George Lowther was a mutineer and a pirate, one of the most prolific during the golden age of piracy. His first mate, Edward "Ned" Low, went on to establish himself as perhaps the most sadistic and depraved of all pirate captains. Virtually all popular sources specify Lowther's death being by suicide in 1723, while marooned on the small island of Blanquilla, off the coast of Venezuela. While researching the War of Jenkins' Ear, historian Craig Chapman found repeated references to "Lowther the Pirate" in primary source material. This Lowther was pardoned and commissioned as a Royal Navy lieutenant in 1741. Further research revealed that this was indeed George Lowther, and therefore, that the date and place of his death had been reported erroneously. Military historian and author Craig Chapman shares the story of how Lowther became a pirate, some of his most notable and notorious actions, and his astonishing resurfacing years after his purported death. His book is called "The Resurrected Pirate: The Life, Death, and Subsequent Career of the Notorious George Lowther". Today's poem is one of the few enduring works of a poet and playwright who burned brightly during his heyday and then blinked out almost entirely. Happy reading.Leigh, son of James Mathews Leigh, was born in London on 29 March 1837. At an early age he engaged in literary pursuits. From time to time appeared collections of his lyrics, under the titles of Carols of Cockayne, 1869 (several editions); Gillott and Goosequill, 1871; A Town Garland: a Collection of Lyrics, 1878; and Strains from the Strand: Trifles in Verse, 1882. His verse was always fluent, but otherwise of very slender merit. For the stage he translated many French comic operas. His first theatrical essay was in collaboration with Charles Millward in a musical spectacle for the Theatre Royal in Birmingham. His ‘Falsacappa,' music by Offenbach, was produced at the Globe Theatre on 22 April 1871; ‘Le Roi Carotte' at the Alhambra on 3 June 1872; ‘Bridge of Sighs,' opera-bouffe, at the St. James's, 18 Nov. 1872; ‘White Cat,' a fairy spectacle, at the Queen's, Long Acre, on 2 Dec. 1875; ‘Voyage dans la Lune,' opera-bouffe, at the Alhambra, on 15 April 1876; ‘Fatinitza,' opera-bouffe (the words were printed), adapted from the German, at the Alhambra on 20 June 1878; ‘The Great Casimir,' a vaudeville, at the Gaiety, on 27 Sept. 1879; ‘Cinderella,' an opera, with music by J. Farmer, at St. James's Hall, on 2 May 1884 (the words were published in 1882); ‘The Brigands,' by H. Meilhac and L. Halévy, adapted to English words by Leigh, was printed in 1884. For ‘Lurette,' a comic opera, Avenue, 24 March 1883, he wrote the lyrics; and with Robert Reece he produced ‘La Petite Mademoiselle,' comic opera, Alhambra, on 6 October 1879. He edited ‘Jeux d'Esprit written and spoken by French and English Wits and Humorists,' in 1877, and wrote Mark Twain's ‘Nightmares' in 1878.His last theatrical venture—a complete failure—was ‘The Prince Methusalem,' a comic opera, brought out at the Folies Dramatiques (now the Kingsway), Great Queen Street, London, on 19 May 1883. He was a Spanish, Portuguese, and French scholar, a brilliant and witty conversationalist, and a humorous singer. He died in his rooms in Lowther's private hotel, 35 Strand, London, on 16 June 1883, and was buried in Brompton cemetery on 22 June.-bio via Wikipedia This is a public episode. Send us a textIn this enlightening conversation with ultrarunner Jazmine Lowther, we explore the dynamic intersection of elite performance, career transitions, and authentic living in the mountain sports world. Jazmine takes us inside her recent move from The North Face to Arc'teryx, revealing the emotional complexity of brand identity for professional athletes and the forward-thinking athlete support systems being developed in the industry.Training in Squamish British Columbia brings unique challenges—freezing rain, challenging terrain, and a community where extraordinary multisport days are the norm. Jazmine shares how this environment shapes her approach to training while preparing for races like Canyons 100K, where she'll return as a former champion. The candid discussion about mental fortitude required for Pacific Northwest winters offers valuable perspective for anyone training through challenging conditions. The conversation takes fascinating turns through coaching philosophy, where Jazmine emphasizes human connection over training metrics. "Communication is the foundation for the coach-athlete relationship," she explains, detailing how understanding an athlete's life stressors, relationship challenges, and mental health is crucial to effective coaching. Her approach to running retreats and holistic athlete development reveals a thoughtfulness that extends far beyond physical performance. We tackle complex industry questions about race consolidation, the UTMB ecosystem, and