Rosemary Anderson High school has experienced a tidal wave of trauma in the past two and a half years. Five students have died in shootings, another was stabbed to death and two more kids died in car crashes. My colleagues embedded in that alternative school for much of this year – the result of those months of stories is a series called “The Safest Place.” On the latest Beat Check with the Oregonian, we chat with Noelle Crombie, Beth Nakamura and Samantha Swindler.  We talked about their project, what they learned inside and outside the walls of Rosemary Anderson, how the kids and staff are coping with the trauma, and the success stories of students who've experienced a lifetime of challenges, many not of their own making. Weir Cook and Paul Baer, WWI aviators and former airport namesakes: encore

hoosierhistorylive

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 26, 2021 55:04

Both were pioneer aviators and heroic World War I fighter pilots from Indiana, and both were killed while flying aircraft overseas. And Weir Cook and Paul Baer once were the namesakes of the airports in the two largest cities in their home state. Today, although those airports are officially called Indianapolis International Airport and Fort Wayne International Airport, the terminal buildings at each still carry the name of these two great airmen. To explore the lives of the aviators who earned national acclaim for their valor during what once was known as the Great War, Nelson is joined by two guests in this encore of a show originally broadcast in 2018. The guests are: William Bell, an Indianapolis-based writer and retired law enforcement officer who has researched Hancock County native Weir Cook (1892-1943), recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross in World War I. Cook also was hailed as a hero during World War II even though he was well into his 40s when he returned to the Army Air Corp and flew combat missions over the Pacific.   And Tony Garel-Frantzen of Fort Myers, Fla., the author of Hoosier Aviator Paul Baer: America's First Combat Ace (The History Press, 2017). In his biography of Baer (1894-1930), Tony contends the Fort Wayne native became the first American to shoot down an enemy plane in combat and the first to earn the title of "combat ace." Tony writes that Baer's historic achievements often have been overlooked because he flew for a French squadron prior to the United States' entry into World War I.   The designation of "combat ace," which both Cook and Baer achieved, is given to pilots who accomplish five aerial victories during warfare. After World War I, Cook helped develop the first municipal airport in Indianapolis, which opened in 1931; he also became its first manager. Following Cook's reenlistment during World War II, he commanded air bases on islands in the Pacific. After Cook was killed while flying a combat mission, the Indianapolis airport at Indianapolis was named Weir Cook Airport. In 1976, its name was changed to Indianapolis International Airport, outraging many veterans groups. When the city's newly constructed airport opened at its current site in 2008, the mid-field terminal and the roadway leading to it were named in Cook's honor. In Fort Wayne, Baer had grown up as a shy but adventure-seeking youth, according to Hoosier Aviator. After France declared war on Germany in 1914, Baer was among a few American volunteers who signed up to fight on the side of the French; America did not declare war until 1917. As a combat pilot, Baer flew missions for both France and the United States. While working as a commercial pilot for a Chinese airline in 1930, Baer was killed in an aircraft accident near Shanghai. In his honor, the Fort Wayne airport was called Baer Field until the early 1990s, when it was renamed Fort Wayne International Airport. Like Baer, Weir Cook received his initial flight training in France. He was born Harvey Weir Cook in the small Hancock County town of Wilkinson, where a community park has been named in his honor. Cook grew up in Anderson, graduated from Anderson High School and attended both DePauw University and Washington & Jefferson College before moving to France at the outbreak of World War I. During the war, Cook downed at least seven enemy aircraft and was promoted to flight commander of the 94th Aero Squadron, a pursuit (fighter) unit of the U.S. Army Air Service. After the war, Cook undertook many roles in the civilian aviation industry and helped bring the first municipal airport to Indianapolis. He was killed during World War II in a crash while flying a P-39 Bell Airacobra fighter plane over the Pacific island of New Caledonia. During World War I, Baer achieved his first aerial victory in March 1918, shooting down a German fighter plane while flying for a French squadron. That victory - which was quickly followed by others - made Baer the first U.S. pilot to shoot down an enemy plane in warfare, according to Tony Garel-Frantzen's biography. By mid-April 1918, Baer had felled five enemy planes, making him the first American combat ace, Tony writes. In May 1918, Baer's plane was shot down. Although he escaped serious injuries, Baer became a prisoner of war and spent time in several German prisons. "True to his reticent nature," Tony writes, "Baer rarely spoke in detail while he was alive about the day he was shot down or about the months he spent in captivity."

