Her message of accompaniment- “Am I not here; I who am your mother?”- resonates with us today as it resonated with St. Juan Diego, and propels us to be courageous in how we respond to God's calling, in how we spread God's word and God's love." Patrick delves into Tertullian's seminal work de spectaculis, or "The Spectacles," exploring its surprising relevance to our modern lives. Written nearly 1,700 years ago, Tertullian's treatise condemns the violent and immoral entertainments of ancient Rome, drawing sharp parallels to today's media landscape. Patrick unpacks Tertullian's arguments on how Christians become desensitized to sin through such spectacles and the inherent danger this poses to one's conscience and salvation. He explores the contrast between the pagan spectacles and the Christian call to purity, offering practical, wholesome alternatives for entertainment. Join Patrick as he reflects on how Tertullian's insights can guide listeners in making mindful choices about the media they consume, staying true to their faith, and keeping their eyes fixed on eternal rewards.   Gabriel - Act 22: St Paul's conversion story. Alan Weiss' The Uncomfortable Truth

This is a marketing lesson for the Catholic Church. I'm a lector and a Eucharistic Minister in the Church and converted 18 years ago. As some of you know, I've also spent a great deal of my coaching and consulting career in the field of strategy and have written two commercially published books on the topic. The average age in the church my wife and I attend is north of 60. Young people are not drawn to the church in the numbers of old, and as the population ages, it also diminishes. Churches are closing and being combined because there aren't enough priests to go around. They, too, are aging as young men aren't becoming seminarians in large numbers.  Strategically, the Church needs to permit women and married men to become priests, as is the case in many other religions. This would provide not only more people, but more diversity: female points of view (Mary is important only second to Jesus in the Church and many people feel they're equal), and priests experienced in marriage, raising children, and intimate matters.  Tactically, the Church needs to equip existing and future priests with the ability to deliver pragmatic sermons which reflect how Christianity is to be lived daily, not just one day a week for an hour within certain edifices. (And even then, I often don't get a break trying to get out of the parking lot.) I have heard, nationally and internationally, some brilliant sermons delivered by priests, bishops, and cardinals. But too often, the sermon is existential and philosophical, not something parishioners can take with them back home or to work. Too many priests read their sermons, which are horrible and not very heartfelt. And often, what they're reading are their notes from when they first gave that sermon 40 years ago. The church needs to be audience-centered, not clergy-centered, and priests (as well as lectors) need to be instructed in professional speaking skills. (This is why the mega-churches always have highly skilled homilists, by the way). And there's also humor to be found. St. Augustine said, “Lord, please make me a good man. But not too soon!” Church is community. The community deserves more than a shepherd; it deserves a diverse clergy whose messages can be applied to improve lives immediately, delivered in powerful and effective ways. So help me God.

Jack Crews is a retired lawyer who specialized in trial practice in Tulsa. Jack grew up Little Rock, Arkansas and was a lifelong Methodist. He graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1969 with a BS in Mathematics, was called up in 1969 and served two years in the US Army in Vietnam, and received his law degree from the University of Tulsa in 1974. He was received into the Catholic Church at the Church of Saint Mary in 2010. He is an active parishioner serving as a Eucharistic Minister, greeter, and Encore Board member. He also leads the Home Improvement Ministry and the Water Ministry here at the Church. Jack has been married to his wife, Sandy for 53 years and has two children and 3 grandchildren. SHOW NOTES: An essay on prayer written by Saint Jane Frances de Chantal: In prayer we should freely unburden ourselves to God, telling him, our Lord and Master, in the most familiar and confidential way everything, great and small, of heaven or of earth, much or little. Opening our heart and pouring it all out to him without reserve, recounting its burdens, its sins, its aspirations. Revealing our whole self, seeking repose in his company as with a friend on whom one relies and to whom one makes known alike the good and the bad. This is what Holy Scripture calls pouring out his heart like water in the divine presence, manifesting not only what is of importance but the least thing. Seeing that diving providence governs all and that we can do nothing without its aid, it is wise to confer with God, for whatever good comes to us in any way it comes from him. Let there be no timidity in our supplications. He does not like it. The hour of prayer having come, the soul who with holy impatience awaits that happy moment ought straightaway to answer the signal and hasten to receive the honor about to be conferred on her. She should then invoke the Holy Spirit, the Blessed Virgin, her good angel and such saints as she may choose to help her in her prayer and to remain with her while she is before God. She should gather together all her powers and say to herself: My soul, you are about to appear before God to hold converse with him, a truce to all else.