finding balance between professional opportunities and grassroots racing culture. Jazmine's balanced perspective acknowledges both the visibility major race series bring while valuing the community events that build the sport's foundation. Her personal dilemma between targeting Western States or UTMB highlights the scheduling challenges elite athletes face in today's crowded calendar.Perhaps most compelling is Jazmine's reflection on authenticity in the trail running community, where she values genuine connections over curated perfectionism. For anyone navigating the intersection of passion, profession, and purpose in outdoor sports, this conversation offers invaluable insights from someone balancing competitive excellence with genuine human connection.Follow Jazmine on IG - @jazmine_lowtherFollow James on IG - @jameslaurielloFollow The Steep Stuff on IG - @steepstuff_podThis episode is brought to you by Ultimate Direction - use code steepstuffpod for 25% of your cart at checkout

Seventeen Parcels (The Moorhouse Trilogy) by Mic Lowther"Seventeen Parcels" shares a thrilling – and unconventional – treasure hunt that will keep readers guessing with each page. In this novel, a wealthy man wills a vast fortune to his three grown children but leaves directions to it in 17 parcels hidden throughout the US. Now, the heirs must find the parcels and follow the path to their inheritance, if indeed there actually is any.Attorney for billionaire Xander Moorhouse employs a package delivery driver to hide 17 mysterious parcels each in a different US State. Driver Austin Somerfeld does so over the course of 18 months, following a strict set of rules and earning a half-million dollars for his efforts.Moorhouse dies 11 years later, but leaves behind directions with his attorney indicating that his grown children – Caroline, David, and Juliana – must find the hidden parcels and open them in numbered sequence only after all have been located. The three heirs participate reluctantly but warm to the on-going adventure. This is a captivating novel for road trip-treasure hunt readers to become involved in the drama of hiding, then finding the 17 parcels with a host of attendant obstacles and difficulties along the way. Such readers will be just as confused and puzzled as the heirs when parcels are at last opened and Xander's intentions are revealed.Mic Lowther has been a computer programmer and systems analyst for 60 years, working and living in nine different US states. Though retired (more than once), he is still self-employed and has written and published non-fiction adventure books as well as children's adventure stories."Seventeen Parcels" is Mic's first novel in 50 years of writing. It follows an idea that suddenly occurred one day and, unlike many other ideas, was still going strong after the first few chapters.https://www.amazon.com/Seventeen-Parcels-Mic-Lowther/dp/097044110X/ref=sr_1_1?crid=22UKNGRLQCZ1X&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.SfPHboIiIIJwmfP7U4KAdg.G4e-b7Jg-9j9riVIAr4Tyt3388SY_aZyUmmnhyskTzQ&dib_tag=se&keywords=seventeen+parcels+by+mic+lowther&qid=1732846962&sprefix=mic+lowther%2Caps%2C132&sr=8-1https://miclowther.com/https://olympusstoryhouse.com/http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/12524mlos.mp3  What Mom & Dad Never Told Us (The Moorhouse Trilogy Book 3)The Unlikely Redemption of the Thief Sydney Bridgewater (The Moorhouse Trilogy Book 2)https://www.amazon.com/Unlikely-Redemption-Bridgewater-Moorhouse-Trilogy-ebook/dp/B0CKRWPT5Z?ref_=ast_author_dp_rw&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.Lb8yOuprDsORmQUzff89wjEAYIIlENIXbm175xWBReCxtX6l1HDLYhA1bp8y2elpwdhuHFVgXx3L2NipPLrsE-f5DujnmeDtMmCfuXkxSf50-HPvDgygF92rrg7bLX9di0IkTMAmz1VdqsE1xbhRiA.BywH7ZFhDTFgbFpzrJ86TuXb6K3zeVicX_Ep7gNZK9Y&dib_tag=AUTHOR

...in which we tour the west coast town of Whitehaven in the company of Blue Badge guide and historic buildings expert Alexandra Fairclough. From the heart of the bustling harbour, we paint a picture of the settlement's early history – of a remote fishing village set around a tidal river – before coal transformed its fortunes forever. As the Lowther family entered the story, the town's wealth and population multiplied; coal and ship-building transforming the sheltered 'haven' into England's second largest port, trade tethered to the notorious 'Triangular Trade'. Leaving the harbour, we visit Whitehaven's informal 'old town', then proceed to the remarkable 'grid-iron' planned streets that introduced Grand Tour designs to Georgian Cumberland, and which inspired similar layouts in New York City. Admiring designed 'vistas', a bounty of listed buildings – more per quare mile than in any other UK town – and rare one-time warehouses, we discuss the end of many eras, and reflect on the 'gem' town of today. The agri-food company Moy Park, which supplies chickens throughout the UK and