My guest on this episode of Nobody’s Safe w/Brady Laber is Rich Linville who each night writes the Scoreboard Stumper question during Cincinnati Reds games at Great American Ballpark. Rich grew up a Reds fan on the Eastside of Cincinnati during the 1970s. He attributes his deep love for the Reds from the radio calls each night by the legendary team of Marty Brenneman and Joe Nuxhall. Interestingly enough his favorite baseball player was Kansas Royals third basemen and Hall of Famer George Brett. As a child of he 70’s, Rich talks about collecting baseball cards, reading box scores in the newspaper and watching the national game of the week and “This Week in Baseball.” Rich graduated from Anderson High School and later Northern Kentucky University. He interned in the sports department at WLWT Channel 5 in Cincinnati. This is where he was given the opportunities to join the Cincinnati Reds scoreboard production crew. It was 1988 and the Reds has just installed a video board at Riverfront Stadium and initially relied heavily on employees from Channel 5 to help operate the board. As an intern, Rich started as a fill-in and after a couple of seasons was a full-time crew member starting with the 1990 season. In 1991, he was given the full-time assignment of writing the Scoreboard Stumper question. This question was and still is a staple of the ballpark experience at both Riverfront Stadium (later known as Cinergy Field) and Great American. Rich has made this responsibly his own and spends time year-round developing questions for all 81 home dates. We obviously talk about some of the details of how the questions are constructed. This veers off into a conversation about Rich’s appearance on a trivia show that aired on the MLB Network. Rich also has had some great behind-the-scenes stories about his interactions with famous personalities that he comes across at the ballpark. We finish up with some of the great moments in Reds history that Rich witnessed in person at his perch in the Scoreboard control room over the course of the last 33 seasons. My guest on this episode of Nobody’s Safe w/Brady Laber is the all-time leading scorer at Thomas More University Madison Temple. Madison grew up in Anderson Township which is on the Eastside of Cincinnati so I started by asking her a fun but difficult question. I asked her to compare the Eastside to the Westside since she made a lot of friends in college from the Westside. We talk about her start playing basketball being a teammate of her older sister Haley on a team that was coached by her mom Ceci who played collegiately at Belmont University. Madison played in high for head coach Chris Careltti at Anderson High School. Her older sister Haley also played with Madison for two seasons. The Redskins won the ECC regular season title as Madison was Player of the Year in the league, leading the conference in scoring and rebounding. Unfortunately she tears her ACL just before the playoffs are to begin that sophomore season and is out for the remainder of the year. After a difficult and grueling rehab process she returns for her junior season. She averaging a double-double but again late in the season she suffers an ACL tear in her other knee. Madison makes it back in time for her senior year where she wins her second ECC Player of the Year award leading the Redskins to another conference championship. She had plenty of college scholarship offers but her options became limited after two major knee injuries. She wasn’t even sure if she wanted to play in college until Thomas More University head coach Jeff Hans decides not to give up on her. Madison commits late in the process to the Saints and the rest is history. In her four years at Thomas More, Madison wins two national championships and becomes the program’s all-time leading scorer. She also is tops on the all-time list for assist, field goals and free throws. In 2019, she is named the NCAA D-III National Player of Year. We talk about playing for Coach Hans, her teammates and the memories made during those deep tournament runs. Today Madison is working a full-time job for a financial institution and coaching high school basketball. She is currently an assistant coach at West Clermont High School under head coach Jeff Click. We dive deeper into their healthcare preferences for PCPs, how they like to be communicated with and more. Listen to “Understanding Gen Z: Healthcare Preferences (Part 3)” as we discuss the following: A lot is going on in healthcare right now. There has been a noticeable shift from going to your primary doctor with more urgent care and retail clinics popping up. You can even go to your local pharmacy to be seen for a cold, sinus issues, etc. And now with healthcare technology like telehealth being accepted by private insurance, the landscape has truly changed. What is Gen Z’s preference for seeing a doctor for minor ailments such as the cold or flu? Would they rather make an appointment with their local doctor and go to them? Or would they rather run into a retail clinic? Listen to their answers here. Are you losing patients to consumer-facing telehealth companies? Where does these Gen Zs' relationship stand with primary care physicians? Do they have one? We talk with these Austin, Texas Gen Zers and they discuss what they are looking for in a