He's a new revert (11 months) and reverted after a two year study and comes from a Catholic background, being a Eucharistic minister and member of the Knights of Columbus. About Grant: Converted in 2021 (July 10th) 59 years old Born in USA, Pittsburgh, Caucasian, grew up in Los Angeles. I was in foster care since I was 9 years old. Currently lives in Charleston, South Carolina Some topics discussed: Paedophilia in the church and how it push him away from Catholicism Growing up in a foster family The son-ship of Jesus The feeling of betraying Jesus when he started thinking about Islam Suspension of disbelief as apposed to critical thinking and making mental decisions and being open to all faiths The feeling of having a 'returning of faith' after leaving the church Researching about Islam and 'Jesus in Islam' The pamphlet he read, "My Great Love of Jesus Led Me to Islam" How his wife accepted his looking into Islam The day of conversion Grant states: My journey to the faith started in London. It was a Friday evening sometime in March, 2019, and I was returning to my hotel from work, it was around 8pm, and I passed by a table somewhere near Piccadilly Circus, where there were a few brothers and sisters with Qurans and other materials. At that time I was experiencing a crises in faith. Having been a lifelong Catholic, I was shaken to the core by the priest scandals and to be honest I was ready to just give up on religion. My depression led me to drink heavily, give up on God and religion, and do things that are considered immoral. I stopped by the table because I had always been curious about Islam and wanted to pick up some materials. A brother started talking to me. He asked if I was a Christian and I said yes, but at the moment not practicing. Then he asked if I believed in God, and I said yes. Then he asked if I believed in the Trinity, and I believe my answer surprised him, because I said 'No'; Honestly, he was a stranger, it was how I felt, and I just replied plainly. He then asked if I believe that Jesus was God, and I replied no again. I felt strange about this, being a Catholic they believe in the Trinity and Jesus being part of it. However, I always felt that Jesus was 'infused' with God, that He worked through Jesus. But with the crises I was going through, and the priests doing what they did, and they were supposedly devoted to the church and Jesus and look what happened. So in my heart I just could no longer accept any of it. The brother gave me a Quran, a booklet "My Great Love of Jesus Led Me to Islam", and other materials (which I still have to this day!), pointed out that I should start at Fatihah and then said something to me which sticks to me: "Promise me that when you get back to the hotel that you will pray openly and sincerely to God" He did not know what I was going through, nor did we even talk about anything personal. So he was not aware of my depression or anything. I was quite taken aback. I followed his advice. And when I got back and started praying, I literally began to sob and cry and poured out my whole heart, and asked God to help me, that I was so lost.I guess I can fill you in on the rest during our talk. More about Grant: Job/Expertise: I am consultant with the Oracle NetSuite Financial platform/ERP specialising in administration and programming. I have been in information technology all my working life, starting with the old IBM AS400 systems. I was an adjunct professor for MIS at Penn State University for a number of years, and have been a contributing author (Sybex, Coriolis publishers) and technical editor on a number of books dealing with Windows Server technology. Hobbies/Interests: I have written a number of books on martial arts history that can be found on Amazon, both published and also self-published (search for author Grant A. Miller). I play a number of instruments and was in the 'pit' for musicals (high school musicals). Passionate about: I do charity work for helping the poor (housing, education). I was formerly in the K of C that sponsored a number of projects. Work directly related to Islam/Muslims: I support my local mosque and Imam with communications/supplies for brothers that are incarcerated. I am also in charge of our "library". Personally I am finding that I may also dive into developing a support network for new Muslims coming from a Christian background with questions that revolve around this area. I find that having spent a lifetime in a particular Christian theology and then having the cart completely flipped over is not only a challenge but also untangling all the indoctrination and lingering feelings is something that is best tackled as a group. Sr Gemma and Fr Luke Goymour: My wife is a Christian and loves to point out that Jesus says, ‘The greatest commandment is Love' – i.e. if she takes this as her guideline but doesn't pay too much attention to observing the traditions of the Church and receiving the sacraments, she will still be fine. Whilst teaching our children, I find it hard to instil in them the need to follow Church traditions. I want my children to respect their mother, but I want them to observe all the teachings that we have in the Church. How can I find a compromise?; Does it matter what we wear to Church? Last Sunday I attended a different Parish as I was away for the weekend, and the lay Eucharistic minister who was helping the parish priest distribute communion was dressed very casually (tracksuit/t-shirt style) which I found rather off-putting. Surely as a priest has to be robed in a certain was to celebrate Mass, at least a Eucharistic Minister should be given some guidelines as they have an important role – after all, those serving at Mass usually have to wear a cassock too?; Do you think God has the solutions to climate change ‘up his sleeve' – if only a large enough number of people would turn/return to Him, be converted in their everyday lives, and seek His help on this issue?; I'm a single father and my daughter is a smart teenager very interested in social justice. She continually complains to me that the Church is disconnected with women today and doesn't allow them to have a leadership role. Any advice on how I can respond and how I can encourage her to have a good relationship with the Church?; My husband enjoys the extraordinary form of the Mass in Latin, but I feel very disconnected as my mind drifts off and I don't know what is happening. How I can feel more connected or should I go to a different Mass?