Europe, has breached environmental laws on more than 500 occasions without facing prosecution. A BBC Spotlight investigation into water pollution uncovered the breaches at three different sites in Northern Ireland - including Lough Neagh.Holidaymakers and walkers in Scotland are being warned not to light camp fires. Last year, a wild-fire tore through forestry at Cannich, south of Inverness. It burned for two weeks on the surface and even more damage was caused underground, as peat burnt beneath the soil. The commercial forest is now being felled, 20 years earlier than expected, and has lost 60 percent of its value. The fire also had a serious impact on the RSPB Scotland nature reserve, at Corrimony. As the election campaign continues, and politicians travel around the UK to drum up support, on Farming Today we've asked our correspondents this week to explain what the agricultural sector is looking for. Agriculture is devolved, so policies are drawn up separately in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England. Today we discuss what farmers are looking for in England. We're looking at pollinators all week: over the past ten years, honey bees have become an integral part of the way the 75,000 acre Lowther Estate in Cumbria is managed, with around 500 colonies producing between 12 and 15 tonnes of Lake District honey every year. As well as its home hives, the estate also sends out around 200 bee colonies to other local landowners, which feed from and pollinate arable crops throughout the Eden Valley. Cumbria's only producers of rapeseed oil, farmers Ben and Jannike Taylor, are accommodating some of the Lowther bees this spring.Presenter = Anna Hill Producer = Rebecca Rooney

Take the time to acknowledge the challenges and accomplishments in your life, and celebrate how far you've gotten. On this episode of Just In Stride I had a pleasant chat with Elite Ultra Trail Runner and Nutrition Coach, Jazmine Lowther. She had an active and competitive childhood but fell out of sports and into other interests that put her future in danger. Fortunately for her, she realized her own potential before it was too late.Today her focus is much different, becoming a pro ultra trail runner and going all in. Discussing her debut book, Helen speaks about food on the family farm, about memories of marmalade and about why food matters. Ivan, meanwhile, tackles a few local food queries: was ginger really a Whitehaven import?; was the Cumberland sausage introduced by German miners?; and which of Cartmel or Sharrow Bay can claim to be the true home of sticky toffee pudding? Finally, as we tuck into an early seasonal dinner, we learn about a Lowther christmas pie with ingredients that included 15 sparrows, 46 yellow hammers, 12 patridges... and a curlew. The current housing crises do more then just take the roof from over people's heads...On this episode we're diving into a very relevant documentary on many levels that is streaming for free on tvo.org and is happening in our own backyard.  It's time to enter 'Charlotte's Castle'.Charlotte's Castle is the story of a cultural hub's real estate borne crisis, told through one remarkable rental building and its remarkable inhabitants. It chronicles the battle of a quirky cast of unlikely activists who want to hang on to their rented homes against a foreign-owned developer they fear will ruin a cultural landmark, of which they consider themselves the caretakers. Spadina Gardens, the half-block mid-rise apartment at Spadina and Lowther, built in 1904, is the oldest Toronto building to maintain its original floor plans, not to mention many original details (subway tiles that pre-date the subway by half a century!). Vast, luxurious rental units have drawn an equally eclectic mix of tenants: literary, industrial, operatic, distressed gentlefolk to ascending rock stars. They embody the creative class who drew developers to Toronto in the first place, driving property values up. But now, though their plight is understandably often overshadowed by harder luck stories, even they are no longer able to afford the city which they helped to enrich.  The struggle over the preservation of Spadina Gardens is emblematic of the battle, secretly at the heart of the national current housing crisis. It's a film that's told with heart and humor as director Jamie Kastner manages to tackle a very serious subject that is happening in cities all across North America and give it some genuine panache and style.Kastner is a filmmaker whose always trying to shine a light on something relevant in our world while still maintaining a genuine sense of entertainment to anything that he puts on the screen. We had the pleasure of sitting down with Jamie to talk about the origins of the story, the realties that he discovered while making the documentary and so very much more.Charlotte's Castle is available for free on TVO.org now.

