmanska drömmar. Though there's widespread consensus that the slavery and colonization that characterize the history of European relations with Africa represent a legacy of grave injustice, there is much less agreement on how to redress that injustice. Professor M. Amah Edoh, who teaches in MIT's Department of Anthropology, designed the course 21A.S01 Reparations for Slavery and Colonization with the goal of honestly facing the historical record and openly discussing how best to respond. Because she believes expertise is too often conceived of as something that flows “north-south” from the developed nations toward the developing world, she structured the course to embrace expertise wherever it might be found—recruiting guest lecturers from various disciplines and from institutions around the world, as well as activists currently involved in the quest for reparative justice. She even went a step further, sharing the lecture videos on YouTube while the semester was still ongoing and inviting viewers to contribute their own insights into how to deal with the ongoing legacy of historical wrongs. In this episode, Prof. Edoh describes the motivation for this innovative course structure and reflects on the challenges of grappling with such a sensitive subject.Relevant Resources:MIT OpenCourseWareThe OCW Educator PortalShare your teaching insightsProfessor Edoh's faculty pageCourse materials by Professor Edoh on OCW21A.S01 Reparations for Slavery and ColonizationOpen Learning story on 21A.S01OCW YouTube playlist for 21A.S01Africa's Expertise (YouTube lecture by Prof Edoh)African Futures Action LabHow Africa Has Been Made to Mean (2020 episode of Chalk Radio)Music in this episode by Blue Dot Sessions Connect with UsIf you have a suggestion for a new episode or have used OCW to change your life or those of others, tell us your story. Environmental justice advocates in California have fought for years against landfills, refineries and other polluting facilities in their neighborhoods. They insist that a progressive environmental agenda can't tackle crucial environmental issues such as climate change from a purely global perspective; the local impacts matter, too. They say that regulators and politicians need to craft environmental policy with an eye toward reversing the discrimination and racism that have long affected low-income communities of color. Michael Méndez, an assistant professor of urban planning and public policy, documents some of the crucial years of the environmental justice movement in California from 2006 to the present in his book “Climate Change from the Streets: How Conflict and Collaboration Strengthen the Environmental Justice Movement.” The book recently won the Harold and Margaret Sprout Award, sponsored by the International Studies Association (ISA). On this episode of the UCI Podcast, Professor Méndez talks about California's leading role in the environmental justice movement, what he believes are the flaws of California's cap and trade carbon emissions reduction system, and why the Green New Deal isn't really that new.