Margaret Mary O'Connor has made it her mission to reveal the truth of Your Catholic Church. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University At Buffalo (NY), and a Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry from Christ the King Seminary in East Aurora, NY. She is a former Chaplain and is currently a Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady of Charity Parish where, ironically, the Church windows depict the Vatican II Council. One window represents the “Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World,” which includes an article that speaks directly to ending sexual discrimination of all kinds in our Church. In this time of Church upheaval, O'Connor, as author of Scandal in the Shadows, has uncovered secrets which were conveniently buried away in hopes they would never see the light of day. Enter Margaret Mary O'Connor. O'Connor literally “walks the walk” on picket lines to help keep this issue of Women's Ordination in the forefront of Catholics' minds. She also pickets for Church accountability on the priest sexual-abuse issue. As a fellow member of the Laity, herself, she believes any Catholic, deserves at minimal at least the truth from Rome, as opposed to the continual outright deception they are receiving. She also is a member of Call to Action, Future Church, Roman Catholic Women Priests, the Women's Ordination Conference, the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests (SNAP), Preservation Buffalo Niagara and Western New York Land Conservancy and Buffalo Central Terminal. Margaret truly encountered a life-altering experience she will never forget. Living twenty years with an undiagnosed autoimmune disease, her life was literally hell. Beyond the daily physical symptoms to deal with, were the emotional ones as well. She was told by two doctors that basically her physical symptoms of vomiting, great loss of weight, anemia, and diarrhea (to name a few) were all in her head. The doctor she really needed to see, they told her, was a Psychiatrist. It's truly a miracle she is alive today, thanks to finally finding a doctor who actually ordered tests to find the reason for her illness – which turned out to be celiac disease. She will never forget when her doctor told her she would have been “six feet under” within six months. Her twin-sister Pat, had brain cancer, and never got to have that second chance at life. But Margaret feels incredibly fortunate to have her life back again. It's like she is seeing life from a new and different perspective, and every moment has become wonderfully precious. All she knew was that after losing twenty years of her life to sickness, to now being free to begin again was incredible. Today she lives life to the fullest and her latest adventure is writing, something she had never done before. She knows from experience that having her own story ignored is the reason she brings a visceral passion to her writing. If one side of a story is ignored, you will miss its reality and truth. Her book “Scandal in the Shadows,” brings forth the very truth of a Church issue which indeed will impact on your own future faith life. When not writing, speaking or being interviewed by the media, O'Connor enjoys gardening, and reading mystery books, along with volunteering for Pete's Pillows and Alzheimer's events. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wvuncommonplace/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wvuncommonplace/support

Margaret offers Chapter Four of her book, free to read to members of our audience. There is also a petition regarding the issue of bringing Mary Priests title back into the Church, and for the hierarchy to finally address the issue of women's inequality in the Catholic Church today.About the Book To some, Church history might sound dry or even boring. With her book "Scandal in the Shadows" you will never view Church history as boring… ever again. Most people have preconceived thoughts of women becoming priests. Whatever beliefs you may have, you will soon realize things are not at all as they appear. The very shadow of women priest's actual history is truly like a phantom from the shadows, residing within the graveyard of Papal records. Its' very voice having been lost for centuries, is now but a whisper wanting to be heard for today's Catholics. Readers will discover skeletons in the closets of our Church's past history. They will also uncover threads of early Church History, which very well might hold the answer to helping begin to solve our current priest shortage in the Catholic Church today. Most Catholics have never heard of Mary Mother of God and the Priesthood. Scandal in the Shadows not only reveals this deeply hidden secret, but for the reader's, they will also learn about Mary attired in a chasuble and stole. With each answer comes another question. Questions like, “What exactly precipitated not only this abrupt centuries old turnaround regarding the actual history of Mary Mother of God as Mary Priest, but this very move as so very disrespectful indeed, to one of the most credible woman priest of all time?” The hierarchy certainly does not see any women's equality in our Church as even an issue today. What would restoring this previously lost heritage of women priests mean to your faith life today? Millions of Catholics are unaware of the past presence of Women Bishops, Women Deacons and Women Priests in their Church's history. How could you know, when your own Church never disclosed the actual truth of this matter to you? Scandal in the Shadows explores why it is acceptable for Rome to betray the laity about the real past Church history.