...in which we visit one of Lakeland's great historic houses, Lowther Castle, to explore the history of the 'Yellow Earl': Hugh Lowther, 5th Earl of Lonsdale, one of the most extravagant members of the English aristocracy. In the company of Charlotte Fairbairn, seanchaidh of the Lowther family, we rewind in time to the early days of the Lowther dynasty – to the growth of the Whitehaven coalfields and the tyrannies of 'Wicked Jimmy' – to set the scene for Hugh's birth. Never intended to inherit the estate – 75,000 acres and wealth beyond dreams – the young Earl embarked upon a life of opulence and hedonism, spending vast sums and pretty much squandering the family fortune. As we trace the story of a remarkable life – of the Earl's love of animals; of his extra-marital activities; of his temporary banishment to the Arctic; of his hunts with the Kaiser – we ask what kind of man he was; why his grave is so modest; and... why yellow? Finally we consider the Earl's legacy – that stretches from boxing rules to Arsenal FC's away strip and the AA's livery. The Ten Thousand Daffodils installation is running at Lowther Castle until 24 June. To visit Lowther Castle and its exhibits see lowthercastle.org You can find Charlotte at her website here.    Slam the Gavel welcomes Dr. Adam Lowther, Nuclear Weapons Expert in the military, speaks out on his CYFD case that happened in Albuquerque, New Mexico that started August 2017. Everything in life was going smoothly until an inept school teacher working at a private school, Calvary Christian Academy, with a criminal record (fraud and theft), targeted his four-year old daughter.  This teacher filed false allegations against Dr. Lowther and his son for sexual abuse.     Within 50 minutes the police were at the door removing the children from the home by an inept policeman who was just writing parking tickets last week and the next week suddenly became a Sex Crime Detective. They took the children to All Faith Receiving Home, which is an interrogation center. Late that night they denied his daughter food and water and abusively interrogated her with 220+ questions....    However, the teacher continued to make false allegations while the four year-old was still in school for the next three months.....    Dr. Lowther gave the advice as well as myself to not let CPS in and do not let the police in without a warrant. His children will forever have a deep-seated mistrust of law enforcement. More advice is given in this podcast.  The state is set up to DESTROY FAMILIES. Also, if you sue the government, you will find it is heavily rigged. Dr. Lowther found out his Federal Case was dismissed and has $800,000.00 invested in his appeal and is unlikely to win because, "you are not able to hold them accountable because of the Federal Court Judges. There is no fear of accountability."   People are calling in false allegations, thus weaponizing CYFD; but they still have to do the investigation at taxpayer's expense. 83% of child abuse allegations are FALSE. Dr. Lowther would like to see a law where it is illegal to make a false accusation. Dr. Lowther recommends that if you come in contact with CPS,  get the best lawyer to fight them and do not use a Public Defender or go Pro Se with CYFD. Dr. Lower states, "there is no justice system, it's the legal system and you need someone who knows the legal system." They will drag lawsuits out in civil cases. To Reach Dr. Adam Lowther: Google Dr. Adam LowtherSupportshow(https://www.buymeacoffee.com/maryannpetri)http://www.dismantlingfamilycourtcorruption.com/Support the showSupportshow(https://www.buymeacoffee.com/maryannpetri)http://www.dismantlingfamilycourtcorruption.com/