PCP. As digital natives, they are looking for online patient scheduling to telehealth.During the live in-person recording, we discuss the healthcare preferences of Gen Z when it comes to after-hours. If given the option, they would rather communicate via telehealth with their PCP then going to local retail clinics and third-party apps. What does Gen Z think about mental health? How should it be taught to students? Who should be the one guiding them on things like depression, anxiety, and dealing with suicidal thoughts? As a generation directly caught in the social media highlight reel era, how are they seeing mental health being handled? Are schools teaching mental health to Generation Z students in the right way? Listen as we discuss how they feel. “I feel like if the school were to [teach about mental health], they themselves need to get educated.” How can we bridge the mental health condition education gap? How can we understand Gen Z’s preferences for therapists? Is there too much of a stigma behind going to see a mental health professional? We get their sentiments on peer-to-peer video counseling. Dive deeper into their thought process when it comes to peer-to-peer video support. How would they like to start the communication channel? It's time for season two of the Momnesia Podcast! Sarah and Julie spend time catching up on life by doing a deep dive on four important topics - health, family, careers, and our current faves (what we are listening to, watching and reading). Grab you favorite drink and settle in with us as we fill you in on all the details!   Julie starts us off by sharing about some major health issues she encountered at the beginning of the year. A uterine fibroid was making life unbearable - ridiculous bleeding, shortness of breath, changing clothes every every few hours, emotional rollercoasters, lower back pain, and sleepless nights. The solution was a DaVinci hysterectomy, which brought about the relief she was hoping for, but left Julie out of commission for three weeks. Family, friends, and our online community surrounded her with love and support, for which she is eternally grateful! Sarah gives us an early glimpse into her work on a new health and wellness plan with certified health coach. She's focusing on what she calls, "the holy work of inner peace" - learning how to identify and capture the negative messages and emotions that bounce around in her subconscious mind, and retraining her thoughts to be more loving to her body.  The Shorts are going through a big transition as Colin ends his job at Anderson High School and pursues a dream of becoming self-employed with Colin Short Creative. He's writing a book and offering copywriting services to companies big and small.  School is back in session for the McLaughlin kiddos. Sarah lives out her dream of playing the cello through Soren; Joseph is killing it in math drills and earning the dollar bills (yo) in fourth grade; Anna was successful at roping mom into becoming a Girl Scout Leader, so get ready for cookie season (Do you love Troop Beverly Hills as much as we do?); and the twins could not be more excited to start preschool! Julie is over the top excited to be attending an Enneagram Intensive in Colorado this fall as a part of her professional development plan at work. The training is provided by the Narrative Enneagram Program and is the first step in becoming a certified Enneagram coach, so get ready for more Enneagram discussion on the pod! She's also taking an online course with our new best friend (and future podcast guest) Jen Petro.  Sarah just released a new album - Reverie (available on Spotify and Apple Music) and is already preparing for the holiday season. She will have six shows at The Jazz Kitchen in Indianapolis (December 6-8), featuring friend and winner of The Voice, Josh Kaufman. Sarah will also be performing with the Carmel Symphony at the Carmel Palladeum in December. Make sure to check out her website for details. www.sarahtunes.com So what's our current jam? Julie can't get enough of the Second Life Podcast with Hillary Kerr and Sarah can't stop listening to the Highwomen album.  Make sure to check back for details on our first Momnesia Meet Up! In our latest episode, Mackey is live at Anderson HS in what he says was one of the most electric places he's ever spoken at. Mackey emphasizes that what we learn in sports will translate to the rest of our life. We learn things like integrity, doing the right things because they're the right things to do, and we don't fear the consequence of doing so. We live in a world where people stay quiet because they are afraid of the consequences of doing what's right. What we learn in sports is that there is POWER in standing up for the person on your right and on your left. You makes sacrifices for one another so you can come together as one and stand up for one another. We learn about commitment and attitude and how to respond to situations through sports. There is not a person in the world more powerful than you. You are the most powerful person in the world because no one can make you have a bad attitude. There's not a person in the world that can control your effort but you. You cannot control the cards you've been dealt in life, you cannot control the outcomes, but you can always control your response.