Hard to Believe

Hard to Believe

Have women always been forbidden from serving as priests? Or is the Church's current ruling on the issue little more than a cover-up? These questions finally came into focus for Margaret Mary O'Connor when, well into her adult life, she John Wijngaards' 2001 book The Ordination of Women in the Catholic Church. O'Connor is a life-long, devout Catholic, who always questioned the muted role women were allowed to play in her Church. She always suspected there might be more (or less) to the arguments the Church made about the ordination of wome, and Wjingaard's book sent her down a research rabbit hole which ultimately led to her publishing her own conclusions in her book Scandal in the Shadows: The Original Priest - Mother Mary. O'Connor has since dedicated her time to vocally, openly championing the ordination of Catholic women, and to exposing the sexual abuse scandal that continues to cast a shadow over the institution she loves. She holds a Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry, from Christ the King Seminary in East Aurora, New York and is a a Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady of Charity Parish in Buffalo, New York. Learn more about Margaret and her work at her website. Special thanks to Bry from Pontifacts for recording our introduction this week.

Who is Margaret Mary O’Connor? Margaret Mary O’Connor has made it her mission to reveal the truth of Your Catholic Church. In this time of Church upheaval, O’Connor, as author of Scandal in the Shadows, has uncovered secrets which were conveniently buried away in hopes they would never see the light of day. Enter Margaret Mary O’Connor. O’Connor literally “walks the walk” on picket lines to help keep this issue of Women’s Ordination in the forefront of Catholics’ minds. She also pickets for Church accountability on the priest sexual-abuse issue. As a fellow member of the Laity, herself, she believes any Catholic, deserves at minimal at least the truth from Rome, as opposed to the continual outright deception they are receiving. She also is a member of Call to Action, Future Church, Roman Catholic Women Priests, the Women’s Ordination Conference, the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests (SNAP), Preservation Buffalo Niagara and Western New York Land Conservancy and Buffalo Central Terminal. It’s truly a miracle she is alive today, thanks to finally finding a doctor who actually ordered tests to find the reason for her illness – which turned out to be celiac disease. She will never forget when her doctor told her she would have been “six feet under” within six months. Her twin-sister Pat, had brain cancer, and never got to have that second chance at life. But Margaret feels incredibly fortunate to have her life back again. It’s like she is seeing life from a new and different perspective, and every moment has become wonderfully precious. When not writing, speaking or being interviewed by the media, O’Connor enjoys gardening, and reading mystery books, along with volunteering for Pete’s Pillows and Alzheimer’s events. What if in the beginning of the Christ Movement there were women apostles, priests, deacons, and bishops? Well hold onto your hats as we blow your beliefs that only men were spiritual leaders during the early church. On this episode of Belief Busters, Margaret Mary O'Connor and I discuss the reality that women of power have been erased from church history by patriarchal Roman politics. But you can do something about this fallacy, awaken to newly unearthed truths that women spiritual leaders existed and sign the petition to have the Catholic Church change their dogma to allow women to reclaim their power within the Church. Margaret Mary O'Connor has a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Buffalo, and a Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry, from Christ The King Seminary in East Aurora, NY. She is a former Chaplain and currently is a Eucharistic Minister. She literally walks the walk, on picket lines to help keep the issues of Women's Ordination and Church Accountability on the Priest Sexual Abuse Issue, at the forefront of any Catholic's attention. She believes any Catholic deserves at minimal at least the truth from Rome, as opposed to the continual out right deception they are receiving. She also is a member of Call To Action, Future Church, Roman Catholic Women Priests, Women's Ordination Conference and SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests). Margaret's goal is to initiate a World-Wide Conversation about the Factual Truth of Mary Mother Of God, being a Woman Priest, in the Catholic Church's Early History. The team, a member of the New England Collegiate Baseball League, plays its home games at Old Mountain Field in South Kingstown. Now, for our feature story: The Rhode Island Office of Healthy Aging has awarded a total of $200,000 in grants to 10 organizations to help connect the state's older residents with their families through modern technology. The funded agencies will equip residents living in areas hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic with smart devices, internet services and related training to help them better access online resources, work and study remotely, and virtually connect with family and friends. According to the Pew Research Center, an estimated 41% of Rhode Islanders age 65 and older are not broadband users, and more than 25% of older adults in the state are not online. Director Rosamaria Amoros Jones said in a statement: “The internet is a basic necessity today.” “So much of how we manage our lives and connect with one another and to services is driven by technology now; yet inequities persist, with many older adults and families in lower-income neighborhoods lacking access to, or fluency in, digital tools." Margaret Mary O'Connor, as a member of the Catholic Laity, thought she knew everything about the Catholic Church, at least until she came upon a centuries-old Scandal of lies and cover up by the Hierarchy of that Church. Fed up with being lied to by her own Church about its past Church's history on Women priests, she knew she had found her calling. With this realization, she committed her life to revealing a truth most Catholics know nothing about. Follow Margaret, as she travels down the Highway of Radical Truth, where lies and outright cover-up will be disclosed. Millions of Catholics are unaware of that past presence of Women Bishop's Women Deacons as well as Women Priests all there hiding in plain sight, in early Church History. As the complicity of this centuries-old Scandal continues, Margaret wants her fellow Catholics to learn the actual truth of this matter for themselves. She strongly believes at minimum, any Catholic deserves the actual truth of this matter. To say that change is needed is hardly an understatement. She doesn't let the Church's betrayal stop her from uncovering some very fascinating Church Skeletons. One's which very well might help solve our current priest shortage issue today. To some, Church history might sound dry or even boring. One would guess that it depends on what skeletons are discovered in the closets of our Church's past history. Scandal in the Shadows goes deep into the deceit of the church in a way no other book, or author, dares. Author, Margaret Mary O'Connor, uncovers threads of early Church History, which very well might hold the answer to helping begin to solve our current priest shortage in the Catholic Church. Millions of Catholics are unaware of the past presence of Women Bishops, Women Deacons and Women Priests in their Church's history. How could you know, when your own Church never disclosed the actual truth of this matter to you?Scandal in the Shadows focuses in on something unbelievably incredible which took place in the early history of the Catholic Church, the existence of Mary Priest, otherwise known as Mary Mother of God. Welcome to episode 87, in this episode I have the honor of interviewing seminarian Laura Hayes Marsh. Laura Hayes Marsh is currently a Seminarian with Ascension Alliance at Ascension Theological College.  She has worn many hats in life such as mother, divorcée, and widow.  Her previous educational pursuits include an associate degree in Chemistry and a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a minor in Psychology.  She’s a Sagittarius who likes to sing and bake.  She currently works as a paraprofessional in a self-contained elementary classroom for students with Autism (ABLE) and works on weekends and holidays as a Pharmacy Technician.  In the past, her occupations have included classroom teacher, state environmental investigator, and owner of a home bakery called, “Going Bananas.”  Her spiritual formation began in the United Methodist Church; however, the Episcopal Church offered a part-time job in the late 1990s, after which the liturgy spoke to Laura’s soul, and she became a member of an Episcopal parish.  After Confirmation, God nudged her to do more than just singing in the Chancel Choir, and in 2015, she served as a Lector, a Eucharistic Minister, and as a Lay Eucharistic Visitor in the Episcopal Church.  Serving in various church ministries led her to community service as an on-call Justice Court Chaplain and participation in the Behavioral Health and Suicide Prevention Taskforce. In 2017, a pilgrimage to the Holy Land opened her heart and mind, and she acknowledged a call to the Priesthood.  She began discerning a vocation in the Episcopal church and working with a Spiritual Director.  During the process of discernment, an unfulfilled need was discovered. Finding a Spiritual Director who was a better fit led her to pursue a Master of Divinity with Ascension Alliance.  Her ministry goal is in Healthcare Chaplaincy. There were two policemen who were on either side of my shoulders.  corner of my eye there was two policemen that were on either side of my shoulders. Scandal in the Shadows is geared specifically for the Laity of the Catholic Church. It asks the questions that our Church hierarchy's selective memory, will not answer for you. Their memory issue indeed, leaves all of us with more unanswered questions to deal with. What do we really know? And what has our Church conveniently not been telling us? Where can we find the truth today? Why exactly is it, that our hierarchy will not even acknowledge their own Church's past history? If ever there was a time, where Catholics needed Jesus' honesty, and transparency, now is that time. Why have the Church Fathers not been open and transparent with the Laity of their Church for centuries? So where is the truth to be found? She spent 30 years of her career working for the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier, before co-founding Appalachian Outreach, Inc. in 2002. She now serves as the Executive Director of AOI. In 2012, Rose also completed her certification in Nonprofit Management through WVU.          In addition to her work with Appalachian Outreach, Inc., Rose is an active member in her local community and church. She's currently involved with the local Long Term Recovery Committee, Local Emergency Planning Committee and WV VOAD (West Virginia Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster). She's also a member of St. Jude Parish in Glen Dale WV, where she is the RCIA director, Eucharistic Minister, and Lector, and she is a member of God’s Children of Love prayer group in Moundsville, WV. She completed the Diaconate / Pastoral Ministry program of the Diocese of Wheeling – Charleston in 1987 with a certificate in adult formation. Nonprofit Spotlight: Appalachian Outreach, Inc.       Guided by the Gospel of Jesus Christ and inspired by the Holy Spirit, the mission of Appalachian Outreach is to help relieve the burden of poverty and the loss of dignity suffered by the people of Appalachia who, through no fault of their own, struggle to meet the basic needs of daily life.       They continually look for contacts in counties where accessibility and opportunity are limited and other charitable agencies are lacking or struggle to meet local need. They also look for contacts locally that will support the mission of Appalachian Outreach, therefore building a network where the dignity of all is respected and the love of God is proclaimed through prayer, word, and deed. Lessons Learned: In our conversation, Rose shares her experience of leading Appalachian Outreach, Inc. and how it originally got started. Some of the key lessons she has learned through this work are outlined below:  When getting started: Realized applying for permits would be time and resource intensive. Instead, asked the mayors of each surrounding county if they could solicit their residents. Led to not only a "yes" in response to that question, but also some really positive public relations opportunities for the mayors and for leadership boards within the community. "We're too successful to stop now." Need to build relationships with local contacts. Created an advisory board of someone who knows each area well. In order to build trust, you have to go where people are. "Sit on the porches and listen." Partner with existing organizations! Funding from/through the Government NIPS - Neighborhood Investment Program Allows for donations to be made as a tax credit to the donor. Rose and her co-founder approached small county commissioners and talked to them about the good they were providing for the county. In return, the commissioners provided some compensation for transportation of the goods. Income generating opporunities: Run a store house where they sell building materials at a discounted rate and they only had to pay for transportation. Today's host(s): Scot Landry Today's guest(s): Recipients of the 2011 Cheverus Awards Joan Fawls, St Mary of the Hills, Milton Frances X. Hogan, Massachusetts Catholic Conference Frank McCarthy, St Rita, Lowell Chester & Patricia Morrill, St Richard, Danvers Benoit Thibault, St Augustine, Andover Brother Daniel Walters, OSB, Glastonbury Abbey Ann Casey, St Marguerite d'Youville, Dracut Linda Newell, Our Lady, Star of the Sea, Marblehead Mary Therese Ferraris, St Jude, Norfolk Deacon Michael J. Markham, Our Lady of Grace, Pepperell, along with Fr. Paul Ring Eileen Simmons, Our Lady of Grace, Pepperell Deacon A.J. Constantino, Sacred Heart, East Boston Thomas Maloney, St. Ann, West Bridgewater Today's topics: 2011 Cheverus Awards Summary of today's show: The Good Catholic Life was live at Holy Cross Cathedral on Sunday to bring you 13 stories of some of the 97 unsung heroes of the parishes of the Archdiocese who received the Cheverus Award from Cardinal Seán. What's remarkable about them is how unremarkable the stories are in one way: These humble people acknowledged that there are many more just like them in their parishes, doing the same work of living out the Gospel in the world. They are the Body of Christ in the world and on this Solemnity of Christ the King, they emerged from the shadows for a brief moment of recognition on behalf of all those they represent. 1st segment: Scot said yesterday at Holy Cross Cathedral was a special ceremony in which Cardinal Seán awarded 96 Cheverus Medals to recipients who were recognized for their service to the Catholic community. Established in 2008, in conjunction with the archdiocese's bicentennial celebration, the Cheverus Award is named after the first Bishop of Boston, Jean-Louis Lefebvre de Cheverus. Bishop Cheverus led the diocese from 1808 until his return to his native France in 1824. The award is given to lay people, deacons and religious in parishes and other archdiocesan ministries for their service to the Church and the people of God. Recipients are nominated by pastors, regional bishops and the central ministries of the archdiocese. Cardinal O'Malley also chooses some of the recipients personally. Scot and Rick interviewed 13 of the recipients at the end the ceremony and those recordings will be played.. Scot welcomes Joan Fawls of St. Mary of the Hills, Milton. Her children all attended the parish school and she become involved through the PTO. She's also involved in a food program that brings desserts to residents of a homeless shelter. She's been running it for about 7 years. She was humbled to be selected from among so many who work so hard. She said it's an easy program to run, she has the gift of organization. She loves running it. This was Joan's first time to the cathedral and she said it was very lovely. Scot welcomes Fran Hogan, a Boston attorney and volunteer who has served the pro-life committee of the Mass. Catholic Conference. She said she was shocked to be given the award. She chairs the pro-life and family life subcommittee and she's dealing with many issues in the public arena, including assisted suicide. She said there are many euphemisms in use. For example, the Hemlock Society has changed its name to Compassion in Choice. Massachusetts is seen as a testbed because of its large medical community. She is a member of Immaculate Conception Parish in Everett. In her day job, she is a real estate attorney. Scot said the Cheverus Awards work by having each diocese nominating one person every three years. Scot said St. Rita's in Lowell nominated Frank McCarthy. Frank has been a member his entire life, being baptized there and getting married there. His main involvement is in religious education and RCIA. The ministry has helped his own faith. He said he learns more by preparing to teach it. He said he couldn't understand why he was chosen for the award because so many are deserving of it. Scot asked why St. Rita's is a shrine. The church was originally St. Columba, but because of a number of miracles attributed to St. Rita's the name was changed in 1924. He's experienced healing through the intercession of St. Rita. In 1987, he was sick and his wife attended a healing service where she prayed for him and at the same moment he was healed. Scot said of the 97 recipients were two couples, including Chester and Patricia Morrell of St. Richard, Danvers. Patricia said it's wonderful to win with her husband. Patricia said her husband was on active duty for 30 years, but together they were lectors, eucharistic ministers, they cleaned the church, took kids on retreats for many years. Someone needed to do it, so they just did it. The moved to Danvers from Lynn in 1973. They are celebrating 61 years married this year. Patricia said she missed the original announcement of their award an only found out they were getting it two weeks ago. Scot and Rick talked about the importance of unsung heroes in the parish like Chester and Patricia. Rick said it's nice that yesterday was a day to thank the people who don't often get thanked. Scot welcomed Benoit Thibault from St. Augustine, Andover. He's been a member of the parish for 21 years. He's originally from Montreal. He's involved with Franciscan brothers, Lazarus House, Cor Unum, Pregnancy Care, men's ministry, and religious education. He's retired and so he has time to do these things. Scot said the Gospel readings were about the corporal works of mercy and that is a list that matches those works of mercy. Every Tuesday, he goes to Cor Unum to feed the homeless. There are many more from the parish who are involved in the ministries of the parish. Scot said pastors tell him how difficult it is to select one person to nominate. Scot said he met Benoit in Legatus, a society for Catholic businessmen. Benoit worked his whole career in the lumber business. Scot said most of the awards were given to lay men and women, but each of the five auxiliary bishops were able to nominate a religious brother or sister and a deacon. Scot now interviews Br. Daniel Walters from Glastonbury Abbey. He's been there since 1973. The abbey is a Benedictine monastery. They first came to Hingham in 1954 from Wisconsin. There is a retreat house, conference center, and bookstore. They also do some outreach in the community, including local parishes and soup kitchens. There are only nine monks now so there are a lot of laypeople involved. He's from Quincy and after reading Thomas Merton, he became interested in the monastic life. Scot said Benedictines are known for liturgy and this is a big week in the liturgy with the change in the missal. They've been helping people prepare for the changes. The abbey offers retreats for individuals or groups, for many different themes and other faith traditions. Rick said the theme we see in the interviews is that these people at the cathedral are taking to heart the words of this past Sunday's Gospel, the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. They are out there literally feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting the imprisoned and more. Two of the 13 interviewees told Scot they know his mom, including Ann Casey of St Marguerite d'Youville, Dracut. Ann said she works one day a week in the parish office recording sacraments. She's also in charge of bereavement luncheons, CORI checks, bulletin inserts, and other administrative work. She's been a part of the parish since about 1974. Scot said when he was young it was called St. Theresa's church. Scot said it was originally combined with St. Francis in Dracut and now shares a pastor with St. Rita in Lowell. Scot has many positive memories of the parish from growing up. Scot is joined by Linda Newell, Our Lady, Star of the Sea in Marblehead. She's been a parishioner there for about 32 years. She coordinates the Christian service programs, both outreach and within the parish. She also helps with communion ministry and she's a lector. They are currently doing a giving tree which provides Christmas gifts for those who would not otherwise have them. They will gather about 1,000 gifts. She found out she was getting the ward from Fr. Steele. She was surprised and humbled and the award made her think of all the wonderful people of the parish who do so much. Scot said that is a common reaction among recipients because they recognize how many are involved in building up the parishes. Scot said this was the first-time they had used the new mobile studio for remote recording and he was worried that the choir practicing before the ceremony would drown out the interviews, but it turned out to be a nice backdrop for them. Scot welcomed Mary Therese Ferraris, St Jude, Norfolk, immediately after the ceremony. She was surprised to be notified she was getting the award. She's receiving it on behalf of a lot of people. She was director of religious education for 26 years in that parish. She's now educating the children of some of her first students. She said it's wonderful to be recognized by Cardinal Seán for helping to build up the Church. Scot said many recipients are involved in religious education for young people. She said she does it for the children. Seeing those happy faces each year makes it worth it. Scot welcomed Deacon Michael J. Markham, Our Lady of Grace, Pepperell, along with Fr. Paul Ring. Michael said it's an opportunity to remember all the people who have influenced his faith over the years, from his first religious education teacher to his family to his pastors and to his wife. Scot said to Fr. Ring that it must be agonizing to be able to send in one or two names to be recognized. Fr. Ring said Fr. Arthur Coyle submitted Deacon Mike's name, but for the lay leadership of the parish it took a lot of time to finally settle on Eileen Simmons. Scot welcomed Eileen Simmons. She taught second grade CCD for many years, preparing them for First Communion. She also worked in Legion of Mary and was a Eucharistic Minister for 25 years. In the Legion, they would go out to visit people's homes and pray the rosary with them. She said she knew Scot's mom very well. She said it's nice to run into children of the people she taught when they were in second grade. She said she was very nervous to receive the honor from Cardinal Seán. She said said the whole parish is so supportive and she's received many congratulations from parishioners. Many of her friends and family members were present. She has 7 daughters, 19 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. In the studio, Scot said it was very moving to be in the presence of a woman who has done so much for the Church over decades. Scot welcomed Deacon A.J. Constantino from Sacred Heart Parish, East Boston. Scot said it's a very diverse parish. They celebrate Mass in English, Italian, and Vietnamese. Each community is actually growing. It's a very active parish school family. The Vietnamese youth are thriving. They merged with Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in East Boston and the Italian community has become a vibrant part of the parish. His wife, Betty, also a recipient of the Cheverus Award. He said part of the diaconate is that it's a husband and wife ministry. His wife and daughter are as active in the parish as he is. Betty is the parish youth minister and is involved in the daily activities of the parish. He grew up in a family where the family life centered around the parish life and when he dated, he looked for someone who's family life was like his, so it's natural to be part of a parish community. The deacons are selected by the regional bishops and he was selected by Bishop Hennessey. Deacon Constantino said he loves being a deacon. Scot welcomed Thomas Maloney of St. Ann, West Bridgewater. Thomas has been a parishioner for 16 years. He's on the finance council, is a eucharistic minister, and helps with eucharistic adoration. He often goes to the Pastoral Center for noon Mass on his vacations. He was honored to receive the letter from the Cardinal's office and he was caught off-guard by it. He never expected it. He was awed by being in the cathedral and then walking up to receive the award from the cardinal was amazing. Thomas said we need to give back to the church what God has given to us. Pastors are often alone and need the help of many to help the parish thrive. He said the CCD program offer the biggest bang for the buck, the highest return on the investment. For those who don't think they know enough about their faith to teach, they can start by being a teacher's aide, get some training and eventually end up teaching. Scot said it's a wonderful way to learn the faith. Scot read the complete of those who received the award, available at the . Scot said it was wonderful to see all the priests who were also there, overjoyed to celebrate the hard work of their parishioners.

Author and Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady of Charity Parish, Margaret Mary O'Connor, nods in agreement when podcast hosts ask her if she is the “modern day David ready to slay Goliath,” with her newly released book, Scandal in the Shadows, The Original Priest, Mother Mary Quiet and humble by nature, the author has made it her mission to reveal the truth of Your Catholic Church. After years of research, Ms. O'Connor has painstakingly chronicled the oppression of women priests, dating back centuries. “Do you consider yourself to be the modern day David?” asks hosts near and far. With no hesitation, in a tone that would be approved in any church setting, she smiles and says, “Absolutely!” Margaret Mary O'Connor holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University At Buffalo (NY), and a Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry from Christ the King Seminary in East Aurora, NY.
